Probably not going to make the meeting. Its a long drive with horses from Portland and I'm saving my gas $ for endurance & trail weekends.

Hi Karla, I would have replied on your question about show clothes but it looks like Jerri has covered the bases! Hope to see both of you at the meeting in October. Cookie----- Original Message -----From: Karla WatsonSent: Friday, September 12, 2008 9:48 PMSubject: Re: [NWPFHA] stuff for showing?

Hi Karla,I'll do my best to answer your questions. I'm pretty much a walking rulebook, so if you ever want to call me I can walk you through all the basics.First, you need to determine if you are showing Pleasure or Performance. While you can show both, the tack requirements are different. Usually at our shows people show horses in both so we can have entires, but most of the horses here are pleasure horses. There are definately some exceptions, but most of us just to it for fun.For Pleasure:You can ride with a bit or bosol only or both, but if you have both, you have to use both reins. Your saddle can be english or western, but your attire has to match. If you ride western you also have to ride one handed, so I've only seen that once or twice. You need an english type saddle, it doesn't have to be black, people use endurance style saddles, orthoflex, dressage (what we ride in) and more traditional paso saddles. Most people ride in traditional paso fino headgear and bits, but not all. You can put an english bridle (with cavesson) and ALMOST any type of bit you want, shank length of the bit is limited. I don't think I've ever seen anyone with this long of a shanked bit to exceed this regulation. For clothing you can do like many of us have done and find stuff at second hand stores. Required paso fino speciality clothing is NOT required (although beautiful). For pleasure you can wear a lighter colored bolero style jacket or long sleeved shirt with vest. Generally dark (or black) pants, NO JEANS. Pleasure is a straw flat brimmed spanish style hat. I always wear a helmet, you can do that too, it is encouraged in the rule book.Call of the class (the gaits you will perform) is enter at paso corto, largo, walk, reverse, corto, largo. The judge can ask for additional manuevers and possibility of the sounding board. The board is only at the state fair and it is always set up ahead of time for practice. You will have to back in the line-up.For Performance:You must ride with a bit. Saddle and tack is the same as pleasure but you do not have the option to ride in Western. Most people are in a black saddle at this point, so i'll have to look at my rule book for the brown saddle. For clothing it is the 'Classic paso fino costume' which is the same for Classic Fino and Bella Forma (halter). "Conservative in Color" bolero style jacket, tie, cumberbund is optional (but I recommend it for those silly short jackets) black pants, boots. Felt or leather flat brimmed spanish style hat (no straw), or helmet.Call of the class (the gaits you will perform) is enter at paso corto, largo, walk, reverse, corto, largo. The judge can ask for additional manuevers and will ask for tthe sounding board. You will NOT have to back in the line-up.The hats are the hardest to find. I have found everything else at the goodwill or second hand stores.Country Pleasure:Same as pleasure, usually people always wear vests, it is the most relaxed of the classes, manners are paramount.Call of the class (the gaits you will perform) is enter at paso corto, largo, walk, reverse, corto, largo. The judge can ask for additional manuevers and possibility of the sounding board. You will be asked to dismount and remount on the opposite side. You may ask for a mounting block. Proper form is to dismount, check your cinch, check your curb chain, then remount. I highly suggest practicing, usually the horses are MUCH better than the people. :)Keep the questions coming. Feel free to call me 541-654-3487, I have about 15 shows under my belt. I don't show anymore, but I still help.http://www.learninghorses.com

Subject: [NWPFHA] stuff for showing?
Speaking of showing our Pasos....what type of saddle can you use in Paso shows? I have an endurance saddle that is very english looking but medium reddish/brown in color. Can I use that or do I need an english or dressage saddle?I see the outfits are basically pants, flat brimmed hats, shirts with bows and a vest. Do you buy from a paso show clothing store or can you put it together using regular clothes that look like these? Also do you have to use a certain type of bit? Or can you use any bit? Can you use bit & jacima with 2 reins combo? Certain bridle type? Does it have to be Paso bridle or any type of leather bridle?I'd like to start gearing up and using stuff before next season. I'm thinking of building a sounding board in my pasture this winter!!Thanks for your help since I'm clueless on this Paso show stuff. :-)------Karla
