Everybody thank you for a great season. We started slow but we picked it up towards then end. We are still working out all the kinks and we are expecting next year will be much better than this year. We still need to set up a board that consist of one representative from each school. There have been several instances where decisions had to be made this year and with the absence of the board the decision was made based on the opinion of a select few rather than representing all the teams. Our goal is to mold the conference to the desires of all the teams and not to the decisions of a select few. In the next coming year I will contact each team individual to get a board representative from each school. I am going to take some time to catch up on my work so this will not happen right away.
Congratulations goes out to:
Paul from Syracuse and Julia from Boston University for winning the individual male and female point series race. The top three places all won some great prizes including a ruby project helmet and glasses. Next year if we can get people to pay for wetsuits through the amazing 40% xterra discount we will also have some wetsuits to give away to next year's winners (or raffle them off to people who are in need of a wetsuit).
As you can see the advantage went to the athletes that did the most races. However, it still required top scores from the athletes in order to win the point series. Some changes we are going to be looking into is to refine the races to bring as many teams to each race as possible. We are able to request more support from the race directors the more athletes we get to each race. Unfortunately this year did not help out our image with race directors. Some races we only had 13 people and we are hoping that this will change next year.
Some of the immediate changes will be to establish fingerlakes sooner and to drop vineland from the series. We also need to look into the split of cranberry and PSU. This is a decision that will need to be addressed by the future NECTC board. One need that we did not know about until this year is that we will need to get the race directors to guarantee a certain amount of spots upto the day of the race. For many of the races, teams were trying to sign up the week or day before the race. The only way this is possible is if we know roughly how many schools will be going and how many athletes each school is bringing. We will try to get this established by next year.
I hope to see everybody at nationals in April.
Thank you,
Bret Fortenberry
