I went to your REI seminar and loved it. Yet I never got out and did anything. I
was hoping you had somebody you knew who was starting to get involved in the
sport and was looking for a training partner. I am interested in getting back

track and jeep roads on this course we encountered several flats. We
switched to slime tubes (highly recommended) and they are working like
a charm (we should have known better). It was a blast of a 3 day
weekend and the Long Course leg will challenge even the most
experienced riders!

Hi
I am a 32 y.o. male who has recently moved to NM from FL. I am looking
for people to train with and join/form a team. I have done 4 24-hour
races, a 3-day expedition race and multiple sprints in FL and GA. I am
acclimatizing to the altitude change by hiking in the Sandia wilderness
and biking around town.  It appears that I've missed the AR and
Orienteering meets for the year though I found the La Luz run for next
spring and the Quadrathon and Cyclocross racing schedules.

Any training and/or race advice is appreciated. Are there any other
local magazines besides Duke City Fit that list NM/AZ/CO races? Do you
use any other gadgets besides slime,tire liners and thorn resistant
tubes to defang these awful goathead thorns?

New Mexico Orienteers
Doc Long Mini-Rogain this Saturday the 28th of October

Join us at the spectacular Doc Long Picnic Area on the way to Sandia Crest for
our annual Mini-Rogaine. In a Rogaine competitors start out at the same time
and choose their own routes to the control flags. The goal of a Rogaine is to
find as many control flags as one can in a specified amount of time. It's
really a race against the clock. There are two divisions this year, 2hr and 4hr
time limits. The 2 hour division will start at Noon while the 4 hour will start
earlier at 10 a.m. Each control flag you find is worth a given number of
points, from 1 to 5 depending on the difficulty of the flag to find. If you get
back
later then your divisions time limit, penalty points are assessed on your total
control flag score. The persons with the highest scores win in each division.

If you haven't come out to an orienteering event this year or if you've never
been to the Doc Long Area, this is a must do event! Come join us for a great
day of incredible fall orienteering.

This might make a good training outing for the Quest! There are some pretty
grueling climbs at the Caldera at high elevation.  If you get this more then

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is opening it's gates again this year to
Mountain Bikers on two summer weekends. You can ride the Forest Roads of the
Caldera on
- June 24 or 25
- August 12 or 13.

This year we are able to combine all of the roads previously used (except
one*). This gives us 60+ miles of forest roads this year. There will be no set
routes, you're free to choose your own route from the map of available forest
roads. (There are two old logging roads that have more of a single track feel,
the Abrigo loop and the Headquarters loop.)

*Preserve Road VC0301, which everyone agreed is a fantastic segment, is not
available. The Valles Caldera has not completed it's Archaeologic survey of
this segment. New segments in the Northwestern part of the Preserve have been

A New Season of Orienteering Begins

The New Mexico Orienteers will begin their fourth season of events on Saturday,
March 25th, with an Orienteering Meet at Doc Long Picnic Area on Sandia Crest
Road, Northeast of Albuquerque (see website for map). The meet will include
Beginner to Advanced courses starting at 10am to 2pm and closing at 3pm.
“We’re excited to be able to compete on our recently completed map of this
area,“ said Greg Kendall Vice President of the Club.  “It’s great terrain for
orienteering with lots of tree filled hills, valleys and creeks to explore. Up
until the end of last year we were limited to our maps for the Rendija Canyon
area of Los Alamos. We’re excited about the opportunity to expand with new maps
in new areas of the state. We get quite a few people driving to our Los Alamos
meets from Albuquerque, and as far away as Texas and Colorado. Plus those of us
in Los Alamos are getting new exciting terrain to explore.”

On Saturday April 8th NMO will be offering a Night Orienteering event on a
recently mapped area in Bayo Canyon. Registration will begin at 7:30 pm at the
Opsahl house (141 Chamisa St. on Barranca Mesa in Los Alamos). The first start
will be at 8:00 pm and continue until 9:00 pm. Course closes at 10:30 pm.  Two
courses will be offered: Short and Long. This is a great opportunity to test
your navigation skills after dark.  To compete in the Night O’ competitors will
need a compass, a hand held flashlight and/or a headlamp (no bright lanterns
please). Control markers will have reflective tape on them to facilitate
finding them in the dark. “We did our first Night O’ last October and it was a
great success,” said Greg.

