Hi NHS!

At Wednesday's October NHS membership meeting, we will hold the
annual NHS vote by the membership for the 2009 NHS Officers and
Directors. NHS has solicited by both Newsletter and website,
volunteers willing to serve or volunteers to be nominated to fill the
leadership positions in NHS in the upcoming year. I have personally
been humbled by the recommendation of several members to take the
role of NHS President for the next year and would be happy to serve
if desired by you as a majority.

Having accepted all nominations, and consulting on roles our members
would like to fulfil, I have put together the nominated, and non-
contested, ballot on which to vote at the meeting. All write-ins are
welcome up to the time of the vote and we will be happy to consider
each individually. The current ballot includes:

President - Scott Helberg
Vice President - Karen Basala
Secretary - Faye Brewster
Treasurer - Rose Murphy
Quartermaster - Keith Evans
Events Coordinator - Jeff Shoup
Trail Development - Cleve Benton
Public Relations (interim) - Bobbi McIntyre
Director of Operations - Bobbi McIntyre
Trail Riding - Marlys Shoup
NHS Junior Board Representative - Scott Helberg

I thank those who have volunteered to serve the past year, as well as
those who have served the past eight years. And a special thank you
to our show managers that make our events the best oppurtunity for
fun for freindly competition among equestrians in Prince William
County.

All positions written above are open to election annually. If there
are other members who desire to volunteer their service, and would
serve to the benefit of the Mission and Vision of NHS, please bring
them forward to me (or Bobbi McIntyre) as requested on the website,
or at the member meeting.

Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg

Subject: Clean-Up at Silver Lake

WOW!! I want to take a moment to thank all of you who over time have
supported our efforts to positively manage our natural reources. As a
result of the clean-up at Silver Lake we will have removed 8 - 30
yard roll-offs of debris, trash, decks, fence, and more plastic than
anyone could have managed. We had more than 90 members of the public,
staff, board members and group members arrive under the threat of
rain and haul, cut, pull, drag, pry, sweat and celebrate the beauy of
Silver Lake. The old camp area has been cleaned with only a minimal
amount of work to be done and more than 30 bags of garbage were
pulled out from around the lake shore. We saw deer, fox, squirrels,
snakes, raptors, wasps, mosquitoes (we felt them), a variety of
birds, butterflies and much more. Our future plans hopefully will
include a formal institute on weeds since virtually every invasive
weed was alive and doing well on the property.

Many thanks to you for your support behind the scenes as well, we
could not have done this without each of you.

Thank you for your willingness to support this effort.

Hi Folks,

I have gotten some calls asking if the PW Park Authority clean up day is still on for Saturday (Sept. 27) at Silver Lake.  The answer is Yes.  According to the Park Authority, this is a rain or shine work day and will ONLY be postponed if the is an absolute deluge of rain on Saturday morning.  We have had only very light drizzle during the day her on Friday, so the weather conditions/site conditions should not prevent us from continuing with the work day.  If the Park Authority makes a decision to postpone, they will post the announcement on the Park Authority website shortly after 7am at www.pwcparks.org.  We will cross post any announcement on the NHS site at www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org

If you need more information about this activity, go to www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org and click on the link on the home page.  All questions regarding directions, what to bring, hours of the event, etc. are listed there.

Thanks for your support and we hope to see you Saturday at Silver Lake.

A friend of a friend in the Haymarket area is looking for a place that her 4-1/2 y/o daughter can take horseback riding lessons.  They have called around to a few area stables, but haven't had much luck.  If you know of a stable that teaches children that young, please call Anna at (571) 277-1001.

The Western Show has been cancelled tomorrow due to soft ground
outside the arena and standing water in and around the ring.

However, the cleanup at Silver Lake is still a go. Even if you do
not have time to support cleanup efforts, please stop by and see what
everyone is talking about with the promise that property has for
equestrian facilities and trails. For information call me. I will
be there from start to finish.

