Just FYI, I listened to the hearing and the mark-up, and the committee voted to report the anti-horse slaughter bill out of committee unfavorably -- and I think unanimously -- which means it will go to the floor for a vote but without the support of the committee. There were a number of amendments added, which I didn't follow completely, but which included one to establish horse sanctuaries in Kentucky and New York as a pilot program to deal with the increase in unwanted and/or abandoned horses that might otherwise have gone to slaughter. The rep from Kentucky was not
amused. All the witnesses were overwhelmingly critical of the bill for failing to address the issue of what to do with unwanted horses. They said only one person supporting the bill agreed to appear and then backed out.

This Bill is bad for Horse Welfa ----- Original Message ----- From: MFHA To: piperreed@... Sent: Monday, July 24, 2006 6:18 PM Subject: MFHA - H.R. 503 - Please Read
This Bill is bad for Horse Welfare, We all love our horses, but this isn't about your trusty hunter, it's about horses nobody wants, many of which are not rideable for various reasons. It may make you feel better to ban slaughter
but is it what is best for them?
H.R 503, the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, can actually do more harm that good for horses.
a.. The American Equine Veterinarian Association says this is bad for horse welfare. b.. 61 other groups concerned about horses are AGAINST this bill; c.. The ban will devastate the US horse market: Each horse's value will decrease by $300 to $400, or about $29 million in losses for US horse owners; d.. 70,000+ additional unwanted horses each year will flood inadequate, overburdened, unregulated patchwork of rescue and adoption facilities; e.. These extra horses will be competing for adoption with the 32,000 wild horses that US taxpayers are already paying $40 million to shelter and feed; f.. There will be an increased in abandoned and neglected horses because owners who can no longer afford the $2,000+ each year in care and who can't sell or give away their
horses or find them a home, are left with no other option. A Hearing on Capitol Hill is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25.
In preparation for this Hearing on H.R. 503, we are reaching out to the Horse Welfare Organizations like yours to see if you have any questions or need any support in getting this information out to your membership.
Go to the National Animal Interest Alliance (NAIA) website http://capwiz.com/naiatrust/home/ it will easily take you by the numbers to contact your congressman.
1.. Do you have a membership list that you are willing to contact to urge them to call their Members of Congress? 2.. Do you have any contacts w/the Member's district office, or DC office, or do you know the Member directly? 3.. Do you have any contacts/friends in the local media that might write about how horse processing helps horse welfare, and a ban would do more harm than good? If you love horses and want to protect
them from the consequences of bad legislations, please work with us to vote "no" to the emotional rhetoric..
VOTE "NO" ON H.R. 503

This is just a reminder that Wednesday, July 26th is the last day to register for the 7th Southeastern Equestrian Trails Conference (SETC) to be held this year in Roanoke, VA on August 3-5, 2006.
The conference will address Working Together for Trails in a Changing Environment. SETC has historically focused on the importance of everyone coming to the table together to plan, build, and maintain trails. As important as the networking with other equestrians is to the conference, it is the opportunity to interact directly with staff from the
(Virginia) State Parks, National Forest Service, National Park Service, the Army Corp of Engineers, the Federal Highway Administration, landscape architects, county planners, county and city parks and recreation staff, that makes this conference so important to the future of trails in Virginia and the other SETC states.
Nearly 170 individuals from 18 states have already registered. While nearly half are from Virginia, others come from states as far away as Idaho, New Hampshire, and Florida and will bring with them a wide range of experiences and ideas to share about trails and land resource issues.
Additionally, there will be over 30 exhibitors who will have information about their organizations and businesses that relate to trails and trailriding.
For more information regarding the agenda and exhibitors, or to register, visit the SETC website at www.SoutheasternEquestrianTrails.com.

