Hi NHS,

Great news received today! Too bad it was too late to make the newsletter. NHS
is finally a certified 501c3 charity non-profit organization on file with the
IRS and we can now operate tax free as well as recieve donations tax free for
the better good of the equestrian in Northern Virginia!

Many people were involved in the process for the submission in July as well as
in crafting repeated answers to the multiple questions posed by the IRS in their
effort to deny us what has so long been justly deserved. I would like to put
out a special thank you to Rose Murphy for her endless work as Treasurer
ensuring the books were kept in order, to Bobbi McIntyre for directing the
latest submission last year as well as submitting the final response last month,
to Karen Basala for her totally awsome writeup to answer the final truly probing
letter from our IRS handler, to Tim Tinsman for his "unofficial" legal advice,
to Jeff Shoup for his many reviews and suggestions, and to all the former NHS
Board leaders who had a hand in keeping NHS headed in the right direction for
this official day.

Now, the task at hand is to make the best use of the status we possibly can. I
will be seeking someone with the experience in accepting non-profit donations
that can make NHS even better. Please let me know if you have the time and
desire to make this happen.

And...anyone with a desire to donate for specific equestrian or equestrian
related educational purposes, you now have an avenue to do it to the benefit of
the equestrian in the Northern Virginia area, and report it as tax deductible in
your next income or business tax return.

It's a great day for NHS.

Thank you all for all that you do.

Greetings fellow horse-lovers,

A year ago, my beautiful, scrappy, stubborn little horse, Rusty, died at age 32 after a bout with cancer. He left behind two equine friends, Sterling, his loyal lieutenant and Gus, Sterling's now-closest friend. Recently, we learned that our beloved Sterling, 23, also is confronting cancer, and, sadly, his travels on this planet are likely to end sooner than we expected.

I know he and Rusty will delight in seeing one another again, but we will miss our boy terribly, and Gus, a 15-year-old QH gelding, will miss his dearest companion even more. No horse should ever, ever be alone, and we are determined to find, as quickly as we can, a friend for Gus who can step in and help him with the grieving process. Sterling never got over Rusty's departure, but having Gus there was a huge help to him.

So, in short, my husband and I are on a mission to find and adopt a very special horse companion for Gus, preferably a middle-aged to senior gelding who is barefoot and who enjoys being a leader in charge of a small herd. Our horses are companion animals only, so this home would be an ideal fit for a horse who deserves to graze and relax and simply be a horse for the rest of his life.

We have a special place in our hearts for the hard-luck cases -- horses who have worked extremely hard over their lifetimes, are dealing with some sort of impairment or have been subject to ill treatment, or perhaps are confronting a precarious future because they aren't saleable but their owners can no longer care for them. In short, we like adopting the kinds of horses that many people might not be willing to take on.

Do you know of any such horses who you think would enjoy living with us? We have an 8-acre place in Nokesville, much of it fenced for the horses, a small pond for the critters to splash in, good vittles every day and a comfy barn that the horses can come and go from as they please. We also have dogs, so we would want a horse who was comfortable around canines.

Please feel free to contact me via e-mail if you have any suggestions or ideas. We already are in contact with area shelters, but we wanted to broaden our search even more.

Blessings to you,

Pamela Barnett

To fellow horse and trail lovers:

The Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society has added a new perk to being a member.  A free weekend of camping at Artillery Ridge Campground May 15th thru 17th!  You must be a member and attend the work detail on the 16th.  We'll have a membership meeting with potluck dinner that evening, too, so people that can't usually attend will be able to make one.

You must call Artillery Ridge Campground and reserve your site and corral, if bringing a horse.  First, you must be a member; if needed, membership forms [please be sure to include your email address for all club correspondence] and Diane Fait's address are on our web site at http://thegehs.org/membership.html.  Then, you can reserve your site; Artillery Ridge's phone number is 717-334-1288 [make sure to tell them why you're coming so they can put you with the party].  Remember, when you come for the weekend you must show your membership card.

