Blazers lose family member
Musselman Passes Away
PORTLAND, Ore., May 5 -- The Portland Trail Blazers announced that Assistant
Coach Bill Musselman passed away today at 2:45 a.m. CT from complications
from amyloidosis. He was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
"Bill was a valued member of our family," said Blazers President and General
Manager Bob Whitsitt. "He was always a competitor, always focused, whether
it was basketball, his children, his wife, or a fan who interrupted his
dinner for an autograph. He never uttered a word of self-pity, never said
'why me' or 'it's not fair.' "
Amyloidosis is a disease in which the liver produces an abnormal amyloid
protein that collects in various tissues, damaging them and interfering with
function.
"Bill was a man who lived life on his terms. There was no gray area with
Bill," Whitsitt said. "He exemplified the meaning of dignity of life. He
never complained about pain, never bemoaned his intrusive tubes or needles.
He pressed on for all of the life he could live. He will be sorely missed."
Musselman, 59, was in his third season with the Blazers. His son, Eric, an
assistant with the Orlando Magic said, "He was a great father, but more than
that, he was my best friend. It is a comfort to our family to know that he
was loved by so many. We will miss him dearly."
Bill is survived by his wife, Julie, and three children; Eric, Nicole and
Max. Funeral arrangements are pending.
