Last year, John Neely created the 24-hour Shag as an
ends to a means of fulfilling a life-long dream (and
I'm not talking about putting on a 24 hour race). This
year, Dr Evil, now Daddy Evil, took the year off, but
handed the ropes off to the capable hands of Jim
Kerlin. For anyone who missed this race, let me assure
you that this was a tough and first-rate 24 hour race.
A score-O (rogaine) format, followed by a 6am mass
start team time trial back to the finish line ensured
that all teams would be racing the entire 24 hours (or
sitting in a cold, dark parking lot--which would you
rather do?). Jim put enough CPs out in Allamuchy to
keep us going an additional 24 hours if we really
wanted to, so there was little danger of clearing the
course. In fact, I don't think anyone cleared the
first foot orienteering leg as most got frustrated by
the thick pricker bushes Hugo alluded to and decided
they would rather move on to the bike leg instead.
Putting on a race of this caliber is no small feat and
could not have been done without hours and hours of
dedicated work. Thank you to Jim Kerlin and Denise
Mast, plus Sam Scaturo, Jon Neely, Brice Wilson and
all the volunteers (and everyone else who I am
forgetting!!) for bringing us such a great course. For
those of you who missed it, put this race on your
calendar for next year!!
Thanks to Chris, Bruce, and Sara of team
ARFE/SmartWool for having me along for the ride. I had
a blast!!
Grr baby, very grrr!
