Hi NHS!
I received notice from our Conway-Robinson Trail representative that
she had been contacted about an upcoming trail workday. Unfortunately,
we have a couple of conflicts that date in the way of the Gymkhana and
Haymarket Day Parade, but if you are not volunteering or participating
in them, you would be very much welcomed by the Friends of Conway
Robinson and we need to ensure we continue to support them. Conway
Robinson currently provides one of the best public access wooded
equestrian trails in the County. See email below and please contact
james Hannon if you can make it.
Happy Trails,

Hi everyone,
You may have noticed the recent construction activity around the
equestrian ring at James Long Park. The movement of earth has
occured over the past month with an earthen berm constructed to
shield traffic noise from the parking area and an extention of the
grade of the parking lot closer to the arena, allowing for better
seating area at future shows. This is an improvement, although it
may be Spring before the grass grows back in on the newly worked
areas.
Phase two of the construction is about to begin. Culverts have been
purchased to extend the drainage area to the East of the ring from
the road toward the dry pond to the south of the ring. The brush
will be cleared from the drainage area east of the ring and the
ground will be brought up to grade with the parking lot. This will
serve to extend trailer parking to the east for the shows, and will
provide a level grassy area for exercising the horses as well. You
will also see the completion of the extension of the earthen berm,
placing the end closer to forming a barrier to the road from the
arena.
All of this construction will be completed in the next couple of
weeks, well in time for the September 20 Gymkhana. The equestrian
ring will remain open and available for use throughout.
Please email me if you have any questions.
Happy Riding,
Scott Helberg
P.S. If you have not yet checked out the new trails at the back of
the park (behind baseball fields), please do. It is an excellent
short ride in a natural setting.
Does anyone have any photos of the NHS hunter show from July 12 or the
jumper show on the 13th? I have a little extra space for Sept
newsletter and wanted to get some english photos added. I have photos
from the July western show.
Thanks,
Bonnie

I just wanted to post this to the group in case any of y'all would like to
come to the show or enter a few classes. The is a great carriage show
and has
been touted as the largest carriage show in the Southeast. The show is held
at Harmon Field in Tryon, NC. Friday afternoon will be the dressage,
Saturday will be ring classes and cones classes, Sunday will be more
of everything
and breed classes. Too bad we don't have a Gypsy breed class as there were 5
or so Gypsy's there last year. Anyway, the show is September 26-28 and the
judge will be Tom Simmons.

NHS Friends and Members,
You may remember this equine rescue from last winter (details below).
There will be a fundraiser on October 11th at Riverside Equestrian for
the Loudoun County Animal Care and Control & the Equine Rescue League.
These organizations carried the brunt of the financial burden
required to bring these horses back to health and place them in
appropriate homes and some local equestrians decided to do someting to
help them out.
Admission to the fundraiser is free and there will be many venders and
presenters as well as a silent auction, pony rides, and door prizes.
For more information contact Patty Iacone (540) 554-2230.

Rescued Horse Recap
"On January 22, Loudoun County Animal Control Officers seized 48
horses suffering from malnutrition and neglect from a property in
Middleburg. Animal Control Officers had been monitoring the horses'
condition since November, when a citizen complaint alerted them to the
situation. During a routine follow up, Animal Control Officers noticed
a sharp decline in the horses' condition. A veterinarian was called in
to examine the horses and determined that their condition had
deteriorated to a level that warranted their removal from the
property. With the assistance of members of the Loudoun County
Sheriff's Office, the 48 horses were transported to the Animal
Shelter. A hearing was held on January 30, when the Circuit Court
determined that the horses had been cruelly treated, and all 48 were
remanded to the custody of Animal Control.
The horses ranged in age from under one year to senior, and were in
varying states of health and temperament. Some of the horses had
special needs due to their poor condition. The horses required feeding
and watering at least twice a day, and when they were all at the
Shelter, they consumed close to 50 bales of hay per day! They also
produced approximately one ton of manure daily. And, in order to
ensure that the horses had proper shelter, the County constructed run
in sheds to house the horses in inclement weather.
A tremendous and coordinated effort has been required in order to
ensure the proper care of these animals. Animal Care & Control has
received an outpouring of generosity from other County agencies and
the community, including over 40 new volunteers and monetary donations
earmarked specifically toward the care of the horses.
Currently, there are 3 horses still at the Shelter available for
adoption, and one mare and foal in a foster home. Two horses were
euthanized due to health issues. Forty-two horses have been adopted or
placed with equine rescue organizations."