I thought someone might be short on horse power and I have more than I know what to do with. My horses are located on Logmill Rd in Haymarket. I am hoping to find someone who would just like to come out and spend some time on horses, but I might consider paying the right person. Please only 18+, I understand there are a lot of talented young riders, but the law doesn't see it that way, and my insurance doesn't allow any minors on the property. I am not looking to give riding lessons, I am looking only for someone who knows how to ride. I would love to find someone small enough to exercise a small pony (under 150#). Basically I have one well-broke horse who just isn't getting the time and attention he deserves. He has been ridden by a lot of beginners and shown, but hasn't been ridden much lately. I have been on him and ridden him a few times, he is not wild and does not kick, bite, buck, rear, etc. he is just lazy as sin. The worst thing he will do is just stand there. I have a 5 year old 11.1hh pony who was ridden by children (basically played follow the leader and gave pony rides) and is very gentle and easy to handle. He is lazy and doesn't have much riding experience, but he definitely needs some exercise. I have a VERY green mare that I am trying to get riding hours on myself, but do not feel comfortable riding when nobody is around (just incase). I would gladly allow someone who knows how to ride to come and ride the well-broke horse and/or the pony just for the company and to have someone there while I ride. I also have 4 other horses that I am doing ground-work with so basically I am out of hours in the day. I do have bridles, all of my horses direct rein exclusively (of course I would be happy if someone wanted to teach them to neck-rein). I have western saddles and I do have English girths, but I do not have an English saddle.

My schedule is very flexible, but I live in Fairfax and I don't want to drive during rush hour.

If anyone is interested please reply to: myhorses3@...
Please reply with your horse experience, what you are looking for, and any questions you have.

Thank you in advance for your time and I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi NHS,

As you have seen in a previous posting, I agree that we need a good
showing at Silver Lake from those not attending the Western Show. You
may have seen the announcement in the Manassas Journal or Potomac News
yesterday announcing the Co-sponsored event by Prince William County
Park Authority and Bull Run Mountain Conservancy. It was in an article
titled "Lend A Hand On National Public Lands Day". I have included the
paragraph from the article:

"The Prince William Park Authority in partnership with the Bull Run
Conservancy will work on their new jewel at Silver Lake in Haymarket on
Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for trail clearing
and general cleanup. The Park Authority is always so professional with
its projects and will provide gloves, trash bags, water, small hand
tools and first-aid kits. Please remember to wear long pants, closed-
toe shoes and a hat or sunscreen to protect yourself. Volunteers are
asked to meet at the old camp store area in front of the property on
Silver Lake Road just across from the Camp Snyder Boy Scout facility on
Antioch Road. Please call 703-792-4253 with any questions or simply
report for duty at 9 a.m."

Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg

Dear Horse Owners,

As you know, one of the goals of the Nokesville Horse Society was to increase awareness of the horse community in PW County and demonstrate that we are a “community”.  Over the years since the formation of the NHS in 2001 I think we have had some significant success in this endeavor.  In late 2004 I received a phone call from the attorney representing Toll Brothers, Mike Lubely.  For those who don’t know, Toll Brothers is one of the largest home builders/developers in our region, and the developer of Dominion Valley and several other developments in the Gainesville District (PW County).  These developments virtually eliminated all the private farms once used by horse owners in the Gainesville District for trail riding.

During this phone call Mr. Lubely asked me if Toll Brothers could give or provide some property to the horse community what would we need?  First off, I was a little surprised at the call and responded that we would be delighted to receive anything that Toll Brothers would be interested in giving back to the horse community.  Mr. Lubely went on to say that if they could find a 10 acre parcel, or so, how could it be used.  At this point I recognized Mr. Lubely did not know much about the horse community.  I explained that beggars can not be choosers, but a 10 acre parcel would not be of much value to the greater horse community except for uses such as an indoor and/or outdoor event ring.  What the horse community really needs is trails to replace the private trails that we have lost due to development.  I explained we would need hundreds of acres for trails or trail corridors.  Needless to say he was a little shocked and said it would be very difficult to provide this to the horse community.  At this point I truly thought any further discussions on the topic would never occur.

