It is only a few days until the NHS Crystal
Crown Judged Trail Ride, scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 4.
If you have already reply to our request
simply disregard this message. If you have not replied yet, we still need
commitment from a few more volunteers. The weather is supposed to be
perfect. A little crisp in the morning followed by a perfect fall
day. The leaves at Sky Meadows are predicted to be in full color this
weekend. There will be nearly 125 horses there. What more could you
ask for?
We need 2 more judging assistants and 1
more person to help with parking. No experience is needed. Training
will be provided.

I am writing to let everyone know the GEHS (Gettysburg Equestrian Historical Society) is having an open meeting on Saturday, November 17. There will be a potluck dinner at 6:30 pm and the meeting after at 7:30 pm. It will be held in the Pavilion at Artillery Ridge Campground [610 Taneytown Rd, Getysburg, PA 17325].
The purpose of the meeting is to re-energize the club and build up membership. We have had a drop off in activity and need ideas. Our work parties used to turn out more than a dozen people and we had a great time together while getting lots of work done. The GEHS is the primary caretaker of the Gettysburg National Military Park horse trails and it would be a huge shame if the trails had to close due to lack of funding and manpower.
So mark your calendars and come join us for some food and conversation! We are a fun group of people in need of some fresh ideas.
Please RSVP to Terry Latschar by Oct. 31, 2007 at terrylatscher@..., 717-334-5100 [home], or 717-360-3675 [cell].
If you are riding in the NHS Crystal Crown
Judged Trail Ride, you ride time has been posted. Go to www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org
and click on “Ride Times” in the middle of the page.
If you are not riding in the event, we
still need volunteers. Email Marlys Shoup at MarlysShoup@... or call
703-754-4981 and leave a message. No experience is necessary. You will be
given training on the spot.
Here are a few pictures from the October Western Show. If you would like me to send you a picture file, let me know. Hope everyone enjoyed themselves this year. Thanks for coming.

I have 2 Bucas Smartex 3 Season Blankets. Size 69" and 75" I hate to part with them but they are now spares and too nice and too expensive to sit gathering dust. Professionally cleaned so no worries about being waterproof - they are. Comparable to Rambos - 1000 denier ballistic nylon outer shell, made in Ireland, BUT has a moisture wicking lining so you can blanket your WET horse. I also have an unused 75" Bucas Shamrock Power Sheet $70.
The Humane society is asking folks to call in tomorrow, 10/16 to support the anti horse-slaughter legislation.
The have kindly provided me, the contact info for my congressman and my senators:
1. Your U.S. Representative, Frank Wolf and your two U.S. Senators, John Warner and Jim Webb, have not co-sponsored a ban on horse slaughter. Please call Rep. Wolf at (202) 225-5136, Sen. Warner at (202) 224-2023 and Sen. Webb at (202) 224-4024 and urge them to co-sponsor H.R. 503/S. 311.
If you live in VA your senators will be the same but not necessarily your congressman.
While I will not reveal or impose my opinion in this matter unto you; I urge you to do your homework on this legislation. Don't blindly push buttons and make phone calls on behalf of the Humane Society or any other organization. The decision is
yours, make sure you know what you are asking your representatives to do. After you have done your homework let your senators and congressman know how you feel about the ban on horse slaughter.
I do not know if anyone would be interested . I have horse magazines I
am about to throw away from 2005-present . Equus, Horse Illustrated ,
Horse and Rider , Western Horseman ,Hunter and Sport horse . If anyone
would like them, or know a place I could donate them too , please
contact me through email or phone. Thanks TRACEY 703-606-4122
The decision has been made to change the Western Schooling Show from Saturday, October 27, 2007 to Sunday, October 28, 2007 due to rain. The rain is suppose to stop early tomorrow and that should give the ring time to drain. I have also requested the Park Authority drag the ring for us tomorrow. Hope to see you all Sunday since that will be the last show of the year. Registration will begin at 8:00 and the show will start at 9:00.