Fees: Adult $8,  Juniors (9-18 yrs old) $5, Additional adult on a team $5
(Members save $2 on above fees). Addition junior on a team $2. Kids 8 and under
free. Compasses can be rented for $1 each. Everyone is invited. For more

Orienteering Event on Valles Caldera National Preserve

Have you been looking forward to a chance to take a map and compass and head
out across the Valles Grande? Well this is it. On January 28th the Valles
Caldera National Preserve will open it’s doors for a special Orienteering Event
put on by the New Mexico Orienteers. The group had planned to do a Ski/Snowshoe
Orienteering event but chances of there being enough snow looks slim at best.
Instead, the Orienteers will setup three courses that will be done on foot
(unless we actually do get snow). The courses will include a Long Course, Short
Course and Sprint. (the Sprint is designed to be done very quickly.) This is
the first time that the Valles Caldera has offered this type of event and it
looks to be a unique and fun filled experience for everyone.

If your new to the sport, the New Mexico Orienteers will have members ready to
teach you the basics. There are compasses for rent ($1) in case you don’t own
one. You will be given a map at the start of the course that indicates the
position of eight to twelve control flags that are hidden in different
locations. Your job is to navigage your way across the Valles Grande and find
these flags as quickly as possible. This is a fun activity that provides great
exercise for all ages and abilities.

Reservations are required for this event and can be made at the Valles Caldera
website (www.vallescaldera.gov) or by phone at 866-382-5537. The cost is $16
per person which includes the day use permit fee for the Valles Caldera
National Preserve. Kids ( 6 and under) are free.

You may start your chosen course anytime between 10:00 am and noon. All courses
will close at 3 pm. Check in and depart from the Welcome Center. Carry water
and snacks. Bring plenty of appropriate layered clothing. It get’s cold up
there!

The main entrance to the Valles Caldera National Preserve is located between
mile marker 39 and 40 between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos along State Highway
4. Enter at the main gate and proceed down the dirt or snow packed road
approximately two miles to the Welcome Center staging area. No pets, other than
registered assistance dogs are permitted on the Preserve. Please do not plan on
leaving pets in vehicles at parking area. The north facing road is plowed and
snow packed and often icy. Four wheel drive or chains may be required depending
on conditions. Be prepared for winter driving conditions.

Hi everyone,

I would like to get a group together to hike the entire Sandia Crest
trail.  I believe its 26 miles and I'm not sure the elevation gain,
I'm guessing 4000-5000 feet.  You start around Hwy 40 and Hwy 14 and
end up in Placitas.  Kim and I are planning on doing this Sat,
November 5th.  Start at dawn and finish when we finish.

I can't stress enough, if you plan to do this BE PREPARED!!!  Bring
plenty of food and water.  The only place to refresh your water supply
will be at the tram about 2/3 of the way thru the hike.  Also bring
headlamps I'm not sure if it will be dark when we finish.

Using the rating system, this hikes rates at a 35 (black diamond =
Strenuous/difficult)  For reference the La Luz rates at a 21.

If you haven't already, take a look at the articles posted under the
FILES section.  Most of them are geared towards the novice racer.  At
a minimun, you'll get an idea of what you've gotten yourself into and
how to prepare for the race.  I will be uploading some more articles
soon so be sure to check back before the race.  But if this
information leaves some questions unanswered then reply to this post

The loop that runs around the Placitas area that accesses the Piedra
Lisa TH and Del Agua TH is now FREE.  I was there Sunday, and there
are signs taped over the pay tubes.  I am not sure if the same applies
to the Tunnel Springs TH or not as I haven't been over there in awhile.

Sat May 14, regular meet, 10 am - 2 pm (starts between 10-1), Rendija South, start+finish at Pajarito trailhead

 

DIRECTIONS: Guaje Pines cemetary - start/finish may be on the east or the west side of the cemetary, see meet directions to be sure. They are only a couple of hundred meters apart, and you pass the east side first. In either case, the tents and tables at the start/finish should be visible to the right of the road.

From Pojoaque take Rte 502 to Los Alamos. Continue on 502/Trinity Drive to the intersection with Diamond Drive (major intersection; Diamond is a 4 lane road). Get in right lane when approaching Diamond. Turn right on Diamond and follow it past three traffic lights and the golf course. Just past the golf course, you will pass a fire station on the left. Immediately after the fire station, turn left onto Range Rd. Follow Range Rd to where it bends left towards the entrance to the cemetery. Park and descend a dirt road to the start/finish on the east or west side of the cemetery.
