<<Meat Pie Triathlon Set as La. State Tri Club Challenge>>
From Elizabeth Cassano
Hey, guys, the Sept. 25th Meat Pie Tri is just around the corner and
there's lots of excitement about this year's event. Back by popular
demand and our state tri spirit, the second Annual Louisiana State
Tri Club Challenge is set to take place at Meat Pie. BRTri has
bragging rights as Club Challenge Champion for only a few more weeks.
Will they defend their 2004 title is the big question?
Step it up, rally the troops, bring the competition, come for the
fun, enjoy the meat pies and challenge the orange and blue. RRTC,
Twin Cities, Lake Charles, Team Earthquake, Sunrise, Bayou Gators,
Meat Pie Tri Club, GNO Tri, Team Gecko, do you guys accept the
challenge?
Please forward the below rules of the State Tri Club Challenge on to
club members. There have been several changes made to the 2005
Edition of Rules that I think you will like. Please contact us with
any questions. Remember, too, that Meat Pie is also a 2005 Regional
Club Championship event -- these are two separate "competitions."
Back by popular demand and the competitive spirit of our Louisiana
triathletes is the annual Louisiana State Tri Club Challenge. It's a
fun, challenging opportunity for state clubs to compete against one
another, awarding points in such a fashion that every finisher will
make a difference.
Points, Participation & Prizes
Every club member's finish counts, so rally the troops! The club
that earns the most total points will:
--be crowned the "2005 Louisiana Tri Club Challenge Champion"
--receive the 2005 Club Challenge "Cup" Award
--earn bragging rights for one year!
--and, every finisher on the winning club's team will receive a
special recognition t-shirt including the Club's name and status of
2005 Challenge Champions (t-shirts will be printed post race with the
winning team's name and presented in the weeks following the race)!
Points will be awarded as follows:
Top 3 Male and Female Overall Top 5 Male & Female in each
Age
Group
1st = 10 points 1st = 6
points
2nd = 8 points 2nd = 5
points
3rd = 6 points 3rd = 4
points
4th = 3 points
5th = 2 points
Overall Masters and Grand Masters
1st = 8 points
Relay Division (must be composed of 2 of 2 OR 3 of 3 club members to
score placement points*)
1st = 6 points
2nd = 5 points
3rd = 4 points
*Only teams composed of club members from the same club will be
eligible for placement points. However, if a club member participates
with a non-club member(s), the member will be awarded 1 point for
that team's finish.
New in 2005
Any club member that is on the injured reserve list or chooses not to
race for any reason, but wants to participate with their Club in the
Challenge will be awarded one point for their spirit of volunteerism
on race day.
Each finisher will be awarded either one point for finishing or
points for placement in his/her respective age group or relay
division.
Our tri trust is based on your honesty and commitment to uphold the
highest standards of Louisiana triathlon race directors and
participants. The club challenge will rely on the club president (or
representative) to abide by the "honor system." Any member or club
found to be playing by any system other than the honor system will be
DQ'd from the challenge.
Club members must include their tri club name on their registration
form. If it is not included on the registration form, the individual
will not be assigned to a club. Therefore, the club they are
representing will not be awarded any points in their honor.
Notes
--Not all participants will be affiliated with a club, therefore
should these participants place in the above ranks, there will be no
points awarded to a tri club.
--Any club member that receives a penalty for disobeying (or
breaking) USA Triathlon rules will not be eligible for placement
points, only one point for finishing!
--Complete club rosters must be submitted to Race director by
Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005.
--Should a member realize they have not indicated their club's name
on the registration form - they must notify the race director
immediately! No changes/additions will be made after Saturday, Sept.
24, 2005.
--Race-day registrants will not, again, will not be allowed to
participate in the club challenge.

Here's a long, but humorous race report of the Meat Pie Triathlon

makes you feel like a super-hero. Her book is great to give as a gift

I had several attachments included in a previous note I thought went

Cherbonnier of Club South Runners sent notes on a half-marathon
training program going on via Varsity Sports in Baton Rouge and a
flyer on a run for the zoo in the capital city. There was also a note
on a swim meet sent from some Team Earthquake triathlon team members.
Sorry, but it appears attachments are getting harder to send in group
emails.
Congrats to all those who raced and directed summer-long club week-
day running events. This is a powerful service to the fitness
community, especially to younger runners preparing for high school
cross country seasons.
The multisport rankings for Louisiana residents racing Louisiana
events are coming along fine for the next annual edition of the
printed Louisiana Multisport Report. If you're concerned about
whether you're accurately ranked, email me your story. The printed
copies are sent free, too, but you have to keep me updated with your
current address if you want one. Otherwise, I hope to again have lots
of copies out at fitness retailers and health clubs around the state.
Don't forget, this is a great opportunity to advertise for your event
sponsors or fitness retailers that have supported cycling, running,
multisporting and all our sports.
I am hoping to have rankings of adventure racers and off-road races
as well as competitive cyclists again. If anyone has data on
Louisiana competitive swimmers, that would be great to include in
this publication again. The issue is due out in early 2006.

Friday afternoon, we will party on the beach till packet pick-up.
Meet us out there. Saturday after the race, we will meet around the

Sept. 10 Ride Set for Amite
From Bob Hodges
The Northshore Crescent City Cyclists ride for Sept 10 will start
from the town of Amite. This ride will feature longer distances than
typical to provide some more training miles for local riders that are
getting ready for the Six Gap Century, the CCC Fall Century, and the
MS Tour. There will be ride options of approximately 40, 50, 65, and
85 miles. At least 90 percent of the ride will be in rolling hills
and I have routed in what I believe are the best roads in the area.
There will be at least one store stop for the 40 and 50 mile-routes,
two for the 65-mile route, and three for the 85-mile route. If you
ride the long route, expect to do between 2,500 to 3,000 feet
of climbing. The ride will start at 7 a.m. from the park in downtown
Amite off of Louisiana Highway 16 adjacent to the railroad tracks.
Hope to see y'all there.

"If your happiness depends on what somebody else says (or does), I

Sobering best describes what south Louisiana and especially the
greater New Orleans faces in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. The
fitness focus fades amid incredible personal tragedies heard in the
wake of the storm. My prayers are with all those who continue to
fight the hurricane. I have to say, though, it's times like these
when being fit makes folks much more capable to help folks.
For those of you who want to help folks recovering from the
hurricane, the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and numerous other long-
established charities are geared up and ready to let you get
involved. I would urge you to be careful about to what and to whom
you give donations. I understand, too, there is a great need for
blood donations. If you live in areas where "refugees" are coming, I
urge you to go down to the shelters and volunteer to help and see in
the eyes of so many at these shelters the tragedy that took place in
Greater New Orleans area. Perspective is so much!
Unfortunately the storm did cause the cancellation of the Girl Power
Triathlon and Premier Event Management's youth triathlon.
Congratulations, though, to BRTri's youth triathlon that brought out
a full field of youngsters for the second annual event Roketkidz Tri
held in the capital city.

for the Meridian Omnium set Sept. 10-11 has been added to the NOBC
website at: http://www.gnofn.org/~nobc//2005/meridian_om.pdf
There have been some minor changes to the start times and course for
the Saturday afternoon criteriums.
By the way, it's time to start getting in your fitness event dates
for 2006's Louisiana Multisport Report. Some dates have been set, but
lots more regular/annual event dates have not yet been confirmed.
I'll be posting what dates have been claimed as I get them. For
publication and web postings, I would appreciate hearing from you
with the specifics of events in your area.
Congratulations to Monroe resident Baine Foote and his teammates of
the Herring Gas bike racing team. He was able to be a top finish at
the international Tour de French Guyana. I was hoping to have more
details and specifics on the international event that featured lots
of our Louisiana/Mississippi-based bike racing team, but didn't get a
report. Many on the American team suffered intestinal aggravations
that forced them to withdraw from the event.

