The purpose of this email is to update the NCNCA community on the status of Bay Area Women’s Cycling for 2012.

First, let me thank you and the NCNCA for its continuous support of Bay Area Women’s Cycling (BAWC) and its mission to increase the health and well-being of girls and women by promoting bicycling and bicycle racing. The NCNCA has supported BAWC for ten consecutive years, enabling women’s skills clinics and women’s racing series which have directly led to more women entering the sport and to greater opportunities for single category women’s races. We have received countless pieces of feedback over the years about the impact that these programs have made on motivating increased involvement of women in the racing community.

Second, currently I’m looking for a replacement to lead BAWC in the future. My own personal priorities have shifted as I have recently taken on a new role outside of racing which demands my focus and energy. If there are passionate and capable individuals interested to take over the mission of BAWC, please direct them to me.

In the meantime, there will be no BAWC Women’s Racing Series for 2012. In absence of other women’s series, the NCNCA Points Series is transforming to include more emphasis than in the past on women’s categories. I encourage you to contact NCNCA and let them know what you’d like to see for women’s racing in this series.

Sincerely,

Brooke Kuhn

Sliding across the pavement today, after placing my front tire in the grass
trough adjacent to the turn, I was reminded that mistakes have consequences, and
that I don't like sliding across the pavement.

The Advanced Racing Clinic helps you make fewer mistakes.

There are a few spots left for the clinic on April 14th and we'd like to extend
the invitation to category 3 and higher riders to come join us. The clinic is
$100 and runs from 12-5p at the Fremont Crit course off Stevenson and 880.
Category 4 riders who are on the cusp of upgrading, or make a particularly
strong case, are welcome to request a spot in the clinic as well.

TEAMS - we've got a special price of only $85 per rider if you bring 3 out! In
addition to a great deal it's a chance for teammates to work together AND gives
us some great options for group drills and scrimmages!

Lots of great comments and ideas there, especially the concept of supporting
RACING, not dividing our community!

For anybody interested, Oregon Bicycle Racing Association has two e-mail
lists that are both very positive, and both support racing the way Kieran
suggests. WWW.OBRA.org. In Oregon, the racing community is a real
COMMUNITY!

Subject: [NCVA] Re: Track information at NCNCA.org

Well after a little more thought I suppose it's not entirely valid for
me or anyone else to expect the NCNCA site to meet the needs of the
entire racing community.

It's apparent to me the NCNCA site (USAC) is interested in meeting
it's own needs *first* and the needs of the racers/community are a
distant second priority. This is in contrast to the Hellyer site which
by listing ALL events going on; Hellyer truly has the goal of meeting
the needs of all the track racers/participants in this district
*first*, with the USAC needs being a distant second priority. (as it
should be IMHO)

From some of the comments above perhaps in the past NCNCA was truly
out to meet the needs of the racers/community as the first priority...
but I guess that has changed with the growing influence/control of the
USAC monopoly.

In a lesser way this reminds me of the United States Constitution
goals of a federal government with "limited" powers. In the case of
USAC they are a sort of federal entity imposing rules on all
localities and taking a fair share (perhaps unfair in some cases) of
"tax" in doing so. I do think USAC has the goal to generally the sport
of cycling and support that, which by and large it's successful at.
However, this entity wants the sport to grow only in so far as it has
complete control over it. This at times can damage the sport for the
sake of it's own interests. USAC cares little for growing the sport
outside of it's influence I guess. (hopefully I'm wrong here, but from
Bill's tactless comments and Warrens well thought out responses it
seems to be the case)

What is troubling is new or "green" racers are falsely led to believe
USAC is for all types of bicycle racing and truly has an altruistic
goal for growing the sport. I used to think that like most others I
presume when I started racing. This is not the case. A bit of false
advertising I suppose.

The truth is USAC operates as a business entity like any other
business that sees the cycling as a market, and vigorously fights for
more market share in a goal to own 100% of the market. ANy bicycle
racing events that are not under it's control are "competing entities"
for the racing market share. BTW, the gross market for bicycle racing
in NCNCA is ~$2million per a year if you look at race entry fees only.
(granted most of that money is eaten up by permits, police presence
etc...but STILL!)

In any case, I think we need a Northern California racing calendar
that goes back to some of the old goals of NCNCA. A site with a simple
fast loading calendar that just lists out all the events regardless if
they be Alley Cats, ATRA track races, USAC events, unsanctioned time
trials, Grand Fondos etc. Perhaps the site would allow the user to
self select the type of racer they are (ie setting a cookie) so when
they come back the site will only show them the events they are
interested in.

