Rick,

If you decide to head out to go to Rimrock on Saturday or Sunday be
sure to post a message. I just got back from vacation tonight and I
need to try out my new-to-me/used 9.8m sail before the first Gorge
Cup race. It looks like I missed alot of action over the last week
and a half.

I am moving to Australia for about 7 months and I want to take my
gear - two boards, two masts, two booms, and a series of sails.
Does anyone have any experience with the best way (hassle free being
the most important with cost a close second) to ship overseas?

Thanks!

hey Mike,

Could be an evening session lining up at WB tomorrow. Are you up for
it?

I can imagine the swell on Tuesday was huge up there. There were
some really impressive swells coming through at GG!

Bill,

Put that 10.5 Retro on a formula board, or Go board, or other modern wide board
with 62+ cm fin, and you've got a mean light-wind planing machine.

Where I work I can choose either Lake Washington or the Sound since my drive
after work is about the same distance to either one. I usually choose the Sound
because it almost always has more wind.

I guess it depends on what you consider "light winds" and where you choose to
sail. On these light Northerly days I sail Lake Washington because it's only
10 minutes from my house and at 170 lbs I find most times I'm wishing for a
bit more sail than my 9.3 race sail. I could go to the Sound and probably find
more wind, but the drive isn't worth the chance of a bit better sailing.

Ninty percent of the time the light wind sailing is very enjoyable and
sometimes quite lively. My next sail is going to be a 10.5 Retro.

A 7.0 on an Astrorock for a 165# sailor is not a bad combination for light
winds, if you back off the downhaul and outhaul a bit to keep the sail full.
Use a big fin, too.

I think today's Des Moines winds will be a copy of yesterday's--just barely.
Worth a look on a Friday afternoon. I will be out there later today.

Mike and I were at Des Moines yesterday. I was on 11.0/FW/70, Mike on
8.5/Go/70. It was light. We got a few rides. Later I slogged in to rig down.
Mike stayed out. It blipped up again, so he got a few more rides.

I expect the same today. I will be out there later this afternoon myself.

Dick, what link are you using for Pt. Robinson, or phone number? Today the
biggest number I saw was NW12. Now it's reporting N07.

Today's high tide is about 3:00 at a modest 8'. Small swing again, so the tidal
currents will be low. Yesterday we didn't even notice the ebbing current.

Will anyone with experience at Des Moines venture a forcast for this
afternoon (Marine Forcast is calling for 5-15 from the North)? What
about Wenatchee on Sunday? After missing the Tuesday wind I am
itching for a sail. FYI....my bigest gear is a 7.0 and old Astrorock.

Rick, I'm loaded, however I'll be giving a lesson at
Gustcastle. The wind is forecasted to be light...maybe
I'll get a few runs after the lesson.

Friday, I'll be ready to rock. I plan on DesMoines
after work...pray for wind....

The smoke on the river cleared not long after you left Rosey. It dropped off
to a rousing 3.2 sesh at about the same time you hit paydirt at Rufus.
Needlesss to say, the swell was not bad. But towards 7:30-7:45 it picked up
again, so we called it a day. I'm still limping from getting ragdolled once
too often, but it was worth it . . . especially since the wife will have to
mow the lawn until the leg and arm heal.

Had a good hour of it until it dropped a bit and I considered rigging up.

great 4.7 session for nearly an hour until around 6:15. Then, when it often
further mellows, it spiked up to 3.5 conditions rather quickly. It stayed
that way until dark and Bob & I got brief sessions on 4.0's but they were

MacLean's forecast for today:
<begin paste>
A ridge is building just offshore with northerly flow over the region this
morning. A thermal trough is expected to develop along the coast today
increasing the offshore flow. Gradients in the gorge should be easterly today.
Along the coast, the thermal trough should be far enough east to limit NW wind
development. Sunny across the region with highs near 80 in the gorge and near 70
on the coast.
The central and eastern gorge should see light east wind today. The west end
should see east wind building to the 18-24 range, strongest around Stevenson.
Sauvies Island should be NNW 12-16 this afternoon. Jones Beach should be light.
The north coast should be NE 10-15 switching to north 10-15 this afternoon. The
central coast should also be NE to north in the 10-15 range. The south coast
should be NE 10-15. SW swell 6 feet at 17 seconds.
<end paste>

I think this translates into good prospects for a northerly on the Sound today.
NWS at 3:30am is giving us their usual noncommital:

TODAY...LIGHT WIND BECOMING N 10 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 1 FT OR LESS.

which could be about anything.

Today's tides: high tide 1:00 at intermediate level with small swings.
Favorable.

Airplanes are taking off to the north out of SeaTac already this morning.

This all adds up to decent sailing prospects for this afternoon, for big gear.
I will be down at Des Moines after work. Came in early to leave early.

Tentative dates for City League (all Wednesday evenings):

     May 12, 19, 26
     June 2, 9, 16, 23 (BBQ and/or make-up date)

The usual place at Magnuson Park, plus a couple of evenings at Des
Moines marina like last year. I may also try to have a pre-race clinic
on May 8, after the Urban Surf swap.

Stay tuned for more info.

I have an 8-8 Dill and an AmiPro mast that I want to lose if you get
multiple offers.

I have not sailed mine for about 8 years. But it sure jibes nice.

F2 Ride 274. Condition is B, 5 years old, 102L. Good first short board,
especially for heavier sailers. Fin, upgraded straps. $350 OBO.

Naish wave board, 8'6", 92L. Condition is A+. The board is about 3-4 years
old, but I bought it at a factory clean-out last year and it was essentially
new, still wrapped in shipping packaging. Apparently it was stored in the
back of a warehouse for 2+ years. I only sailed it twice. Good wave board
for heavier sailers (like me). I just have too much over-lapping stuff and
need to thin out the rack. Straps and fin. $500 OBO.

Wow, a legendary Ampro Grey Wave and a Dill from the halcyon days...
That stuff is "worth" more than you will ever get for it.

Steady 40 mph for hours at purdy, but we got screwed by NOAA. Their
forcast was 15-25. That usually means 5-15 and every one brought
slalom gear. A quick trip home for some small stuff made for a good
afternoon. The tide was going out and made for the best conditions I
have seen there in 5 years. About 10 people out. Bob P

Twarn't me. I was at Rosie, where several of the locals didn't get out. They
got there too late for the 4.2 sesh, and left before the 3.0 sesh. I don't
know WHAT that period in between was . . . it sure wasn't SAILING time.