Baton Rouge Goldenfliers Sets Road Race Dec. 17
From Dirk Harris
It's that time of year again!
Preparations are underway for the second Goldenfliers 5 & 10 Mile

prove to be bigger and better than the last. This year's race will
feature more than $6,000 in cash and prizes, and we expect to host
premier runners from around the nation (including possible
appearances by members of Hansons-Brooks Distance Project). In
addition to great prizes, terrific race packets and incredible door
prizes are guaranteed.
This year's race will be held on Dec. 17, 2005, and will again loop
the scenic & flat Baton Rouge lakes. I have attached a race flier
with additional details of the race. Information is also available
on our website, www.goldenfliers.com.
Whether you're coming to take your shot at the cash & prizes up for

"Three may keep a secret if two of them are dead." Benjamin Franklin
Routines are emerging in South Louisiana. The routines are different,
but they represent a progress that is good and helpful as the region
moves on and beyond the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Traffic is thick
in Baton Rouge and no doubt areas comparably close to New Orleans
like Houma and Lafayette; these towns were not designed to easily
accommodate double the population in a week or two.
And workout routines are emerging, though somewhat differently. In
Baton Rouge, for example, the weekday rides on the River Road were
tough with substantially more motor traffic using the route as an
alternative to other routes. But multisporters like most in the
region are working and working hard to create a new "normal" for life
in South Louisiana.
Hang in there, it's getting better and in my view it's getting better
at a faster pace than I imagined.
Jeff Diamond of Baton Rouge announced that the off-road duathlon
scheduled for the Hooper Road Park in the capital city area has been

Bike Races in Mississippi Cancelled
From Shane Hernandez
Due to Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath I feel it is prudent to
cancel the Meridian Omnium scheduled for Mississippi on Sept. 10 and
11. Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone the areas impacted by
the storm, especially our LaMBRA friends.
Bike Tour Based in Hammond Cancelled
From Marc Breecher
Regretfully, the Hammond Kiwanis Club has decided to cancel this
year's Tour de Tangipahoa. After a discussion by club members it was
determined that because of the ravages of Hurricane Katrina and the
aftermath of the storm that it is impossible to hold the Tour as
scheduled. In the past we have relied heavily on the generosity of
Albertson's, vendors who donated many items for our rest stops and
meals and others. All of these are now overwhelmed in their response
to the storm. Also, security from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's
Office and other agencies will not be available … all law enforcement
personnel are exhausted.
Furthermore, we cannot be assured that the path of the Tour de
Tangipahoa will be fully cleared of the tremendous amount of trees
and limbs that fell on parish roads. Finally we know that many of our
treasured riders are facing huge rebuilding tasks and some are even
being forced to relocate their families. In the face of all
these "negatives," the club decided that the Tour de Tangipahoa
simply could not be held.
Those who have paid for their registration in advance will be
reimbursed. Some of the checks we have received have not yet been
deposited and we will return this to you. We will also reimburse
those who had paid earlier and whose checks had been deposited.
However, we will not send any checks out until we once again have
secure mail service. We have not had mail service in Hammond in more
than 10 days.
This is not the end of the Tour de Tangipahoa! We are considering
possibly having a spring event if all goes well. We hope to continue
the great tradition that has been the Tour de Tangipahoa for the past
15 years. We thank you for your support in the past and for
understanding our predicament at this time. If you have any questions
or suggestions, let us know! The best to all of you.
LaMBRA Cancels Remaining Points Race for Competitive Cyclists
From Caroline Owen
We decided it would be best to cancel the remaining events left for
the 2005 LAMBRA season due to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As
far as LaMBRA (Louisiana Mississippi Bike Racing Association) and the
LCCS scoring goes, we will use the current standings in the LCCS cup
to determine the jersey and overall team winners for this year.
I regret that this is necessary but I think it is the fairest and
safest thing to do in light of our current situation in Louisiana and
Mississippi. I hope that everyone is safe and my thoughts prayers
are with everyone! Please feel free to contact me if you should have
any questions.
Meat Pie Triathlon Still Set Sept. 25
From Elizabeth & Don Cassano
Dear Friends of the Multisport Community,
We would like to take this opportunity to address the Multisport
community as a whole.
We hope this message finds all of you & your loved ones safe, strong
and determined.
There have been many questions regarding the upcoming Meat Pie Tri,
slated for Sept. 25 in downtown Natchitoches.
After reviewing logistics, hotel availability and the manpower
required for Meat Pie Tri, the City of Natchitoches, the sponsors and
the race directors of the event have made the decision to proceed.
Run Wild Event Management LLC, producer of Meat Pie Tri, will make a
donation of $2 per finisher to the Central Louisiana American Red
Cross Chapter.
Thanks to all of you for your support in helping us make this
decision. We look forward to seeing everyone on September 25.

Send Old Race Shirt to Help Hurricane Victims
From Lance Phegley
(lance@...)
The devastation from Hurricane Katrina is unbelievable and many of the
evacuees/refugees are being relocated to Houston. These people have
nothing - zero. We worked very closely with the Red Cross the last
time this happened in our area and the clothing was very much
appreciated.
We are asking event directors to ship their old event clothing to us
and we'll get it to the local Red Cross chapters so they can get the
clothing to those who need it most. We would also greatly appreciate
it if you would post the info below
(or a link to: http://www.insidetexasrunning.com/news/clothingdrive2005.html)
on your event web site. We are requesting assistance not only from
event directors but individual runners, cyclists, swimmers,
triathletes, etc.
The amount of clothing that is needed is really hard to fathom -
every item will be treasured.
Thousands of people in the Louisiana, Mississippi, and surrounding
areas were flooded out of their homes by Hurricane Katrina, many of
them losing everything -- home, cars, clothes, etc. Some 25,000
people were bused from New Orleans to Houston, where they will make
the Houston Astrodome their home for the foreseeable future.
Inside Texas Running is calling on all runners, cyclists, swimmers,
triathletes, or anyone else to lend a helping hand to those in need.
We're calling upon all race directors to donate the leftover or
unused T-shirts from their events. For those who have lost everything
in the floods, a nice, dry T-shirt would be greatly appreciated,
regardless if it was from an event they hadn't heard of or if the
shirt isn't from this year's event.
But this call for help isn't limited to just event directors.
Everyone has extra race T-shirts, shoes, pants, etc. sitting in their
closet -- now is the time to lighten your laundry load and get them
into the hands of people who could really use them.
T-shirts (and other clothing) can be delivered or shipped (postage-
paid, please) to the ITR offices at:
Inside Texas Running