Come enjoy riding the battlefield, visiting with friends, and help the GEHS continue to keep the trails open.  And don't forget the end of year prizes!  Every time you attend a work party, your name goes into the drawing for a gift certificate to a restaurant and the person who attends the most work parties will get a free year of GEHS membership.

Let's see if we can make this an annual event.
I'm looking forward to seeing you all there!

Hi Everyone,
Well, the time has finally come for our first Western Schooling Show of the 2009
show season.
As always we will need volunteers to make the show run smoothly. We will need:

Someone to man the gate - all day (in shifts)
People to help set up & tear down the trail class
Registration - in the afternoon
Timer for speed events
Line judge for keyhole

If you can help with any of these things please let us know. Don't forget, you
can earn free classes for volunteering and you don't have to be the one showing.
You don't even have to be showing at the Western show. You can volunteer at the
Western show and use your free classes at one of the other NHS shows if you
would like, just let us know which show manager we need to inform.

It's suppose to be a beautiful day Saturday. Hope to see you at the show.

Hi everyone,
I have followed this thread on my Carriage Driving List and thought
that there may be someone in this area who might be able to help. You
can read the email thread below for details, but the story in a
nutshell is that Tiny Rubenstein, a wonderful, compassionate,
sweetheart of a person died way too soon and now her non-horsey
husband is doing his best to find the perfect home for Tiny's horses.

We don't have room at our place for one of Tiny's horses, but maybe
you do...or you know someone who does.

Warmest regards,

Subject: Need homes for Tiny's horses - Can you help?

Another message from Tiny's (Katana's) husband Jeff:

Many thanks again to so many of you who have reached out to me with
your kind thoughts and prayers. The calendar tells me it's been
almost four weeks without Tiny, but for me time seems to be standing
still sometimes.

Years ago I promised Tiny that should anything ever happen to her I would do
everything in my power to ensure that each of her horses is placed in
an excellent home. She and I both knew that I'm not a horse person,
and that the horses really need to be cared for long-term by someone
who is.

I recall now that shortly after we built the farm 20 years ago, when
we had not been married very long, one of Tiny's old riding
instructors died, and Tiny instantly offered to take in and care for
any one of Carol's old retired horses. Before I could even try to
talk her out of it, I found myself driving Tiny with the trailer out
to pick up that huge old "Tar Boy" and bringing him back home to
occupy one of our vacant stalls. "Are you sure you want to do this,
Tiny? You can't use that old horse for anything, can you?" She just
smiled and replied, "All of those horses need good homes. I just wish
I could take more." So I shut up. Tiny cared for Tar Boy just like
her own horses. A few years later Tar died of old age, and Tiny cried
for him, just like she'd owned him his whole life. I remember
comforting her and telling her that Tar was indeed fortunate that
someone like her was there to take him in and make his last few years
healthy and comfortable. She said it was the least she could do. At
the time I thought that was overly generous, but over the years I've
learned that was just the way she was.

I know - and those of you who knew Tiny know too - that Tiny was a
very special person. I know she was special, but I've also learned
that her generosity, passion, and compassion for the health and
welfare of horses (and all animals) is not unique to her. Tagging
along with her to all the shows and CDE's over the years I was often
struck by the great number of others in the horse community who share
those qualities.

So . now I need to reach out to those of you who may be able to help
out Tiny and her horses the way Tiny helped her friend Carol and hers.
My mission now is to find excellent homes for all of Tiny's horses.
She has 24. I've had discussions with the barn staff as well as our
veterinarian and farrier, and we've decided that 6 of the horses are
too old and/or too health-challenged to move out, so we will be
keeping and caring for those until the end of their natural lives.
(Which will likely be less than a few years.) I delivered one horse
to a new home today. So I now have 17 horses that need excellent homes.

Based on what I know Tiny would want for her horses, I have come up
with three criteria that qualify an excellent home. An excellent home
is one in which the horse owner:

(a) Genuinely cares passionately about the health, safety, and comfort of
the horse,

(b) Demonstrates the experience, knowledge, and skills required to be able
to provide appropriate care for the health, safety, and comfort needs of the
horse, and

(c) Has the financial wherewithal to be able to provide that appropriate
level of care for the lifetime of the horse.

