a good brass brush and some rust remover like navel jelly works
really well, be shure to rinse out the rust remover.
If it were left that way for a long time the rust may have left
pits inside so you might want to check that out.
after its dry oil it good with gun oil. WD-40 is good but not for
long term use, WD means water displacment and it will evaperate in a
short time.
