Hello Folks

The Nokesville Horse Society Board voted at the October board meeting to ask for a vote from the membership on the proposal to form a Junior Board.
Some of the ideas and purposes of the Junior Board are attached to this email along with a proxy. This will be voted on at the December membership meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting, and would like to vote, you can mail your proxy or have another person bring it to the meeting.

Don't forget, the December meeting is our Annual Holiday Meeting. Be sure to come celebrate and socialize with your fellow NHS members. You are welcome to bring a friend. Remember, everyone is welcome.

Hope to see you there

Hi everyone,

Here is the final information for the Christmas Parade on Saturday.  It sounds like the weather is going to be fine.  We have over 40 horses and riders signed up for the parade. Just a reminder on the parade attire.  The horses will have red blankets (use red felt if you don’t have a red blanket) and decorated with bells, ribbons, hats, red or green leg wraps, painted hooves, etc.  Riders and walkers should wear black pants, and a red or green top.  You can also wear a "Santa" or elf hat or a black helmet or hat. Thanks to Duane Martin and Scott Helberg who volunteered to drive a RTV 900 that Byrd Tractor graciously loaned us to carry containers for the pooper scooper and for handling the pooper scooper duties.  If not for these two volunteering for these positions, we would not be able to attend the parade.  All participants must sign a waiver at the parade and must also be a member of the NHS.  You can join/renew at the parade if you are not a current member.  It is $25 to join and $20 for renew.  There is also a fee of $2.00 per horse to be in the parade.

I have included a map of the shopping center where we will meet.  Staging time is 8:15 – 9:30.  No entry after 9:30 AM.  We are suppose to enter the staging area from Manassas Shopping center or Carriage Lane per the instructions.    Parade starts at 10:00 and we are #14.

As a reminder – We have a lot of horses in the parking lot.  It is unlawful for us to leave horse manure in the parking lot.  Please clean up after your animals.  The pooper scoopers will take care of the manure along the parade route only.

If anyone has any muck buckets we could borrow for the parade, please let me know.  We will return them at the end of the parade.

Please contact me at patriciapumphrey@... or my home number - 540 364-4845, day of parade cell 703 919-6958 if you have additional questions.

Thanks,

Pat Pumphrey

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your suggestions and feedback on Horse of the Month column
(from about a month ago!). My apologies, also, that I didn't get my
little notes listed on all of the NHS-related Yahoo groups. My
computer was down for a while and I haven't had much time lately to
sit down and organize things. I had asked for any other Horse of the
Months to be emailed to me, and also if anyone wanted to reply with
what breeds of horses they have. It was Bobbi's idea (our new
president!) to feature a new member breed each month. I had 1 reply
for Horse of the Month and 1 reply for horse breeds, so if anyone else
wants to contribute, please drop me a line. Email is
nhs_editor@....

Thanks so much for your input each month! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Folks

Eleanor Weck of the Great Falls Trail Blazers wants to know if area equestrians need a trail connection between Difficult Run Trail and the Potomac River. This trail is now washed out. She will apply for a grant if there is sufficient interest. Please let her know by email if you think this trail connection is important!

I have already contacted her. There definitely is a need because the trail is washed out and only small, very bold horses can do it now. She needs lots of responses because she needs to go to the Park Service with a feeling that there are a lot of people interested in this and they should spend the money (over $100,000.) Also it means that we can ride the Cross County Trail which goes all the way to Lorton to the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail which you can take through Algonkian Park in Loudoun County. Please respond.

Hello Folks

We only have a few essays submitted for the two $500.00 NHS scholarships. If you are interested in riding lessons, equine camps, equine college courses, clinics, etc. I would like to encourage you to consider taking the time to submit your essay. It is a great opportunity for two NHS members.

President/NHS

NHS Scholarship Fund:

The Nokesville Horse Society is proud to announce the commencement of our annual scholarship program.  This year NHS has decided to offer 2 scholarships to our members.  The scholarships are in the amount of $500 each.  These scholarships can be used for any horse/agriculture oriented instruction.  (riding lessons, camps, college courses, clinics, etc.)

The scholarships will be awarded based on an essay contest (there are no restrictions on the essay – we just want to hear what you have to say and why you should receive one of the scholarships).  So, please email your essay to either thaugan@...  or m.robertie@....  All essays must be received by November 30th, 2007.  There will be a committee formed to review the essays and the winners will be announced at the Gala on January 26th.

Hi everyone,

The parade is on and we have been accepted.  We have a volunteer to drive an ATV with cart for the pooper scooper and also a volunteer pooper scooper (more than one scooper would be helpful).  Looks like we are going to have a great turnout.  If you have not emailed me yet to let me know you will be participating, please do so.  We need to get a list together.  We will be in position 14 this year so if you need to be somewhere else that day, you will have time to get there.  As a reminder -The horses will have red blankets (use red felt if you don’t have a red blanket) and decorated with bells, ribbons, hats, red or green leg wraps, painted hooves, etc.  Riders and walkers should wear black pants, and a red or green top (heavy sweatshirts are fine).  You can wear Santa hats or a black hat also.  We will help anyone that needs it get their horse ready.

Below is the information provided by the Manassas Parade Committee.  If you need additional information, please email or call me.

I know this is a little unorthodox but I have half of a 330 ml bottle of Ventipulmin Syrup and no longer need it.  It expires 1/09.  It is the real thing and I would like to sell what's remaining.

