Heidi and I were discussing the Wayland Invitational last evening regarding fund
raising for Curtis Jr Cottengim and 4 Paws for Ability. Heidi had some ideas
for fundraising as part of the event. For example, items could be raffled.
Just about anything from donated products from local retailers to pure junk
(souvenir race carnage parts). Remember it's for a cause! Also, rides around
the block could be sold (or given with a donation) in some of the mouthwatering
EV's that will be on hand. Or, even offer photo ops for people standing next to
their favorite EV drag vehicle and or vehicle owner / driver for a donation.
Lots of possibilities here!
Heidi and our friend Revin Kevin organized the Red River Fiero Ruckus for 2006.
The event sponsored the Austin Smiles organization. It's a group of doctors
that provide free cranial surgery for children with severe birth defects who
can't afford the required surgery. The event was a major success, both in the
fun level and fund raising.
How about a famous Jim Husted motor to raffle off?
Not sure if Jim has the time or if he is overwhelmed but that is
something that raises some money and gets Jim some publicity for his
fantastic motor work.

I was also thinking of lots of smaller things that require little or no expense
or effort. A piece of copper shrapnel, melted terminal, partially vaporized
contactor or chunk of melted rubber from a favorite drag vehicle would make a
great souvenir that would be very easy to raffle. I'm talking about a high
volume of items that raffle very cheap. That gets more people involved because
it isn't something they would use. Raffling things like that is also great fun
because it involves a sense of humor and has a story. Racing may be serious
business, but a little silly fun has its benefits as well! :)
Enjoy!

Hey all
I'll try and bang one together but can't believe we're half way through July
already! I've been telling myself I better get going on one but have been
limited in time, energy and money to start one. I've been working on the mini
chopper and have it built but was hoping to tear it all down for painting but
looks like it'll have to go naked 8^o
FT had a Kostov take a dive on him so he's loading up (as we speak)for a weekend
trip down to the shop where we'll be frankenstiening up an ADC/Kostov mutant to
see if we can get him ready for the event. Knowing FT, he'll be working me like
a dog all weekend so I'm going to be really pressed to bang something out by
then but will try. If nothing else, I'll bring out some odds and ends like
Fusa-fab, Nomex, maybe some AC-46 insulation spray for the DIY'ers out there.
What do you think a blown armature would go for 8^o Maybe a Wayland hall of
Flame brush ring?
Anyway, I'm not sure what I can commit to, but I'll bring out something to throw
in the kitty.
Jim
I'd like a Husted Motor in kit form. All the pieces in a box, ready
for me to put together. Kinda makes it personal.

This is a great idea and reminds me of many years ago at the
Winternationals in Pomona when Shirley Muldowney's kids were little
and she used to destroy the motor on almost every run in order to win
in Top Fuel.
The little kids had a box of burned pistons they would sell to the
fans for $5 each :^D

I was pretty pumped up about it but now having second thoughts about
the material to be used since a few people have mentioned, jokingly
of course, that it could possibly be an ingredient for a plasma event.
I have a key fob here that is a red square reflector with a companies
name on it. So we can find some material that will work like
injection molded plastic like Mike suggested.
So we should probably do some more research. Don't want to short out
anybody's battery pack with NEDRA merchandise :-)

IN the famous words of Margie Thatcher, "Don't go wobbly on us now,
Chip". I should remind you that the KEY fob will be in the presence of
many METAL keys. Methinks your fears are unfounded.
I would have zero interest in anything other than metal!

A device meant to enhance safety in one respect should be designed to
pose the lowest possible safety hazard in all other respects. There
is no _need_ for the fob to be conductive. Non-conductive material
will serve the intended purpose perfectly well.
Race machines have no "key" per se. Generally, on a race machine, the
FOB will be attached to an electrical connector.
On a Jr Dragster, it is quite likely that the driver will often have
the lanyard dangling from their wrist. The fob will be dangling with
it. It would be best to have it non-conductive so that it does not
accidentally become part of a circuit on the race machine.
The very first NEDRA red-triangle fobs were made from red Coroplast.
For sentimental reasons we have one of these original red triangles,
made by hand by Lou Taber, attached to the lanyard of the KillaCycle.
It has made every single pass down the track with the KillaCycle.

sue an apology to Ken and the list. I was having some fun and lost
sight of the original intent of this thread, which btw is an excellent
idea!
As I've mentioned before. If there is a raffle at the event, I would
like to participate; but will not be present. I would like to be able
to order and pay for raffle tickets through the NEDRA website; with
the full knowledge that they must be purchased well in advance of the
event.
Is this viable?

I can always create another PayPal button for a raffle and the funds
would be specifically marked for a raffle.
Of course, that is on top of the other "viable" things I need to get
taken care of.
But yes, we can set up the raffle for Jim's "Mini Motor Dawg
Chopper" :-)

I'll second that, I like the anodized aluminum, I don't wan't plastic! I was just joking about shorting batteries on the Jr. dragster, although I would buy raffle tickets for one, especially if it had a couple of Spartan spears as weapons! Keep up the good work Chip! Rod

IN the famous words of Margie Thatcher, "Don't go wobbly on us now,
Chip". I should remind you that the KEY fob will be in the presence of
many METAL keys. Methinks your fears are unfounded.
I would have zero interest in anything other than metal!

