7th Annual "Cabin Fever" Tack Swap is On !!!

Posted by: "Jeff Shoup" jeffshoup@...

Thu Jan 31, 2008 4:00 pm (PST)

Hi Folks,

We have held our Annual Tack Swap at the Manassas Southern States Customer Appreciation Day for the last 6 years. We were afraid we may have to postpone or cancel this year's event due to a remodeling of the store. However, Southern States has informed us that they want to go ahead with this year's Tack Swap. They do not feel the renovations will cause a problem with our event.

So, the 7th Annual NHS "Cabin Fever" Tack Swap will again be held the first Saturday in March, March 1st , at the Manassas Southern States from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Applications for tack swap tables and space are now posted on our website at www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org <http://www.nokesvillehorsesociety.org/> . Once at our site click on the link for "Table Space" in the center of the home page under "Headline News". The cost to rent a table is the same it has been for the last several years, $20 for paid NHS members and $30 for non-members.

More details about specials at the store and other activities for the Customer Appreciation Day will be out within the next week. In the meantime, if you have any questions please feel free to email me at jeffshoup@comcast.net <mailto:jeffshoup@comcast.net> or call 703-402-3726.

Hi guys,

I would like to take my 4-in-hand of miniature horses to Lord Stirling Combined
Driving event on May 2,3,4 in Basking Ridge New Jersey.

If any of you would like to be my navigator/groom or know someon who would, I
would EVER be so grateful.

I would pay for your lodging. I would provide transportation to the event.
Breakfast and dinner would be paid. You would also get a great introduction to
CDE's if you haven't.

I need a person under 200lbs that at least 18. Duties include helping to hitch
up the 4-in-hand. Helping me learn the patterns in the obstacles. Sitting
quietly in the back of my carriage (I've got a seat that bolts in) during
dressage and cones. Helping me balance my carriage during hazards (I would give
you a crash course beforehand) by leaning into the turns. You know - all that
naviagor stuff.

If interested OR IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE that would be interested, please contact
me!

Thanks!

Hi Folks

The Annual NHS “Cabin Fever” Tack Swap has traditionally been on the first Saturday in March for the last several years, and our partner has been the Manassas Southern States.  Southern States would still like to partner with us; however, their store is going to be complete renovates beginning some time around the end of February and continuing into March.  Southern States would like to again partner with us this year, but we need to find an alternate location, such as a school, church or community building, ideally close to the Manassas Southern States area.  If we can find a location in the next few days, relatively close to the Manassas Southern States, the store will once again provide us discounts for purchases at their store the day of the Tack Swap.

Anyone have any ideas????  The ideal location would also be “pet friendly” as we would like to also have our traditional rabies clinic at the event.

Please respond with any ideas or suggestions ASAP to jeffshoup@...

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Folks,

The Northern Virginia Coalition of Equestrian Organizations (NVCEO) was donated oak fence boards and posts.  The NVCEO in turn decided to donate these materials to the NHS to use in replacing missing fencing either at Nokesville Park or James Long Park

NHS Trail Development Director, Cleve Benton has arranged to pick up the material this Saturday morning.  We need some help to load the material on Cleve’s truck.  Currently we have Cleve, Keith Evans and myself and we sure could use several additional strong backs.  The materials are currently at the Manassas Battlefield Park.  If you can help Saturday morning for an hour or two, please contact either Cleve (clevebenton@... – 703-400-8446) or me (jeffshoup@... – 703-402-3726) for more details and location to meet.

Hi everyone,

It’s almost time for our big Awards Banquet/Winter Gala Party, Saturday the 26th.  I thought I would give you some of the final details.

The entrance the Evergreen Fire Hall is located behind the fire station.  There is parking behind the Fire Hall. We are not allowed to park on the sides or front of the fire station.  We have permission to park at the shopping center directly across from the fire station.  There is ample parking in front and behind the stores.  Registration and the social time start at 5:00. When you register, you will be given a ticket for a chance to win one of the many great door prizes. Dinner will be at 6:00.  The awards will start at 7:00.  The winners of the 2007 scholarships will also be announced during the awards program. Music and dancing will begin at 9:00.  Hope everyone brings their dancing shoes.  We are in for a fun night.  If you have any questions, please give me a call.

Sorry there are no additional seats available if you do not have reservations already.