In early 2005 I received a call from Gainesville District Supervisor John Stirrup asking if I wanted to attend a meeting about possible park related opportunities for the horse community.  Jimmie Jones and I attended the meeting on behalf of the NHS.  Also in attendance in the meeting was the new PWC Park Authority Exec. Director, Jay Ellington, and to my surprise representatives from Toll Brothers.  What we soon found out was that Toll Brothers was in negotiations to purchase the former 200-plus acre campground property at Silver Lake and donate it to the Park Authority in exchange for a moderate increase in density in their existing Dominion Valley development in Haymarket, adjacent to the Silver Lake property.  Discussions continued for about 8 months identifying a trail network extending from Silver Lake to James Long Park, and proffer money for capital improvements to the proposed park at Silver Lake to include significant equestrian facilities.  Supervisor Stirrup and Park Authority Exec. Dir. Ellington also negotiated for proffer money to develop soccer and ball field improvements at James Long Park and Sudley Park, so that Silver Lake could remain primarily passive recreation and equestrian uses.

After about a year of planning and negotiations the proffer was about to be put before the Board of Supervisors for a vote.  This was recognized as one of the best proffer deals to benefit the public in exchange for an increased density in a development.  It included donated land for a much needed school site, a donation of an additional 66 acres to James Long Park, a practice football field for Battlefield High School, two soccer fields at James Long Park, completion of the stalled construction of ball fields at Sudley Park, improvements of Rt. 15 to four lanes, and equestrian trails, all built by Toll Brothers, plus over $2M in proffer dollars to the Park Authority for additional capital improvements to parks in Gainesville, PLUS the majority of the former campground at Silver Lake for the new equestrian park.

Two days before the vote before the Supervisors, it was announced in a small Gainesville newspaper that former Chairman of the County Supervisors, who lived in Dumfries, renegotiated the deal with Toll Brothers to give the $4M Silver Lake property lock, stock and barrel, free and clear to the Bull Run Mountain Conservancy (BRMC), without any communication whatsoever with Gainesville Supervisor John Stirrup.  Once Mr. Stirrup found out about this turn of events he called me immediately and said to get the word out to the horse community.  Due to tremendous outrage from the community the proffer agreement was again renegotiated within hours of the vote before the Board of Supervisors.  Toll Brothers agreed to give the Silver Lake property to the County Supervisors, not the Park Authority and not BRMC.  The proffer agreement gave the Supervisors the authority to give the property to the Park Authority, BRMC or another non-profit such as the Nokesville Horse Society.  The new agreement also requested that 45 acres be provided to Rainbow Therapeutic Riding Program.

So where are we today?  Nearly two years later, the property still remains in the hands of the Supervisors.  A vote was put forward by Supervisor Stirrup to give the property to the Park Authority.  It failed, 3 for and 5 against.  A counter proposal was made to give the property to BRMC.  It also failed, 3 for and 5 against.  BRMC has offered to create a “Natural Recreation Area”.  According to the BRMC website:

The owner of an adjoining 268 acre parcel has generously offered to give that land for the natural recreation area, more than doubling its size to just over 500 acres, provided that BRMC will own and manage the combined land area. The Conservancy intends to own this land in “trust” for the general public—in a manner similar to that of the Nature Conservancy and the Civil War Preservation Trust.

The opponents to this concept worry that giving away land currently owned by the “public”, to any private entity (including BRMC) could limit the accessibility and uses of this property since the public would no longer have any input to how the property would be used or developed, or even when the property can be made accessible for public uses.  The property would no longer be public.  It would be privately owned by BRMC.

The Board of Supervisors directed the County Executive Director’s office to try to negotiate a partnership agreement between the PWC Park Authority and BRMC.  Over the course of four months several proposals were discussed between the Park Authority, BRMC and the County Exec’s office.  No agreement could be reached.  The BRMC will not relinquish the requirement that BRMC must be given ownership of a large portion of this county property.

A new, and probably final vote, will be coming up before the Board of County Supervisors in the very near future.  However, the Park Authority has scheduled a “clean-up” day for Silver Lake to occur this Saturday, September 27 at 9am.  Many, if not all of the County Supervisors and the Park Authority Board will be on had to view this property during the clean-up day on Saturday.  The community has been invited to attend and help during this clean up day.  I can assure you that the BRMC will have a small army of volunteers at this clean up day to demonstrate their ability to “manage and own” this property.  It is my personal opinion that if the horse community has any chance of keeping this property in the hands of the public domain we must have an equal or larger display of volunteer work force.  If there was ever a time that you need to come out and volunteer for YOUR horse community, this Saturday is the day.  As you may know, the NHS also has a Western Schooling Show this Saturday at James Long Park, also in Haymarket.  I think it is equally important to have a large turn out at the Western Show to demonstrate the need for public equestrian facilities in our parks.  With the relative close proximity of Silver Lake to James Long Park, I am sure that our elected and appointed officials will also be going by or visiting James Long Park on this same day.

