I just aquired a CVA Hawken St. Louis .50 from a friend. I was
wondering if there is a source for matching the serial number to
the manufacture date? Or, is the serial number itself coded with
the year? Thanks for any help.

Anyone know of a place we can go shooting for cheap/free? I can't see
spending 10 bucks a person to not shoot that much.

Hi again Mike,

I shoot 80 grains FFg for both the .62 and the .56 - I also shoot
80 grains in my .54's, just seems to work well for me. I do have
one .54 (it's a Renegade) that likes 100 grains with a 425 grain
Buffalo bullet though...

I haven't tried plastic shot cups, not sure I'd want to in the
flintlock but might give it a try in one of the percussion guns. If
you decide to try it please post your results, ya got me
curious. :o)

I agree the Bess would make a real nasty wound, I was surprised
at how effective ANY roundballs are. When I first started shooting
blackpowder guns, I enjoyed the ritual of patch and ball but wasn't
convinced a .50 would really be enough. So I bought a .54. Then I
saw how much that soft lead expanded when it hit a critter, and knew
the bigger caliber wasn't necessary.

Don't get me wrong - I like the idea of a .62 or .75 caliber deer
roller, but I also like the idea of taking a deer cleanly with a
smaller caliber. I want, one day, to have a nice little .40 caliber
flintlock longrifle, because .40 is the minimum caliber for deer and
the maximum caliber for small game in my state. A .40 would be a
rifle could be used for anything.

Having said all that, I still want a Brown Bess. :o)

Mike,

If I get a deer in the next couple of weeks I will take pics of the
entrance and exit wounds on the deer. I'm sure the exit wound will be
MUCH larger than the entrance wound. This should be a pretty good
representation of what kind of wound the Rev War soldiers received.

Hi Mike,

I don't have a Bess either, although I'd like to some day. I have a
flintlock fowler made by TVM that I totally love, it's 20 gauge. I
also have several Renegades, one of which is .56 smoothbore (about 24-
28 gauge).

Like you, I was surprised at how accurate the smoothbores can be
with a roundball. Also like you, I had trouble getting patched .600
balls down the bore of the fowler and .55 balls down the .56. Then
somebody told me to try loading roundballs in my smoothbores the same
way I would load shot, and that has worked well for me.

I tried cards and fiber-cushion wads, and that worked well but you
do have to lube the latter for best results. I like to soak them in
melted shortening and store them in baggies.

For the most part, I have switched to the Wonder Wads and don't use
patches at all in my smoothbores. I learned about Wonder Wads because
I also have a T/C New Englander in 12 gauge, and it has screw-in choke
tubes. I found the cards and fiber wads don't work so well with choke,
so I went to Wonder Wads for that gun (I use that gun for small game
and turkey, not roundball).

I load the roundballs just like I would a load of bird or buck
shot - powder, Wonder Wad, roundball, Wonder Wad. It's real easy and I
see no difference in accuracy. Ox-Yoke makes the Wonder Wads, and I
think T/C makes some too. There may be others. I would recommend
giving them a try, I use them for practically all of my smoothbore
shooting anymore.

Hope this helps -
Mark

I am very new to these smooth bores-- I don't have a Bess, but i did get a 20guage smooth bore Green Mountain barrel for my TC Renegade stock-- it measures .615 and it was really too tight with the ox-yoke patches i had-- I had to pound the first .600 ball down to the powder with a piece of lighter wood...I shot three or 4 with t shirt material for a patch after putting a gas card and a fibre wad down first.  I was very surprise to hit near the point of aim at 100 yards... I will try more shot and even some #1 buck (.30) this week... any tips...???Mike

Muzzleloader season here in Ohio is December 27 - 30. Luckily my call
schedule at the hospital works out so I can go every morning early
when I get home from call. 4 days left for me for deer season to bag
one with my Bess. That deer tag is getting more expensive each day!!
Hope everyone with a Bess gets a deer this year.

Hi group.Just joined the group and this is my first post here.
I am needing some information how to heat treat a trigger for my repro
Remington New Army .44.

I can make the trigger in my little machine shop but I am not sure how
to heat treat or case harden the trigger.I will mill the trigger out of
a piece of oil hardening drill rod.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks and God Bless.

Hi Kees- Thank you for the kind words. The two Lyman triggers should be easy to switch out. I too prefer their single trigger as it has a nice rebounding spring in it that keeps it from flopping around like the single English style trigger that is just pinned in. Because of this the trigger lever is always in direct contact with the sear for a nice trigger pull with no creep.

Greg,

I just found your website and looked through the catalog:

http://restorationfirearms.com/OnlineCatalog.html

Awesome looking work, Pard! For those of you who haven't seen his
work, this is definitely worth looking at.