Are you one of those generous people who could help me out by
providing an excellent home for one of Tiny's horses? If you are, I
would very much appreciate hearing from you. I have created a little
questionnaire to help me gather information from prospective adopters
in order to choose the best home for each horse. I also made up a
document that briefly describes each of the available horses. You can
download, view, and/or print that questionnaire and horse description
document at www.shadowfax.com My address, email, and fax number are
on the last page of the questionnaire, so you can send it to me after
completing it.

To clarify, I am not expecting any payment for any of the horses.
Under certain circumstances I may be willing to help with
transportation expenses as well. The important thing is to find a
home for each horse that Tiny would be happy with.

Please forward this message to anyone you think might be able to help.
And to anyone who might know anyone who might be able to help. Feel
free to contact me with any questions.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Subject: Sad news from Jeff Rubenstein

I am Tiny's (Katana's) husband Jeff. I'm a wreck, and I don't know
the right way to say this, but I thought it was important to let
everyone know.

Tiny has had severe health challenges for at least the last 25 years
of our 30 year marriage. Last week she developed difficulty
breathing, and it got so bad that she actually went to the doctor. It
turns out that she had contracted the flu. Because of her other
health problems, she developed pneumonia and was hospitalized. The
pneumonia became very bad, and then got even worse, so she was
transferred by ambulance to the ICU at the hospital in Syracuse.
After five days on a ventilator, with many IV's of a broad range of
broad spectrum heavy-duty antibiotics and antifungal medicines, and
very good and competent doctors and nurses doing everything they
could, Tiny lost the battle tonight. I was with her when her heart
stopped, as were some friends and family. I am absolutely sure that
right now she is in the land of the Rainbow Bridge, no longer
suffering any pain, smiling, laughing, and frolicking with the dozens
of old friends she has longed to see and be with again.

The CD-L people have been her close and long-distance friends for many
years. Like many of you, Tiny enjoyed hundreds of hours reading
through the posts here. Some she learned from, some she laughed at,
and some made her angry. But she still considered (almost everyone a
friend. My keyboard is now covered with tears, but - as I said - I
thought it was important to let everyone know. I'm not a horse person
at heart, but I love Tiny more than anything and she knows that I will
do whatever it takes to be sure her horses (and other animals)
continue to live the safe, comfortable, healthy lives she provided
them. When I'm ready, I may be reaching out to people here to help me
find loving caring homes for her animals. I don't check the CD-L List
generally, but if anyone would like to contact me my email address is
jeff@....

Thank you.

2009 Dates: Saturday May 9, Sunday June 14, Saturday Sept 12, and Sunday October 4.

Place: Artillery Ridge Campground, 610 Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325

Time: Check-in by 9am; ready to ride by 10am.

Download forms at: http://thegehs.org/trailrideschedule.html

The Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society (GEHS) holds its annual trail rides to help support the equestrian trails at the Gettysburg Battlefield Military Park. Come join the fun and learn about Gettysburg’s history in the Civil War through the knowledge of our licensed battlefield tour guide. Our guide will inform you abut the battles that occurred throughout the 3-day siege, including Little Round Top and Picket’s Charge. The rides are 3-1/2 to 4 hours long during which you will be riding over the 2nd and 3rd day’s battle. There will be a short break at the half way point of your ride where you can dismount, stretch your legs, and water your horse. Drinks and a snack will be provided by the club.

You must have your own horse (we don't supply them) and we strongly recommend it wear shoes or protective boots.  The trails have a gravel base with rocky areas; riding on the grass is prohibited and subject to citation by the park rangers. We ride around traffic (tour buses, motorcycles, etc.); please make sure your horse is comfortable with the sights, smells, and noises it may encounter. It must also be comfortable standing still in a group while we are stopped when the guide is talking.

The registration fee of each ride is $40.00, which covers the guided ride and lunch when the ride is over. Please mail your entries in ASAP as there is a limit of 25 riders per the National Park Service rules. You will not be considered registered until the form and payment are received. Please include your negative Coggins or present before unloading your horse(s).

