Looking for horses...
Hey Everyone!
Kenny's current Certification class is getting ready to graduate.
Part of the student's final exam is to start a new unbroke, teach it
to walk, trot and canter, teach it to self-load in the trailer,
trailride it in the mountains, teach it to stand politely for shoes,
etc. They need two more unbrokes (a horse that has never been
tacked, never had a rider) for test horses (no stallions please).
The cost is $375 and the students will have two weeks to work with
the horses and get scored on 13 different exercises. If the horses
arrive at Kenny's the weekend of June 17 - 18, the students can
start working with them when class starts on Monday June 19. The
horses will be finished Friday June 30. The owners of the horses
should come in Friday the 30th to work with the student and their
horse to learn what their horse has learned, that way they can carry
on the training when they get home. The horses will get a nice,
solid foundation and a great start.
If you know of anyone who might have a horse, please have them get
in touch with me at (540) 882 3697.

MEMORANDUM To: AHC Recreation Organizations From: American Horse Council Re: Radanovich "Right-to-Ride" Bill Passes House
Date: May 17, 2006
Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed Congressman George Radanovich's "Right-to-Ride" bill (H.R. 586). The bill is intended to protect the use and
access of pack and saddle stock animals on public lands, wilderness areas, national monuments, and other areas that are administered by the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, or the Forest Service where there is a historical tradition of such use.
The legislation would require that these federal agencies manage these lands to preserve and facilitate the traditional and continued use and access of horses to these areas.
During the debate on the legislation on the House floor, Congressman Radanovich (R-CA) stated:
"Perhaps no other activity is more synonymous with the exploration of our vast open lands than that of the use of pack and saddle stock. Who could forget those images of President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir on horseback at what was to become the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Parks? While some claim that this bill singles out pack and saddle use and
affords it greater consideration than other forms of recreation or commercial use, I would argue that pack and saddle use has played a far greater historic role on our public lands, particularly in our western states, than simply recreation. What may be perceived by some today as recreation was once a vital part of everyday living throughout our Nation's history."
The industry must now turn its attention to the Senate bill (S. 781), which has been introduced by Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID).

>>Dear SK,
>>Once again, your calls and e-mails have won the day in Congress! Earlier today, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously approved an amendment -- the Rahall-Whitfield-Sweeney-Spratt amendment -- to stop the commercial sale and slaughter of wild horses and burros. You and so many other HSUS supporters got so many calls and e-mails into the offices of your Members of Congress over the last few days that the traditional opponents of the legislation in the House
caved in and agreed to support the amendment. Last year, this identical amendment passed by a vote of 249-159, which was a very decisive vote in our favor. But today, that vote was unanimous in support of the horses!
>>The fight to protect wild horses is a key component of the larger goal of ending all horse slaughter for human consumption. As you know, there are nearly 100,000 horses sent to three foreign-owned slaughterhouses operating in the United States. The horses are shipped in cattle trucks and sent to slaughterhouses, where these majestic animals are dismembered and then exported in order to please the palates of consumers in Belgium, France, and Japan. While this was a hugely important win today, now we must get the same result in the U.S. Senate. Please contact your two U.S. Senators and urge them to co-sponsor S. 1915, the Ensign-Landrieu bill to stop horse
slaughter. >>https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2006_horse_slaughter3/ug5nn84153jii7? >> We will provide you with updates as the vote in the Senate approaches, and future votes in the House. But let's not ease up. The horses are counting on our vigilance and our vigor in putting a stop to slaughter. Please share this good news with your friends and family and urge them to take action, too. >>https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2006_horse_slaughter3/forward/ug5nn84153jii7? >> >>Thank you for your support, and congratulations to all. >> >>Sincerely, Wayne Pacelle, President & CEO >>The Humane Society of the United States >> >>**************************************** >>Copyright (c) 2005 The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). I figured someone out there may be able to help with this...
I have a friend that has a TB mare and she doesn't know her registered name or race history. I was wondering if anyone has access to the Jockey Club Registry and can find out for us. Also, I have another friend with the same situation with a TB Gelding. I looked online and for $35 the Jockey Club will send you a report. But, I thought maybe someone could help without having to take that route just yet. ;o)
The mare's tattoo looks like:
A16320 or A16326 (the last number we couldn't tell if it was a 0 or a 6)
The mare is a bay and she's approx. 9yrs - 10 yrs. , so the owner has been told.

Fairfax County Park Authority may give a Special Use Zone to gas-
powered remote-control Model Aircraft to take off and fly right in
the middle of the Park's "Horne" Property (which is the parkland
trail equestrians use to get to the Battlefield). They are expecting
horses and six-foot long flying "weed eaters" to share the same
parcel of land, just off Bull Run Post Office Road. This is no joke:
it is already in the FCPA Master Plan (online) unless there is
considerable opposition to it! PLEASE write an email to
parkmail@... stating that you are a hiker and rider,
and you are OPPOSED to the possibility of horses and gas-powered
model aircraft sharing the same space on the Parkland near Bull Run
Post Office Road. These things are VERY LOUD, and there is no
guarantee of safety for riders, hikers or anyone riding in a car on
Bull Run Post Office Road, as these flying (untethered) aircraft
will definitely spook any trail horse that comes along, expecting a
peaceful trail to the Battlefield. Wind shift or an inexperienced
handler can cause a terrible, dangerous disaster. There is an
undeniable and inherent risk in mixing horses and gas-powered model
aircraft.
Thank you!!

