At one of our recent meetings it was asked if the NHS could do some cooperative buying for things like bedding shavings. Jimmie Jones contacted Southern States in Manassas and negotiated a fantastic price for the large black and gold bags that Southern States normally carries for bedding shavings. These are very nice shavings and the bags are tuff - many folks store these bags outside. .To make this happen we need to commit to a truckload of shavings, which is approximately 900 bags. The regular sale price for these shavings at Southern States is $4.99/bag. Jimmie has negotiated a great price of $3.99/bag.
Here is the
deal. If you are interested in participating you need to notify Jimmie of how many bags you want. We would like to have minimum orders of at least 10 bags/person. Once we get close to a commitment of 900 bags we will place the order and the truck will show up in about two weeks after the order is placed. The folks who have ordered the shavings will be notified when the truck has arrived and you will have a few days to pick up your order from Southern States. So far Jimmie has committed orders for 350 bags. If you are interested in this opportunity you need to contact Jimmie Jones directly at Awnman@... or (571) 330-7119 ASAP! Click on "Backroads: Clifton" under "Flair and Education" and then click on "A Clifton Christmas." The horse parade is featured in the first part of the slide show that follows and there are other Clifton sights shown as well. I'm looking for a place to keep my horse trailer this winter in the Clifton area. I need easy access to it for riding and emergencies and I can't get it out of the pasture I rent when the ground is so wet. Can you help me? It's a two horse trailer with a walk in tack. Thanks! Most horses would not hesitate to scarf down a carrot offered from the palm of a kind human hand, but Abby, a 5-year-old quarter horse who lives at Fairway Farm in Groton, was different.
Abby was a so-called PMU, or Pregnant Mare Urine horse, repeatedly impregnated and confined to a small stall for months at a time so her urine could be collected and used by Wyeth Laboratories to make the hormone replacement drug Premarin to relieve the symptoms of menopause.
Abby was in "total terrified mode" when she arrived a year ago, according to her owner, Gaile Greenwood of Niantic. The most human contact she would tolerate was a gentle pat on the butt. Caregivers had
to put down her food bucket and walk away before she would eat. She didn't know how to play with the other horses.
Abby was pretty, a paint with blue eyes and unusual markings, but she was alarmingly thin and had no muscle tone. She gulped water like crazy, Greenwood said, which could be a sign that she was deprived of liquid in an effort to make her urine more concentrated.
What a difference a year made.
On Tuesday, Abby took several treats from Greenwood and tossed her head playfully as she sniffed for more. She stood quietly while Greenwood and trainer Tricia Babcock injected a de-worming solution into her mouth. She hung out happily with two animal companions, a miniature horse named Gidget and Jeremiah the llama.
Abby's progress has astonished Babcock and Nancy Lupienski, the barn's owner. Babcock had predicted that Greenwood would not be able to ride Abby for at least five years because the horse was so apprehensive around humans. But Abby is
already walking, trotting and cantering with a rider in the saddle. She runs and plays with the other horses on the farm.
"Because of Gaile's devotion, this horse will have a normal life," said Babcock. "She will forget. Love conquers all."
Greenwood, who works in information systems at Pfizer Inc., rode horses as a girl. She had been away from them for decades when she learned of the PMU program through a friend.
Many farms in the United States and Canada closed their PMU operations after production of Premarin slowed last year, and some 30,000 horses were auctioned or sent to slaughterhouses. Several organi-zations run rescue programs, purchasing the horses in large numbers and seeking people willing to adopt the untamed, unschooled animals.
"I checked out the Web, and before I knew it I put a deposit on her," Greenwood said of Abby. She liked Abby's picture and the fact that the horse was not currently pregnant.
Greenwood paid $1,000 to
adopt Abby through an organization called United Pegasus. Rescuers are able to save the horses by paying farmers slightly more than they would get from slaughterhouses.
All Greenwood knows about the mare's past is that Abby was on a PMU farm in Canada and was later shipped to Pennsylvania.
Abby arrived in Groton on a Friday night, the only horse on a large trailer. She was soaked in sweat from the stress of the ride and terrified that she was going to be hurt. It took several people at the barn to "herd her" into a stall.
