Hi all,
Here is the final version of the NECTC 2008 race schedule.
I know it's end of the semester and you are all busy, preparing for the
finals, but please communicate with your team members and make up a plan
for the exciting second season of the NECTC before the summer break!
We basically selected the most-attended races from the 2007 season. As
in the last season, let's make it a requirement to attend the
championship race (Mightyman) to win the overall regional title, while
you can count in scores from at most two races prior to the
championships. (If you attended all the three races before the
championship, you can use the score from the two best races.) Let me
know if you have any questions.
1) Aug. 24 Cranberry County (MA)
Website: http://www.cranberrycountrytri.com/
Format: Olympic
2) Sep. 13 Lobsterman (ME)
Website: http://www.tri-maine.com/Lobster.html
Format: Olympic
3) Sep. 21 Finger Lakes (NY)
Website: http://www.fingerlakestriathlon.com/
Format: Sprint
4) Oct. 4 Mightyman Sprint - Regional Championships (NY)
Website: http://www.eventpowerli.com/2008/index.cfm?ID=52
Format: Sprint
The registration procedures for the races are not fixed yet. I'll keep
you updated as we negotiate with the race organizers.
(Wait for my next post for the Cranberry Triathlon registration.)
Have a good summer and I'm looking forward to see you all in the fall
(if not at a race in the summer)!

Eric,
I couldn't agree with you more. The entire weekend was filled with
spirit and energy at a level that is rarely matched. Great job to
the 117+ schools that made the great effort to travel and compete!

I had the privilege of attending the Collegiate Nationals last weekend
in Tuscaloosa. The energy and excitement displayed by collegiates is
unmatched in our sport. It's gratifying to see triathletes come together

USAT should do everything possible to support and stimulate Collegiate

Thanks to those who provided feedback. I am still looking for more
feedback. I am particularly interested in knowing races you or your
team are planning to do during the summer. Since we'll be rather
spread out during the summer, if we are having a race during the
summer, I would like to make sure we will have a good attendance.
So far I collected following races:
1) Jun. 7, Mooseman Triathlon (New Found Lake, NH)
http://www.timbermantri.com/moosemanindex.html
2) Jun. 30, Shipbuilders Triathlon (Bath, ME)
http://www.tri-maine.com/Shipbuilders%20news.htm
3) Aug. 3, Wild Cat Sprint Triathlon (Lowell, MA)
http://www.firm-racing.com/prerace.asp?RID={612ABB30-BC24-4EDE-A7CF-18327AFC6756\
}
4) Aug. 3, ITC Cayuga Lake Triathlon (Ithaca, NY)
http://www.ithacatriathlonclub.org/race/default.html
5) Aug. 10, Cazenovia Triathlon (Cazenovia, NY)
http://www.cnytriathlon.org-a.googlepages.com/cazenoviatriathlonhome
Like I mentioned earlier, 5) is the best bet if we want a decent
support from race organizers. Another interesting idea (suggested by
Rori@BU) is to do the Cayuga Lake Triathlon. The race is the Sprint
Distance National Championship this year, so some of you are planning
to go to the race anyway. It is a very well organzied race, and if we
have a good turn-out, we can ask the race organizer to support us from
next year.
The Cayuga Lake Triathlon is filling up very quickly, so let me know
asap if you think this is a good idea.
Thanks,

Hi all,
I hope you are having good winter training, preparing for the
coming-up Nationals and the NECTC season that follows it. I have a
couple of ideas that I would like to share with you and have feedback
from you all.
1. FALL RACE SCHEDULE:
I propose the following races for our fall season.
1) Aug. 24 Cranberry County (MA)
2) Sep. 13 Lobsterman (ME)
3) Sep. 21 Finger Lakes (NY)
4) Oct. 4 Mightyman Sprint - Regional Championships (NY)
I think 1), 2), and 4) are no-brainers. The races are very well
organized and the race organizers are very supportive.
3) is a bit far from many schools. But for Syracuse (and a few other
schools in our area), all the races are 6+ hours drive distance, so I
would like to include it. I think the race is well-organized and the
venue is great, worth travelling. I hope other schools will be
interested in doing this race, but I would love to hear oinions and
alternative ideas from other schools.
2. SUMMER RACES
In addition, I think we can have a couple of summer races, if there's
enougth interests. Let me know if you know any good races in the
region during the summer, or any races that you or your school will
participate.
* If there's not enough interest, we won't do it, so let me how you think.
I have a couple of races in my mind:
1) Jun. 30 Shipbuilders Triathlon (Bath, ME)
This is a olympic distance triathlon, organized by the same race
organizer of the Lobsterman, so we can assume the race will be
organized.
http://www.tri-maine.com/Shipbuilders%20news.htm
2) Aug. 10, Cazenovia Triathlon (Cazenovia, NY)
This is a race organized by a local triathlon club in Syracuse so I'm
sure we can get discount as a collegaite and a separate wave start.
There are intermediate and sprint distances. The problem of this race
is travel. I think pretty much everyone has to travel for this race.
(Even SU people are not in town during the summer.) They let athletes
to use the dorm rooms of the near-by Cazenovia College, so
accommodation is cheap (~$40).
http://www.cnytriathlon.org-a.googlepages.com/cazenoviatriathlonhome
Again, let me know how you guys think.