Living with O.C.E.A.N. Syndrome - By Scooter Grubb
Just recently, after years of research, I have finally been able to give a name to what my wife and I have been living with for years. It's an affliction, for sure, which when undiagnosed and misunderstood can devastate and literally tear a family apart. Very little is known about O.C.E.A.N. Syndrome. But it is my hope this article will generate interest from researchers involved in the equine and psychological sciences. You will, no doubt, begin to identify similar symptoms in your own family and hopefully now be able to cope. Obsessive Compulsive Equine Attachment Neurosis Syndrome (O.C.E.A.N.S) is usually found in the female and can manifest itself anytime from birth to the golden years. Symptoms may appear any time and may even go dormant in the late teens, but the syndrome frequently re-emerges in later years.
Symptoms vary widely in both number and degree of severity. Allow me to share some examples which are most prominent in our home.
The afflicted individual:
1. Can smell moldy hay at ten paces, but can't tell whether milk has gone bad until it turns chunky.
2. Finds the occasional "Buck and Toot" session hugely entertaining, but severely chastises her husband for similar antics.
3. Will spend hours cleaning and conditioning her tack, but wants to eat on paper plates so there are no dishes.
4. Considers equine gaseous excretions a fragrance.
5. Enjoys mucking out four stalls twice a day, but insists on having a housekeeper mop the kitchen floor once a week.
6. Will spend an hour combing and trimming an equine mane, but wears a baseball cap so she doesn't waste time brushing her own hair.
7. Will dig through manure piles daily looking for worms, but does not fish.
8. Will not hesitate to administer a rectal exam up to her shoulder, but finds cleaning out the Thanksgiving turkey cavity for dressing quite repulsive.
9. By memory can mix eight different supplements in the correct proportions, but can't make macaroni and cheese that isn't soupy.
10. Twice a week will spend an hour scrubbing algae from the water tanks, but has a problem cleaning lasagna out of the casserole dish.
11. Will pick a horse's nose, and call it cleaning, but becomes verbally violent when her husband picks his.
12. Can sit through a four-hour session of a ground work clinic, but unable to make it through a half-hour episode of Cops.
The spouse of an afflicted victim:
1. Must come to terms with the fact there is no cure, and only slightly effective treatments. The syndrome may be genetic or caused by the inhaling of manure particles which, I propose, have an adverse effect on female hormones.
2. Must adjust the family budget to include equine items - hay, veterinarian services, farrier services, riding boots and clothes, supplements, tack, equine masseuse and acupuncturist - as well as the mandatory) equine spiritual guide, etc. Once you have identified a monthly figure, never look at it again. Doing so will cause tightness in your chest, nausea and occasional diarrhea.
3. Must realize that your spouse has no control over this affliction. More often than not, she will deny a problem even exists as denial is common.
4. Must form a support group. You need to know you're not alone - and there's no shame in admitting your wife has a problem. My support group, for instance, involves men who truly enjoy Harley Davidsons, four-day weekends and lots of scotch. Most times, she is unaware that I am even gone, until the precise moment she needs help getting a 50- pound bag of grain out of the truck.
Now you can better see how O.C.E.A.N.S. affects countless households in this country and abroad. It knows no racial, ethnic or religious boundaries. It is a syndrome that will be difficult to treat because those most affected are in denial and therefore, not interested in a cure. So, I am taking it upon myself to be constantly diligent in my research in order to pass along information to make it easier for caretakers to cope on a day to day basis.
I just got these off my camera and uploaded them to my webshots album They are the speed events. If you want me to send them to you, just email me directly.

Do you have any way of
getting the word out to the local 4-H groups that Breyer is looking for
volunteers to help with the horse painting in Champion Saddlery's booth?
See below.
I will be providing the FREE Breyer
Horse Painting at the Champion Saddlery Booth as we have in the past. As
we have done in the past, I need to request 4H volunteers to help.
I really can't use more than 2

