I agree with Maurice. It takes a lot of planning and co-ordination to
put on a race. I use to think that the marathon fees were high.
However, when I compared the cost per mile, the marathon can be
cheaper than a 10K.
For example, one national event charged $60 and $20 for a marathon
and 10K, respectively. The cost per mile for the marathon was
$60/26.2 or $2.29/mile. The cost per mile for the 10K was $20/6.2 or
$3.25/mile. When you factored in that the marathoners also got a
better t-shirt and a finisher's medal, they made out "like a bandit."