I'm willing to put my money behind developing a simple site. So if
anyone knows of a web developer that is cycling friendly and willing
to work on a contract basis towards this end, please email me
directly. If anyone also wants to contribute or make suggestions
towards having a calendar site that is agnostic of sanctioning please
email me as well.

cheers,
-kieran

NCNCA 14 to 22 year old racers -
In addition to the Northwest Camp in Portland that Jim Anderson mentions,
below I wanted to provide specifics on two opportunities

- for 17 and 18 year olds there will be a "Selection Camp" in Flagstaff, AZ
June 8-13. The top six riders will receive selection to the Tour de
l'abitibi in Rouyn, Ontario, Canada (see http://www.tourabitibi.qc.ca) as
well as free entry into the event. A second team will be composed of the
remaining highest rated campers. The Tour de l'abitibi is North American's
only UCI event where up to 156 17-18 year olds contest seven stages over six
days (July 16-22). Many Americans have not only placed well at this event,
many more have had a great racing experience. Please let me know if you
have any questions about l'abitibi.

- while you are encouraged to attend any one of the 13 road and MTB camps,
and there are plenty of options throughout the summer calendar (see
https://www.usacycling.org/regional-development-camps.htm) please contact me
if you have any interest or questions about the USA Cycling West Coast
Development Camp (July 1-6) please let me know. As of today, we have 26
spots remaining. Our coaching staff includes Matt McNamara (Sterling
Sports), Dan Smith (Sport Velo), John Cheetham (San Jose Track Juniors),
Steven Mielich (San Jose Bicycle Club Juniors) and Justin Morgan (Clovis
Training Criterium). You can also follow our Facebook fan page -

So if
anyone knows of a web developer that is cycling friendly and willing
to work on a contract basis towards this end, please email me
directly. If anyone also wants to contribute or make suggestions
towards having a calendar site that is agnostic of sanctioning please
email me as well.
cheers,

Jeff and I volunteer.

Believe it or not, something like what you describe is already on our development plan for Voost.  We could easily re-prioritize those features to the top of the list, especially if we have help describing how it should work.  Ultimately we are trying to build a community site where athletes (not just USAC, not necessarily just cyclists) go to find events, track competitors, and encourage their friends; some sort of combination of facebook, athlinks, bikereg and active.comOnline event registration and management is just what can potentially pay the bills - although under no circumstances will we require events use Voost for registration.

Does anyone have Kieran's contact information?  It's not in the email. Also, would anyone else like to contribute input onto how this system would work?  We have a pretty good idea about the obvious things, but as we have discovered, it's better to get feedback early.

best,

Jon (and Jeff)

Good Morning Everyone...

Advanced Racing Camp is NOT your run of the mill 'advanced' clinic...this is the
real deal. We'll put you behind a motor, at race speed, working on those hard
and soft skills that make ALL the difference in racing. Among the topics...

- Race Speed Pacelines and Echelons
- Gutter, Pack and Close Quarters Riding Skills/Drills
- Short Track Bracket Racing In Tight Quarters
- Team Tactics and Drills AT RACE SPEED (perfect that leadout!)
- Direct feedback from Larry Nolan and Matt McNamara on your individual
performance, strengths and areas for improvement. The clinic is only $100 for 5
hours of hands on instruction, with discounts for teams of 3 or more who
register. There are a few spots left and we'd love to have you participate!

Last year's clinics were very well received by all who attended and we are
currently working to secure UPGRADE points for attendees. This clinic is open to
Category 3 and above racers, or Category 4's who make a viable argument for
inclusion. The clinic runs from Noon - 5:00p at the Fremont Crit course (stevens
and 880).

Two quick updates for Nor Cal/ Nevada Coaches

1)      Level 3 coaches - The USA Cycling Level 2 “on-bike” skills clinic was rained out March 24 and has moved to Sunday, April 22.  The clinic will be held at Newark Junior High School.  Flyer on USA Cycling website (search under “level two skills clinic”).  Please contact me if you have any questions.

2)      This Saturday there is an opportunity to “steal” Matt and my coaching ideas.  We welcome all category coaches to come out to learn.  There are many clinics that call themselves “advanced” but we test riders limits like no other clinic around.  Listen, learn, and steal our ideas for your team, clients or for your own benefit.

Center Lines… What are they all about?

Sometimes when you are in the peloton and the road is broken up, dirty, full of holes, has water hazards and you can see for miles, you wonder why is the motoref always honking his or her horn. Sometimes it is a lot more than safety. When you read the following note from the CR at one of our more popular events, you will begin to see why the motos have to be aggressive. It is not only for your safety, but the very life of an event that they are trying to protect.