My beloved hound dissappeared off the farm Sunday afternoon in Middleburg. He
is a red brindle with four white paws white vest and tail tip, 6 yrs old, 45
lbs. Looks like a fox hound with a lighter faster build. His name is Beau and
he is very friendly. He had a collar and tags but they have an older non
working phone number. If you see a dog fitting this description please call
Jane at 703-338-5902

Hi NHS,

I was notified by Carol Hamann of a consignment sidewalk sale in Marshall this
week where Carol will have a table dedicated to the sale of some of Jenna's tack
for donating to the cure. I include her email below in its entirety.

Hi, My name is Carol Hamann, I have three daughters that are avid horse lovers
since they were small and were very active in the Fauquier 4H Horse Program. The
reason I am writing to you is to ask you to notify your members about our
endeavor to reach my youngest daughters goals. Four years ago she lost her
battle with Leukemia, she was 22 years old. Before that happened she set up her
own Relay for Life team with the American Cancer Society, in hopes of informing
as many people as possible about the need to support the fight against cancer by
becoming involved with the various community groups that are supporting the
fundraising effort, and supporting those that are grieving a loved one, and
celebrating with those that are survivors. Our family and friends and Jennifer's
friends and their families have followed through with her goals. This is the
5threlay for Team 4Jenna and we are hoping to reach $50,000. for the 5 years.
This is where our team needs your help. To meet this goal we need to raise
$11,058. for this year by May 30, 2009 relay event.

The Old Habit Consignment Shop in Marshall, Va is holding a three day sidewalk
sale April 9th through the 11th. They have offered a table just for Jennifer's
riding apparel her saddle and some of her older sisters riding things. All the
proceeds for these items will go towards the 4Jenna Relay Team, checks for
purchased items and/or donations will be made out to the American Cancer Society
and turned in to the relay Committee. Or your members can go online to the
Fauquier Relay for Life, under the 4Jenna team and make donations or purchase
Luminaries or Tiki Torches in Honor or Memory of one of their loved ones.

We are reaching out to your club to help make Jennifer's goals a reality. Please
help us sell her horse items.

Sincerely

Carol Hamann

Hi everyone,
For those of you who haven't heard by now, I have volunteered to be the
photographer for all the shows this year. Unfortunately, the first Driving Show
falls on Easter weekend and I'll be out of town visiting relatives. The show is
next Sat, April 11.
Is there anyone out there who would be able to take some pictures? I'm sure
Martha and her participants would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.

Subject: Fw: We sadly announce the passing of Sally Swift

It is with deep regret that I must inform you of the passing of our
beloved Sally Swift. Sally struggled with pneumonia since the end of
January, and although she tried very hard to get better, she was not
able to get back on her feet. She peacefully slipped away today as
one of her friends read to her. We are all deeply saddened by the
loss of this gifted, caring and gentle woman. The world will not be
the same without her. Our thoughts and prayers go out at this time to
Sally's family, friends and caregivers who are struggling with this
great loss.

You can be comforted to know that when Sally first discovered she was
seriously ill with pneumonia in January, she spoke about the peace she
felt in knowing that Centered Riding was in the good hands of such
competent caretakers. Centered Riding and Sally's Centered Riding
family meant the world to her - it and all of you captured her
greatest pride.

She spoke about knowing that no matter what the outcome of her illness
might be, Centered Riding was in "very good hands." She trusted the
many "loyal soldiers" who would carry on her life's work. What we can
do most to honor Sally now is to carry on her work of teaching others
with humility and integrity and offer others the unconditional
positive regard that Sally had for each and every person that came her
way.

Despite being a woman of great accomplishment, Sally never elevated
herself above others, but opened her heart with acceptance and
friendship. Today, all of us that knew Sally personally or came to
"know her" through her work, feel as though we HAVE lost a dear
friend. This is the enduring gift Sally has left for our hearts and
memories. Centered Riding is the enduring gift she has left for the
world.

Following is the announcement on our website regarding Sally's life
and accomplishments. More details will be posted about the memorial
service for Sally as they become known.