Did you try Champion System (http://champ-sys.com/)?
They are generous enough to provide us the leader jerseys and offer a
very nice deal (low minimum, no color charges, low cost). The
turn-around is faster than other makers, too, in my experience, so if
you are aiming for the Nationals, they have a better chance.

Hello conference!
Happy off season! The Northeastern University Triathlon Team is looking into getting uniforms in time for Nationals. Can anyone recommend a good distributor/contact to work with? We have a design, but are having a hard time finding companies with triathlon apparel and/or making some companies' required minimum orders (~25 pieces for some places). Our current order will be about half that size. Any advice/companies/contacts you can share would be appreciated. Now that the new year has come, you maybe, just maybe, have been thinking about
your
summer racing schedule. And maybe some have you considered signing up for the
collegiate
70.3 (half ironman) championship in Lawrence, Kansas? Its June 15th and also a
qualifier for
Clearwater. This is its first year so hasn't sold out yet, although nearly all
other 70.3 filled up
quickly, so I would consider registering soon. Once you do, get in contact with
me, and we
can represent the NECTC (plus it would be easiest to minimize costs by sharing
transportation and hotel rooms etc).
enjoy the cold weather, if you are one of those crazy people

There will be an additional reason go to go nationals this year. After the nationals race on the same day, the Olympic qualifier will be held on the exact same course. I am certain that there will be spectators there to watch the Olympic trial that will also want to watch the Collegiate Championship.
The unfortunate part is that the A-day game is going to be on the same day again. This means that air fare will be expensive and hotel rooms will be tight. So book early because you will be completing availability with two other events. Last year USAT reserved extra hotel rooms for USAT collegiate. I know they will do the same this year but they might also use those rooms for the Olympic qualifier athletes and for the other races. My guess is that it will be harder to reserve hotel rooms this year.
I received this from the RD this morning. It has the entire race weekend scheduled. Additionally, I hard A-Day (the spring scrimmage football game that 90,000 people attend) is being held on April 19th.... I'm going to see if anyone will address this at today's press conference.
__________________________________________________________________________ Since it was just announced on Channel 13 here in Birmingham, I can FINALLY release the news as well.

actually the whole weekend!!! GREAT NEWS...we have the 2008 Olympic Triathlon Trials right here in our back yard - Tuscaloosa, AL!

Oh that explains why the President of our region asked me what I thought of the nationals race course.
I just happened to say that the bike course was the perfect mixture to make the course extremely fast but still challenging. Yup I am the reason that the Olympic trial is there.
Check out this link from the Birmingham news below. There will be a pro/amateur race the day after Nationals, but that isn't the ITU race. I will be attending the press conference tomorrow so I'll get all the details after that. Kevin is correct about the final selection race to be in Hawaii, but it was cancelled. Matt Bonvicin, our Southeast USAT Rep was telling me that USAT loves T-Town for some reason, hence the coaching clinic last weekend.
What Kevin mentioned is exactly what is written on the active.com page that describes the event.

to find talent in the age group ranks to be developed towards the 2012 olympics.

Thanks to all the participants of the NECTC '07! We started the season
with a modest turn-out, but finished it with a great success. I hope you
all enjoyed the season and come back next year.
Congratulations to the overall champion Julia Roman-duval (Boston) and
Paul Knelpley (Syracuse), as well as the team winners UVM and Boston
University!
I put the picture from the Mightyman on the website http://nectc.net (I
screwed the news...hopefully Bret will fix it soon...). I think it's
really nice picture, so check it out. If you want an original image with
a better resolution, e-mail Mike (mtfenoff.syr.edu). If you are an award
winner, he might have a picture of you, as well, so e-mail him.
Thanks again and I hope to see you all at the nationals. Have a good off
season!