“Due to the difficulties with residents last year, the Race Director (RD) made it clear that, because he was not able to get full road closure, the center line rule would have to be rigorously enforced; otherwise, he would face more difficulty in the future, and it was possible that, if the center line rule was not enforced and residents complained to the permitting agencies , promoting this event next year would be jeopardy.

After the first wave, it became apparent that, in order to better enforce the center line rule to the finish, the RD had to put down tape to affect a center line from the finish to almost the last corners to define the center line as there was none. Consequently, there was not the number of center line violations at the finish during the second and third waves.â€

Some of you are wondering why they had to put down an artificial center line.  Basically it is because some riders believe that if there is no center line marking the center of the road, they can ride on the left side of the road. Those of you that tried it, found out that this is not true with reminders from the motorefs and/or relegation or worst.

So work with us. We are trying to not only to keep you safe, we are also trying to make sure you can continue to race.

Hey Folks,

The weather should be clear and over 70 degrees (F) this weekend at Hellyer Park.  Come on out for the Tax Day Match Sprints.  Cat 1-5, women and juniors.  Brackets will be 6 to 8 per timed group based on 200M times and other arbitrary factors.  Double elimination.  If time permits, we will do 500M TT and Kilo after the matches.  Oh yeah, ca$h prizes!

I would like to encourage juniors and women to attend.

Best,

Michael

Women Racers,

Don't forget to sign up for the Mariposa Women's Stage Race coming up May 11-13!

The race flyer is here: http://velopromo.com/mari-ent.htm

And registration is here: https://www.bikereg.com/Net/15832

This is the same race as the Kern County Women's Stage Race but it has been moved.  The overall format is the same.  But it is much closer than it was before.  And much cooler!  The average high in Mariposa for the month of May is 78!

So if you've done Kern before but it was too far to go or too hot, come on back and try it again!

If you've never raced Kern, give it a try!  The racing is hard, but the vibe is awesome!  Prizes are cash, plus everyone in the past has always received a shirt (usually nicer than the average bike race t-shirt) for finishing.  And there are special awards hand-made by Robert Leibold.

This is a unique race that we are lucky to have here in Norcal.  I don't know of any other event for women that is like it across the country.  There are categories for everyone--separate 1/2, 3s, 4s, 35+, 45+, and 55+.

We need your support for this race both to make it keep happening, but also to make the racing challenging and fun!

See you there!

Hi Folks,

I feel that this was an awesome event.  I really want to thank Mark Rodamaker for supervising, Eric for officiating, and Scott for handling the bell.  There were no incidents other than two slipped pedals by juniors.  I really liked doing the sprints, and I promise to put a few more of these on the schedule.  We had a really mixed group of riders.  There were sprinters in the 11s, and 10-12 year olds in the 26s.  The next event, I’ll have a separate warm up for juniors and will start earlier - I have a plan that should work.

I’m going to give the results, and make a few comments on rules and scoring at the bottom – if you so choose to read on.

We had 17 adults and 9 juniors!  We ran 2 adult brackets and two junior brackets.  The junior brackets were 10 -12 mixed, and 13 – 16 mixed.

We had a lot of questions about rules and scoring, and I intend to openly address a few items.  First, this was an ATRA (American Track Racing Association) sanctioned event – not a USA Cycling event.  ATRA has their won rules which are posted on their website at: http://www.raceatra.com/racing/track_rules.html.  Since USA Cycling is not insuring or sanctioning ATRA events – ATRA is - I will use ATRA rules for any ATRA sanctioned event that I direct and USA cycling for any USA Cycling Event that I direct.

For no reason at all, I prefer a ‘championship’ format (ATRA rule 11.3.3(a)) using double elimination format.  In future 2012 sprint events that I direct, the format will be double elimination unless posted.  Wikipedia defines double elimination as:

A double-elimination tournament is a type of elimination tournament competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches.”  This definition will be enforced in the next double elimination tournaments.

If two competitors go to the finals with each only having lost once, they will have tie breaker and the winner of the tie-breaker is the winner.

OK, back to ATRA vs. USA Cycling.  Below is an excerpt of the ATRA rules for Sprint events.  These are the rules that will be enforced at my ATRA events.  If a rule is not in the ATRA rulebook, then it does not apply.  *ATRA has no rules specific to juniors.