They all need to find a place to call home soon.. thanks so much Rene' Brown, International Coordinator :-) ******************** Rebecca from Germany, she is 15 years old. My favorite hobby is horseback riding and spending time with horses and other pets. I have gone riding for 3 years in 3
different clubs, but now I think I have found the right one. I take lessons by my riding teacher normally once a week, and I would be glad if my Host family had horses or other pets.
Ragni from Germany, she is 16 years old. At the age of 3 years, I began horse vaulting and I did it 9 years, too, training 2-3 times a week. Besides I've taught vaulting and helped in the stable. I like horses and many times spent my holidays on a riding-farm. For four years, I was a member of our local branch of scouts: my elder sister was a leading member there too. There we had to work together, to accept and respect each other: a very good experience I would like to recommend to everybody. I just like it to pass on the things I've learned just to see if others enjoy them or profit from them, too.
Rowena from Germany, she is 16 years old I go at least two times to my riding club. Since seven years I ride regularly and it's even more than an important hobby. I'm
very sad, that I have to leave my horse back home. Therefore it wouldn't be that bad, if I would come into a family that has got animals. By the way: My love to animals is the reason why I stopped eating meat. I hope it is possible for you to accept this, because I'm really convinced about that.
Sofia from Germany, she is 16 years old. What I find a bit sadly, is that I have to leave my horse. Actually it isn't my horse. I'm allowed to ride the horse two or three times a week. Of course I have to do many other things like cleaning the paddock. I do not going to jousts because this is not important for me. Well maybe I'm not good enough, but I'm happy if I can ride my horse. Therefore I take a few hours at the riding teacher and then I just ride for my own. This is one of the things I will miss the most.
Has anyone used a Corrector Pad (by Len Brown)? Of course, the website is full
of great
testimonials, but I wanted to hear of any real-live, close-by experiences, esp.
if it's worth the
price. The problem I'm trying to correct is large dry spots on either side of
the withers.
Please emal me. Thanks for any info you can give!
We are moving to southern Spotsylvania county next month,
near LakeAnnaState Park and may not be able to
commute back up to NorthernVA for lessons. Does anyone have
any recommendations for instructors down there?

Hi-
Our Gypsy Vanner mare, Clononeen Kerin delivered a big, healthy colt this
morning at 12:13 AM. Since the pregnancy was a surprise we discovered during
her quarantine, we don't know who the stud was. However, we do know he was a
Gypsy Horse as Alaria Moss Odyssey, Barn name: Dess is definitely a black and
white Vanner with one blue eye and one brown eye.
Here are the latest photos taken this morning.

Randy Abernathy, an East Coast horse Clinician, is scheduled to come to Laytonsville Maryland on September 1-3 for a three day clinic. This is a great opportunity to work hands on with a small group and Randy. Some of you may have had a chance to see him at the Chantilly Horse Expo back in March. You will be in the ring with Randy and your horse for three days working on areas such as safety, problems, ground control, one rein stops, disengaging the hindquarters, riding, moving the hip and moving the shoulders. This is like getting the chance to be in the ring and work with a trainer like John Lyons or Clinton Anderson. It is a great opportunity to work with a trainer of this caliber and have the chance to ask questions and get immediate feedback while you are learning. You will take away information that is immediately applicable and will last you a lifetime. Randy really
does amazing work and can teach you how easy it is. The fee for working with Randy is $500.00 for the three days. Only 4 slots are available, as Randy works with small groups. The fee for auditing the three days is $25.00 or $10.00 per day. Frank Crandall and I spoke briefly at the last EQAC meeting about the proposed resolution (See forward below) by one MCA member and I told him I would forward it to you for your thoughts.? It certainly does not seem to reflect the Great Falls position in anyway and does not appear to be what we supported in our letter to the GFNP when they were soliciting comments.? Frank was kind enough to want to chat with us before moving forward with an MCA position.
Perhaps you can help Frank with the GFCA position on this as this is really in our "territory".
Thanks .....Stella

=================================== Stella,
Pasted below Is a very tentative resolution
that one of our committee members put together.? It received some discussion but no action at that time.? First, the committee felt that to some extent we would be encroaching on GFCA territory.? Second, we felt that more info from the NPS would be needed in order to do an appropriate job on it.? You and others in GFCA will no doubt note that the proposer seems somewhat less than enthusiastic about equestrian uses.? This feeling, I might note, was not necessarily widely in evidence among our committee members.? I would appreciate it if some of your colleagues and confreres could critique this and tell us if you think there might be some common ground here or a desirability to work up a joint resolution of some kind. McLean Citizens Association Draft Proposed Resolution Regarding Great Falls Park
? October 19, 2005
Whereas, the National Park Service has issued a draft General Management Plan and
Environmental Impact Statement (GMP/EIS) establishing a proposed plan for managing Great Falls Park, Virginia over the next 10 to 15 years, and has invited public comments regarding the proposed GMP/EIS; and
Whereas, as the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area has expanded to Great Falls and beyond, the use of Great Falls Park by pedestrians, joggers, bird watchers, and cross-country skiers has expanded dramatically, while the relative use of the Park by equestrians has proportionately declined; and
Whereas, in developing the final GMP/EIS, the National Park Service should consider the interests and the uses of Great Falls Park by visitors to the park and, in particular, should consider the environmental implications for the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay of these uses of Great Falls Park; and
Whereas, the streams in Great Falls Park flow directly into the Potomac River and thence into the Chesapeake Bay; and
Whereas, the deposits of horse
manure on the hiking trails in Great Falls Park interferes with the enjoyment of the park by all other visitors; and
Whereas, manure run-off from horses contributes to higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorous in the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay; and
Whereas, higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorous can cause eutrophication, which is the process of nutrient enrichment of water that promotes a proliferation of plant life, especially algae, which in turn reduces the dissolved oxygen content and often causes the eradication of animal life; and
Whereas, eutrophication is a serious concern for the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay, creating ecological threats to the ongoing recreational, commercial and other uses of the River and the Bay; and
Whereas, the Difficult Run Trail, the Matildaville Trail, and the Mine Run Trail in Great Falls Park are adjacent to, or intersect with streams and runs that directly empty into the Potomac River;
and