Subject: Battlefield Equestrian Society Guided Historical Ride w/ The Black Horse Troop, Cavalry Reenactors
Members and Friends of the BES:
How many times have you ridden the Battlefield and thought "did a skirmish occur in this spot" or "did the Yankees hide behind this ridge?". So many of us have spent hours riding upon the 5200 acres of parkland and yet, very few can relay (or impress) our riding partners with any factual historical data. Now is your chance to Live the History, as presented by The Black Horse Cavalry Troop, 4th Virginia Cavalry, Co. H.
The Black Horse is a group of living historians established for the purpose of challenging their horses and each other in accurately reenacting and honoring cavalrymen of the past. The unit equips and train as an authentic, disciplined Confederate cavalry. The unit was founded in 1972 and currently has 25 members. The Black Horse participates in Civil War battle reenactments, living histories, presentations for the public, and films. (For more information, see http://blackhorsetroop.org/).
Young or old, this guided tour is perfectly suited for all history enthusiasts. Seize the moment and join the BES for another fun, and educational, ride upon our beautiful Manassas National Battle Park.
Feel free to call me should you have any questions. I am at your service. Please pass on if you know of a fellow equestrian who may be interested.

Sydney,
Toby has been living at our home in
Potomac for the past year, but sadly, could not continue to live with us, because of the effect he had on my asthma. We just surrendered him to the Humane Society of Washington (on Ga Ave just over the DC line from Silver Spring) on Sunday, as Rachel is literally in the process of moving to grad school. They feel very optimistic about his chances for adoption, but he could easily be adopted by someone we sent down there. In fact, it would make us feel so much better if he went to someone we know. We could even provide the adopter with the little cat gym he's been loving while at our home, as we still have it. The fees for adoption are very low, and he is already neutered, so that would be a savings. We could also get you his medical records from our vet.
FYI, he would probably do best in a home without small children (less than 5 yo or so) as he is easily startled. He also has a tendency to gain weight, so he cannot be free
fed as can most cats. He needs to have his food portion controlled, more like dogs. I'll look forward to hearing about any possibilities you may have. I'll try to get Rachel to send a picture. Again, thanks for your efforts.

==== CCT Trailfest a big success; 130' Giles Run bridge open on Laurel Hill Greenway From the beautiful weather to the sizable crowds and friendly atmosphere, Trailfest (May 6) was a success from one end of the Cross County Trail to the other. Starting at 7 am, Ffx Co. Supervisor Connolly led the
first of five ribbon cuttings at Georgetown Pike. Other attendees at one or more Trailfest events included Supervisors Dubois, Gross, Bulova, Hyland, Smyth, Congressman Tom Davis, the Ffx Co Park Authority Board (whose rowdy cheering added to the festivities) and Trails Planner Jenny Pate, whose unflinching efforts made the event (and trail) possible. A group of hikers led by Cliff Noyes (Sierra Club/ MWROP) started at first light and hiked the entire 41 miles. Randy Kerr led off-road bikers (MORE), including Joe Chudzik (champion of the Mason Neck Trial); they rode the entire 41 miles, pausing for most of the ribbon cuttings. At the last one in Laurel Hill, they rode through a paper barrier as part of the celebration. FTAS founder Bill Niedringhaus spoke at four of the events, remarking on the role of volunteers in getting the CCT constructed. Cynthia Lam, one of only three who completed the first Cross County Hike with Bill in 1999, addressed the crowds at Wakefield.
Many volunteer groups participated in one or more of the celebrations, including the MORE, Great Falls Trailblazers, Vienna Trails, Hunter Valley Riding Club, Clifton Horse Society, Sierra Club MWROP, Potomac Appalachian Trail Club, the Potomac Heritage Trail Association and of course, FTAS. Many of these groups held their own Trailfest events at various points along the trail. The Ffx Co Park Authority also held dozens of family activities up and down the trail. There were buttons, water bottles, T-shirts, and a huge cake sporting the colorful Trailfest logo.
In Laurel Hill the festivities climaxed, with a band, a bar and refreshment tent. Planned fireworks were cancelled, unfortunately, due to high winds. The Greenway is now open, including a just-built 130' bridge over Giles Run, and a restored stonedust surface passing under the old railroad bridge (1911) under Furnace Road. The main Trailfest message: celebration that the CCT is connected, but that it is
still a work in progress, and the spine for many current and future trails. **************************
This muzzle is new and has never been used. They are priced at $69.95
at local tack stores. I would like $50.00 for this muzzle which will
include shipping.

The VDHMA is putting on a draft Horse, mule and donkey show on August 14,
2006 at the Warrenton Show grounds. We need a trail judge. We were
hoping to get Toni Bell of Bell's saddlery, but we can't seem to get a
current telephone number.
Can someone recommend a trail judge and how to reach the trail judge.
Thanks,
Martha Duchnowski

My friend is looking for a place to retire her gelding in the
Haymarket/Aldie area. He is only 14 but no longer sound except for
light trail rides. He is vry friendly to people and horses!
Just wanted to remind everyone of the parade. I need to know who is coming so I can get a count. If I don't get anyone, of course I will let the parade committee know we are canceling.
You do need to be a member of NHS and if you do want to ride and are not a member we will have the forms.
If you have always wanted to ride and were afraid to try your horse, this is a very low key, short distanced parade. This is a good one to get your feet wet with and get hooked on the parade fever.
