I was reading about 4 bores and their use in Africa. Only 4 roundballs
can be made from a lb. of lead for this rifle thus the projectile is
1/4 lb. The recoil can be astonishing. I did the math. Huge roundballs
make pretty good holes too. Here is a video of one being shot. For
every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Yipes!

I'd like to know if there are any links to period pictures of Capotes
in N American during our time period.

Not modern day sutler pics but period renderings of Capotes 1700 to 1800.

I've noticed on the Germain portraits he has a Canadian Farmer and a
Brit soldier. On the soldier there 'appears' to be vents or gathered
pleats at the back much like a period coat instead of the designs
found in today's capote patterns.

Any info out there on this?

You could try to remove the nipple and with a nipple cleaning wire spoon
feed some black powder into the chamber. It will not take that much powder.
Put the nipple back with a primer and fire. It will at least clear the
muzzle. It has worked for me several times.

turning altogether), you can pull the ball out with the ramrod. Sometimes
you might need a ramrod gripper (don;t use pliers) or a T-handle on the
other end of the rod.

Did you try a ball puller or co2 discharger? Removing a breechplug can be
tricky, so I would try everything else first. Is this a sidelock or an
inline?

I have the process down for compressing the feather spring and main
spring on a Brown Bess lock, but can someone give me the idiot's guide
to compressing the Sear Spring?

I've used needle nose pliers but is there a way to compress the Sear
Spring better than needle nose? (I'm always fearful the needle nose
pliers will damage or over compress the sear spring)

How did the ball get stuck?

If you forgot to put powder down you can remove the nipple and put a few grains
of powder in the nipple hole, reinstall the nipple, make sure the ball is
seated, cap it, point it in a safe direction and shoot it out.

I'd recommend plugging the touch hole, stand the barrel up, fill it with oil,
put it in a closet and forget about it for a week. Pull it out and use the ball
puller.

Or if you double wadded it and it is stuck part way down the barrel make up
a ball puller that will go either all the way through the ball or most of the
way, so that you can get good purchase on it , hook the handlle of the puller
through something that will alow you to use it as a slide hammer and give it a
few firm taps to see if it will move, if it does keep going .If it does'nt move
but the puller stays firm in the ball try harder. ( worked for me on a number of
occasions )

Cheers

Have you tried the Silent Ball Discharger from TC? It works well for me.

( worked for me on a number of
occasions )

First off is it an inline on a side lock?

How did the ball get stuck?

If you forgot to put powder down you can remove the nipple and put a few grains
of powder in the nipple hole, reinstall the nipple, make sure the ball is
seated, cap it, point it in a safe direction and shoot it out.

AS I recall, this pistol takes a .490 round ball, a .010 pillow tick patch, lube
of your choice the less greasy if you are shooting and loading at the same time
and about 20 grains of 3f, and a number 11 cap, the cva nipple is junk, I always
switch mine for Uncle Mikes nipples but there are many good ones out there.

Help this helps

I recently bought my first BP gun, a CVA Hawken .50 caliber single
shot percussion pistol with 9 3/4" barrel. I didn't get a manual with
it. The CVA web site doesn't mention pistols at all.

My local dealer tells me there are several different "50 cal" size
balls available for different guns.

Does anyone have this pistol and know:

recommended ball size

recommended powder type (FFF?)

recommended powder charge

many thanks,
brian in NH

Hello all,
I am planning to hunt sika deer with muzzleloader. I have
been hunting these deer for 2 years and find them hard to put down. I
hit one with a 20gauge and it ran 80 yrds before it fell. The area
where i hunt is VERY thick. Visibility is 10 feet at best when on the
ground. Tracking is very difficult. Although i have not lost a deer
yet i have been with people that have. I am planning to buy the cva
wolf magnum and using 444 grain pure lead HP in 50 caliber. Any
suggestions would be appreciated.