I agree. Then we should ban all those deer and spotted owls that poop on the trails and cause it to run into the river. Then we should ban all the fish that are actually pooping right there IN the river. Didn't
Congress just pass an act that said horse traffic couldn't be banned from public land? --B

*************************************** Fairfax4Horses is hosting a benefit horse show on Sunday, August 13, at Nokesville Park in Nokesville, Virginia.
The proceeds from the entry fees will help support our goal of establishing an equestrian facility at Laurel Hill Park. Nokesville Park is located off of Route 28 a few miles south of Manassas.
We are seeking volunteers who can assist us at the show--people to help set up jumps, sign people in for classes, check Coggins papers, help with scoring, and open/close the ring gate. For most of the jobs, you don't need experience, just energy and a desire to support Fairfax4Horses.
You can join us for the entire show, or for either a morning or afternoon shift. In addition, we would like to find sponsors for each class in the show. The cost to sponsor a class is only $50, and it's tax-deductible. The sponsor's name will be printed on the show program.
Riders are welcome too. The show is a schooling and games event. The morning program will be hunter/jumper classes, with several classes for beginner riders. In the afternoon we will have a gymkhana with events such as Dollar Bareback, Musical Feedbags, and Orange in Spoon Carry. The program will be distributed and posted as soon as it is finalized. If you can volunteer to help or want to sponsor a class, please contact Judy Lamont at jlamont@....

Subj: Correction - Great Falls Park Date: 7/21/2006 10:54:01 AM Eastern Daylight Time From: robrentsch@...
Please correct immediately-- The proposal asking that horses be banned from Great Falls Park was the work of one anti-horse individual-submitted to the MCA Environment and Parks Committee. The co-chairs of that committee were kind enough to ask the GFCA how we felt. We, Stella Cook and Robin Rentsch, co-chairs of the Environment and Parks Com., and Elle Weck of Great Falls Trail Blazers replied
that horse use in Great Falls was essential to our efforts to maintain a semi-rural community and preservation of open space. That resolution was therefore voted down unaminously by the McLean Committee.
There was one very irate response from a horse person person which was uncalled for as our advice was being sought before any decision was taken. We need to be sure of our facts before we react and then with a considered and rational response.
Mr Connaughton,
I was unable to attend the meeting last night, but watched it on television when
I returned from my prior engagement.
I was appalled at the rudeness you displayed to Mr. Jeff Shoup during his time
to speak. There was no call to interrupt him to point out a spelling error in
an email he wrote, nor to be sarcastic when he was thanking the Board for the
good work they've done. Your comments displayed a disregard for proper, public
decorum and just plain bad manners. I was sorry to see such behavior by one of
our publicly elected officials.

