Hey all, again

The registration for the Buckman Sprint is also open. This race is the newest
addition to our conference, in the response to the recent inclusion of teams
from NJ and PA. If you are skipping Lobsterman, this race will be a MUST to be
competitive in the overall competition!

    1. Go to the Website: http://www.greenbrookracing.com/Buck.html
    2. Clieck "TO REGISTER LIN-MARK.COM COMPUTER SPORTS" from the menu on the
left side.
    3. Follow the registration procedure at the lin-mark.us website.
       * You will need to create an online account for this.
       * In the "Event Entry Form" page, there is not "Collegiate" division
listed, so choose your age group.
       * Also, make sure to answer the optional question, specifying your school
and discount code. (Ask your team captain for the code.)

Thanks,

Hi all,

We are still looking for people who can serve for the NECTC Board for the coming
2009-2010 seasons. We currently have six members, but with the rapid increase
in the size of the conference, we simply need more people!

Organizing our conference is a challenging task, but a rewarding experience and
absolutely great for your resume. All the positions are voluntary but members
will some benefit, such as, travel budget support for the races.

Especially, we are looking for someone who can manage our Web site and scoring.
Again, this will be a great experience on your resume, if you are pursuing
career in the web development, information management, information technology,
etc. The whole system has been pretty much setup by Bret, using a typical LAMP
(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) setup. So you don't need to build the system from
scratch.

Let me (keisuke[at]nectc.net), if you are interested in helping us.

Following are the current board members:

- Keisuke Inoue (Conference Director)
- Stephen Poirier (Sponsorship Coordinator)
- Rori Alter (Race Coordinator)
- Michael T Fenoff (Communications)
- Bret Fortenberry (Webmaster)
- Zuzana Trnovcova (USAT Collegiate Regional Representative)

Thank you very much & I'm looking forward to hearing you.

Keisuke Inoue,
for the NECTC Board

PS: Below are the list of tasks for the board members. + indicates we already
have someone working on it, and - indicates we still need someone.

+ Race Scheduling
+ Sponsorship
+ Communication
- Volunteer Coordination at Cranberry and Mightyman
- Awards
- Treasury
- Scoring
- Web Management

Hi all,

First of all, thank you very much for participating the NECTC in 2008.
The NECTC grew strongly over the 2008 season, becoming one of the
fastest-growing collegiate conferences in the US, hosting 17+ schools
and 170+ members.

In order to sustain this growing organization, the board members
(Bret, Zuzka, and myself) of the NECTC are calling for new board
members, who can help us in various capacities. We are specifically
looking for people who will be able to work with the current board
members through the coming 2009 season, and to take in charge for the
2010 season.

So if you are interesting in helping us, read the following
descriptions and drop me line at keisuke[at]nectc.net, with 1) Your
name; 2) School; 3) Year (Undergrad), Grad, or Alumnus and 4) Task(s)
you would like to take on. Please do it so by Jan. 5th, 2009.

We work hard, but it is a an exciting and well-rewarding experience.
You will get to work with various wonderful people from different
places, organizations, sponsors, and race organizers. It will surly
help you when you will be in a job market, whatever the career you are
seeking, as well. ;-)

Descriptions:

1. Term: A two year term with a replacement of one half of the
members every year.

New members will be working for the positions listed below, guided by
senior members in the first year. As they become officers (i.e.
Director and Assistant Directors) in the second year, their roles will
shift to guiding new members and supervising the overall process.

2. Election Process:

New board members will be simply voluntary positions (, unless we have
an overwhelming number of people stepping up, in which case we will
need an election) and called for by the officers (directors and
assistant directors), during the off season or beginning of the season
(i.e. now). The officers will be nominated by the board members and
approved by the member schools' votes, at the end of the season. (We
skipped this process in 2008, because we are the only board members
anyway.)

3. Board Member Tasks:

Following are the tasks that we are looking for help. You are more
than welcomed to fill in multiple tasks (or creating new ones).

  - Race Scheduling
  - Sponsorship
  - Communication
  - Volunteer Coordination at Mightyman
  - Awards
  - Treasury
  - Scoring
  - Web Management

The first six task do not have particular requirements, but Scoring
and Web Management require basic knowledge of SQL and PHP.

Treasurer needs some work and close communication when they transfer
positions, so I personally think it should be taken by someone in a
large (sustainable) team or a big city (i.e. Boston). Needless to say,
it is a very important position, so I would consider the director,
assistant director, and treasurer are the executive officers of the
board. If

Other than that, I think each task is self-explanatory. If you would
like to know more details, send questions to me or to this list. An
important thing is that although all these tasks require some time and
effort, and sometimes tedious, they are all important to the NECTC and
it will be a well-rewarding experience.

4. USAT Collegiate Commission

The representative for the USAT collegiate commission is also
considered as a part of the NECTC board. The position is two-year term
and currently held by Zuzka in MIT, who will be in the position until
the end of 2009. So we don't need someone to fill in this position
this year.

Thank you very much & I'm looking forward to hearing you.

Keisuke Inoue,

Hey triathletes,

I just wanted to check if there are any team captains on this list that didn't get my emails about nationals recently (one sent just today).

If so, please email me back, especially if you are interested in nationals in 2009. Even if you are not interested in nationals, but would like to register your team with Northeast conference, please email Bret (bret.fortenberry at gmail.com) and he'll guide you through the registration process.

This should be the list of schools registered: http://nectc.net/teams.php

If your school is not on the list, please, let me and/or Bret know ASAP.

Congrats to Dalessio (Boston Univ.) and Kim Zubris (Boston Univ.), for
winning the collegiate division of the Cranberry County Triathlon and
receiving the first leader jerseys of the NECTC point series in 2008!

Dalessio came out of the water 47 seconds behind Paul Knepley
(Syracuse Univ.), who had the fastes swim time of the division at
18:44, but while Knepley was knocking down the bike racks in
transition, Dalessio took off and increased the lead with the fastest
bike time (1:03:06) and the fastest run time (38:27) in the division.
Dalessio finished at 2:03:47, with a 6:23 margin to Knepley, who
finished the second at 2:10:03. An Ironman Lake Placid 2008 finisher
Russ Erickson (Colombia) finished the third with 2:13:12.

Kimberly Zubris (Boston Univ.), similarly finished with a 6:24 margin
to the second place finisher Melissa Gymrek (MIT). Kathryn Bewley
(Boston) finished the swim section the first in the division with
22:59, while Zburis was the second at 28:59 and Gymrek was the third
with 37:55. Zubris and Gymrek caught Bewley during the bike section
with 2nd and 1st fastest bike split respectively. Gymrek closed in to
Zburis during the bike and the run, but Zubris held the lead and
finished at 2:39:28. Gymrek followed Zbris at 2:46:04 and Bewley
finished the third at 2:55:17.

Boston Univ. became the leader of the team point competition, by
bringing five strong members. Congrats to all the BU members!

Norwich and Northeastern joined the NECTC for the first this season.
So my warmest welcome to both teams!

Hi all,

As you might have noticed that the Finger Lakes Triathlon has been
already sold out. Linda, the race director has saved 25 slots for us,
but they have over 100 people on the waiting list.

In order to make Linda's job a tiny bit easier, I will collect all the

sent forms yet, please send forms and checks to the following address:

Please make sure your forms and checks will get here by September 1st.
I will send them to Linda on September 2nd and will be out of town for

Hi all,

We are raffling off a gift certificate for an XTerra Wetsuit (Vortex
2, MSRP $259) to those who will have registered for either Lobsterman
or Finger Lakes by the end of August.

The rule is simple: just enter either of the races following our
normal procedure. Make sure your captain has sent me the team roster
with your name. I will check the participant lists as of Sept. 1st and
randomly choose one lucky fellow triathlete. I will announce the
winner on this mailing-list. Entering both races will double the
chance of winning.

We are hoping this will boost early registration for these races and
give a wetsuit to a beginner or an athlete who doesn't own one yet.
We are looking forward to seeing many entries, so spread the word to
your team mates!

Thanks,

Keisuke Inoue
Director, NECTC

PS: Just FYI: We received two gift certificates from XTerra Wetsuits,
based on the number of wetsuits we purchased last year using the NECTC
discount. The more we purchase this year, the more free wetsuits we
will get. We will have a similar (50%) discount once the semester
begins and, as in this give-away, we will give back the free wetsuits
to the athletes. So stay tuned if you are planning to purchase a
wetsuit this year.

PPS: And yes, we will have another wetsuit give-away later in the
season...

Hi all,

I would like to annonce a new requirement for all the NECTC member
schools, so please read the following carefully.

This year, we will require each NECTC team to provide two volunteers
for the Mightyman Half Triathlon, which is held on the following day
of our race, Mightyman Sprint. Each volunteer will be paid $25* and
will be elligible for the staff party after the race, so although I
said "requirement", it will be a fun experience.

This decision was made for a couple of reasons:

1) In order to raise funds for the conference. The race organizer will
pay us $15* per volunteer, which in turn can be spent improve the
conference such as plaques, banners, posters, etc. By doing this
volunteering, we can avoid collecting dues.