The trigger question I have is, would it be possible to mount the Lyman
Trade Gun single trigger on my GPR? I am not overly fond of the double
set trigger but before I spend money on a single I would like to know
if it will work.

Thanks,
-Kees-

Rob,

You might contact Siegrist Gun Shop, 8752 Turtle Road, Whittemore, MI
48770. His price list includes reboring muzzleloader barrels for $140.

The question is, why do you want to do this? What type of gun is it?
It might be cheaper to get a smoothbore barrel fitted. If the rifled
barrel is still in good shape, you would then have the option of
switching to whichever barrel you want at the time.

Let us know how you do!

I had the same promblem at the beginning of this season with my new
muzzleloader. I switched to the Shockwave bullets by thompson Center
that made all the difference for me.

I'm shooting a 250 grain bullet and using 150 grains of triple seven
(pellets)

Very true.

Muzzle loaders are basically 150yd guns on a good day, and I would
never shoot at game past 100 yards regardless. If I can shoot a 3"
group at 100 yards with a muzzleloader I'm a happy camper.

Hi Michael, There is an old saying that we had in the Army- a rifle is only as accurate as the shooter behind it. Knight rifles are very accurate, but then so is a .32 caliber flintlock using round balls. Barrel quality is as important if not more so than the projectile, which is why I use Green Mountain barrels. In the black powder game there are many more variables effecting accuracy as compared to modern cartridge guns. First and foremost is powder fouling in the barrel followed by the amount of the powder charge for a given load. Another problem is deforming the front of the projectile in the loading process with a ramrod which is impossible to detect once the gun is loaded, or after it has been fired. Gas sealing around the projectile when it is fired also comes into play. Muzzle loaders are basically 150yd guns on a good day, and I would never shoot at game past 100 yards regardless. If I can shoot a 3" group at 100 yards with a muzzleloader I'm a happy camper.

Hello everyone,

Is there really any truth the the advertisement that Knight Muzzleloaders are the most accurate?  And what, exactly, is their 100 yard guarantee?

I have a Traditions Pursuit.  Last year I shot Pyrodex and Lock n Loads... This year I tried Triple 7 with Lock n Loads and PowerBelts.  I couldn't get anything consistent with the PowerBelts under 5".  So, I'm going back to Lock n Loads or try some of the less-known bullets such as Dead Center.

Has anyone had any experience with Dead Center bullets or any of the others who advertise more accuracy from non-mass-produced bullets?

Thanks,

Try the T/C Shock Wave 250 gr sabot with 100 gr of Pyrodex Select. Use a dry bore - no lubricant.

Hi Mark,
The only sight I use is the bayonet lug for a front sight. At 50
yards the lug covers a 3" bullseye perfectly so I know I am on
target. It works well for me. I do have my sights set on a 50 Caliber
Pennsylvania long rifle though. It's a beautiful gun and not nearly
as heavy as the bess. The nice thing about a 70 grain load in the
bess is you get a clean burn each time with plenty of umph behind the
ball. Even after 6 or 7 shots I dont have that much residue to clean
out of the bore. Makes life nice that way.

Well, the tall tang screw idea sounds okay, but the "practice,
practice, practice" isn't always an option. I wish it was. I do
enjoy burning powder, but I don't have a lot of free time. I have
found that I can do okay if I shoot regularly, but when I can't
shoot for a while I get rusty. The obvious answer is practice more
just before hunting and I do, but that just doesn't seem to me like
the best way to do things. Far better, to my way of thinking, to
hunt with a set up that I can shoot well consistently. It is the
very reason I still use a sight with yardage pins on my bow. I
cannot maintain consistent accuracy aiming instinctively unless I
shoot all the time. Since my work and family responsibilities won't
always allow me to do that, I use a sight.
The good news is now I have an excuse to peruse the TOW catalog
looking for a tall tang screw :o)
Thanks John -
Mark

Ahhh, a rear sight on a smoothbore fowler or Bess. Why not do what the
colonials did, install
a TALL tang screw and orient the screw slot to form a sight. They also had
their guns built
with a small "lump" at the appropriate spot on the barrel, and then file a
shallow groove or
"ears" into the lump for their windage settings (right and left alignment that
is!).

I have personally set a few tall screw heads for folks, with the idea that it
doesn't help so
much with proper elevation as much as it does for the aforementioned windage.

The other option is practice, practice, practice, something most of us don't
mind doing
anyway. Nothing like the smell of burning GOEX in the morning...

Good luck, keep making smoke, and take a non-muzzleloader shooting once in
awhile!

John
