Hi Darin,
MegaPixels is how many pixels (in millions) that a camera can take
for each picture.
For example your 6 MegaPixel camera can take a digital photo that is
about 3,000 pixels wide by 2,000 pixels high.
3,000 x 2,000 = 6,000,000 or 6 MegaPixels. You may find that the
biggest size, pixel wise, a little less. They just round it up to 6
MegaPixels.
Now DPI is used to describe printing resolution. DPI means "dots per
inch" or "pixels per inch".
Print media folks such as magazines and newspapers will always ask
for 300 dpi images. 72 or 150 dpi won't be sharp enough for print
publications.
HR wants 4 inch by 4 inch photos that are 300 dpi.
That would be an image that is 1200 pixels (4 x 300) x 1200 pixels (4
x 300) or 1.4 MegaPixels.
When you download that photo to your computer the image will actually
appear to be 16 inches by 16 inches because screen resolution is 72
dpi. So it will look huge on your screen and you will have to scroll
the screen to see the entire picture if your screen resolution is set
to 640 x 480. But the image will print out 4 inches by 4 inches on a
300 dpi printer.
If you take a low res shot there really is nothing you can do
"quality wise" to bring it to 300 dpi. You can interpolate the photo
to increase it to 300 dpi which averages out the colors between the
pixels to fill in the space but the photo will look blurry or fuzzy.
So the question is how to set the camera for the 300 DPI to take the
high-res shots. Every camera is different so you should set it for
the highest resolution. I may be a setting called "HQ" or something.
Essentially this will mean each photo will be over 1 Megabyte.
Hope this helps.
