Kanaha Park is on the north side of Maui withing walking distance of the
airport. Kihei is on the South side.

I stayed at kailua a couple years ago. Rented a unit in a 3 plex. Looking right
at kailua beach park. Could walk to the gear trailer, rent gear, rig, go sail.
Beautiful spot. Plan to rig big due to variable winds. May want to look up the
shops in advance to reserve gear. When I was there in may 07 there was only one
trailer with limited choices. If you go take a walk east to lanakai for a
breathtaking beautiful beach.

Need recommendations on which island and which beach beginner windsurfers can
take lessons and rent gear in Hawaii this spring. Thanks!

To present an opposing view... 2 years ago we spent a week on Oahu in waimanalo
beach to get married, just south of Kailua (same wind)... problem was there was
no wind during the entire period (last week of May) while there was good wind
the entire time on Maui. According to guys in the Kailua Naish shop, the wind
there is much less reliable than Maui, and they said I should expect there to be
somewhere around 3 sailable days per week, all of which would be on larger gear.
Maui has a unique wind setup with the venturi between Haleakala and the older
volcanic peak NE of Wailuku that boosts the wind speeds. Oahu doesn't have this
setup, so the only way you will get sailable wind is during the stronger trades.

If you goal is to learn windsurfing, I would pass on Oahu. The best spot by far
is bonaire. We have been there 4x and the place is perfect for learning, though
it is a full travel day to get there (if you go, fly through Houston on
Continental).

Go to Kailua at the northeast side of Oahu. It has a great beach, is on on shore
wind in a bay, and there are mobile rental shops with rigged gear ready for
sailing. Maui does not have rigged gear on the beach, you have to rent the gear,
drive it to the beach, rig, derig, etc etc (true at the last time I was there 3
years ago).

Don,

If you stay in the center of the bay, west of the boat ramp, you should be fine
any time of the year. I have seen the sign you mention, and I believe it refers
to staying out of the northeast section of Dungeness Harbor during winter
months. The following link provides some information:

http://www.newdungenesslighthouse.com/Graphics/dungenessmap.gif

The important thing to know is that Dungeness Spit itself is closed to boaters
of any kind, all year long.

In fact, if the wind got some North in it, it blows in Kihei...typical trades
N-E will funnel in The Volcano and the West Maui Mountain...when it is more
North than N-E, a 15 kts on the north shore will be at least 10 even more kts in
Kihei. In Fact, it is often windier in Kihei...as for the reef, south swell
happen in summer..and Kihei got some nice break also. Kalama Park can deliver
solide down the line, Sunset is shallow and is a fin eater, but nice side-off
late in the day.., as well as kihei beach(I think this is the name of the first
beach when entering kihei).

There can be good bump and jump sailable wind in Kihei , when it is not
sailable wind on the North shore. But Sailing at Kihei to save drive time
IMHO is not worth it. Kanaha beach park has better beach, access , rigging
area, showers, parking, and has reef breaks/waves. Rental shops are in
Kahului , so if the wind speed doesn't match your rental gear then it's easy
from Kanaha to go back to the shop for sail and board changes. If you hit
it right, there can be good windsurfing in the winter months, but you could
also get days of no sailable wind. Two years ago in February I was skunked
- no sailable winds for two weeks. But if no wind - there are lots of other
activities to do on Maui

I'll be staying in Makena and was planning to w-surf from Kanaha, but Kihei
would much closer place if it works.

From reading iwindsurf forums it stuck in my head, that south part (Makena,
Kihei) is sharkier than Kanaha.

Also one of the colleagues, who was on Maui several times, just told me
that there is runoff from plantations polluting waters of Kihei.

Is it something to watch out for or I am just being paranoid? J

best place for learning. It's not shallow, there is often a wind shadow the
first 100 yards and if there is waves, the water can get quite choppy to
uphaul. On a positive not, it is often windy!! I think Kihei is under
estimate for learning how to windsurf, the whater is usually calmer in the
fall to winter months and easier to learn on.

Have fun.

Tiger sharks are all around the Islands, but relative to the number of
people in the water - very, very few bites. Just don't bleed or pee in your
wet suit and don't get stranded way outside the reef with a breakdown;
always sail where others are sailing. I don't know about pollution; I
guess it could be more polluted in Kihei , but I have not noticed it.

I am planning Maui vacation in December, so was trying to read up all I can
about the island.

