Alright, I take back my comments on here about the
perfect roundball deer rifle. A .58 caliber with a
1:116 twist rate is not a good idea. It would be fine
with a Forsythe rifled barrel using hard cast balls
with a wad behind except for the extreme recoil
generated. Pure lead roundballs would deform at high
velocities and thus penetration would decrease. Pure
lead roundballs have amazing penetration but only at
lower velocity. Hardened balls won't deform easily and
will plow thru bone. Such a slow twist rate would
allow much more of a powder charge to be shot
accurately but with lesser powder charges accuracy
would suffer. What was I thinking? Thank God for
people patient enough to explain. A .54 caliber with a
moderate twist rate (1:70 or so) using pure lead balls
and a patch is a much better choice. It was stated
that such a rifle would shoot flatter out to normal
range. A vast majority of deer are taken under 100
yards. Larger balls have more energy out to a longer
range than smaller balls but have more of an arched
trajectory and require more powder therefore unneeded
recoil will be felt. Most agree that a .54 is ideal
for deer. I read somewhere a long time ago that .52
was the minimum practical caliber for deer and I stand
behind that still. This is the end of my quest for the
perfect deer rifle.

Hello George,
Thank you for your reply, I have tried everything that you suggested,
with My CVA, dropping the powder charge made it come around, then like
an idiot, I sold the gun.
My pedersoli, would not shoot, but then last week, it also came
around, you tell me??
I have tried 777, thought the gun was going to blow up, it cracked
like a rifle, moder rifle that is.
I have been muzzle loading shotguns, for over 40 + years now, but when
my late wife died, it erased my memory, wow, would not wish this on my
worst emeny? Moving three times and also lost a lot of records, books.
Look forward to writing to you again, but I am not much with these
machines, Thanks, John

Love BP shotguns. Try this: equal volume of shot and black powder. If
you are using 777, you will have to cut back on the powder a bit.
Put in powder, over powder wad or 2 overshot wads. Next is a lubed
felt wad. Use your favorite lube or water if you are trap shooting.
Next, put down another overshot wad on top of the felt wad. This keeps
the bottom layer of shot from being impressed into the felt wad. Now
put your shot in. Lastly, put down your overshot wad. You can put a
pinhole in it to lessen air pressure in it as you ram it home. Make
sure that it is compressed to a moderate amount. No need to throw the
ramrod down the barrel as sometimes seen. Try this loading style and
let me know if any improvement.

I have had any number of muzzleloading shotguns through the years,
having suffered the lost of my late wife a number of years ago, I
found that my short term memory was wiped clean!!
Having a new CVA 12 double, which threw doughnut patters, real bad
ones at that, I could not remember what I had done years before, if
only I could find a copy of VM Starr's book, the muzzleing shotgun,
I had lost mine. I tried everything, nothing worked, then I dropped
the powder charge 10 grains, wow, what a pattern, 42 number six
shot in a soda can at 30 yards.
This gun was a keeper, stupid me, sold it, got a Pedersoli 10 ga
with screw in chokes, nothing would shot in it!! Last week I got up
to the gun club, tried 100 gr of prodex 2f, 6 thin card wads and 52
pellets in a gallon jug at 30 yards, oh yes, full choke.1 5/8 Oz
shot.
I also have a Pedersoli (Cabelas) 12 ga, nothing will shot in this
gun either, nothing!!
I have tried plastic wads, no good, 1/2" felt wads, no good. 1/8"
oiled felt seems to work good, or just thin cardboard wads stacked
up to make them 5/32" I believe. VM Starr's book is on the internet
by the way.
Yes, each muzzleloading shotgun is a story onto it's self. thanks
much, John

I found with mine that plastic wads were terrible and
blew holes in my pattern.

I switched to cardboard wads I cut from corrigated
cardboard. Worked well.

I have seen the same. It seems that some folks have good experiences
while others don't. Their kits seem to leave a lot to be desired, but
then they aren't $450 worth of parts from Track of the Wolf or
Pecatonia. On the other hand, I have been told by several people that
the barrels are equal to or better than Green Mountain's.

I have bought parts for my H&R underhammer from them, and other
miscellaneous supplies and have been satisfied with the service and
quality of their products.

I don't have personal experience with ML shotguns, but what I have
read is that they are often critters with their own minds. What works
for one won't work for another.

Having said this, what does the pattern look like? I understand that
a donut shows that the wad is being shoved through the cloud of
pellets and means the powder charge is too great. A wad of crumpled
paper may be the answer if lowering the charge gives too little energy
to the pellets.

Interesting problem. Let us know what you find out. I have been
kicking around the idea of a ML shotgun and everything I can learn
about them is a gift.

I have been into muzzleloading for 40+ years now and still leanring!
Having trouble wworking up a pattern for a pair of Pedersoli 12 and 10
gauge shotguns. I had a CVA 12 ga double, choked mod & mod, it put 42
pellets in a soda can at 30 yards. My pedersoli, will not do this, why?
Any ideas, pedersoli, are screw in chokes, CVA was fixed choke. I
have adjusted powder charge to get a pattern in the CVA, but pedsrsoli
does not seem to respond. Soon as it gets warmer, will got to gun club
and try more loads. I follwed the directions in VM Starr's book, it
made the CVA shoot like a modern gun, but pedersoli does not seem to
respond.
Also looking for ML shotgun shooters in Rochester, NY area to shot
with,, exchange ideas with, thank you, John

You might try Deer Creek Products at 1 (765) 525-6181. They sell an
Ethan Allen pepperbox as well as several other types of guns. The
Ethan Allen name, just like the Hopkins & Allen and several others,
has been sold to and manufactured by various companies. Now it
resides with Deer Creek, and their products are available for a very
modest price.

-Thanks for the replies. I've never heard of Midway USA,but I will
try them. I'm also going to call Numrich tomorrow as they don't have
Hoppes guns listed in their on-line catalog. I doubt that Hoppes was
the manufacturer of the guns. It's a short nipple. I have to check
the thread size,but I believe it's a 28.......Jim.

What is the thread size and total length of the
nipple?

I find it hard to believe Dixie doesn't have something

First time post here....
I've got a pepperbox (Ethan Allen by Hoppe's),36 cal. Does anyone
know where I can get nipples for this gun? I tried Dixie Gun Works
and they don't have them (said gun was too old and haven't been made
since the '70's). Hoppe's doesn't list guns at all on their web site.
Does anyone have any info on these guns? Thanks,Jim.

I need to find lock boxes for our Brown Bess muskets(60" long)for air
travel to Puerto Rico for the reenactment of the Seige of San Juan.
Does anybody have a source? I would prefer to rent or make them over
buying. We are a reenactment group depicting a British Revolutionary
war unit.

Life's journey is not about arriving at the grave in a well preserved body, but
rather sliding in sideways, totally worn out, screaming - "HOLY COW MAN, WHAT A

I'm a bit further south, in Toledo. I get to Washtenaw and points
north several times a year.