Jeff, I had sent this appeal out to the USTR members.   One of them suggested relaying it to you as well on the chance that you might know of someone in the Warrenton/Nokesville/Manassas area that could help.    We've had a number of positive responses, but the offers to board his horses are coming from farther away and those locations would make it hard for him to get out to see his horses.  Something closer to Warrenton would be the ideal.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Linda Brummund

Dear Friends,

        I NEED YOUR HELP!

My farrier of almost 15 years is in need of finding a place to board two horses.  One is his old show horse gelding and the other is a mare.  He can only pay about $100.00 a month for the two of them.  I know that is not much,  but it is the best he can do.   Back about the end of Sept. 2006, he was out late working a young horse he had just purchased.  His wife had gone to bed and didn't realize he wasn't there until his alarm went off the next morning.  She found him unconscious in the arena with the horse still saddled up standing beside him.  Whether he suffered a stroke or suffered brain damage from the fall, (not wearing a helmet) we will never know because he does not remember.  He spent all of 2007 in a nursing home - still has trouble with his speech and has to walk with a cane or walker.  He just recently was able to move to a small apartment across from the Warrenton Hospital because his wife is divorcing him.  I do not know all the circumstances and it isn't really my business, I just know he was a very good farrier and a good person and someone I considered a good friend.  He has had to sell or is trying to sell his other horses but would very much like to keep his two favorites.  So much in his life has changed.  The second he fell his life as he knew it was over.  He needs to continue with his recovery and I believe that knowing he still has two horses who need him would keep him motivated toward that recovery.  I don't think it matters where your farm is at this point, he just needs help.  I believe this would be at least a year commitment on your part, perhaps two.

So I am asking for your help.  If you had a new years resolution to do more good deeds in 2008 here is your chance. Please spread the word.  Ask everyone you know.  He needs to move his horses soon.

If you can help or know someone who can help you can contact me:  Linda Brummund at 703-754-9478 or by e-mail at brummund@...     My sincere thanks.:

Hey All
I'm sorry, I didn't say where she's missing from. Their place is
about 1/2 way between Red-House and Appomattox. It's on the West
side of 727. Please pass this on to anyone you know, who may have
heard something. I know some of you guys are a ways from here, but
you never know. The word travels fast in the horse community.
There's been some cases of people turning horses loose, due to the hay
situation, and she's afraid someone may assume that this is what
happened with this one. Feel free to call me if you have questions
or info. 434-665-3220
Thank you all for your help. Owen

The Sully Woodlands Project will be the largest project ever created by the Fairfax County Park Authority.  The original meetings for this project over a year ago called for an equestrian center and many miles of horse trails to connect with the Manassas Battlefield and Bull Run Park.  If you live near the area or have an interest in insuring the horse community voice is heard at these meetings please attend.  The voice of the horse community will be competing with all the other organized communities, including soccer, softball, model airplanes, etc.

Hey Everybody!
As some of you may know the Junior Board is doing the picture
slideshow for the Winter Gala, but we are in need of Hunter and Gaited
Show Pictures.
SO if you are an ADULT rider and you have pictures of yourself or
another Adult at the Hunter shows we need those pictures badly!
and if you have Gaited Pictures,
we need those as well, I only have about 20 or so.

So if you can send them to my email that would be fantastic!

Hi Folks,

As the email below tries to emphasize, this is a VERY important meeting regarding public horse trails and facilities in Fauquier County.  To the best of my knowledge, there are zero public horse trails and facilities in Fauquier County.  And there may never be if horse people do not attend this meeting.  We are very fortunate that the Parks Department of Fauquier County has recognized there is an active horse community through the efforts of the NVCEO (Northern VA Coalition of Equestrian Organizations), the Nokesville Horse Society and Trailblazers.  The Fauquier County Parks Department has put this meeting together to gather input from YOU, horse owners of Fauquier County and friends of regional trails and equestrian facilities.  Please attend and share your ideas with the Fauquier Parks Department.