Can't agree more, I don't know what happen lately, but I've been to Maui in
2003 for 4 months..than in 2006 for 2 weeks...and the aloha spirit was more
in the book than in real life. People wasn't that much friendly and did not
smile much..but this year, I went for a month in Oct-Nov for a month...and
what a change !! My friend who lived there for over 10 years was out of the
island for over a year and he also went in Nov...and without talking to each
other about that, the first thing he told me was...I don't know what
happen..but gee they were so friendly and they do smile at you?? So, I see a
big positive change in the attitude and this is great. I never been to
Kailua, but Maui is the island for windsurfing. However, Kanaha is not the
best place for learning.

Have fun.

A less conventional approach to windsurf in Hawaii, especially for a
beginner. Go to Kailua at the northeast side of Oahu. It has a great beach,
is on on shore wind in a bay, and there are mobile rental shops with rigged
gear ready for sailing. Maui does not have rigged gear on the beach, you
have to rent the gear, drive it to the beach, rig, derig, etc etc (true at

I just tried a different computer... still here at work... and yeah, it loaded
and worked great. Maybe this one has Java on it and the other one does not.
Anyway, very cool, I'll play with it at home today. (Still frustrated I didn't
make it all the way around this time, though.) Thanks again.

As far as a write up about it... good idea. What I think is interesting to note
and remember... is the weather conditions and wind conditions of the day. And
the variety of participants and their equipment used. Also - I think Mark D. has
some good info and data about it on his "Long Distance Records" page... and Mark
(or others) have written about some of the rounding's that were done by himself
and others (Mark L. and Pepi, for example)... during the years that I wasn't
involved. And Wright W. and I might remember (and others that may still be
around, that read Windtalk, but rarely post)... anyway, we might remember some
of the details of the first "Official Winduro". So... a little historical
perspective might be interesting also.

GPS action replay is a Java Applet, and it may take some time to load -
first to load the applet, then the maps, then the tracks. I tested it and it
loads, though there are occasional delays/hangups.

Try it at home and let me know how it worked out. If someone wants to submit
a short write up of the Winduro (either 2008 or 2009) I can add that. It
would be nice to get an official Winduro web site. Someone already has the
winduro.com domain name (though no web site) but miwinduro.com is still
available :-)

Thanks Michal -

However is this link working?

Maybe it's cause I'm at work... and these computers won't allow it. But, is this
working for anybody else?

I will try it at home tomorrow.

Thanks for the effort, Greg

I have uploaded the 2009 Winduro GPS tracks to my web site. I also
added tracks from my rounding earlier this year, and from my Halloween
incomplete attempt:

http://www.theprussaks.com/windsurfing/

I only have 2 tracks from 2009 - I did not have my GPS for the Winduro
- did anyone else have a GPS track that you want to send to me?

Michal

High tide is about 10am this morning so the out going currents will be opposite
the winds. I am going to get there around 11AM.

John, are you sailing with gloves/mitts?

The air is supposedly 42F at 9am and gets to 46F by 1pm. Temperatures below
50 are outside of my comfort zone, but 46 is better than 42 J

High tide and south wind at DesMoines Sunday morning and I don't like that
combination there so I'm thinking about some 9AM sailin at NewCastle. The
saturday evening forcast for south sound looks promising.
.SUN...SW WIND RISING TO 20 TO 30 KT BY MIDMORNING...EXCEPT BECOMING NW 5 TO
15 KT OVER THE N SOUND. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT...EXCEPT SUBSIDING OVER THE N
SOUND. A CHANCE OF SHOWERS.
Hope it happens.

Got an hour of massively OPd 6.7m/101L/34 where a 4.7m would have been more
appropriate, except for the fact the 6.7m was already rigged and darkness was
fast approaching. I've been very impressed with the 6.7 (northwave '09 model
511) ability to handle such OPd conditions. Less impressed with the 34cm drake
fin that came with the starboard futura 101L which has spin-out tendencies
(though the board is great). Considering a different smaller (select perhaps)
fin if anybody has recommendations. In-spite of the OPd session made nearly all
jibes and am happy now.

To search4wind and harness line failure... I've observed pre-failure signs in
dakine lines with small sand-like particles (dis-integrated line fibers)
observed under the clear line tubing... When I have dis-mantled such lines I
discovered they were badly worn and pro-actively replaced them.

Started with a 6.2 92 L, ended with a 4.2, 77L. It was still coming up when I
left. Snapped a harness line halfway across. It was a lot of work coming back
in. Instead of going home to grab another line I used two outhaul lines wrapped
around eachother and tied them on, worked quite well. I'm putting an outhaul
line in my impact vest pocket in case that happens again. Phillip........