11.3.3 SPRINT

Track Sprints involve a series of races, each with a small number of riders. The number and composition of the races is organized by the Chief Referee to meet the needs of the racing program for the number of riders. The sprint rounds may be preceded by a flying start 200 meter time trial to seed or select riders who will take part in the sprint heats. Formats may include:
(a) Championship format - riders compete in qualifying and succeeding rounds in such a way that the fastest riders shall meet in the final race.
(b) Round robin format - each entrant competes against every other entrant. The winning rider of each pairing shall receive one point. The overall placings are determined by the number of points gained in all matches. If a rider does not complete the entire series of matches, then any points gained by or at the expense of that rider are canceled. In case of a tie, the tie will be broken in favor of the rider who:
(1) Scored the greatest number of points in the matches against the other tied riders; or,
(2) If still tied, has the highest placing in an additional sprint in which all riders who are still tied compete, or
(3) If still tied, wins a final match of the tied riders
(c) Exhibition sprints follow the format of championship sprints, but may vary in the number of competitors allowed in the qualifying and final rounds and in the distance of the sprints. Repechage rounds and the requirement that a rider lose twice before being eliminated may be omitted.
When rider seeding is based on a time trial, only bicycles that meet sprint standards shall be used.
Distance. Sprints are run over two laps on a track of 333.33 meters or greater or over three laps on a smaller track or as designated by the officals.
The starting position of each rider shall be decided by the drawing of lots. The rider drawing the inside position is obligated to lead at the start. Following the start, the leader may not perform a standstill for more than 30 seconds. If he or she does, the official shall require the rider initiating the standstill to continue the race. If the rider fails to continue, the starter shall stop the race, after a warning, and declare the other rider the winner of the heat. In a three or four-up race, the race shall be immediately rerun as a two or three-up race, without the relegated rider. A maximum of two standstills shall be permitted for each race. The rider on the inside of the track, unless overtaken, shall lead until reaching the pursuit line on the opposite side of the track or another point on the track as designated by the official before the start of the race. Should the race be run in two heats, each rider shall lead one heat. A further draw shall be made if a third and deciding heat proves necessary.
Stoppage. Once the start has been given and judged valid by the starter, the race shall not be stopped without a legitimate reason.
(a) During the slow part of the race, the starter may stop the race if a rider:
(1) Backs up more than 20 cm (8 inches) [1/4 wheel rotation with a 700c tire];
(2) Does a standstill on the blue band;
(3) Touches the track surface or the outside fence or railing;
(4) During a standstill touches an opponent or jumps his bike;
[The rider responsible shall lead the reride]
b) Should any rider suffer a mishap at any time during the race, a restart shall be signaled by the starter unless it is obvious that at the moment, the rider concerned had no chance to place. In a reride following a mishap, the starting positions of the riders are not changed.
(c) Should a race be stopped because of an apparent mishap that turns out to not be legitimate, the race shall be restarted without the rider at fault.
Before the sprint has begun riders may utilize the full width of the track, but must leave room on the right for riders to pass and avoid movements that could cause a collision, a fall, or force a rider off the track.
Once the sprint has begun (the riders are moving at full speed or near full speed):
(a)No rider may attempt to overtake an opponent using the blue band, either while passing or pulling out of a passing maneuver;
(b) The leader must always leave room on the right for other riders to pass. The leader is not obligated to leave room on the left, but may not enter the sprinters lane if it is occupied, except with a clear lead, and in no case may force an opponent off the track;
(c) If the leader is below the sprinters line, he or she must stay below the sprinters line until the finish and all following riders must pass on the right and outside the sprinters lane. However, the leader may come out of the sprinters lane if he or she is so far ahead that there is no hindrance to opponents;
d) If the leader is riding above the sprinters line, he or she shall make no abrupt motion to keep other riders from passing and may make no move to the right (whether abrupt or not) that could have caused a fall or that exceeds 90 cm. (same as the width of the sprinters lane). Following riders may pass on either side. The leader may move to the left into the sprinters lane only if the trailing edge of the leader's rear wheel is ahead of the leading edge of the front wheel of the following rider [relegation for foul riding]. There is no penalty at the finish if the lead rider accidentally drops below the measurement line or even onto the blue band.
Falls. A rider in a two-up sprint who intentionally causes another rider to fall shall be disqualified. A rider who falls while attempting an illegal maneuver shall be relegated. The wronged party shall be declared the winner without necessarily passing the finish line.
No-shows. If one rider in a two-up heat fails to appear, that rider loses the sprint and the other rider must put in an appearance on the starting line in order to be declared the winner, but need not cover the distance. The losing rider may compete in a subsequent ride.
Blocking. In a sprint with three or more contestants, a rider who is hemmed in at the bottom by other riders may not force his way out of the box, nor may a rider block or interfere with another rider [relegation or disqualification].
No rider may deliberately cause a crash disqualification]. Whenever such a situation is detected the race should be stopped, if not completed, and in any case shall be rerun without the rider responsible. In the case of an accidental collision before the sprint has begun, the race will be stopped by the starter and rerun with the original participants in the same starting positions.
In the case of a dead heat, the race will be rerun with only the riders who made the dead heat.

Best,

Michael