It seems like if they are to be metal, then lead would be the choice, no?
Of course not, it's too damn soft, how about copper? That would be
sharp as hell. Of course most likely, quite a bit more costly than
aluminum too.
Nickel?
Oh, O.K. aluminum will do.

What keys? I thought everyone was using
toggle switches ;-P
But I’m not against aluminum. I don’t
use my keys to tighten my battery posts.

I'm still in discussions with Chuck about the idea.
It sounded like after Jay first mentioned the whole idea to our group
that Chuck could engrave it with the silver image of the aluminum
engraved from the red anodized aluminum but I'm finding out that it's
not that simple and he has to farm it out.
I'm getting tired and not sure if I'm explaining all this right. But
here is Chuck's last message to give you all an idea of where we are
now.
"Chip,
I emailed the supplier and he said that they would be pressing your
logo and lettering into the metal and then filling that in with
color-- probably making a metal stamp with both things on it. They
can do either black or white but it sounds like silver is out. I can
check around and try to find someone else to do that aspect of the
project but I am thinking it would add significantly to the cost.
Stamping is quick and easy, whereas cutting out the design is very
time-consuming. If I can manage to find someone who will engrave it
I am guessing it would add at least $2-3 per piece.
So consider that and let me know if you want me to look around some
more.
Chuck"
I told Chuck in my last email we really prefer the silver effect the
machining will leave after it's engraved from the red anodized
aluminum. We really don't like the black or the white, even if the
image is stamped in.
Whatcha Think?

Sure there are. Search back in the

information for you

Hi all
Just wondering if there are any speed boat
records electric powered (off cause)?

Sorry to be late...Loooooooong racing weekend at Olympia and I'm just
back. Quick notes on that...This is the regatta where we put rookies
into boats for first rides and we did pretty well, getting 40 people
out for their first ride in a racing boat on Friday, and taping a
segment for KIRO TV's Seafair coverage with Chip Hanauer and a few J-
Hydro kids. Also helped Mike Bontoft out with his new toy. Mike's
stepped up to race C-hydroplane to get experience as an aid to
designing future kilo boats.
Anyway, there are a variety of established records and a few open
slots without records. Here's a list of the current fastest by class
noted by records authourity.
UIM, based in Monaco is the official world authority for powerboating
records, but there are several national records that exceed UIM
records or are fastest because nobody's run for the UIM slot.
Battery Marathon: A class that runs a time distance formula on
limited power (125 lb of Lead acid). Typically marathons are 6 hour,
and the best distance was 72 miles, but no record was ever certified.
Solar: A solar kilo record was actually set in 1992 by Otmar driving
a solar powered outrigger kayak at some 6 to 7 mph. Unfortunately the
crafts owner, Ward Phillips never followed up with submission to UIM.
Solar/battery hybrid: An interesting class begging for mischief.
Nothing in rules demands the solar source be of any minimum size or
be wired into the propulsion system. Open record, No attempt made to
date.
48v Hydroplane: A hydroplane powered at 48v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Speed 30.418 mph (APBA) - Driver, Will Paramore 1997. Helen Loney
has the UIM record, set last November at 13 mph. We'd left the UIM
mark as an open target.
48v Runabout: A monohull powered at 48v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Speed (UIM and APBA) 30.136 mph - Driver, Fred Saxby 2008.
72v Runabout: A monohull powered at 48v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Open record, No attempt made to date.
72v Hydroplane: A hydroplane powered at 72v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Speed 49.136 mph - Driver, Norm Boddy 1997. In the attempt Norm's
first pass was 65 mph, with speed lost due to a steering malfunction.
Norm had to pull steering cables tight with one hand, and ran a huge,
extra distance arc on the return pass that killed speed.
144v Runabout: A monohull powered at 48v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Speed 55.914 mph - Driver, Norm Boddy 1994.
144v Hydroplane: A hydroplane powered at 144v (battery manufacturer's
nominal).
Speed 98.252 mph - Driver, Mike Bontoft 2008.
I've put up an album titled "Electric WSR Holders" in the photos
section.

Count me in agreement with metal. Aluminum, or even better, tool steel. :)
As far as tightening battery posts go, I generally tighten mine with a very
conductive tool steel Craftsman ratchet, extension and socket or combination
wrench. I have never used a plastic wrench. Besides, my batteries, cabling,
contactors, etc. are not, never will be and none should ever be exposed enough
for a fumbled piece of metal to Murphy into.
As for cost? If you want something nice - you have to pay for it. If you want
cheap then cheap is what you get.
This post is mostly poking fun. :) But really, count me in with metal!