I think it is critical to the future of equestrian facilities at Silver Lake and trail opportunities in the Gainesville/Haymarket area that a significant turnout by the horse community must occur this Saturday.  If you have an interest in Western showing please attend the NHS Schooling Show at James Long Park this Saturday.  If you are a horse person, but do not have an interest in Western showing, We NEED You at Silver Lake this Saturday, Sept. 27 at 8:30am.  Please forward this very important email to anyone in your horse community that you feel can help this very important cause.  If you need any details for either activity, or just want to let me know that you are coming to show your support, email me at jeffshoup@... or call me at 703-402-3726.  I hope to see you Saturday.

be willing to pick him up promptly.... . no exceptions! I do not have

I wanted to make all those in Nokesville that may have animals in the
facinity of the event that will be occuring Oct 11th and 12th. This
event is a 9 mile stretch incompasing Nokesville, Brentsvill and
Bristoe. Soldiers will be marching toward bristoe from the other two
locations. Some infratry will be used at Bristoe and they will be
shooting canons as well. It looks like a great event to attend, but
be aware there may be some added traffic that weekend. Due to the
location I am relocating my horses because one of the canons will be
about 100 yards off my fence.

Hundreds to Re-enact Crucial Civil War March and Battle

Bristow, VA – Prince William County's Division of Historic
Preservation will commemorate the 145th anniversary of the Civil
War's Battle of Bristoe Station with a major living history event
from Oct. 10 to 12, 2008.

On Saturday, Oct. 11, Federal re-enactors
will march five miles to Bristoe Station along a route similar to the
one used by the Federal soldiers during the October 1863 battle.
The Federal forces will begin their march at Nokesville Community
Park and wind along Aden Road to Morsteller Drive. They will cross
Route 28 and march through the Bristow Village into the park.
The Confederate forces will take a 9 mile route beginning in
Nokesville -- along Fitzwater Drive, Kettle Run Road, across Route 28
and Bristow Village to the park. They will be pursued by the Federal
Cavalry who will travel past the park and on to the Brentsville
Courthouse Historic Centre. The Cavalry will camp there on Saturday
evening. Federal Cavalry under John Buford were at Brentsville when
the battle was fought in 1863.
The march will culminate Saturday afternoon with a re-enactment of
the opening phase of the Battle of Bristoe Station at 3 p.m. The
Confederates of General A.P. Hill's Third Corp were surprised and
defeated by the Federal II Corp under General G.K. Warren. More than
1,300 Confederates were killed, wounded or imprisoned and five
cannons were captured during this fight. Federal losses numbered more
than 500. Post-battle activities will include the collection of the
wounded, the processing of prisoners and the picketing of the
battlefield.
Other demonstrations are set from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct.
11 at Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park. Food will be
available on site provided by Skip's Barbeque.
Guided torchlight tours will be held Saturday evening, leaving the
battlefield parking area off 10th Alabama Lane every half-hour from 7
to 8:30 p.m. Admission to the tours is $3 for adults and $2 for
children ages 6-15; there will be no charge for ages 5 and under.
Participants are asked to wear comfortable shoes and clothes
appropriate for nighttime fall temperatures.
Music, military demonstrations and more tours are planned from 10
a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. The daytime admission to the park
is free, but donations are appreciated. 5$ per vehicle donation is
recommended.
The 133-acre Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park featuring
three miles of scenic walking and equestrian trails is open year-
round for self-guided tours, or by appointment for guided tours.
Guided tours are conducted weekends from May through September. For

Hi everyone,

Just got the word that the Conway Robinson Forest workday is
postponed. Please pass the word to those who were planning on
attending. Between Haymarket Day, the Gymkhana, and other events,
the decision was made to make it a different weekend.

Don't forget Silver Lake next weekend!