6:16 PM Subject: Last Call for Parks,
Trails and Open Space!
Parks, Trails & Open Space Board of
Supervisors Vote
The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the Parks and Open Space
Comprehensive Plan Amendment on Tuesday, October 16, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoartGovernmentCenter.
Full information is posted online at pwconserve.org.
Parks and protected open space are smart investments that increase
property values, create stable neighborhoods and produce economic
opportunities.
In order to attract quality economic investments, PrinceWilliamCounty must have
the capacity to compete successfully with surrounding jurisdictions.
Parks and open space play a key role in ensuring the high quality of life
we need to accomplish this goal.
FairfaxCounty's
proximity to Washington,
D.C., is a clear advantage
over Prince William. In addition, the Fairfax County Park Authority has
already secured nearly 25 parkland acres/1,000 residents. StaffordCounty, competing with Prince
William for economic investments through Base Realignment and Closure
opportunities, has established a standard of 20 parkland acres/1,000
residents.
The PWC Planning Commission and the PWC Park Authority Board have both
recommended a standard of 25 parkland acres/1,000 residents.
Nevertheless, PWC's Planning staff is recommending the low standard of 15
parkland acres/1,000 residents based on their concern that the County
cannot afford a higher standard...despite the fact that it is a 30
year plan in which costs are not usually considered.
Before Supervisors accept this short-sighted approach, the benefits of high
standards should be considered. Supervisors who are concerned that the
County's budget cannot support adequate standards for park and open space
should also be voting to approve:
Proposed
proffer increases, scheduled for a Board vote on Tuesday, October
16, just before the Board vote for Parks and Open Space;
The Bull Run
Mountain Conservancy's (BRMC) proposal to double the acreage at
Silver Lake and manage the site for public uses at no expense to
taxpayers, which would allow the PWC Park Authority to use the
Dominion Valley proffered contributions for other needed parkland
improvements (such as the construction of equestrian facilities on
the 20+ acres excluded from the BRMC proposal at Silver Lake).
Full public
access for passive recreation to properties currently owned by the
Board of Supervisors, such as the Dove's Landing property, and the
placement of a conservation easement to ensure the property remains
undeveloped.
Parks and open space might be expensive, but the
consequences of doing nothing are significantly higher.
According to the 2007 Virginia Outdoors Plan:
Small company
owners say recreation, parks and open space are the highest priority
in choosing a new location for their business.
Corporate CEOs
report that employee quality of life is the third most important
factor in locating a new business.
According to a 2002 survey conducted by the
National Association of Home Builders and the National Association of
Realtors a majority of consumers want:
A
single-family detached home in a pedestrian-friendly community;
Shopping
within walking distance;
A mix of open
space, including parks, recreational facilities, playgrounds,
farms, nature preserves and undeveloped areas.
According to the Lincoln Institute of Land
Policy, "a number of empirical studies have shown that proximity to
preserved open space enhances property values, particularly if the open
space is not intensively developed for recreation purposes…"
Parks and protected open space are smart investments that increase
property values, create stable neighborhoods, provide out children with
the possibility of a well-rounded, healthy childhood, and produce
economic opportunities.
In order to successfully attract economic investments, PrinceWilliamCounty needs a
Comprehensive Plan that:
Sets high
standards;
Establishes a
comprehensive and coordinated approach;
Encourages
partnerships;
Takes
advantage of existing opportunities.
Moves Prince
William County toward the high-quality lifestyle our residents
desire.
If we are not willing to invest in ourselves,
why should others care?