Slowly but surely folks are creating new routines here in South
Louisiana. New Orleans Track Club staffer and event coordinator Chuck
George, who lived in Kenner, is doing great after retreating to
Lucedale, MS. He is already busy shuffling lots of events. "We are
more fortunate than many of our friends in New Orleans and some of
the surrounding areas, many of which may lose their entire home due
to the long duration of the flood waters. The water must be pumped
out, which may take quite a while. It is possible that
the water damage may make all of the homes unsafe and thus have to be
demolished. Some will return in a few weeks or months and some may
never return. We are very concerned for all of them. Looks to be a
day to day thing, " George noted in an email.
I"ve not yet heard from Metairie-based race director Bill Burke.
While his out-of-region events were not impacted, I am sure his staff
was impacted. It'll be interesting to see if he can proceed to
organize an Ironman-distance event in Louisiana after the storm.
I heard from Jairo Alvarez that the Louisiana Senior 2005 Olympics
Games -- scheduled for early next month -- was cancelled. But there
was a great high school cross country event last weekend in Baton
Rouge and no doubt lots of high schoolers got to vent some long pent-
up energy at the run. LSU has cancelled its Lake to Lake 10km set for
next weekend.
If anyone signed up for this event- they are giving a full refund.
Flint Creek Sprint Triathlon Cancelled in Mississippi
From Michelle VanPeski
I just updated our website with the cancellation info. We are so
sad -- for both the losses of our family, friends and athletes, but
also because we were so excited about getting this race off the
ground.
Please check www.TriMississippi.com periodically for updates
regarding the 2006 season. We're just going to skip to step two,
which is a season of races at Flint Creek, a Tri for Fun and USA
Triathlon-sanctioned sprint and Olympic distance races. We are also
planning a "Race to Rebuild", details yet to be determined, in which
all proceeds will be donated to the rebuilding effort.
Alternative Transportation Options Urged; Consider Bikes
From Tom Hanlan
(Editor's Note: With towns like Lafayette and Baton Rouge growing so
fast after the storm, lots of transportation options are being
considered. One option, of course, is helping folks safely ride bikes
in and through motor traffic. Word is there will be a special
legislative session to begin addressing some of the huge changesStorm
Katrina imposed on our region. There's been some internet chat as
noted below.)
I'd just add that contacting your local town/city council members,
state senators and representatives, federal Congressmen can only
help. I ready received a reply from one Congressional staffer that
his Congressman understood and was wading into the discussion/battle.
Several Council members are already advancing the same argument.
Best places to find who your elected representatives are and how to
contact them:
BR/local: www.brgov.com
State: http://www.legis.state.la.us/
And don't forget Gov. Kathleen Blanco made a written campaign promise
to "beef up public transit in Baton Rouge" now is the time to hold
her too it !
Federal: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/
Calls are good, personal e-mail is better, if you write, save it,
print it, fax it then use a stamp and mail it.
Please share your replies. FYI the Ascension Parish President already
spoke publicly that transit was the only viable solution to our
regions short term post Katrina congestion. There are some serious
discussions on moving some of New Orleans' RTA fleet to Baton Rouge.
There is also serious consideration to accelerating BR's
transportation 20-year plan and "skipping" BR Transit to concentrate
on a large bus fleet and a rail project.
FTA (Federal Transit Agency) has already circulated a memo saying some
transit could be 100 percent federally funded on an emergency basis.
I'd remind this group the FTA defines any sidewalk, bus shelter AND
bike path/trail within half- mile of a fixed transit route as a
transit improvement eligible for an 80 percent federal match.
From Meg Martens <margaretmartens@...>
I just got an e-mail from the editor at BR Business Report asking me
if my letter could be published in their letters section.
From Nancy Grush
You are on the right "track" both of you. A coordinated transit
system is the way to go. The "roads" only approach is short
sighted I think. If the city's planners do not consider transit and
focus only on roads, we will have missed a unique opportunity to get
a good, efficient transit system.
New Orleans Track Club Report; Members Asked to Email
From Chuck George
Many club members devastated from hurricane and flooding. It is
(estimated)that about 35 percent of our members (750 people) live in
the heavily flooded areas. Many may lose their entire home after the
flood waters are pumped out. Board members are scattered everywhere
as are our club members. More than likely, the club will not be able
to produce a road race until after the first of next year.
City and sponsor infrastructure rebuilding efforts is of more
importance, thus many of the services and support that we had grown
accustomed to will not be available for quite some time. The club
will survive as it is somewhat financially strong and will be here
for the long run. We are most concerned for our members and their
families.
I plan to send out letter to all members to announce a group meeting
about a month from now to see who is here, how each made out and
hopefully to know than none were victims of the storm or floodwaters.
Please feel free to e-mail the NOTC at NOTC@...
Or ChuckNOTC@... to let us know how you are, where you are (note
your full name with e-mail please). Info per each reply will be
posted on our website.
MS Tour for Cure Postponed
From Jessica Salter jessica.salter@...
During this time of confusion and devastation for the Louisiana,
Mississippi, and Alabama coasts, we here at the National MS Society
are focusing our efforts on providing services and support to all
those living with multiple sclerosis in our area. In light of the
damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the MS 150 Tour for Cure
originally scheduled for Oct.1-2 has been postponed.
We are hoping to be able to reschedule the bike tour to the spring of
2006, at which time we hope that the infrastructure of Louisiana
will be better equipped to support the event.
At the current time we are devoted to ensuring that we continue to
provide necessary support and assistance to all those who are living
with the effects of MS, especially in the wake of the current
situation in South Louisiana.
We are happy to report that all members of our staff are safe and out
of the New Orleans area. Our thoughts are with all those who are
currently dealing with the ongoing effects of Hurricane Katrina.
Any of you who currently have donations you have received for the MS
150 Tour for Cure may mail those donations to:

end the devastating effects of MS. Please refer anyone needing
assistance with MS treatment, medication, or other support to 1-800-

CajunMan Tri Donations Appreciated for Hurricane Relief
From Rusty Bex, CajunMan Tri Race Director
Just a quick update to let you guys know what is going on. I have now
brought to the Cajundome three car loads of supplies. All items were
well received and by the last load - they were extremely well-
equipped with clothing and other items. Acadiana has been extremely
generous.
I spent time at Lafayette's Cajundome on Labor Day, about five hours
working in distribution and the special needs area. I have many
stories to tell -- but suffice it to say I was very proud to work and
help those in need. I saw many people with CajunMan or Cajun Country
Half Marathon shirts on. I was able to talk to a couple of them. A
great conversation piece is always the Saints - and of course -- this
is the YEAR! In addition, I dropped off at the Red Cross yesterday a
check for $5,0000 courtesy of the CajunMan Triathlon. The lady who
received my check was almost speechless. A guess they don't see such
big numbers from locals. It was gratifying.
In case you missed it -- in Lafayette's Daily Advertiser newspaper
there was a picture of a family of refugees departing Lafayette and
going to Arkansas. In the picture is a lady wearing a CajunMan t-
shirt. And if you look closely in the back -- you will see a second
person wearing a CajunMan t-shirt as well. Our shirts were definitely
put to good use!
I also wanted to let you all know that I have received nearly 50
emails from people telling me what a great thing we did by cancelling
the CajunMan and donating all items to the relief efforts. In
addition, many people have come up to me and patted me on the back
and thanked me (us) for doing what we did. I was happy people took
the time to do so. However, I must tell you that one person from
Shreveport did not appreciate my donating all the monies to this
cause. If anyone wants to email him, I have his email. Let
me know.
In addition, John Deshotel is spearheading a project to cook for some
local shelters here in Lafayette.

Two major storms in one month makes for a tough time in our state.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those in the Abbeville and Lake

increases heavily, we are excited to see that hundreds of people who
have never run Miami before have registered for the fourth edition of
the race. Registration for 2006 has almost doubled compared to this
time last year and almost 400 have registered in the past week alone.
With registration picking up now during marathon season, we expect
that the half marathon will sell out early and the 2006 race will
include over 10,000 runners for the first time in the history of a
South Florida marathon. Registration fees increase after Sept.
30 for the full and half, as well as the 5km, so it's important that
you beat the rush and register now. Save money and save your place in
the fourth annual ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon.
Marathon season has begun and thousands have already chosen Miami for
their winter destination race in January. As September comes to an
end, registration fees will increase as well. In order to save money
and guarantee your spot in the most scenic race in the country, you
should register now and make plans for a great vacation in Miami and
Miami Beach, topped off with a great race and the coolest finisher's
medal in running.
After Sept. 30, fees will increase to $65 for the marathon (US, CAN,
MEX, Bahamas) and $40 for the half-marathon (US, CAN, MEX, Bahamas),
making Miami one of the most affordable races around.
PR Racing and CEO Challenges are proud to present the ING Miami

<<Oct. 9 Atchafalaya Duathlon Cancelled>>
From Keith Hebert, kthebert54@...
Yes, we decided to cancel due our first Atchafalaya Duathlon due to a
combination of issues.
Local law enforcement could not guarantee manpower because they have
people spread thin within St. Martin Parish as well as helping out
in neighboring parishes; our volunteer groups of Knights of Columbus
have members who are now out of town working with Katrina and Rita
relief efforts so that our volunteer numbers have dropped; the
Atchafalaya Welcome Center is without power as we speak, etc., etc.
It became an issue of safety, manpower, etc.
So we felt it best to cancel. Resources and monies will be
distributed to help with hurricane relief and we are now setting our
sites on Evangeline Oak Duathlon in February, 2006 in St.
Martinville.
From Heath Fontana
Sorry guys. When I received the Louisiana Multisport Report e-mail
recently that stated the race was to be held on Oct 9, I assumed it
was accurate information. Further investigation shows it's
cancelled. I apologize. No one feels more let down than I. Word is
the Piney Hills Classic off-road bike and multisport races are still
on, but I would check for sure before traveling to the event site in
Ruston.
<<Tarvers Report on Rita Damage to Lake Charles, Sulphur Area>>
From Diane Tarver
I was checking my email using a cell phone and a lap top plugged
into a generator.
It is a slow connection but at least it is a little contact.
Our family evacuated but we came back in behind the storm on Sat
night. We repaired the minor damage on our home and those around us.
Fully 50 percent of the trees are down and what is left is stripped.
It looks like winter. Roads were not drivable and we had to zigzag
around trees and power poles to get in. After a few days, the roads
are now more clear. Gas is limited. Most that are here are living on
generators, us included. However, we feel we have secure our home so
we may take a break and leave for a few days.
At this time, I cannot run my business. There is no mail or UPS, so I
cannot get my orders in or out. The website is still accepting
orders, but I cannot process and ship until the city allows people
to return. Calcasieu Parish is literally closed. I-10 is open but
the National Guard is not allowing exit off the interstate. Those
that come in are using back roads.
Schools are closed and suffered much damage. We drove by the high
school to see the damage and the National Guard has set up base
there and our new aquatic facility. As we drive down the road or
check the distribution points for supplies, it is hard to image that
these are all strangers to our town that have come in to help. Most
disappointing is that the national news still has more focus on
Katrina and little on Rita. They also focus on Texas
cities that were hit although Louisiana is suffering as well.
Hope all is well on the outside world. As soon as I get to a point
that I can get internet access that is not so slow, I want to post
some pictures of the storm on our website. Thanks to all those that
have emailed or tried to call.

<<Arizona Cyclists Looking for Ways to Help Hurricane Relief>>
From Brad Jones, jonescamp@...
I am a member of the White Mountain Road Club in the metro area of
Phoenix, AZ. I don't represent the club in any formal capacity, but I
would like to ask you a couple of questions about finding a
bike-related need to be supported in the wake of Katrina. Our club
tossed around the idea of making a donation to one of the major
charities last month, but I suggested that we use our personal funds
for general relief and wait until we can find a peer group in New
Orleans that might benefit from a collective donation from our club's
year-end leftover funds.
Could you email me some info about what needs have arisen in your
area as a result of the hurricane and flooding, including who and
how we can help in at least some small way? Is there another
resource you might suggest I connect with to explore the needs in
your area?

