Due to heavy rains overnight, and a change in today's forecast to rain extending through more of the day, the excessively wet conditions in the field to be used for parking and the excessively wet trail conditions has forced us to reschedule the Nov. 1 NHS Crystal Crown Judged Trail Ride to next Sunday, Nov. 7.
We will still need volunteers for the reschedule event on Nov. 7. If you can help please contact Event Manager, Marlys Shoup at MarlysShoup@... or 703-754-4981.
"Trooper Jess" a 25 year old quarter horse went missing from his pasture on
October 20. A search for days revealed nothing. Jess reappeared in his pasture
October 28. The feeling is that NetPosse and other rapid communication methods
such as this message board put pressure on whomever had Jess and ultimately
facilitated his return.
For those that responded to our earlier pleas for volunteers, thank you for stepping up. If you have not heard a response from Marlys with your duties for Sunday's event please give her a call at 703-402-3725 (cell) or 703-754-4981 (home) to let her know you are waiting for your assignment duties. As we get closer to the event on Sunday things get a little more hectic and she may have not had time to acknowledge your emails.
For those who have not offered to volunteer ... yet, we still have room for more volunteers. Please give Marlys a call and let her know when you are available to volunteer.
Participants: We will post your "ride start times" on the NHS website at approximately 5pm on Saturday, October 31. Please go to www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org for the link.

I have brand new - just took the tags off and figured out it's too small - Rambo XL turnout sheet for sale. Perfect for your hairy chunky monkey pony with big shoulders ... Keeps the rain off w/o heating them up!
All,
I have a yearling filly for sale (18 months old). She is a beautiful palomino
(I will provide pictures if asked). She has been imprinted and will load in a
trailer, stand for clippers and baths; she has had professional lunge line
training. Unfortunately, she has a bone cyst on her left hind which is causing
minor lameness. I have had the cyst injected with steroids to see if we can get
it to fill in.
She is broodmare sound now and may be riding sound in six months but I can not
promise it. She has beautiful movement and bloodlines and would make a nice
addition to any breeding program. I can not us her in my own program as she is a
daughter of my stallion. I am selling her as broodmare sound only.
I have her listed for $2500 or best offer.
If interested please contact me.

On Tuesday, October 20, Trooper Jess, a 16 Hand, black, quarter horse gelding
with a white blaze and brand "TJ" on left hip, escaped from his field near
Barnesville, in Montgomery County, Maryland and is still missing. I have a
poster I can send if anyone wants to see what the horse looks like. Just email
me and I will forward the email I received with the poster imbedded in the
email.
Please forward this to others in your email address book who may be interested in helping.
Hi Folks,
We are just a few days away from the NHS Crystal Crown Judged Trail Ride ... and we NEED volunteers. We need a total of at least 40 NHS volunteers for this event to be a success, and we have less than half that. This is the largest NHS event of the year, held at one of the most beautiful trail locations in the state, Sky Meadows State Park in Delaplane, VA ... (just past Marshall, VA).
A portion of the revenue from this event goes back to benefit the equestrian trail system at Sky Meadows State Park. In fact, Sky Meadows has asked the NHS for assistance and input on creating and opening new equestrian trails in the upcoming year. The remaining revenue earned from this event goes to benefit other NHS projects during the year.
Absolutely no experience is necessary to volunteer for the event. You will be given complete written instructions on what your duties will be. Some volunteer positions are just for a half day or less, but most are required to stay for the entire event. Please let us know where you can help. For complete details of the event, and directions to the site, go to our website at www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org
Event Date: This Sunday, November 1
Location: Sky Meadows State Park, Delaplane, VA (the next exit west of Marshall, VA)
Available Volunteer Positions:

JUDGES, JUDGES, JUDGES and Judges helpers
This is our most critical need. We need at least one judge and one judge's helper at each of the 10 obstacles. Again, no experience is necessary other than "good horse sense". You will be provided with a very detail written description of obstacle and a written description of how to judge the participant. Judges helpers will help reset the obstacle between participants.
20 PEOPLE NEEDED !!!!!!!!
Start Time: 7:15am
End Time: End of event (approximately 4 or 5pm, depending on which obstacle you are on.)
Course Tear Down/Clean up & pack up
Approximately 5 volunteers needed
Start Time: 4pm
End Time: 6pm
Final Trail Check (Monday)
2 or 3 volunteers needed
Start Time: Check with Marlys
Once around the trail (can be on horseback) to confirm that all debris has been picked up and location/site is left in better condition than what it was when we arrived for the event!
Again, ... this event is just a few days away ... and we NEED your help.
If you can help in any way, please contact Marlys Shoup at:
The NHS Crystal Crown Judged Pleasure Ride is the largest event and most one-day revenue earning event of the year for the NHS.. For this event to be successful we still need NHS volunteers. Hi NHS,
I hope the fall is going well for you and your horses and want to start with a
note to remind you that NHS elections will be held this coming Wednesday at the
Membership Meeting. Don't forget to vote for your favorite candidate.
As for Silver Lake, if you have not made a trip there to visit the park, please
do. I think you will be impressed and will want to use it to its fullest. The
first public Master Planning process meeting was held on Tuesday with some
equestrian friendly people, some that could care less about horses, and some
that are frightened to have horse manure wash into the lake. The second Master
Planning meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 27th at Mountain View
Elementary School. I would encourage those who can, to attend and speak a few
kind words for equestrian activities at this wonderful park. Current
suggestions can be found online at the attached link.
http://www.pwcparks.org/ParkDevelopment/SilverLake/tabid/143/Default.aspx
There is also a Blog where you can voice your thoughts on what the Park should
be used for, both short term and longer term. Could you imagine a Frying Pan
Park like atmosphere with another hundred acres containing trails that come and
go from the equestrian area?
Thank you all for following these developments along with me and the rest of
NHS.
Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg

Hi NHS,
Don't forget to attend the meeting to vote, or send in your absentee ballot
voting for the person you think will serve you best in each position (check with
them first to make sure they want to though).
I have had three inputs so far for people definately running for positions:
Keith Evans for Trail Ride Director, Marlys Shoup for Quartermaster, and Whitney
Stringham for Director of Operations. I have had interest shown by two
individuals for Public Relations, and will announce their names as soon as I
receive positive confirmation they want the position.
I have heard there are also other members interested in running, and as soon as
I get a positive "yes, I want to run for ... position", I'll announce them as
well. Anyone with some interest in running but still on the fence, please email
me and I will send a list of board member responsibilities for each of the
positions that has been used the last several years. My address is on the
website.
Thank you all for continuing to support NHS.
Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg
Don't forget, Nokesville Horse Society is hosting another schooling pleasure
driving show this Sunday at Bristoe Battlefield Park in No. Virginia. This is
a great opportunity to learn about pleasure driving. You will learn about
proper turnout, but you can come as you are turnout as long as it is clean, well
fitting and safe.
Our judge is our local driving expert - MaryAlice Matheson. Our topic is
proper turnout as well as any questions you may have regarding how to show in a
Carriage pleasure driving show.
We have a super junior class as well as a ground driving class. The pattern
will be determined by the judge.
Consider supporting this low key educational show by either volunteering (**we
need you**), being an exhibitor or even donating to the NHS. We do get quite a
bit of spectators, so this is a chance to educate the local community about
carriage driving as well. Vendors are welcome at no charge.
To learn more please visit:
