Dave a "Fly" is a teeny lock component. It fits in near the sear and
bridle. Each lock is slightly different. Fly's are typically VERY
small and thus difficult to photograph.

Go to members.aye.net/~bspen/percterm.html
and members.aye.net/~bspen/lockfunction.html. The site
has an excellent description of what the fly does and
very good photography so you can see exactly what is
being discussed.

Can someone tell me what the fly does, I have not seen one and I
can't find a decent picture of one, I know that it is a part of the
tumbler assembly but I don't know for what application.
Seasons Greetings
Dave
Thanks for your help guys. I've replaced the ignition with a 209 primer set up
and found
that there was some dirt in the bolt housing that may have been restricting the
firing pin.
The 209 primer firing pin does seem to have more gusto. I've hunted with a
Hawkens style
rifle before I purchased my inline and I do miss it. Iit's hard not to pass up
the use
of a rifle with a scope shouting up to 150 yards with very good accuracy.
Thanks Again,
Rod
I agree with both Greg and PJMarks. For Winter use I have always
thoroughly cleaned the oil out of the action of my various rifles,
including taking the bolts apart and making sure they are dry. A very
light coating of dry graphite (read pencil lead) on wearing surfaces
is sometimes helpful. Winter weather usually means dry air so you
aren't protecting against moisture rusting the internals of the gun.
Just make sure that if you bring it inside at the end of the day you
let it warm up inside a gun case. Otherwise moisture in the house
will condense on it. The old timers up here didn't bring their rifles
in at all, but left them in the cold on the porch. Of course that was
at a time when folks were more honest and you didn't have to worry
about someone walking off with it....
If you replace the rifle, consider a flintlock (as PJ suggested).
They are a hoot to shoot, and were used for a lot longer than bolt
actions have been around...
Have a great New Year!

It sounds like the bolt is hanging up somehow. If you are in cold weather don't use any oil, just clean and lubricate with WD40. This is what we did in the Army as the M16 has the same problem in sub freezing weather if there is any oil in the action. If oil is slowing down the stricker mechanism switching to 209 primers will have the same problem. Hope this helps.
I purchased a Ruger M70/50 inline about 5 or 6 years ago. I have had some
mis-fires that
have cost me 1 trophy buck and a number of other deer. Ruger had sent me a
replacement
firing pin spring and after that didn't work they me sent me the whole bolt
assembly. The
new bolt seemed to work pretty good for a while but then misfired again on me
this year
costing me a nice six pointer and then a spike buck. It does put a slight dent
and will fire if
I recamber the bolt. I'm pretty frustrated at this point and I'm going to
convert the ignition
to a 209 shotgun primer set up. I've used only the finest gun oils for freezing
temperatures and have purchased brand new primers a few times. I can't think of
anything
else to do but replace this rifle if I am to keep on having mis-fires. Does
anyone have have
any thoughts or similar experiences with this same weapon?
I do not shoot flinters, however I have had very good luck with
advice from local clubs. They are unfailing in their willingness to
help and their numbers are rife with deeply experienced shooters who
have experienced every problem imaginable...and then some. They can
also provide the sources for parts IF you need them.

Howdy,
Case hardening is a surface hardening technique. I would suggest
that you obtain a new frizzen...just to have a spare if you should
need it. Then try to reharden the old one.
"Kasenite" and similar products such as "Hard N' Tuff" are used
by, first, heating the part to a dull red heat, rolling or dunking
the part in the sand like compound, until a glassy, melted coating
covers it. The component is then brought up to a bright red heat and
quenched in clear cool water. This process can be repeated to give a
thicker coating.
Traditional Case Hardening is done by packing the soft iron or
steel parts in a cast iron box, together with a mixture of charred
bone meal, leather scraps or parings from hooves etc. The top is
wired in place and sealed with fireclay. The entire box is then
heated in forge or furnace, to a medium red heat for several hours,
after which it is removed, the wires clipped and the entire contents
dumped into clear cold water.
The quality of your flint and its shape can also be an issue. I
believe I would have started with the flint first, but if you had a
bad batch none would have been productive. Quality flint is not cheap.
Try the flints that did not work on another rifle and see if they
spark there.
Good luck...let us know how everything works out.
Merry Christmas,
Kertesz

The only thing I can think of to try is hardening the frizzen. Hang it on a wire and heat it cherry-red with an acetylene or propane torch and the drop it in used motor oil. Clean it up afterward and give it a try, should spark like a big dog after that.

My new Kodiak has the misfire habit.CVA said they or Gander Mtn. would
change it out.I'm gonna try Win. primers and leave the CCI 209's at
home.I see some posts regarding breech crud. For what it's worth I
bought a bottle of Zap at dollar store dipped breech plug in it and
the crud jumped off.Came out steril clean with the hole clean as a
whistle. It has no ammonia, wiper her clean and lightly oiled.I'm happy.

General carries a very clear brand of oil,10w30or5w30 don't matter.
If you want it a little heavier or thicker just add a little more
oil.If this ends up not working for removing the plastic don't throw
it away. It's still a good cleaner lubricant for your barrel and the
external parts of the gun and u can use it on other equipment like
lawn-mowers and such.

I just acquired a CVA sidelock (used) in excellent condition. The
previous owner suggests I use #209 caps which I purchased yesterday.
However, how do I use them? What I mean is the nipple I have in no
way looks like a match for the 209. Do I need to get another nipple
and if so what do I ask for in buying one?
I had some of the caps the previous owner gave with the gun but 9 out
of 12 did not fire and of course when number 10 fired off the gun was
pointed at the moon. 11 & 12 went off without a hitch and from those
first two viable rounds I am in love.
can you be a bit more specific in the amount of kerosene and when you
say light motor oil are you in reference to something like 5w30 wal
mart brand?

it with K-1 kerosene. It's pretty much the same as the stuff in the

I'm looking for a company that can do fine inletting on pistol
stocks and rifle stocks...in quantity. I'm of the opinion that it
takes a C-N-C machine. All the present kit guns are made in Italy
or Spain. I'm looking for an American source for stock inletting.