From Alan Moore
This is just an update on race results for those who might be
interested and to know that there's still some racing left in the
season...just in other places.
Arkansas Mercy Celebrity Classic Report
Team LaS'port based in Shreveport had a couple of riders in
attendance. Heath Fontana won the Masters 35+/Cat. 4-5 criterium. He
then came back to take 8th place in the Cat. 4-5 race after nearly
crashing with three turns to go to the finish on a wet course
(thanks to the remnants of hurricane Hurricane Rita). He uncleated
and got a couple of nice bruises on the backs of his lower legs.
He raced again the next day, getting a second place in the Masters
35+/Cat. 4-5 event. LaS'port's Shannon Koch raced the Women's Open
events, getting a 3rd place and a sixth place the next day. Baton
Rouge rider Stan Prutz of Tiger Cycling got 18th in the Cat. 4-5
crit and 15th in the Masters 35+/Cat. 4-5 race on Saturday. He
finished out an IronMan-effort day by taking 8th in the Masters 45-
54 race!
Shannon Koch has been busy racing the last few weeks, doing the
Twilight Criterium in Athens, GA and a criterium in Gainsville. Then
it was a return to Atlanta for the 10km Classic. You can read her
take on the races at her blog: http://fcshannon.blogspot.com/
Several LaS'port riders will be participating in the Texas state
road race championships the weekend of Oct. 8th and we'll probably
call it a season after that.
<<USA Triathlon Report from Regional Board>>
Olen Penn info@...
New Board Member
First off, our new board member to replace Renae Mitchell is David
Young. The current board voted Young in during our Sept. 27th
teleconference. He is widely known in the Dallas community. He
currently manages Keifer swim shop and coaches the Plano Wetcats
Masters Swim Team. He has ties to many of the Dallas area tri clubs
and is also an IronMan many times over, having participated in the
original Hawaii IronMan races far before Kona obtained the status it
holds today. Contact him at irondave@....
All current board members will serve the SMW region through Dec. 31,
2006.
2006 Frost Yer Fanny
This is shaping up to be one big party that all you athletes do not
want to miss. This year we will be serving food around 6 p.m. and
getting things moving at a faster pace so that many of you can turn
in and get your zzzzzzzzs! This year, Chris Hunt, who is in charge
of rankings, is not planning on giving out glasses or serving
trays. Chris is working on something special and I wish him luck.
This year, we will be giving out the second annual Super Competitor
Awards. These awards will be for the male and female who completed
the most duathlons and the male and female that completed the most
triathlons.
Online registration for Frost Yer Fanny has been set up. The address
is http://signmeupsports.com/index_tri.htm. I beg anyone that plans
on attending to sign pre-register. We have more than $2,000 in
multisport merchandise to give away, but the kicker is that it will
be split amongst those that pre-register. If we go off of last years
numbers, then 35 people will make out like bandits, and 100 will sit
there and watch. Don't sit around and watch, get into the drawing.
For those of you who don't want to register online, you can mail
your payment. Mail information can be found on the online form. The
price is $16 until Dec. 31, and then there is a late fee.
The second thing you need to do after registering is to book your
hotel. Board member Terry Kincaid of West Monroe is handling the FYF
details. He has informed us of a special $65 rate. Last year, the
$65 rate did not last very long, so don't hesitate to book your room.
The race venue is also different this year. It will be a
5km/30km/5km held on the Louisiana Tinman Triathlon venue.
2006 Championship Races
We have selected the 2006 championship races for the SMW region.
These are the races that will weigh heavy towards your regional
rankings.
Duathlon
Regional Lazy E Formula 1 Guthrie, OK
AR State Du for The Parks Hot Springs, AR
LA State Opelousas Rotary Opelousas, LA
OK State Fall Classic Bethany, OK
TX State Dogwood Palestine, TX
Triathlon
Regional Marble Falls Marble Fall, TX
Regional Sprint Stonebridge Ranch McKinney, TX
AR State Ozark Valley Fayetteville, AR
LA State Hidden Paradise Ruston, LA
OK State The Lighthouse Oklahoma City, OK
TX State D Scott Texas Man Dallas, TX
You will need to check with the USAT national calendar or contact
these race directors to find out the exact dates for 2006. Clubs
races have not been listed because the club chairperson has
presented an alternative plan. We are interested in hearing the
athletes' views towards the club championships.
Hurricane Katrina
The hurricane caused the cancellation of the Lake Charles Gatorman.
The Gatorman was to be the Louisiana State championship. The board
voted and decided to award the championship status to the Meatpie
Tri. Hurricane Rita caused the postponement of the Meatpie Tri. The
race has been rescheduled for Oct. 30, 2005. The race is capped at
350 and already filled up. Go to http://www.runwild.us/meatpietri.htm for contact information.
Know the course!
I just returned from volunteering at a local race in McKinney, TX.
My job was to lead the international distance lead runner through
the 10km course. I rode the course Saturday with the race director
to make sure I knew it. I rode it again the morning of the race to
make sure. As I was leading the lead runner out on the course, there
came a time when a volunteer was telling everyone to turn left when
the YELLOW arrows said to go straight. The point here is that
everyone should have KNOWN to go straight. If you didn't, you didn't
pay attention to the announcements and, well you did a little
extra. Volunteers and law enforcement officers are not usually
athletes and don't study the course like YOU and ME. My view on this
has changed as I've learned more about triathlon. I lost a race last
year because I missed the turn-a-round. I blamed the officer that
told me to go straight when it really was my fault. I didn't know
the course, hadn't looked at a map, and showed up to the race 20
minutes before it started.
Goals accomplished
The last regional letter ended with me telling you my goals of
completing my first half and full IronMan-distance races. On Aug.
20th, I completed Degray Lake Half IronMan and it was not a pretty
day. The heat, humidity, and hills claimed many athletes with truly
10 percent who did not finish. You can talk to anyone who was there
that weekend and they will tell you how tough the conditions were.
I look forward to returning next year. You can look for a full recap
of the race on the www.smwtriathlon.org website shortly. On Sept.
24th, around 8:30 p.m., I completed the Redman IronMan. I battled
cramps, fatigue, heat, and humidity. All I can say is that there are
a lot of things that can go wrong during 140.6 miles. Finishing is
an accomplishment all of its own. The guys in OKC did a good job for
a first year event and even better considering that this was only
their second year putting on races. A full recap of the race will
also be available on the regional website.
One last hurrah!
There is one last high point duathlon and triathlon left this
season. The triathlon is closed, but the duathlon in OKC is wide
open. Be in Oklahoma on Oct. 16th for the Fall Classic state
championship.
Races still to go:
Oct. 8, 2005, Dogwood Duathlon III, Palestine, TX
Oct. 9, 2005, South Padre Island Tri, South Padre, TX
Oct. 16, 2005, Fall Classic Du, Bethany, Ok
Oct. 16, 2005, Keep Texas Wild Sprint Tri,Mathis, TX
Oct. 16, 2005, LAC Fall Tri, Flower Mound, TX
Oct. 22, 2005, Tru Texan Tri, Borne, TX
Oct. 22, 2005, Piney Hills Off Road Du, Ruston, LA
Oct. 23, 2005, Abilene Frontier F-1 Du, Abilene, TX
With this being said, it is time for you to start paying attention
to your regional rankings. Go to http://www.smwtriathlon.org/rankings/rankings.asp
and look at the lasted rankings which are supposed to be updated
twice a month. If you have done three triathlons or three duathlons
in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Texas, or Arkansas, you should be ranked.
If you are not ranked, or your time is incorrect for a race, or your
name/results are with another athlete with the same name as you, you
need to start contacting us to find out why. It is up to you find
errors now and not wait until we have put names to the awards to
complain.