2) To help the race organization and continue the good relationship
with the community. I am hoping this event will be like Wildflower in
the west coast, where hundreds of collegiate triathletes race,
volunteer and have a great time.

Of course, more than two people from one team can volunteer as well.
In fact, I encourage all of you to volunteer!

In case none of your team mates can volunteer, we will ask you to pay
a membership due ($50*). Failing this requirement will disqualify your
team and teammates from the NECTC (and thus Collegiate Regional)
ranking so please be careful.

* All the prices are subject to change. But I will try to keep the
volunteer's pay as high as possible while the membership fee is kept
reasonable.

I will start collecting the information for the volunteers once the
race date is closer. For now, I would like you to be aware of this
requirment and discuss with your teammates (who to volunteer, etc).

This is a new attempt and I am willing to hear feedback from any of
you. So let me (keisuke[at]nectc.net) know if you have any comments.

Thank you,

If you haven't looked at the Summer 2008 issue of Triathlon Life,

With the picture of you and/or your friends, you will find how the

how much we have achieved since then. By all means, we are still under
development, but as I tried to tell in the article, we have been
supported by many people in the loca triathlon community: race
organizers, USAT officials, team captains, and athletes and have built
a strong foundation for a good conference. Now is the time for you to

Hi all,

Here are the details about the Finger Lakes Triathlon, our race #3.

*** I'm afraid that you may want to skip this race because of the
travel, but the race is held at a very beautiful venue and the race
organization is always excellent. I am sure this race will be worth
traveling for you all and you will never regret doing the race! ***

Finger Lakes Traithlon (Sprint)
Date: Sunday, September 21st 2008
Place: Canandaigua, NY

REGISTRATION:

The discounted race entry fee for collegiate athletes is $65. In order
to receive the discount, you need to sign up using the attached race
entry form.

Also, this race offers and an interesting program, you or your team
might want to consider.

TRAIN FOR TREATMENT:

Train For Treatment is a program through which your team can enter the
race by raising donations for the Hemophilia Center. Every $300 a team
raise will be counted towards one entry fee for the race. As a team,
you can raise as much as you can, and pay whatever the rest you need
to pay (if any).

This is a great program that gives us an opportunity to help our
community through triathlon (and to race cheaply :). $300 is really a
generous amount, compare to other similar programs, and I am sure as a
team or even as a individual, you can raise more than that.

If you are interested, please contact Linda
(linda.miller@... or (585)922-4168). She will setup a
website and stuff.

ACCOMMODATION:

If you need information for accommodation please let me

may arrange a place of our tri. club member or contact the Canandaigua
Chamber to get more information.

Hi all,

just wanted to introduce myself and tell you that I'll do my best as the USAT
collegiate representative for the next two years. This year I'll be a senior at
MIT and afterwards should be around one more year to do my MEng. I've been
training for and racing triathlons (sprints and olympic) for the last 2 years,
mostly the last year. My main sport is cycling, but I'm also trying to improve
my not-very-good swim. And I run sometimes inbetween...

As Bret mentioned, feel free to write me an email with any questions or concerns
you may have about collegiate triathlon. I should have a phone call with all
other collegiate representatives on 8/10, so I should know more about
everything after then, but I'll try to answer your questions promptly even
before.

Until then, enjoy the summer, training and racing!

Zuzka

P.S. You can reach me at my MIT address (zuzka at mit.edu) or this gmail address. I should check both every day. Please include "collegiate triathlon" within the email header if possible. Thank you!

As the old collegiate representative I am happy to inform you that we have a new USAT collegiate representative.

Zuzana (Zuzka) Trnovcova from the MIT triathlon team will be our representative for the next two years.  You can direct any questions about nationals, collegiate rules or the direction collegiate triathlon is moving to her.  The NECTC will be in direct contact and will be working with Zuzka, USAT and the other USAT triathlon conferences in the nation.

The role of the USAT collegiate representative is to have a way that the collegiate teams are supported and heard.  The past few years the representatives have pushed to keep from USAT having complete control.  This became a huge issue when they wanted to have the race at Reno, NV only because they could get it televised.  After that we worked to improve scoring, registering, issues with how the races are ran and we pushed to bring races on the east coast on a regular basis.  If you have any concerns with Nationals, rules or how things are done you can send your concerns to Zuzka and they will be heard.  You must realize that the board has to consider every team in the nation so your concerns might not be address but the more you speak up the more the board pushes.

One direction that we are headed is concerns with how fast nationals sells out every year.  Each year the number of participants increases and it causes the race to sell out earlier.  We have already moved to a limit of 20 members per team.  One of the thoughts is to have each conference (NECTC) to select the top teams and individuals for nationals.  The number of teams and members that get to go will be based on the size and strength of each conference.  Thus the larger and faster our conference becomes the more people we will send to nationals.  If this system gets implemented it will not be for 3 to 4 years.  Yet if you have thoughts or concerns with this your opinions will help mold and direct how this or if this will get implemented.