Mr. Connaughton and Mr. Covington,
Just today, I heard about the sudden and unexpected change of direction of the
deal with the Toll Brothers regarding their proffers in exchange for the
Dominion Valley development project. To say I am disappointed with this turn
of events is an understatement.
I am not generally a supporter of development in our area of Prince William
County - in fact I moved here because of my desire to live a more rural
lifestyle. However, when I heard the proposal by the Toll Brothers included
an equestrian trail and turned a significant amount of land over the the County
Parks authority, I was pleased. I felt like the needs of the citizens in the
western part of PWC (especially the equestrian community) were finally being
considered by the County Board of Supervisors.
Now I understand that 2 years of hard work by Supervisor Stirrup to include
the WC equestrian community in development planning has been undone at the
last minute by Supervisor Connaughton. This is shameful and disheartening to
say the least.
I am asking you to delay the vote on this issue. The public has the right to
voice it's opinion on this new proposal as this is a significant change from
the original plan. The Park Authority, who also seems to lose out on this new
deal, should be allowed to address Supervisor Connaughton's concerns that he
says led him to this change.
Additionally, if a delay of the vote is not possible, I urgently request that
the Toll Brother's original proposal be reinstated and that version of the
proffers to their plan be approved.
Sincerely,
Roberta McIntyre
PASSING THIS ON. DO NOT REPLY.
Hi everyone,
As you have heard, new this year at the Virginia Equine Extravaganza
is the Trainer's Challenge. Held October 27-29 at the Richmond
Raceway, 3 trainers (Charles being one) will each start a young horse
under saddle. That is where they are needing help. We are searching
for six 2 year olds of similar backgrounds (preferably from the same
farm), similar bloodlines, same amount of handling, of a fairly
uniform size. Any breeds are welcome, as long as they are all the
same. Three horses will be drawn. This is a great opportunity for a
breeder to have their horses started with some of the best trainers
in Virginia!
Please forward this message on to any of your horse friends.
In the meantime you can find helpful information about the show, such
as hours, directions, airports, etc. online at
www.equineextravaganza.com.

Yes you are correct Bobbi.I have received about 10 to 15 forwarded messages from members indicating that they got the same response from Sean Connaughton ... the same response that you and Gary have received. However, I know his staff does tally up the number of responses and provides that number to him.I still encourage those that have not written the Chairman to do so.Even if you are not a PrinceWilliamCounty resident, you can state that you are a Nokesville Horse Society member, which does imply that our efforts and opinions are in the best interest of the Prince William county horse community, regardless of where you live. Whether or not he puts any stock in the number of emails he gets from the horse community is a totally different question.

Thanks for the e-mail.The revised proffers will allow the County to take
control of SilverLake or direct Toll Brothers to transfer the property to a
third party such as the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy.Such a transfer would
take place only if the County and the Conservancy can work out a use
agreement, including the provision of human and horse trails, hours of
operation, etc.The idea is to open the park to "equestrians, bicycle
enthusiasts and pet owners" within a year or so since the County and the Park
Authority do not have the funds to open such a park for the near future. If a
use agreement is not reached, SilverLake will be transferred to the County
and opened at some point in the future when funds become available.Best
You should have received my previous email by now explaining the radical change in the DominionValley rezoning engineered by Supervisor Sean Connaughton. If not and you need the details, please send me a reply or call and I will explain all the details of why this is now a bad deal for our horse community. If you have read the earlier email, but did not see that I have created an online petition, WE NEED YOUR ONLINE SIGNATURE NOW!!!We currently only have 48 signatures on the online petition. We are going to need well over 200 to make any kind of impact.
The petition is stated as a petition by PrinceWilliamCounty horse enthusiasts. So, the people signing should be a PW resident, but they don't necessarily need to currently own a horse. If this rezoning proposal is approved in its current form, the recreational property at stake could be limited to no dogs, no bicycles, no fishing in the lake, no boating on the lake, no swimming in the lake, and as said before no horses! If you have signed the online petition but your kids, husband, wife, mother, father, cousin, aunt, uncle has not (you get the idea), please encourage them to sign it now.I will be delivering the print out of the online petition at the Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, July 11 at 7:30pm. (Yes, today, by the time most of you are reading this email). We need all the signatures we can get now!!! Also forward this email to any dog, horse and bicycle enthusiast that you know who live in PrinceWilliamCounty. The online petition website is:
If you are not a Prince William County resident, but a Nokesville Horse Society member outside the county, I encourage you to still email Supervisor Sean Connaughton directly at:sconnaughton@...
Even though you are not a PrinceWilliamCounty resident, if you state you are a Nokesville Horse Society member it will imply that your opinions and interests are those of the Prince William county horse community. Please state in your email:
I strongly encourage you to defer the public hearing of the rezoning request by Toll Brothers for Dominion Valley Country Club. This DominionValley rezoning proposal has been radically changed from the original proposal submitted in June and has been changed merely days before the public hearing. The public has not had adequate time to be educated of this new proposal and to provide an educated response. Further, I strongly recommend that all future proffer donations of land for recreational uses be given solely to the Prince William County Park Authority, versus private entities, where public comment can be obtained to determine the best uses for the property based on the needs and wants of the community that is affected.