Hi NHS!

I know that everyone is busy this time of year and that the Western
Schooling show is also that Saturday, but NHS needs good showing from
those who are available.

The PWCPA is sponsoring a volunteer clean-up event and introduction
to Silver Lake on Saturday, September 27th starting at 9am. Many of
the County Supervisors will be present at the beginning and private
organizations such as Nokesville Horse Society, Bull Run Mountain
Conservancy, Prince William Conservation Alliance, and Prince William
Trails and Streams Coalition have been invited and is expected to
attend. The property is 233 acres owned by the Supervisors off
Antioch road just west and north of the town of Haymarket. It is
located just north of the new fire station.

I would encourage NHS members and other equestrians to show up and
introduce yourselves to the Park Authority and Supervisors, showing
them that we are willing to help out with equestrian facilities and
trails at this proposed new park. The property has been in limbo for
three years, and needs some care to bring it into reality as a
publicly accessible park. With the tight economy, the County needs
all the volunteer assistance they can get.

Please make time to attend if you can, and pass the word on to your
equestrian freinds that may not subscribe to our Yahoo email
notifications to members.

If you want more information, please feel free to contact me by email
or phone. My information is on the contact page of the NHS website.

Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg

Hi NHS!

I noticed in the October Newsletter that the NHS scholarship
application process was not continued on page 3. I have included the
entire announcement below and hope to include a completed copy in the
November newsletter as well. Read on and good luck:

The Nokesville Horse Society is proud to announce the second year of
our annual scholarship program. NHS is offering two $500
scholarships for 2009, to be awarded at the end of year Gala in
January.

Eligibility: Entrants must be residents of the Commonwealth of
Virginia and be either NHS members in good standing, or members in
good standing of non-profit organizations having similar aims and
objectives as NHS.

Criterion: Must be members in good standing of 30 years of age or
younger as of January 2009. Application for the scholarship will be a
two to four page written essay submitted to Faye Brewster at email
address fsmileyb@... or mailed to NHS at P.O. Box 132
Nokesville, VA 20182. Essays must be received by November 30, 2008
and will be judged based on spelling, grammar (consideration given to
age of participant), relationship to equines, and how the submission
answers one of the following questions:
„« How has your membership made you a better equestrian?
„« How has being a horse owner/rider enriched your life?
„« How do you believe horses changed your future?

Submission: Provide essay, name, age of applicant, email address
and/or mailing address of applicant or family member of applicant,
and phone number for use in contacting the awardees prior to the end
of year Gala.

Awarding: Each scholarship will be $500 and will be paid in the
calendar year 2009 for educational purposes related to the equestrian
including, but not limited to, equestrian riding, horse camps,
clinics, college courses, and horse farm management. The payment
will be submitted to the educational institution, technical school,
or other qualifying institution upon acceptance of enrollment of the
recipient. If scholarship is not used within 2009, the award will be
revoked and applied to a scholarship award in 2010.

Additional Information: Winners will be expected summarize their
essay at the Gala event in January 2009 to the NHS membership. Essay
can be read, or topic can be spoken to.

Happy Trails,
Scott Helberg

All.

I have a couple mares I am interested in free leasing out. Both
horses have been competitively trail ridden and have placed in the
past. The last couple years they've pretty much been sitting in the
pasture as my daughter is focusing now on Eventing. Both of these
mares are EASY KEEPERS and actually are on diets! One mare, Missy
will be 17 January 1. She is a 15 2" hand Thoroughbred mare. She was
competed by Katherine in pleasure and hunter type classes when
Katherine was younger. Missy has also fox hunted and enjoys it.
2. Bimini is an almost 16 hand Thoroughbred mare. She is 8 years old
and is a big boned mare. She is very bold and will go pretty much
anywhere you point her.
Both horses wear front shoes (Bimini MUST wear front shoes). and if
they will be doing rocky trails they both should have shoes all the
way around. Both are current on all shots, teeth, negative coggins
etc. Both are quiet on trails. Both have been routinely ridden in
English saddles but could carry a western saddle. Both horses are
bright and are used to being well treated. There is no need for
harsh bits or a lot of extra aids. If interested or would like to
hear more please email kaybriggs@... or 703-447-2122.
