Subject: Ivermectin Warning
Hi Horse Friends,
I just wanted to make sure everyone knows the possible toxicity of Ivermectin wormer when injested by dogs. We wormed all 12 horses yesterday and threw the empty tubes over the fences into the snow banks and then when we were finished we collected them all and threw them away. Yesterday afternoon my daughter's family with their 2 Aussies along with my Aussie & Border Collie were out at the barn after we had wormed our horses. Apparently Misha (my daughter's 2 yr old Aussie who eats everything in sight including many inedible items) licked the apple flavored ivermectin out of the snow banks. Within a couple of hours we found her having seizures and foaming at the mouth. We rushed her to her vet in PC and he sedated her and had my son-in-law take her immediately to Cottonwood Animal Hospital where at 10pm (approx 3 hours) they finally got the seizures stopped. However she sustained too much damage and sadly died at 3:45am. The vet said she had classic poisoning symptoms so I started researching to find out what triggered the seizure at our house. I discovered that the herding breeds can have a deadly reaction to just a small amount of Ivermectin. I had NO idea that Ivermectin could be deadly.
Following is a quote from an Australian Shepherd breeder:
"A sad story about a family who rescued an aussie puppy recently. They also got a pup from me at the same time. They just emailed to say the rescue puppy licked some horse wormer (ivermectin) and went into seizures and died. Please read how dangerous ivermectin can be. Most vets do not know this. Before using ivermectin, test your aussie to see if he has MDR1. MDR1 runs in herding dogs and is very prevelent in Aussies, according to "The Aussie Times", put out by ASCA."
All 3 of the other dogs seem to be doing fine. My two have been exposed to Ivermectin for years and never had an adverse effect. But from now on I will NEVER throw another Ivermectic tube on the ground and will dispose of them promptly.
Since I had no idea that Ivermectin could be a threat to a dogs safety I figured a lot of other people wouldn't know either and I wanted to pass along this info.