"He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is
broken down and without walls." Taylor Caldwell
Everytime I think I've just about seen it all across the Gulf South
after the hurricanes, I see something else that blows my mind. My
job is one that takes me all over the region and I've just about
spanned the area and can tell you that the TV reports show lots, but
there's nothing like seeing areas with which you're acquainted with
your own eyes, smell the smells, and see the looks on long-time
friends coming to terms on the vast changes they must make in their
personal and professional lives.
My first trip into Orleans and Jefferson parishes was stunning. Even
with the excessive video coverage provided by TV reporters from
everywhere, I still found myself not quite prepared for what my eyes
saw. Yes, the damage was harsh with thoughts of what was ahead in
restoration, but the stories in peoples' faces and eyes was what
really gripped me most. The city is quiet and there's comparably
little energy when I think back on previous visits there. There's a
somber, weary, stunned feeling I get from those I saw, met and
visited. They added to my already buldging emotional suit case of
stories and events about the brutal month of September along the
Gulf Coast.
For Louisiana residents and citizens who care, the challenge for the
state will be to keep the issue of storm recovery on the minds of
the rest of the country. I don't believe most folks outside the area
can grasp just how enormous the task of recovery will be -- from
Cameron to Buras and everything in between. While so much focus is
on New Orleans, make no mistake there is great damage in the rural
areas of the state as well. I was in Houma, for example, and the
damage done there came mostly from Rita and not Katrina. Just last
week, there were bayou levees breaking and constant work keeping
salt water out of areas far inland in Terrebonne Parish.
Through all this, my workout routine has changed as has many others
across the Coastal South. I just got back from my first road run
with none other than Baton Rouge running guru Jenni Peters. It was a
nice October evening and the challenge for us wasn't old legs and
tired bodies, but dodging all the folks out running, walking, and
riding around the LSU Lakes.
I hear that Baton Rouge-based Club South Runners October Fest 5km
went well and that Mockler Beverage provided plenty of nice, cold
Budweiser. I hope you can see the results attached. Thanks to Greg
Oliver for the great pictures of last Saturday's run in the capital
city. To view go to http://greigolivier.com/mockler/
CajunMan Triathlon race director Rusty Bex, sbrdude@..., noted
that the GatorMan Triathlon was never scheduled to be the 2005 state
championship tri as reported in last week's enotes. The information
was from regional officers of USA Triathlon and I apologize for the
error. Now due to two hurricanes, the state championship event will
be the Meat Pie Triathlon, which has been rescheduled for Oct. 30 in
Natchitoches.
GatorMan Tri, which was staged for years in Lake Charles, has been a
championship event for the state, but CajunMan Triathlon got the
honor in 2005 but had to pass along the title to Meat Pie Triathlon.
CajunMan Tri is held in Lafayette each. Year. So, hurricanes Rita
and Katrina made Lafayette a center for displaced residents and
center for aid amid the two disasters.
Amid all the fitness schedule shuffling for the end of this year,
it's time to start sorting out fitness event schedules for 2006. If
you've got dates of events in your area, do let me know. The
schedule is coming together slowly but surely for 2006, so let me
encourage race directors/planners to start thinking now about the
2006 calendars.
<<Adventure Race Series Set for November>>
From Dave Poleto dpoleto@...
All of us at LaAdventure Racing hope your lives have begun to return
to normal since the hurricane. It has been trying times for
everyone, and I know that each of us has been affected by the recent
disaster. We want to do our part for the relief efforts,
have decided to make our series championship Atchafalaya Adventure
Race a fund raiser to help the victims of the two hurricanes that
affected our great state. Proceeds from this Nov. 12th race will go
to help those that need it most. Plus, I'm sure many of you could
use a fun day to come enjoy an adventure with us in the beautiful
Atchafalaya Basin.
Here are some of the details on the race and the final event in the
"Race to the Atchafalaya" series.
First, no teams need to qualify to be a part of this race. All teams
are welcome and will be battling for race prizes including our
"Massey's Treasure Hunt" certificates throughout the course. For
teams battling in the point series, each team that has competed in
any of our series events will receive 200 points (first place) for
the Ocean Springs race. It is only fair as many teams were counting
on that event to have their necessary race point totals for the
series. Also, the Atchafalaya Adventure Race is worth double points
(400 points for first place), so teams can really make a big move in
the series with this event. We're awarding over $5,000 in prizes for
the top 10 teams in each series division.
Added Bonus: The first 50 teams that sign up for the Atchafalaya race
will receive a $100 certificate towards any future LaAdventureRacing
event. This $5,000 is our way of saying "thanks" for all of the
support and that we're already looking ahead to big things in 2006!
(Two new races will come into the series next year).
<<Meat Pie Triathlon Set for Oct. 30>>

<<Multisporter Thanks Red's Health Club During Storm Disruption>>
From Sam Houston Jones, Lake Charles
On behalf of all "displaced triathletes" from both Katrina and Rita,
I wanted to compliment Red's fitness center of Lafayette for
allowing evacuees from New Orleans and Lake Charles to use their
facilities free of charge for a couple of weeks. In addition, Red's
has allowed said evacuees now to join by the week or month without
any long-term commitment.
The LSU student recreation center in Baton Rouge has also extended
such an offer to alumni only. I have taken advantage of both offers.
I will lobby fitness clubs in SWLA to extend the same courtesy to
those of you in Lafayette and Baton Rouge should you ever have to
leave your homes for an extended period of time (heaven forbid!).
<<Hurricane Relief Jerseys for Sale>>

Sorry I didn't get this out earlier, I just got an e-mail today
working on a cycling jersey to help the storm relief efforts. These
are very cool jerseys, with the proceeds going to help with area
bike shops in New Orleans. Also, proceeds from jersey proceeds also
benefit dealers affected by hurricane Rita. You can order them from
any Louis Garneau dealer, probably any bike shop you know, including
me. The deadline is this Friday, so let me (or whatever shop you
normally deal with) know by Friday.

<<Louisiana Riders Get "Noticed" in Texas State Cycling Event>>
From Alan Moore
Okay, it can probably be said that Shreveport-based team LaS'port's
cycling racing season is now over. I can only speak as one who has
been off his bike pretty much the last 5-6 weeks due to sickness and
the things of life. But some of the 'Sporty boys have been staying
active since the last four LaMBRA events of 2005 had to be canceled
due to hurricanes. They've spent time in Texas and Arkansas and have
been making themselves known. Hey, we gotta beat up on somebody
since the rest of LaMBRA isn't beating up on US right now! LaMBRA
has its share of righteous racers and we know they aren't scared of
anybody.
Anyways, last Saturday was the Texas State Road Race Championships
near College Station and a bunch of the guys went over to show Texas
a thing or two. We weren't as dominating as we were at Hotter'n Hell
(a couple of wins and a second place) but we got noticed. In the
day's top race Russ Walker finished seventh overall but patrolled
the pack like the seasoned vet he is. There were around 80 starters
and I've heard up to 55 of them DNF'd. Jason Sager (THSJ), who used
to live and ride in Baton Rouge for years, and Patrick Marr
(LaS'port) went off on a break early in the race that got a gap
of upwards to four minutes! Other LaS'port riders initiated breaks
and chased down those lackeys from Team Hotel San Jose (those boys
can race), Matrix, Tenzing, Compliance Depot (who awesomely brought
back the Sager break near the end and paid the big price for it),
Trek VW, Mercy, Team Monex, and others. Literally, the best of Texas
was there and LAMBRA's reps from LaS'port gave their heart and soul
to get Russ into a position to take a top ten spot. David Wenger of
THSJ took the win and deserved it completely. He exploded out of the
tube with a half lap to go and nobody could touch him.
Shannon Koch finally won her first Texas state road race
championship, with former LaS'port rider Jennifer Purcell of
Midwestern State University taking second place over a decent field.
I heard it was an animated race for a lady's event.
Brian Smith got caught up in a massive crash in the Cat 5's with a
half mile to go as the pack was moving at 30 mph. He broke his
clavicle and ended up in the hospital. He's home now and doing fine
considering. Eric Gaensehals got a pack finish.
In the Cat. 4's race, Shreveporters Joe French and Scott Gurganus
took part in that huge field (the official results ONLY go 60
deep!). Gurganus got caught up in a crash that trashed his front
wheel and he, along with Joe, weren't able to catch back on.
You can read up on the races at www.txbra.org in the racers' forum.
Check the thread called "WengerNation" and read up on the exploits.