Hi everyone,
Our 3rd and last pleasure show clinic and show is this Saturday at
Nokesville Park on Aden road. I need volunteers to be ribbon
runners and manned the gates.
I also have one more problem, I don't have a concession. I would
like to throw one together and serve something simple like bar-be-
qued pork or hamburgers/hotdogs.
If someone volunteers for this, I will offer free driving lessons or
take someone out of a couple of free trail drives with either our
minis, donkeys or morgan.
Please contact me during the day at 703-789-8167. My home number is
703-753-3291 but don't leave a message since I have 2 sons with
special needs that cannot follow up on giving me the messages.
Thanks so much!!!

Dear All,
IT'S OFFICIAL! The date of the 5th Annual BRHPC Paper Chase has been
set for October 5, 2008 at The Tanyard! This is our biggest activity
of the year and it's the best time of the year for a ride, whether
you select the jumping trail or the non-jumping trail! The best part
of course is the social time afterwards and all the great food is
included as part of the registration fee! If you've participated
before you know we know how to serve a great lunchtime spread!
What is the Paper Chase? Riders go out in teams either of 2 or 3.
They will select either the jumping or nonjumping course. They will
ride the course at their leisure (or appropriate rates of speed for
the team). Once all riders have returned, the times will be added
and averaged and the closest to the middle score WINS!
All are welcome! We have teams of steeple chasers, western riders,
fox hunters, pony clubbers and 4-H riders, parents, children, friends
and neighbors!
Please inform all of your friends and riding neighbors about the
Paper Chase and come on out for a great time!
Unfortunately I don't know how to send an attachment on this site so
if you need a registration form, directions and a waiver just drop me
an email (kaybriggs@...) and I will get the paperwork right
out to you! Complete and mail in the forms early to get the $30.00
registration fee! $40.00 the day of the Paper Chase!
Send the completed registration form, waiver and current negative
coggins to my attention (address is on the registration form I will
send you)!
I look forward to seeing everyone October 5 at THE TANYARD!

Annemarie Roketenetz is a level II certified "Centered Riding" instructor. Her disciplines include Recreational Riding (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced); Western (Equitation, Trail, Pleasure); Hunt Seat (Basic, Flat and Low Fences - Advanced Jumpers); Stock Seat (Advanced); English (Beg - Advanced); Dressage (1st FEI Level); and Therapeutic (Basic).
Centered Riding® is an innovative way of expressing the classical principles of riding, using body awareness, centering, and imagery. Centered Riding® encompasses all seats and styles of riding. It teaches a language that allows clearer communication between horse, rider, and instructor. Centered Riding® was developed by Sally Swift, author of the best-selling book and videotapes, and is now taught by Centered Riding Instructors around the world.
Centered Riding® is based on a knowledge of human and horse anatomy, balance, movement, and on understanding how the mind affects the body and how both affect the horse. It uses centering and grounding techniques from the oriental martial arts, along with body awareness, mental imagery and sports psychology. Through increasing body awareness, inhibiting old patterns, and replacing them with a more balanced, free, and coordinated use of self, both horse and rider can move more freely and comfortably, and develop their best performance.

There is a relatively new motorcycle repair shop on Rt 28 in
Catlett/Midland called Good Fellows. I had an issue with my
motorcycle and decided to call them. They were WONDERFUL!!! The
owner's name is Lee and he worked for Harley in Manassas for 11 years
before opening this shop. He came out and picked up my bike... took
it to the shop and in 3 days called to tell me it was done! That in
itself was a miracle! The last guy that worked on my bike had it for
over 6 months!!!!
If anyone needs any bike repair done... I HIGHLY recommend this
shop. They are just great, great people!! His wife works there
answering the phones, too. Everyone up there was just wonderful to
deal with and they are in business for the customer!! They truly
live up to their name - Good Fellows!!!

Hello NHS,
Don't forget, the second and hopefully final official trail workday
at James Long Park will begin at 9am to 1) perform clean-up work on
some of the trails where specific needs exist, and 2)install trail
marker signs along the trail. Please join us to work the trails, or
bring your horses to ride water to and from those working the trails.
We still need volunteers for both.
For a map of the park, where to meet, and how you can help, please
email scott.helberg@....
Happy Trails,
Scott Helberg

Okay - so sometimes Shutterfly's automatic cropping feature cuts off
important parts of photos - like a horse's head (especially long
photos like the one's of the single Belgium driving a farm wagon). So
I went through and repaired all the bad crops. Here's the photos from
the clinic with horse's heads attached...
