Happy New Year!

The Enumclaw Speed Ditch is open and running today. East winds are running
25G35. The temperature is about 35, so bring a lot of hot chocolate. All
the cows are in the barn today.

I'm thinking of taking a two-week trip to the Barbados in February and
would like to get any information you might have on

* How the sailing is.
* How the equipment is.
* Where to stay.
* If it's possible to rent a house, and if so, through whom.
* Other cool things about the Barbados.

Thanks!

-Dan

Hello all,
I will be in Cabarete most of January and will need to rent gear. Last year
I rented from Bic Center which was pretty good.
Any suggestions of other good places?
Anyone else from this group going?

Happy New Years!
PS, there is about 4"of snow here in Hood River today!

Day 11 here in Los Barriles. Yesterday was epic. 4.2 with 8 foot
swells. Water is warm, no reports of needlefish, tho one guy in La
Ventana believes it correlates to consecutive days of wind plus use
of blue colored gear. Should be a high probablity today for blue
sails as the forcast is for 20-30...I am sticking with green sails.

Generally it has not been a good month in Baja, not like November. I
have had about 5 days of 6.0 sailing then yesterday it went off.

Swells are moving through in large hills. Go up one and down the
other side on the way out, and surf them back in. Not the best for
jumping tho ramps appear on the swells. Great for surfing back in.

Still quite warm during the days...80 degrees air and 70 degree
water. Hope you are all enjoying your 48 (?) degree water...

Marvin, JD and I showed up at Brown's Pt Saturday
morning and rigged up for a session at about 11:00 AM
Saturday morning. The forecast was for winds 10-20,
which it was; one minute it was 10 the next it was 20.
Not a lot of fun. Temperatures struggled to reach 40
deg. We made a few short runs and decided to call it
quits. The idea of getting overpowered and fatigued
in the cold put a damper on things. Came back in by
1:30 and called it a day. I had my 8.5, Marvin had a
7.5 and JD also had his 7.5 We could have done better
with 6.7 or thereabouts.

We spent some time in Cabo Pulmo (near Los Barilles) earlier this
spring. We looked into the cab ride and decided it was nearly as
inexpensive just to rent a car for the week. It turned out to be a
good decision for us as we were able to do a lot of exploring.

I have done neither, but I have talk with others who have done one or both.
Here is what I understand.

Cab fare is about $90 US in a big van than hold several people to split the
fare. From the Cabo airport it's about 65 miles and some 80 minutes ride.

The bus is dirt-cheap, but I don't know of a way to find out the schedule unless
you call down there. If you are going to Vela, call them. They probably know.

Vela's website for Baja talks about this stuff in more detail. See it at

This was not the purdy clam guy. Too bad, but there is more than one
of these guys. At least they are finally getting jail time. There is
millions to be made poaching(stealing, not cooking in milk !)
clams. You can make $20,000 a nite. E-Z money and until now almost no
penalty if you do get caught. Purdy clam guy probably won't face jail
time enen though he stold millions from Pierce county. The best we
can hope is that he has to give some of the money back and stay out
of Henderson Bay where we sail. His bardge will be there till a storm
puts it on the beach. Bob Paradise

P.S. Orca's are in the south sound. Looks like Tuesday we may get to
sail with them. Seen off Browns point and Fox island saturday.

It was good to OP 11.2m/FW/70cm conditions from 11 to 4pm. Started
at about 11am during a lull. Schlogged a little at first then the
wind really kicked in for the rest of the day. 3 or 4 kiters were
out having a good time. My 9.7m would have been a little easier to
handle but I was too lazy to re-rig.

Tandem sailing = sailing with another person on the board. Start with this
picture:
http://www.aikimaui.com/gallery/Photo.cfm?image=104 then hit the next button.
Should be about 12 photos in all of Kevin and partner sailing.

The winds on Maui's north shore were too northerly and light today, so
Kihei was the place to be. World champion professional windsurfer
Kevin Pritchard showed up and put on a tandem sailing show. See the
photos at:

Could this be the new competitive event for the PWA? ;)

I found this on the windsurfingmag web site and found it interesting:

Maui Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Schools in Jeopardy

HST Windsurfing and Kitesurfing School on Maui
Aloha friends of windsurfing and kitesurfing,
Presently there is legislation pending at the Maui County level that
would fatally affect my ability to continue to offer quality
windsurfing and kitesurfing instruction on Maui. I strongly believe
that you can make a difference by emailing to the County Council
members a statement of support.

Present legislation before the County Council Parks Committee would
eliminate all instruction for any ocean sport on weekends and County
recognized holidays - fully one third of the calendar.
Present legislation bans lessons at several county parks including
the popular windsurfing Kihei pavilion (Ma Poina Oe Lau Beach
Park.) While we seldom teach there, when the wind is Kona, (South)
it's the only safe venue and there is no basis for removing it as a
legal access point.
Additionally, the fees for getting a permit to teach are set to
increase from 2 to 12 fold or more. This is a lifestyle business,
not a cash cow, and any additional expenses further jeopardize the
viability of the business.

WHY are they doing this?
Council members believe they are protecting the resident population
from overcrowded beach parks. They have in mind small south and
west shore surf parks like Cove and Puamana and even Luaniupoko that
have very limited parking. They have not stopped to realize that
Kanaha Beach Park, on the north shore, has hundreds of parking
stalls, and has already solved user conflict issues years ago. Even
though HST and windsurfing have enjoyed an impeccable reputation for
quality instruction and harmony with other beach users, we are
still "lumped in" with the scofflaws who have overcrowded the south
and west shore parks.

How can you help?
Simply send an email telling the Council members that the situation
at Kanaha is not "broken" and that new rules are not necessary
there. The limitations may force quality operators out of business
which would be a disappointment to you. Please use your own
experience and words as that will be most powerful.
Please send your email to the following:
  county.council@...;charmaine.tavares@...;
mayors.office@...; parks.dept@...;

In closing, I want to thank you for your support during the last 18
years that I have been teaching at Kanaha. I may not have taught
each of you personally, but I hope that any contact with me or my
staff has been positive for you and your windsurfing or kitesurfing
experience.
Mahalo and aloha,