A few days later, Greenwood and Babcock attempted to show her around the property, and Abby escaped and bolted around the woods, revealing what Babcock said are show-quality gaits. The women eventually herded Abby into a pasture, and over the next several months, Greenwood made friends with the mare.
"I would go and plop myself on a rock and hang with her and talk to her," Greenwood said. "I promised her a million times that nothing
bad was ever going to happen."
Abby eventually allowed Greenwood to brush her hindquarters and finally let her touch her head. In August, Lupienski started training Abby, and the horse responded surprisingly well.
"She just took to everything once she figured out, 'That's what you want me to do,' '' Lupienski recalled.
Greenwood has a scrapbook chronicling Abby's progress from the day she arrived at the barn covered in sweat to the first time she allowed a rider on her back.
"You never saw a smile so big as when Gaile got on her for the first time," said Babcock.
Though Greenwood purchased Abby with no agenda other than saving her life, the women at the barn said Abby has potential to become a good show horse. Greenwood would like nothing more than to just ride her on trails, possibly taking her someday to a favorite spot in the Nehantic State Forest.
Abby and her owner are barn favorites at Fairway Farm, which is home to several show
horses. People who come for riding lessons love to see the blue-eyed mare, and the women who operate the business are full of admiration for Greenwood.
"Gaile is a remarkable woman," said Lupienski. "She had a lot of patience and a lot of love."
United Pegasus is online at www.unitedpegasus.com. The organization expects to receive a shipment of PMU horses in New Hampshire soon.

I always like to stay in touch with my animal loving friends this time of year. That's what the Holidays are all about. The days ahead are a time to pause, count our blessings, give thanks and reach out with love and kindness to family, friends and those less fortunate. It's a special time.
As 2004 comes to a close, I want to thank you for your past support and to share with you some of our past accomplishments (see below) that Pets & Animals in Distress and our dedicated volunteers have accomplished in 2004, those we are most proud of which I believe represent our commitment to
changing the way animals are helped and treated in our society.
It is only through the generosity and kindness of caring animal lovers like yourself that we can do what we do best to help and be a voice for the animals in need.
In the excitement of the Holiday Season let's not forget about our special "Best Friends"...the many animals that still depend on us.
We are a all volunteer run organization that strictly relies on donations. In order to push forward for another year and continue our struggle to help more animals in need, we are asking for your financial assistance this holiday season to help us continue our advocacy work to provide the lifesaving resources needed to help save, feed and spay / neuter more animals for the upcoming year.
I ask that you to please remember our "Best Friends" the Animals this Holiday Season by just taking a few minutes of your time to make a special year-end gift donation of $10, $25, 50, $100 or
what ever you can give would be deeply and greatly appreciated.
Lets work together to make 2005 a better, brighter and happier year for the animals.
Thank you again for your past support you have given to HELP US HELP THEM!

Hi! I just wanted to pass this site along to fellow CHS members who participated in the Christmas caroling. This is my personal photo site and my fiancée took pictures of nearly everyone who was there, so I thought it would be nice for them to see their pictures. Also, one of the observers told me to tell all the members "thank you" for participating in this event because she really appreciated everyone coming out and dressing up. Doesn't that just make you feel warm and fuzzy inside?
Merry Christmas, Katie and Doc

Happy Holidays from Pets & Animals Hurricane Season is Finally Over!
Pets & Animals in Distress Volunteer Travels 2,400 Miles to Deliver 44,000 lbs of donated Meow Mix Food to over 20 Animal Rescue Groups & Shelters in Florida and Alabama By Don Kjos
Saint Lucie Humane Society staff manager Brenda Knight and volunteers with special feline friends receiving donated Meow Mix food from Pets & Animals in Distress on Nov 6, 2004
TJ, a Maine Coon kitten that survived from a litter of 8 abandoned kittens. TJ says OPEN THIS BAG ... PLEASE!!!! When Florida and Alabama were hit by a string of four devastating hurricanes in rapid succession earlier this year, thousands of animals living in shelters throughout the two states were affected, while countless others were abandoned by owners fleeing their homes. To help alleviate the burden
on the many animal groups and volunteers caring for these animals, The Meow Mix Company donated 44,000 pounds of Meow Mix(R) brand cat food to go to Pets & Animals in Distress" November Hurricane Food Relief Drive.