The bottle goes for $180 - $240.

I'de like $75 for the 1/2 bottle I have left if anyone is interested.

Larry,

I am Ed Dandar, a member of the NHS, and I have been working with Keith Evans on the Valley View Trail this past spring/summer and with another group to improve expanding multi-use (horse) trails in PWC.

There is an important working group session this coming Saturday on County trail development sponsored by the Park Authority and we need to have as many NHS members there as possible if we are to have our voices heard.

Below is the message of WHO, What, Where, When, and Why,I need you to get out to our NHS folks for this meeting.

Appreciate your support in this effort.

Thanks,

I will also be speaking briefly about the Chesapeake Bay-Friendly Horse Farm Project.  The $250,000 project will create two model horse farms in PWC.  We are currently seeking 2 horse farms to work with that are struggling with pasture, mud and manure management and protection of waterways.  Applicants must be willing to accept help and change their management to incorporate new practices.  We will be working with a team of horse owners, engineers, and conservationists to develop innovative and effective practices to address these concerns on a site-specific basis.  All structural elements and pasture renovation costs will be covered by the grant funds.  This is a 2-year project.  The District must locate the two horse farms and begin work by January 2008.

This project is a unique and separate opportunity-- not the same as financial incentives we have offered from the State in the past.

Christmas Parade

It is time again to plan for the Annual Greater Manassas Christmas Parade which is Saturday December 1, 2007.  I have turned in our application and am waiting for confirmation of the acceptance.  We have had a great turnout and a lot of fun in the past years participating in this event. I expect the same for this year.  Last year we won first place under equestrian entries.  The competition was tough.   The theme for this year’s parade is A Tropical Christmas”.  Our sub-theme is “Horses ready for Christmas”.  The horses will have red blankets (use red felt if you don’t have a red blanket) and decorated with bells, ribbons, hats, red or green leg wraps, painted hooves, etc.  Riders and walkers should wear black pants, and a red or green top.  We will need walkers to carry the Nokesville banner and help the riders.  We must have a volunteer with an ATV, tractor, cart or some way to carry containers for another most important requirement – the pooper scooper (great way for to earn a few dollars.  We will ask for a donation of $2.00 per horse for the services of the pooper scooper).  Without volunteers for these positions, we will not be able to attend the parade.  All participants must sign a waiver at the parade and must also be a member of the NHS.

I have included the official list of rules for the parade for your review below.   Please contact me at patriciapumphrey@... or my home number - 540 364-4845 if you plan on participating or have additional questions.

Thanks,

Pat Pumphrey

Please read carefully as the rules and regulations have changed.

1. The Christmas Parade Committee has the right to establish the Parade theme, determine the number of entries, select and reject participants at its sole discretion, and control Parade operations on the day of the event. All participants must be approved in advance by the Parade Committee.

2. All entries must represent an organized and recognized community, neighborhood or other non-profit group. Each Parade group/unit must be properly identified by a sign or banner carried by a walker or mounted on the front of the unit. Commercial establishments or groups/individuals that represent commercial establishments are not allowed in the Parade except in their capacity as a Parade sponsor.

3. Parade entries must be costumed/designed appropriate to the theme of the Parade. All participants in a group/unit must contribute to the theme.

4. All group/unit entries, e.g. bands, scout troops, etc. must be uniformly dressed to participate in the
Parade.

5. Parade participants may not sell, or offer for sale, any commodity, service, food or drink on the day of the Parade.

6. For safety reasons, Parade participants may not throw any item toward spectators including, but not limited to, candy, flowers, leaflets or promotional items.

7. Vehicles that are not an integral part of carrying out a group’s Parade theme may not accompany the group/unit along the Parade route. Adults carrying coats or other items for participants must walk behind spectators along the route.

8. For safety reasons, children under the age of 8 shall not walk in the Parade. They are invited to ride on floats or other vehicles that are integral to carrying out a group’s Parade theme.

9. Performance and time restraints: ** IMPORTANT: This section only applies if you checked on the application that your group/unit will be performing for the Judges.

10. The Official Parade Santa Claus is the only Santa allowed in the Parade.

I am writing to let everyone know the GEHS (Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society) is having an open meeting on Saturday, November 17.  There will be a potluck dinner at 6:30 pm and the meeting after at 7:30 pm. It will be held in the Pavilion at Artillery Ridge Campground [610 Taneytown Rd, Getysburg, PA 17325].

The purpose of the meeting is to re-energize the club and build up membership. We have had a drop off in activity and need ideas. Our work parties used to turn out more than a dozen people and we had a great time together while getting lots of work done. The GEHS is the primary caretaker of the Gettysburg National Military Park horse trails and it would be a huge shame if the trails had to close due to lack of funding and manpower.

So mark your calendars and come join us for some food and conversation!
We are a fun group of people in need of some fresh ideas.

Hi Folks,

It is only a few days until the NHS Crystal Crown Judged Trail Ride, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4.

If you have already reply to our request simply disregard this message.  If you have not replied yet, we still need commitment from a few more volunteers.  The weather is supposed to be perfect.  A little crisp in the morning followed by a perfect fall day.  The leaves at Sky Meadows are predicted to be in full color this weekend.  There will be nearly 125 horses there.  What more could you ask for?

We need 2 more judging assistants and 1 more person to help with parking.  No experience is needed.  Training will be provided.

Contact Marlys Shoup at MarlysShoup@... or call 703-754-4981 and leave a message.