For questions about the NECTC you can contact Keisuke Inoue our conference director. For questions about the NECTC website you can still contact me, Bret Fortenberry.

    http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1500120

The race organizer (Tri-Maine) gave us a very generous $40 discount

In order to receive the discount, you will need to enter a passcode at
the online registration, which I e-mailed to all of your captains. If
your captain did not receive my e-mail, please let him/her know to
e-mail me (keisuke[at]nectc.net).

A quick info. about the race:

Date: Sat. September 13, 2008
Start Time: 8:30 A.M.
Where: Winslow Park in Freeport, Maine
Distances: Olympic Distance race

As you know, the collegiate registration for the Cranberry County
Triathlon is closing soon, JULY 1st!

We are originally given 30 slots, and if we fill-in the slots by then,
we may have more slots. So I am hoping many of you will register quickly.

The collegiate price has been discounted to $60 and we have a separate
wave for the collegiate athletes to enable everybody to race against
each other, which, as you know, is always a blast.

The registration form is on a password protected section on the NECTC
website. So if your school doesn't have an access, email to Bret
Fortenberry (bret[at]nectc.net) to have it setup.

The Cranberry Triathlon is a very well run race, which serves as the
regional club championship, too I'm many of you will take this
opportunity!

Hello NECTC,

As specified in the subject, the collegiate registration for the Cranberry Olympic is now open.  We have 30 slots available and they are going to issued on a first come first serve basis.  If we get 30 slots filled immediately we might be able to convince Eric (the race director) to open up more slots.  However, he is hesitant because not that many people signed up last year.  Do not delay because the conference has grown from last year and from the feedback I have received it sounds like the slots may fill up.  You don't want to miss out on this race because you took too long to register.

The collegiate price has been discounted to $60 and we have a separate wave for the collegiate athletes to enable everybody to race against each other.  For those who have not raced Cranberry before it is a well run race and is a quick but challenging course.  This will be the ideal race both timing (right at the end of the summer season) and speed if you are trying to get a faster qualifying time for the collegiate nationals.

To get the discount and to be scored as a collegiate athlete you must sign up through the collegiate registration.  This requires a form to fill out and mailed in.  Please account for the time to distribute the form to all of your members and get them back.  Note we are getting towards the end of the semester and it will simplify things if you can get this done before people leave.

The form is on a password protected section on the NECTC website.  Some schools already have an account and they can log on to get the form.  The schools that do not have an account, you can contact me: Bret Fortenberry (bret@...) to have an account setup.

I will send out an email to the teams that already have an account in case you have forgotten your password.  The forms and instructions to sign up for Cranberry are linked from the 2008 NECTC race calendar.

Thanks everybody and I am looking forward to a competitive 2008 season.

If you are a team captain (or a lone triathlete in your school), please
let me (kinoue[at]syr.edu) your or your team's plan for the 2008 season.

I would like to know the estimation of how many teams and people are
participating which races. If you are not sure, just tell me so, too.
This will help us a lot when we negotiate with the race directors about
the entry fees, etc. or with prospective sponsors.

Thanks!

Hi all,

Here is the final version of the NECTC 2008 race schedule.

I know it's end of the semester and you are all busy, preparing for the
finals, but please communicate with your team members and make up a plan
for the exciting second season of the NECTC before the summer break!

We basically selected the most-attended races from the 2007 season. As
in the last season, let's make it a requirement to attend the
championship race (Mightyman) to win the overall regional title, while
you can count in scores from at most two races prior to the
championships. (If you attended all the three races before the
championship, you can use the score from the two best races.) Let me
know if you have any questions.

1) Aug. 24 Cranberry County (MA)
    Website: http://www.cranberrycountrytri.com/
    Format: Olympic

2) Sep. 13 Lobsterman (ME)
    Website: http://www.tri-maine.com/Lobster.html
    Format: Olympic

3) Sep. 21 Finger Lakes (NY)
    Website: http://www.fingerlakestriathlon.com/
    Format: Sprint

4) Oct. 4 Mightyman Sprint - Regional Championships (NY)
    Website: http://www.eventpowerli.com/2008/index.cfm?ID=52
    Format: Sprint

The registration procedures for the races are not fixed yet. I'll keep
you updated as we negotiate with the race organizers.
(Wait for my next post for the Cranberry Triathlon registration.)

Have a good summer and I'm looking forward to see you all in the fall
(if not at a race in the summer)!

K