LEGENDARY WOMAN, AUTHOR AND FOUNDER OF CENTERED RIDING LEAVES THE
HORSE WORLD IN MOURNING

Sarah Rodman Swift known to her worldwide following as Sally Swift
passed away on April 2, 2009. Sally was less than three weeks away
from reaching her 96th birthday. She was born on April 20, 1913 in
Hingham, Massachusetts to Rodman Tod Swift and Elizabeth Townsend
Swift. She had one sister, Agnes, who died in 2004.

Sally Swift was known all over the world for her innovative
horse-riding methodology known as "Centered Riding.: She was the
author of two books Centered Riding and Centered Riding II, Further
Explorations which, together, have had sales of more than 860,000
copies worldwide in fifteen different languages. Sally was the
Founder of Centered Riding, Inc., which is the non-profit organization
that oversees the worldwide membership of instructors and horse riders.

Sally began Centered Riding at the age of 62 upon her retirement from
the Holstein Association in Brattleboro Vermont. Her first book,
Centered Riding was published in 1985.

In August of 2006, Sally Swift was inducted into the United States
Dressage Foundation's Hall of Fame. In June of 2008, she was
presented with the seventh annual Equine Industry Vision Award by
Pfizer Animal Health and American Horse Publications, an award which
recognizes innovation, ingenuity and service across the entire equine
market.

At the age of 7, Sally was diagnosed with scoliosis, lateral curvature
of the spine. She worked for many years with Mabel Ellsworth Todd,
author of "The Thinking Body" who believed that you could control
parts of your body with your mind when you couldn't direct them with
physical movement. Sally used concepts of her work with Mabel Todd to
develop the Four Basics of Centered Riding.

Sally was home-schooled until 7th grade and then attended Milton
Academy in Milton Massachusetts for her 7th through 12th grade
education. She graduated from Cornell University in 1947 with a B.S.
in agriculture. She worked for 21 years at the Holstein Association
of America located in Brattleboro, Vermont, retiring in 1975.

Upon her retirement from the Holstein Association in, Sally began
teaching her friends at the rate of $10 per lesson and $50 per day for
a clinic. She never advertised; her teachings spread by word of mouth.

Before long, she was going up and down the East coast with her
teachings. In the early 1980', when Sally was in her early seventies,
she began traveling to other locations in the U.S., Canada and
eventually to Europe. In 1988, at the age of 75, she went to
Australia to work alongside Richard Weis, who was her first
apprentice. Sally continued to be very active in Centered Riding
until her recent illness.

During the days of her illness, Sally was surrounded by her friends
and Centered Riding family who loved her. She was closely attended to
by her long-time friend, Lucile Bump, also of Brattleboro, her devoted
friend, Munson Hicks, her care-givers, and her special friend Francois
Lemaire de Ruffieu.

Sally was well-loved my many, many people. Despite her fame, breadth
of knowledge and accomplishments, she greeted all who journeyed down
her path with warmth and humbleness.

Plans for a memorial service in honor of Sally Swift are underway and
will be announced on this website. In lieu of flowers, donations in
Sally's memory can be made to:

   Centered Riding, Inc.
   P.O. Box 157
   Perkiomenville, PA

   Windham County Human Society

   P.O. Box 727
   Little Rock, AR 72203

   Amnesty International

The world was made a better place by Sally Swift, and the horse world
and all who came to love her deeply mourn her passing.

Am posting for a friend:

In May, one stall available at small, private retirement farm in Leesburg. My
extremely hard-to-keep retiree has resided there for three years, and absolutely
thrives in this environment.

Located off Evergreen Mills Road, easy access to Loudoun County Parkway and
Route 50.

Owner is extremely conscientious, knowledgeable, treats residents as her own.

Facility is six stall barn built into side of hill, so toasty in winters, cool
in summers. Fans on stalls, as well as aisles, too.

Excellent quality hay and grain provided, round bales in fields as needed.

Access to trails, and grass arena in front of property.

For more information, call 703-327-4476. Leave a message for Sandy.
