Hello, I joined this group in order to glean as much info on black powder
shooting as possible. I am new to this sport and require a lot of information.

I aquired a Texas New Army .44 caliber revolver real cheap but it needs nipples.
The gun was imported by Richland Arms and I believe it was manufactured by
Palmetto in Italy. Does anybody have an idea what size nipples it takes and
where I might be able to obtain them?

Also, within the past week, I stumbled on what I thought were pretty good deals.
A Cabela's Confederate Navy in .44 for 104.00 NIB and a CVA Hawken in .50 for
225.00 used.

If I had the money right now, I think I'd buy a Pedersoli Jaeger, and, using the
picture you posted, I'd personalize the Pedersoli.

I like the looks of this rifle. The cock is unique too. It might be a nice rifle
to copy. It just looks cool. I just get bored and post things I find on forums.
German and Austrian rifles often have sling attachmemnts which I think is
practical. This rifle doe's not have the familiar stepped wrist of Jaegers but
it is German. The second one is most definately NOT like a Jaeger except for the
elaborate decoration. Jaegers could be found with longer barrels up to 36 inches
but the short barrels worked best in places like the dense Black Forest. I don't
particularly like real short barrels. I just really like this rifle and this
place is dead so here it is....

Ok I had to ask the expert (Markkw) on this question. Here is his response...

'For the ML, you may want to try "BB" size lead shot at 0.180" if you're going
to patch it (don't think it'll be easy) or better yet would be #4 Buck at 0.240"
if the groove depth doesn't exceed the pellet diameter it can be loaded without
a patch. Either way, you'll need to keep that little bore clean.'

He said he has not seen lead airgun balls in 25 years but I saw some tins of
Gamo lead airgun balls in .22 caliber and .177.

Here is info on air rifle diameter vs. rimfire. I would NOT try using air rifle
pellets in a blackpowder firearm.

wiggy,

I have an idea for you. If you are looking for roundballs there are lead .22
caliber air rifle balls. I don't know if they would work or not because air
rifles do not use patches. If the barrel is smoothbore they might work. I know
very little about air rifles. Otherwise you could use conicals if the barrel is
rifled.

I collect older guns 1900-1960 I received a newer .22 cal black powder Derringer
I never had a one before and was wondering about what the grain was to load and
also where a place was to purchase .22 cal balls I did a quick search and didn't
see.

i am sorry to hear of your situation.   I was a near full time caretaker of my
grandfather for some time ,and most people dont have a clue as to how it really
changes your life.   i wish i knew if you where near me( indiana0   i would try
to help you with her so you could have a little time for yourself.   It really
is important to care for you as well.   anyhow.   as far as selling your guns
are concerned,   i would list them here.   if that doesnt work,   i would try
selling to a pawn shop( you wont get what they are worth likely)    then local
gun shops,  although some dont specialize in muzzleloaders,   then
gunbroker.com, and auctionarms.com

i wish i knew what you had i could well be interested.

thanks and good luck,

There are lots of other nice things too. I liked the Wolfgang haga rifle and
John Manton rifle at the bottom. The 1861 colt prototype too. Heck, it's fun to
look at them anyway. I could never afford any of these treasures.

I just picked up a Pedersoli Kentucky flint .45 at my local gun shop, used,
well, they sold it as used, looks like it was never fired to me and it's in
excellent condition ... anyway I've searched the net for ball diam. and powder
loads for this and have come up empty handed ... sort of that is ... Pedersoli
recommends 40 grains powder, a .445 ball with a .10 patch. I have loads of .15
patches I use with my Hawken and I'd like to use them in this rifle, anyone know
what the right size ball would be for a .15 patch? Also 40 grains of powder
seems low, my .50 Hawken uses 90 ... anyone have any experience with the
Pedersoli Kentucky rifle? I could not find a user manual on line either ...
Pedersoli does not offer them as downloads ... anyone have a PDF version to go
with my new gun??

I wasn't actually looking for anything when I stopped in to the shop ... but
they had this Pedersoli in the "bargain" rack for $160.00 and could not pass it
up ... sometimes you get lucky ...

   Thanks ...

for a .15 patch? Also 40 grains of powder seems low...

Congratulations on your new acquisition! That sounds like a great deal,
especially for one in such good shape.

In my opinion, if you've had experience shooting a Hawken, then the lack of a
User Manual is not an insurmountable obstacle. I shoot a .45 flinter with a
Green Mountain barrel, and have had success with .445 balls patched with .010 as
well as .440 balls patched with .015. I have some .437 balls I haven't tried
yet, but will start with .018 patch and see how it works on the target.

Some fabrics are much more densely woven than others, and therefore what really
matters is the thickness when crushed, which is its condition when rammed down
the barrel. The "slip fit" micrometer measure that works with sheet metal is
less handy with patch material. So three different fabrics that "slip fit
measure" .018 come out to be .013, .014 and .016 when you "crush fit measure"
them. This doesn't imply that you torque the mike to the point where the
threads are damaged and it needs to be recalibrated.....

As for powder charge, 40 grains might be the best for paper targets, but for
hunting deer more muzzle energy and a flatter trajectory is required. I proofed
my own rifle barrel with 90 grains of FFFg with one patched ball, so I know
it'll take up to that, but I seem to get the best consistency on target with
about 65 grains. Presumably Pedersoli proofs its barrels as well; I believe
it's mandated by most European nations.

All the best,

Ken

Try a .440 ball with that patch, I think you'll find 40grs 3f Goex or
Swiss enough, just shoot it some and see how you like it. Don't try the fake
powders in the flinter you won't like it.

Thanks ...

Drifter

Here's info on an 8 bore underhammer rifle. It neglects mention the use of
hardened ball for Forsythe rifling. These would have to be made yourself if you
wanted to get them right. True Forsythe rifling used a thin patch or no patch at
all and there were different variations of it. What is claimed to be Forsythe
rifling often is not. It's a real good notion regardless.

http://underhammers.blogspot.com/

Besides the double barreled cape guns for use in Africa there were double
pistols for protection. Two shots are definately better than one in a dangerous
situation.

Here is another form of double rifle. The man says it was invented in the early
1600's. The swivel breech flintlock.

And an early Browning "repeating" plains rifle that uses a sliding magazine like
kinda like a loading block. It was originally an underhammer rifle.

http://antiquesandthearts.com/Antiques/AuctionWatch/2001-06-12__12-06-50.html

There was the Revolutionary War British Ferguson breechloading flintlock rifle
and the Civil War breechloading percussion rifles. Here is an article about
making a breechloading flintlock pistol by an M.D.
  http://www.ctmuzzleloaders.com/ctml_experiments/breechml/breechml.html

He sent me this link of interest. I already knew of the Norwegian underhammer
design but didn't understand the importance at the time.

http://www.hbsa.fsnet.co.uk/resources.htm

I think a breechloading percussion target rifle would be better because paper
patched bullets would not be deformed upon loading thus increasing accuracy. I
don't see how it would hurt hunting either as long as it was allowed in the
state regulations. For normal deer hunting range the .54 caliber rifle shoots
flatter though. It is the ideal deer caliber for roundballs in my opinion. Now I
have gone in one compleate circle.

This is what I've been thinking about lately and I always end up exactly where I
started.
