As far as I know, there is no coordination of winter league in the
north. It's not handed down from the UKUA and it's not a grand
committee or anything. Traditionaly it's been who-ever's been the most
organised and run it. It started in Leeds.
In past years it was held every year and every event in Leeds. The
year I ran it (winter 04 I think) I tried to open it up to other
venues. It didn't really work - few teams expressed interest, only
Sheffield actually got their act together and that venue wasn't great.
The year after it was taken off my hands by Jedi, I don't know exactly
how well it turned out but I think a variety of different places
hosted and there was less continuity because it wasn't in one easy to
reach place.
I'm sure if you stuck your hand up and shouted "ME, ME!" really loud
you'd get some responses from teams wanting to play. Shout loud enough
and you'll get teams turning up. You'd be competing with LUWL but I
guess a lot of teams won't be making that trek.
I know that if it doesn't happen this year I'm getting very tempted to
take the reigns again. The venue in Leeds probably won't allow it any
more but I'm going to go check out a new one this wknd to see what
facilities/costs are like & if it'd be worth using it as a tournie /
winter league / indoors venue.
Do remember that NWL isn't soley a Uni event and if you do run it you
should take into account the club teams in the region. Competition and
attendance will be better if you do. Whatever you do, don't forget the
moaning is exponentially proportional to the weather, thus NWL
attracts almost the highest level of moaning from it's entrants per
capita than most organising.
If people want one organising for them this year, say "aye" and I'll
see what I can do.