Hello , I am getting ready to put my trailer on consignment at blue
ridge trailer sales but thought maybe I would post it here first in
case anyone was interested in buying it here. It will probably be
marked up more on consignment.
I have a 2001 shoop two horse straight load, with ramp. It is in
excellent condition and ready to go. I believe it to be a quarter
horse size. The largest horse we have hauled in it is a 16.5 hand TB
who wears a size 78 sheet. But I wouldnt put anyone larger than that
in it. It has mangers, with a tack area under each manger. Doors and
windows can be locked with a key. Spare is located on outside of
trailer and battery box is inside away from the elements. There is a
small area in front of the horses where one could change if needbe
but not large enough to consider a dressingroom. It has a center
removable divider and a vent above the horses. I believe its gw to be
2700 but can find out exactly if anyone is interested. It has
current inspection and permanent trailer tags. (will have to find out
if they are transferable). I am asking $3900 but I imagine it will
be higher if I consign it with blueridge to compensate for dealer
comission and other fees. I consider it a very nice trailer and have
gotten a lot of compliments on it.
If interested please email me and I can send you pictures. They were
taken last year after I brought it home to be cleaned and waxed. I am
only selling because I am ready to upgrade to a larger trailer.
Thanks for any interest,
Marji

Hello!
I'm planning on showing a 7 year old QH gelding this year in Western
Pleasure. I'm looking for a trainer who can help me and will travel to
the barn where the horse is located. Please send me details.

Thanks,
Aleasha

I am posting this from another list.....it was under a giveaway forum.

A gentleman has contacted me to help him find homes for his 3 Haflingers. He has a 10 year old mare that will need an intermediate rider. The son is coming 30 months and has been gelded. The filly is about 19 months. The son and daughter are halter broke and stand for farrier. They have not been started under saddle yet.

These 3 Haflingers are located in Nokesville Virginia. The owner's name is Gene Clement. Please contact him if you have any other questions at (571) 259-1361 or by email gene@....

I was thrilled to see the excellent job done in the NHS news letter on the Norwegian Fjord.  Very nice article.  I think you'll see more of these "yellow ponies" as time goes on--from roping to dressage, pleasure driving to CDE, they love to work and excel at their jobs.  If you want one horse that can do it all, check them out!  I did, and only wish I'd found the breed twenty years ago!  Sue Freivald, owned by MVF Venn who does do it all!

Hi everyone,

Congratulations are in order for everyone that represented the Nokesville Horse Society at the Annual Manassas Christmas Parade December 1, 2007.  We won first place in the animal division.  What a great turnout we had - over forty horses and riders plus lots of walkers.

Presentation of the awards by the Manassas City Mayor and Parade Chairman John Martin will be Monday, January 28, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 9027 Center Street, Manassas, VA.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

Thanks for coming.  I had a great time.

Dear NHS friends,
Just a friendly reminder about the NHS meeting tonight at the
Nokesville Firehall, 12826 Marsteller Dr., Nokesville this evening.
The social time begins at 7:00 PM - please bring your favorite dish to
share! The business meeting will commence at 7:30 PM and upon
conclusion, but no later than 8:00 PM, we will begin our program.

We are fortunate enough to have Dr. Melinda Freckleton of Haymarket
Equine Vet Service speaking tonight on "Getting your horse ready for
spring". Dr. Freckleton is a dynamic and exciting speaker so I'm sure
it will be fun! Following her formal presentation, she'll open the
floor for questions. This is your opportunity to ask a vet anything
you'd like about horse care without paying for a barn call!

A couple of public service announcements - if you haven't renewed your
membership for 2008, now's the time! And if you are interested in
volunteering, please let us know!

See you tonight!

Warmest regards,
Bobbi

I have three horses that need good homes:

1)retired TB foxhunter, 22 yrs old, chestnut, very sweet and well-
mannered, but too arthritic to ride. Would make an excellent companion
horse. No vices.

2)proven black bay TB broodmare, 21 yrs old, excellent Bold Ruler
pedigree, retired from track. She is a beautiful mare that has
produced beautiful foals.

3)brown bay Arab mare, 10 yrs old, 14.2 hands, trained to drive.

If you or anyone you know would like any of these three, please let me
know. You can send me an email or call Michelle at (703) 791-5272.

hello,
I am getting ready to have my horses teeth done and had to switch
practitioners due to lack of customer service from the one my barn
uses. Is this fairly common for them not to contact the customer or
return calls? This seems a very poor business practice, although I
understand they may be busy, but there does need to be contact. ( at
least I believe they should be available if they are caring for your
horse. ) I was wondering if anyone out there has used Meridith Barlow
out of mechanicsville? She appears to be fairly new to the practice
(only 2 years) but sounds like a promising prospect. So I was curious
if anyone else has used her and what their experience has been. Or is
there a really good practitioner or dentist you could reccomend?
thanks,
Marji
