FWIW, I sailed around the bridge on a formula board about 2 weeks ago in a S
wind that was probably right around 10 mph. I sailed downwind through the
bridge on the Seattle side and upwind on Mercer Island side. The wind on
Seattle side was very weak, and on the Mercer Island side it was a lot
better and seemed a lot easier to go upwind. It took me I think about 3
tacks under the bridge to do it (non-planing). I think on the Seattle side I
would have to battle with not enough wind. The wind had some W component to
it, so the Seattle end was in a wind shadow. Naturally, after you make it
past the bridge on Mercer Island side you have to contend with the chop off
the bridge, but in a light wind I think that the chop with some wind is
better than flat water with light wind.
Was it windy in '04? Perhaps the choice of side for crossing depends on the
wind, but in a light wind I would rather go for the Mercer Island side.

The Seattle side is MUCH easier to get through, for many reasons. A few
brave souls attempted to pass through the Mercer Island side in '04, but
were largely just spit back out J

I'm still in for Saturday (tomorrow). By the way, is it preferred to
pass under I-90 on the mercer island side or seattle side? I've never
sailed up around there before.