Holiday Pet Tips
By Brenda Beck
From time to time we are all tempted to share many of the holiday foods and treats with our pets. It's important to know that pets are sensitive to sudden changes in their diets, which could cause upset stomachs and pancreatitis, a potentially deadly medical problem. Treats that are safe for people can be fatal if given to pets. Chocolate is one of them. It tastes great, but it contains a chemical similar to caffeine (theobromine), which is toxic to dogs and cats, causing diarrhea, seizures and/or irregular heartbeats. Holiday sweets should be kept out of your pets reach.
Cats love to play with anything resembling string. This includes loose ribbon from presents, tinsel and strung popcorn used for
decorations. If a cat swallows any of these objects, they can become lodged in the stomach and intestinal tract and can cause blockage. Signs of trouble include loss of appetite, vomiting and/or lethargy. Treatment can involve surgery to remove the foreign material. To avoid this life-threatening emergency, limit your cat's exposure and access to these items. A safer toy would be a balled up piece of colorful wrapping paper. Your cat can bat it around and keep themselves busy for hours!
For pets, a Christmas tree can appear to be a giant toy rack. Cats are notorious for trying to play with the ornaments and have been known to try and climb up the tree! Make certain that your tree is firmly placed in a wide-based, heavy stand to prevent it from falling. Fragile ornaments should be kept high up, out of kitty's reach.
Help our Furry Friends and Support Your Local Animal Shelter
By Brenda Beck
There's a place in your community where the hungry are fed, the
homeless are sheltered, and the abandoned are given care. It's your local animal shelter, which provides comfort and care for your community's unwanted animals. Your shelter offers many other services, too, for pets and their owners and even for people without pets. To do all this, your shelter relies on the support of people like you.
For animal lovers, helping out at a pet shelter is an easy choice. Donate a few days or just an afternoon to give the regular staff a break and fill in for vacationers. Even during the holidays, dogs need to be walked, cats need petting, and all animals need to be played with, fed, and have their cages cleaned. If you have young or sensitive children, a no-kill shelter is a good option (especially if you don't want to come home with a new pet!). You can also help out an animal shelter by collecting always-needed supplies such as cat litter, pet food of every variety, dog leashes, animal carriers, collars, and household goods such as
paper towels and garbage bags. Here are a few ways you can help animals, especially those at your local shelter:
Give a little bit. Donate food; old blankets and towels, or other needed supplies to your local shelter. Contribute to one of its special programs.
Lend a hand. Volunteer your time at your local shelter. Bathe and groom the animals, walk dogs, or play with cats. Help publicize an event.
Find that special someone. Choose your next pet from your local shelter. The shelter has many wonderful dogs and cats of different shapes and sizes waiting for a permanent, loving home.
Help spread the word. Tell your friends about your local shelter's services. Promote animal safety and responsible pet ownership.
Be a responsible pet owner. Keep current identification on your dog or cat at all times. Spay or neuter your pet. Always keep your dog or cat properly confined or supervised. In addition to the basics - food, water, shelter, and veterinary
care - give your pets lots of love and attention

We are a all volunteer-run organization and DO NOT get any government or grant funding but are supported entirely by donations from the generous hearts of animal lovers like you. New Provision Would Allow Slaughtering of Wild Horses By FELICITY BARRINGER
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 - In a reversal of three decades of government policy
that protected all wild horses, a provision approved by Congress last weekend would allow some of them to be sold to slaughterhouses.
The provision, attached to an omnibus spending bill by Senator Conrad Burns, Republican of Montana and chairman of the appropriations subcommittee with responsibility for the Interior Department, requires the sale of wild horses that have been rounded up and are more than 10 years old or have been unsuccessfully offered for adoption three times. The bill is awaiting final action.