Attend the Public Hearing for Parks and Open Space on Tuesday, October
16, 7:30 p.m. at the McCoartGovernmentCenter, Board Chambers, directions.
Subject: Parks, Open Space and Trails Public Hearing
Hello All,
We are coming down to the wire in our efforts to improve the Parks, Open Space and Trails Chapter of the County Comprehensive Plan. This extremely important document sets the stage for future growth in parks and recreational facilities as well as for preservation of open space and creation of a public trail system.
The final public hearing for the Parks, Open Space, and Trails Plan is Tuesday, October 16, 7:30 PM in the board room of the McCoart Building which is located on the Prince William Parkway just south of the intersection with Hoadly Road.
Here's the history: After Planning Staff failed twice to produce an acceptable update to the Park Chapter of the Comprehensive Plan, a group of citizens proposed a draft of their own. Now, Planning Staff is attempting to cut it back so that it resembles their previous document. The Planning Commission approved a version containing a higher standard for parks and trails, but the planning staff is recommending a lower standard for adoption by the Board. We need people to come and speak at the hearing for the higher standards.
Talking points include:
1. The county needs to set a goal for park land of 25 acres per 1,000 persons. (This is what Fairfax residents already enjoy and they continue to ask deveopers for proffers of 18.8 acres per 1,000 persons. Prince William presently has 10.5 acres per 1,000 persons and asks developers for 13.8 acres per 1,000 persons)
2. Do not allow land and recreational facilities that are not available to the public (such as private clubs and HOA lands) to be counted as parks.
3. Do not allow unprotected open space (space that could be developed) to count towards open space inventories.
4. Support a comprehensive network of public trails with a standard of 1 mile per 500 persons. Do not accept the lower standard of 1 mile per 1,500 persons.
Point Number one is extremely important and will most likely be hotly contested by the development community even though it is clear that the current park deficit cannot be recitifed solely by developer proffers. If we want a higher standard for parks, we will have to make sure the Board of Supervisors knows that we think it is very important and that we are willing to pay for them. If you would be willing to pay a special tax if you knew it would go towards park land or trails, this would be a good time to speak out.
The Prince William Conservation Alliance has much more information about the plan. You can check this out at www.pwconserve.org
Rumor has it that we do not have enough votes on the Board at present to pass the higher park standards. Please come and speak up for parks Tuesday, OCtober 16, 7:30 PM at the McCoart building.
Wednesday will be our NVCEO Networking
Meeting. We have a very exciting topic and dynamic speaker
scheduled. Dr. Shea Porr, DVM,
Virginia Tech’s Equine Extension Agent for our region will be presenting
a discussion of the formation of the Virginia State Animal Response Team
(VASART).
“Any Disaster – Any Animal
– Any Time” is the motto of the Virginia State Animal Response
Team, whose mission is to provide prevention, preparedness, response, and
recovery for emergencies affecting animals. VASART was created through a
private-public partnership to serve as a unifying network of organizations,
businesses, federal and state government agencies, and individuals that
supports the prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery for emergencies affecting
animals. Because disaster response needs to happen at a local level, VASART
will build County Animal Response Teams (CARTs) across the state. County
coordinators will be selected to lead the development of county teams
consisting of volunteers who will respond to emergencies at the local level.
Join your CART, or if one is not created yet, help us get a CART started in
your county.
The goals of VASART include:
• To facilitate a rapid,
coordinated, and effective response to any emergency affecting animals;
• To decrease the health and safety
threat to humans and animals;
• To minimize the economic impact of
emergencies affecting animals; and
• To prevent/decrease the spread of
disease during emergencies affecting animals.
During our August 2006 NVCEO Networking
meeting, Bonnie Clark, State Animal Response Team Director in Louisiana during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
presented to us “Lessons Learned During Hurricane Katrina”. A
lesson learned by us from her presentation was that the NVCEO should take a
lead role in emergency preparedness for our region. We are looking
forward to Dr. Porr’s presentation of the formation of VASART and how you
can be better prepared for “Any Disaster – Any Animal – Any
Time”.
October’s NVCEO Networking Opportunity
will also be a chance for you to gather around with other leaders from the
horse community to share ideas and swap stories. The meeting will be held
at the:
Sully District Office of the FairfaxCounty Government
4900 Stonecroft Boulevard
Chantilly
You can find mapquest directions on our
website at www.NVCEO.org
Networking will begin at 7pm and the meeting will begin at
7:30. The NVCEO will be providing refreshments. Please bring your
appetite. This event is open to the public. Anyone who is a member
of any of the NVCEO organizations is welcome to attend for free.
Individuals who do not belong to one of the NVCEO member organizations are
asked to provide a nominal donation of $5 to help cover the cost of
refreshments.

(horse was stolen from Union Ridge, Centreville, VA, and then sold to an unknown person.)
My horse Sammy was stolen and sold during the first week of August while I was stationed in Baghdad for 5 weeks. The police have been unable to obtain the location of the horse. Sammy is a 7 yo, 15.3 bay TB gelding with 2 rear white half pasterns and a white front right cornet. He also has a star and a snip. Please e-mail me for more details. He was sold to some unsuspecting buyer during the fir st week of August. Apparently he was sold for $700. Sammy is permanently identified with an Avid microchip and registered with the Avid HorseTrac Database. I have helped you by fighting the war on terrorism and attempting to keep our country safe and was taken advantage of while doing so . . . I hope you will help me find Sammy. If you have any information regarding Sammy please contact me at 703-909-9164 or by email.
