Yesterday, at Magnuson, I was given the chance to instruct a first timer (my 35
year old surfing cousin "Colin"). Well, we spent an hour on dry land standing
on my Prodigy going through the motions with a 5.2. We covered everything. Wind
was about 10 - 12 mph. The conditions were perfect so I sent him out under close
supervision. In short, he nailed it. He uphauled, beared off, reached, tacked,
jibed, and even sheeted out when overpowered in the gusts. I think he fell twice
in an hour and a half. I saw him sail completely powered through a jibe before
flipping the sail and heading back out on a reach. It was awesome. He even
sailed my 8.2 for a few runs before calling it a day. He said "it was so much
fun" and "holy cow, that board is so stable!".
On the way home, we stopped for a burrito and discussed board types and
technique. He will be making a purchase very soon. Another joins the addiction!
