New country to explore.
This year we have tried out two new places that we enjoyed. First was Sam Brown Horse camp near Grants Pass. The camp itself does need some repair work on the corrals but we loved riding the trails in the shade and along a creek. This is old mining country and there are many that are still active. We ride our horses on the rough trails and they are packing in on foot all of their gear and even dredges. The camp has a hand pump for water, and corrals for the horses. The last 14 miles to get to the camp is a very narrow, winding, paved road. We have a one ton truck with a three horse LQ trailer and it took us 45 to 55 minutes to go that last 14 miles. It was worth it and I would love to go back again some day, riding through the beautiful Madrone groves and riding in the shade most of the day were big pluses for me.
Next we went with Margo Mittge and Linda Guadagni to Keenes Horse Camp at Mt Adams. Here the weather was much cooler. Margo found us a camp spot next to a roaring creek and across from a beautiful meadow that was full of flowers. Margo had brought a spare horse for her friend Don, and Don brought all of the firewood that we would need for the weekend. We pot lucked every night with good food and drinks, wonderful riding with beautiful views and gave the horses a pretty good workout. It was about the month of May on Mt. Adams with the flowers blooming and the snow still melting. We got to try out our new portable corral that we designed and made ourselves. It worked pretty good if I do say so.
