There is nothing special about SUP unless you want to go into the surf.
There it gets very personal and needs to be specialized or else you are going
to
get a lot of foam and fiberglass thrown at you in unpredictable and
unpleasant ways as you try to punch thru the whitewater.
On the lake - if it floats, try it. Long board, Go board, Start board,
Kona board, even Don's JP 135 SX Board. They all work and you get a great
workout.
The key, especially for your first time, its gotta be calm. Paddling into
even a very light breeze can bring you almost to a halt. Downwind, your bod
acts like a sail. You just have to remember that you need to paddle
back.....unless you planned a downwinder.
Also, unless you are going into the surf, you dont need a fancy paddle. I
have decided not to patent my invention of "The Ghetto Paddle" and will give
descriptions on a different post.

ordering some SUP paddles for it. If it can double as a SUP board on non windy
days, is a smaller fin better than my standard 63 Cms fin ?

Bruce paddles his Go board on the lake and it works fine - very stable.
I don't think it'd be any good in the surf.