The new language appears to override an existing requirement that those buying horses for adoption care for them for a year before assuming ownership, a hedge against horses being sold for slaughter. Now, the prospective law says, unwanted or old horses "shall be made available for sale without limitation."
There are about 37,000 horses and burros running free in 10 Western states, but most are in Nevada, said Maxine Shane, a spokeswoman for the
Reno office of the Bureau of Land Management. An additional 14,000 are in captivity in Oklahoma and Kansas, with a few thousand more in regional facilities. Ms. Shane estimated that at least 8,000 of the horses in captivity would be eligible for immediate sale to the highest bidder.
The fate of wild horses and burros in the West has been an emotional flashpoint and source of litigation. Horse lovers have fought to preserve and expand the herds, whose bloodlines trace back, at least partly, to the animals brought by the Conquistadors in the 16th century. Ranchers, whose cattle compete with the horses for forage and water on public lands throughout the arid West, want the 180 remaining herds thinned.
Advocates for the horses were furious that the legislation passed without a public hearing. "This went by so fast - it's almost like an autocratic government," said Karen Sussman, president of the International Society for the Protection of Mustangs and Burros. "What the
government does, what the B.L.M. does, is try to do these massive gathers. They put 30,000 horses in holding areas and plead with Congress to pass sale authority to execute them."
Tina Kreisher, a spokesman for the Interior Department, said Wednesday, "We did not ask for this language."
Ms. Shane, of the land management bureau, said: "This has been talked about off and on for 20 years. This is the first time the law has been changed in such a way."
The Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency caught between the two opposing forces, has for years rounded up horses and offered them for adoption, and has spent increasing amounts on this program. Its budget hovered at $30 million from the 2001 through 2004 fiscal years, but other Interior Department accounts are sometimes used, with Congressional approval, to pay costs in excess of this, Ms. Shane said.
About 6,600 wild horses and burros were adopted in the fiscal year that ended in September, and at
least 9,000 were rounded up, she said. Since the inception of the adoption program in 1973, more than 203,000 horses and burros have been adopted.
Before this measure, which the president is expected to sign after lawmakers resolve problems with language in the overall bill, older or unadoptable horses in the bureau's holding sites were returned to the range.
Rachel Buzzetti, the executive director of the Nevada Cattlemen's Association, said that the competition for forage between domestic livestock and wild animals - particularly horses and elk - had intensified along with the drought that has gripped the Rocky Mountain West for the past five years.
"If you have elk on your allotment and horses, you're not going to have any cattle left," Ms. Buzzetti said, using the bureau's term for a section of public land offered to private users for grazing.
She added that this year, in some areas of Nevada, wild animals had consumed two-thirds of the available
forage from every acre before cattle were let onto the land at the end of winter.
Ms. Sussman, however, said that "public lands ranching is the biggest welfare subsidy the public pays for." Last year the bureau charged $1.42 per acre per month to graze a cow.
"Most people who are in the horse program," she said, "have no clue how valuable, how critical those horses are for the landscape and the American people."

Chance is a 6 yo, 15.2 H Cremello gelding with beautiful blue eyes, who is available for adoption from the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue. He has been ridden both Western and English, but still needs a little saddle time so he should go to an intermediate rider who can help him learn everything he needs to know. He jumps up to 2.5 feet, but doesn't want to be the first one to do that. Otherwise, he is gentle, friendly and sensible and will be a very good student. Chance would make a good youth prospect and family horse, and has been demonstrated to be good with children. He has had immaculate care throughout his life and his new home will be able to demonstrate a level of care and attention to detail that is far above average, will have other horses for company, good references and will be local to
the northern Virginia area. Adoption applications can be obtained by e-mailing us at: info@... and can be submitted either electronically (preferred) or by snail mail. We will be collecting applications for the next few weeks, will check vet and farrier references, conduct farm visits and will select the best suited home for this nice guy. White Bird adopters must sign a send-back and no-breed agreement. Chance's adoption fee is $1500 and pictures of him can be seen on Petfinder at: http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=3742083&adTarget=468petsgeneral&SessionID=41b90db5677a2065-app3&display=&preview=&row=0&tmpl=&stat=