Everybody thank you for a great season. We started slow but we picked it up towards then end. We are still working out all the kinks and we are expecting next year will be much better than this year. We still need to set up a board that consist of one representative from each school. There have been several instances where decisions had to be made this year and with the absence of the board the decision was made based on the opinion of a select few rather than representing all the teams. Our goal is to mold the conference to the desires of all the teams and not to the decisions of a select few. In the next coming year I will contact each team individual to get a board representative from each school. I am going to take some time to catch up on my work so this will not happen right away.
Congratulations goes out to: Paul from Syracuse and Julia from Boston University for winning the individual male and female point series race. The top three places all won some great prizes including a ruby project helmet and glasses. Next year if we can get people to pay for wetsuits through the amazing 40% xterra discount we will also have some wetsuits to give away to next year's winners (or raffle them off to people who are in need of a wetsuit).
As you can see the advantage went to the athletes that did the most races. However, it still required top scores from the athletes in order to win the point series. Some changes we are going to be looking into is to refine the races to bring as many teams to each race as possible. We are able to request more support from the race directors the more athletes we get to each race. Unfortunately this year did not help out our image with race directors. Some races we only had 13 people and we are hoping that this will change next year.
Some of the immediate changes will be to establish fingerlakes sooner and to drop vineland from the series. We also need to look into the split of cranberry and PSU. This is a decision that will need to be addressed by the future NECTC board. One need that we did not know about until this year is that we will need to get the race directors to guarantee a certain amount of spots upto the day of the race. For many of the races, teams were trying to sign up the week or day before the race. The only way this is possible is if we know roughly how many schools will be going and how many athletes each school is bringing. We will try to get this established by next year.
Hi all,
I just got a message from Vicki, saying we have *59* collegiate
participants in Mightyman so far. This is, by far, the largest
collegiate competition in our region!
So thank you to all the captains who are brining their teams together
and individuals coming to the race! Good luck to you all and see you
soon at the race.
K, NECTC & SUTC
We have four schools only separated by 40 points going into mighty man. Since the points are worth double for the conference final and each place is separated by 20 points, all four teams are only separated by two places. This is still any body's race.
One more thing about the Mightyman:
As I announced earlier, you can volunteer for the the race on the next
day of our race and get $50 reimbursement for your race entry fee. In
addition, the race volunteer will be invited to the staff party on
Sat. after the race, so get the free meal, too.
I need to know a rough count of volunteers by tomorrow afternoon, so
if you or your team is going to the race, and planning to do
volunteering please let me know. So far I know only BU (how many?)
and SU are doing.
Thanks!
K
This is will be the last reminder to register for Mightyman.
The race information is available at:
http://www.longislandtri.com/index.cfm?ID=32
It's a short sprint distance triathlon, which is perfect for even
beginners. This will be our last race in this season, and I am

in the region EVER, so don't miss this great event!

I totally agree with the points Bret made.
This is a good lesson that we learned. For next year, by planning the
season good ahead, and knowing which teams are going to which races
ahead of the season, we can avoid the problem, all of which need all the
teams to meet up to discuss at some point. We should talk more a the
Mightyman.
This conference has just started and we need more input and active
participation from all the schools, i.e. BU, Syracuse, MIT, Yale, West
Point, UVM, Brown, Harvard, WU, PSU, and NE. We really want *all of you*
to be involved in the discussion and competition.
We have been fortunate to have Bret, as a USAT Collegiate Commission,
and the board members in USAT North East (Steve Kelly, Ian Briggs, and
Eric Averill), all of whom have been very supportive of our conference.
I heard we are becoming a role model of other collegiate conferences. It
is really a time for all of us to get involved and discuss, plan, and
implement the better conference.

Jut want to remind you that the online registration for the NECTC
Championship race (Sprint Mightyman) is still open:
http://www.longislandtri.com/index.cfm?ID=32
The race organizer for this race has been extremely supportive of our
conference, offering us:
+ $30 entry fee discount
+ volunteer opportunity for *$50 money back from entry fee*
+ race-site camping option
Other than those benefits, this will be the Collegiate Regional
Championship race, so overall winners in each division (Male
Individual, Female Individual, and Team) will be awarded at the award
ceremony.
Hope to see many of you there. Check out the my previous message for
the details about the race. And let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

I know this is way over due but the point series points are finally up. The race at Mightyman is going to be very interesting. The team scores are currently: MIT killing everybody with: 270 points UVM: 190 Boston University: 150
Syracuse: 140
However, MIT's score is based on three and the rest are based on two. The way it works is that the top four scores count and Mightyman is worth double points. This means any of the other teams have a chance to earn an extra 100 points that MIT cannot win. This could potentially put one of the other teams either ahead or right on MIT's tail going into Mightyman.

Thanks,

I just had a meeting with everybody the collegiate commission and we have standardized the conference scoring for all conferences. The change has been added to the cranberry results and all the rules are listed at the bottom. This change along with the addition of one of the female athletes that was missed from the results completely changed the team results. If you have any questions, concerns, complaints or compliments :), just email me and I will address all of them. I can't say that I can give you the answer you want to hear though. Sorry about the alteration but I felt it was best to apply the standards now after one race then to wait until next year.
Hey everyone,
Two MIT triathletes would like to participate in Lobsterman, but
neither have a car and both are under 21 (and so they can't rent a
car). Is anyone from the Boston area willing to give them a ride? We
can supply a bike rack (2 bikes) and they're happy to bike somewhere
to meet before you drive up. We're happy to pay for gas.
Thanks . . . let me know!