I am looking for a few bike repair volunteers to help on nearly 300
bikes donated to help hurricane victims. I don't think there are
major repair issues, and it's a great time to fine-tune your bike
mechanic skills. We'll be meeting during the day in north Baton Rouge
at the Howell Park Recreation Center at Winbourne Avenue and Elm
Drive, which is east of Foster Drive and Winbourne. Bring bike stands
and whatever tools you have to help. We started today, but we'll be
working for several days on the project. Come help out. Call me for

<<San Diego is Start for Ride to Reunite Gulf Coast>>
From Ryan Yee and Daniel Ramsey danella02@...
Join the team to continue help reuniting folks whose lives were
disrupted by hurricanes Rita and Katrina! Help bring awareness and
aid to recent Gulf Coast hurricanes victims by, supporting the Ride
To Reunite. Our vision is to utilize the sport of cycling to
demonstrate a commitment to social responsibility and concern.
We are uniting the cycling world in an effort to raise worldwide
awareness, relief, and funds for the victims of the recent Gulf Coast
hurricanes. The Ride to Reunite specifically focuses attention on the
critical need to reunite children and their families who were
affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. To quickly raise awareness
we have joined forces with an established charity. Save the Children,
is the leading U.S. and world-wide independent organization creating
lasting change for children in need.
Through its Gulf Coast Recovery Fund For Children all money generated
will be put to immediate use. All donations will be a 100 percent tax
deduction. Our goal is to raise $100,000 for the hurricane victims.
As cyclists we know it takes a team to achieve, and this couldn't be
truer now. Help us raise awareness by joining the group of already
committed cyclists for a segment of the ride or sponsoring a rider.
Other ways you can contribute are by donating products that can be
used in our raffle to generate money for the charities.
Ride Info: We will be departing with a sponsor and media kickoff
celebration in San Diego at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22nd, from the San
Diego Velodrome and complete the Ride To Reunite at 3 p.m. Sunday
Oct. 30th in New Orleans.
Our team will include 8-10 top professional cyclists committed to
riding from San Diego to New Orleans. Alongside the pros will be an
equally committed group of hundreds of cyclists prepared to ride
segments of the journey. Ride logistics have been planned for those
riders going the distance including navigators, mechanics, a team
chef, mobile support, and traveling caravan.
Media coverage will be utilized in the eight major U.S. cities in
route from San Diego to New Orleans (San Diego - Phoenix - Tucson -
El Paso - San Antonio, - Houston - Baton Rouge - New Orleans).
No matter what is in our future as cyclists we are committed to causes
outside ourselves. Now our focus is on the young victims and their
families affected by recent hurricanes. As cyclists we use intense
efforts to succeed, and it will take an intense effort of social
responsibility to win the battle against the Gulf Coast hurricane
disasters and the continuing long term effects.
For more info on how to join us please send an email to info@... or visit www.RideToReunite.com to make
donations.

Good luck to all those doing the rescheduled Meat Pie Triathlon in
Natchitoches this weekend. It should be a bit chilly in Cane River.
Any reports on the Piney Hill Classic races held last weekend in
Ruston? It's been quiet on the northern front lately.
Can someone confirm whether there will be an off-road duathlon in
Baton Rouge this fall?
Okay, it's the proverbial "fish or cut bait" time in the
organization of the annual printed edition of the Louisiana
Multisport Report. I have been fortunate to
have a core of loyal advertisers who make the publication possible
over the last 11 editions. But this year, with life and business in
Louisiana totally different now, that core financial support has
changed. Therefore, I appeal to all you running, biking, swimming,
fitness groups and clubs to consider buying an ad in this annual
edition. Whether your group has an event to publicize or not,
this is an opportunity for you to showcase your group and key
projects and events in which your group may have been involved. I do
hope all you fitness groups out there with budgets that can afford
to buy ads will seriously consider placing an ad.
Others can use the ads in the Louisiana Multisport Report as an
avenue to thank key corporate sponsors and their involvement in your
sport. Think creatively in using this one-time only printing
opportunity as a time share your message for the past year and the
one coming. I need your materials by Nov. 11, 2005. Call me or email
me if you have more questions or check out the attachments.

Anyone interested in volunteering can go to the front entrance of

<<Piney Hills Classic Off-Road Racing Report>>
From Michael Fontana
Louisiana multisporters didn't fair as well as in years past at the
Piney Hills Classic off-road events held in Ruston recently.
Baton Rougean Darius Sampey and I came to the finish line together
in 8th and 9th places, respectively. We both averaged about 6:10
pace on the first run. I managed about 1.5 minutes faster on the
bike, but Sampey ran me down.
Amazingly, sub-50 min bike splits was almost the norm for the top 10
finishers. There were actually two guys finishing under 46 minutes.
One of those splits belonged to the winner, a 17 year old. He was 8
minutes ahead of me. I predict him to be the next Lance Armstrong.

<<Mardi Gras Marathon 1st Run Event in New Orleans Since Hurricanes>>
From Bill Burke
On Feb. 5, 2006 the City of New Orleans will begin anew with the
running of the 41st annual Mardi Gras Marathon. The 2006 Mardi Gras
Marathon will be the first event of any type held in the city since
Hurricane Katrina rolled ashore just east of downtown New Orleans on
August 29, 2005.
The running of this marathon will be a start, a beginning, a
statement to the country and the world that New Orleans and its
people, its culture and its tourism industry are coming
back. "Coming Back to the Big Easy"!
Starting and finishing from the Louisiana Superdome, the 41st annual
Mardi Gras Marathon will take runners and walkers on a virtual tour
of the city that care forgot. Athletes will run through the French
Quarter, City Park, Uptown New Orleans and Audubon Park on their way
to the finish near the Louisiana Superdome. Along the way runners
and walkers will reach each mile signified by a high water mark to
illustrate the depth of flood waters at that location during the
Katrina flooding. Following your city tour, our 2006 post event
party will kick into high gear complete with food, refreshments and
live New Orleans entertainment to top off the afternoon.
If you can't join us for the official rebirth of New Orleans on Feb.
5th, then you can still assist us in our fund raising efforts by
going to www.mardigrasmarathon.com and check out our fund raising
web page set up through active giving. This program through
active.com will allow you the fitness runner or walker to donate
funds to local hurricane relief efforts in New Orleans with just the
click of a button. Anyone donating $50 or more to our cause will
receive by return mail a special long sleeve "Back to the Big Easy"

city of New Orleans.

Challenge (III) will be held April 9, 2006, despite date listing
previously listed for the coming year. Again the race is set at
Cypress Bend Park on Toledo Bend Reservoir, 12 miles west of
Many, LA. The course features a nearly flat 1-mile swim (wetsuit
legal), a 40-mile bike on some of Louisiana's finest pavement
(really!) that is mainly rolling but includes several "big ass"
hills, and a now infamous 10-mile run that has humbled everyone
except Andrew Kenworthy, and he was pretty spent.
This is not a race for flimsy trigeeks or newbies.
It's tough from the get-go, and all finisher shirts,
mugs, and dog-tags will be earned.
We're all camping out this year, hopefully John
Deshotel will be in the cooking mood he was in last
year, and we're all gonna have a blast. Food, fun,
and a wicked hard race.
Check out the website for all information, as well as
race reviews and a great 8 minute video by Hall &
Stolz. www.holytoledotri.com

"Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments." Rose Kennedy
Remember, today is Pearl Harbor Day. This was the day that Hawaii was
attacked and brought the U.S. to enter World War II. Plus, today is
the birthday of one of the state's first professional triathletes:
Jan Meador Ripple.
Congratulations to all those who did the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon
and the Acadiana Half Marathon in Lafayette last weekend. It was
amazingly hot and humid and took a toll on runners in those events.
If only the race had been staged on Monday!
Remember, too, that this coming Monday, Dec. 12th is the advertising
materials deadline for those including information in the printed
edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report.
How did the LaMBRA (Louisiana Mississippi Bicycle Racing
Association) annual meeting go last weeked? Any of you competitive
cyclists out there care to give the rest of us a report?
Keep sending those 2006 fitness event dates my way for the printed
edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. I would like the printed
calendar to be as comprehensive as possible. I know not every event
organizer can give dates at this time, but the sooner you do so the
sooner your event's is more securely locked in the fitness scene. I
know many multisporters plan a good deal of their training around
dates listed in the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport
Report.
Every now and then I find myself reminding folks about how this
little enewsletter project works. I've probably offended folks from
time to time, mainly by not mentioning them or listing their names
in result postings. I apologize now for those I will offend and
those whom I have offended already. Please keep in mind, I don't
purposely intend to neglect anyone and in fact work as time allows
to recognize all those in Louisiana that I can. My notes are mainly
compilations of emails I've gotten from folks all over cyberspace.
If you want recognition, send me the information and I will use it
if I can. Sometimes, I lose emails, occasionally forget them, or
can't find them as I work on "remote" email set ups working out of
town from time to time. But don't send book-length race reports
pretty please, though sometimes I can remember to include them as an
attachment. I prefer to use this as a forum that gives snap shots of
accomplishments and listings of upcoming events.
Again, if your story has been neglected even when you've emailed it,
I apologize. Sometimes I just miss stuff. This is a volunteer effort.
Adventure Race Team Backpacker based in Baton Rouge did an
outstanding job of winning a regional championship adventure race
championship race. Adventure racer Darius Sampey is sending me
details on his team's victory over some very accomplished teams from
across the U.S. Stay tuned for the details.
Attached are some of the fitness dates I've got listed for 2006.
Pass along more dates for the coming year if you have them.
Dec. 11 is set for the Club South Runners half marathon set to start
from Baton Rouge Beach near the LSU campus. Get the details from
Club South Runners web site via lawired.com.

Baton Rouge-based USA Triathlon official Stanton Cadow is working on
puttingtogether an officials' clinic, possibly in conjunction with
the April 22,2006 Louisiana Triathlon.
Marc Salvetti reminds everyone that the 2006 Crawfishman Triathlon
set forSt. Tammany Parish will be May 7.
Another multisport date to remember is the PelicanMan Duathlon. While
plans are still very tentative, hopes are to hold the event at its
home venue in St. Bernard Parish. Remember, this was an area heavily
damaged by Hurricane Katrina. It may have to be moved to the Belle
Chasse area in Plaquemines Parish. It is traditionally held on the
first Sunday in April, which this year would be April 2, 2006. Stay
tuned for details. In previous years, it's been a 2-mile run, 10-mile
bike, and finishing with a 2-mile run.
Teresa White of northwest Louisiana also noted that April 29, 2006 is
thedate of the LOCOfest Off-Road Bike Fest set for Eddie Jones Park
near Shreveport. For more information call 318.218.3761.
Does anyone out there by any wild chance have results to the very old
racecalled the Lakeshore Event Duathlon held on Labor Day for many
years inBaton Rouge? Neil Robichaux is looking for results.
Has anyone heard about dates of the Caney Triathlon in Minden for
2006? I didn't get lots of bike club tour dates or competitive
cycling event dates. Anyone got some of those dates yet for 2006?

The two distributions at FEMA Baker and FEMA Airport 3 in the Baton

distributed 200 adult and children's bikes (a real grueling effort)
and Sunday we gave out 94 mostly adult bikes, in just two hours.
Thanks to all who gave up energyand time to do the work on both days.
Now only one more distribution next Saturday at Howell Park Gym in

distribute then our deed is done. Thanks to all.

Merry Christmas!
Winter is typically an interesting time for Louisiana's
multisporting world. While our cold season is comparably mild, they
are still chilly, chilly enough for excuses not to workout. Throw in
a holiday or two and office and company seasonal parties that run
later in the evening than we're usually accustomed to and you have a
recipe for inactivity.
But alas, there are those enduring groups out there who endure the
rain, wind, and weather no matter what season or what place. Heck we
see some of that at events like marathons run in the polar regions
where people actually participate. Probably the most interesting
local group I've encountered is a bunch of guys who bring their bike
rollers to various venues and train together. Still, you see the
lone runners and cyclists trudging in the miles here and there and
the pools are beginning to pack up with groups readying for the busy
2006 triathlon season.
I'm putting final touches on printed edition of the Louisiana
Multisport Report. It will again be distributed free and made
available at various locations for those whose addresses I may not
have. Check out the draft below of 2006 fitness dates I've collected
so far. If there are changes or additions, I need to know ASAP. I'll
be sending out drafts of triathlon and duathlon rankings for one
last general inspection, so stay tuned.
I didn't get much feed back from folks for nominees for Louisiana's
multisporter of the year. I invite you to send your nominees for
publication.
Don't forget you can go to lawired.com and click on the Multisport
Report icon to get issues of this enote or previous issues published
over the years. If you have an email address change, you can make it
yourself at the yahoo.com site which warehouses the reports.
Swim Workouts Considered on Northshore
From Caroline Smith triswim@...
Ok y'all, it's that time of year again to start swim workouts. With
2006 fast approaching (and for some of you -- IM Arizona less than
four months away), it's time to get back in the pool.
This year, we will start with a four month "TriSwim" session --
January thru April -- at both Pelican Athletic Club & Francos
Athletic Club on the Northshore. And since there is an added month
in this ONE session, the fee will go up a little.
And, there may be a few other changes in time. For the first
session, I am thinking of
NOTICE - the times at each club are different than last year and
this is tentative, thus subject to change. I would appreciate input
from all of you who would like to take part this year at either
club. If the times don't work for you, please let me know. They can
be changed if there is enough conflict. And if they do work, I would
like to know, too, that information. I really need feed back before
I make everything official.
There are additional swimming opportunities for those of you who may
want or need a little more attention in the pool. There is a small
group that swims month to month at Franco's (must be a member) on
Tuesday/Thursdays 10 a.m.-11a.m. This runs $50/month.
Or, if you have a group of friends who want to learn to swim
together, we can form group swims for you at either club. And
private sessions/lessons are available at either club for the
swimming challenged.
Merry Christmas!

How cool it was to see Premier Event Management owner Bill Burke of
Metairie so prominently recognized in the recent edition of Runner's
World magazine? He's no doubt the most enduring multisport event
manager in the world, and he's born and bred right here in
Louisiana. He's working and working hard to make the Mardi Gras
Marathon happen and happen in a big way. All the proceeds from the
Mardi Gras Marathon will go to local hurricane relief projects.
Check out the article if you get a chance. Better still, sign up for
the marathon, half marathon or 5km run he's putting on for the

<<BR Cyclist Margaret Moran Dies in Crash in Felicianas>>
From Bruce Wickert
At slightly after noon on Saturday, Jan. 7, we lost a cyclist and
friend in a crash near St. Francisville. Margaret Moran turned into
the path of a same direction car while attempting to cross the
highway 61 from the shoulder.
The site of the crash was just north of the US-61/LA-966 "Starhill"
intersection, across from the D'John Restaurant. Neither the driver
of the Hummer vehicle, nor Margaret had time to react to avoid the
collision. The Hummer was the last in a string of cars on this busy
highway. The driver, and others stopped immediately, offered
assistance, and called 911 for an ambulance, which arrived quickly.
She was transported to West Feliciana Hospital in St. Francisville,
where personnel made valiant efforts to sustain her life but those
efforts were unsuccessful.
Arrangements are incomplete as this note was written, but visitation
will be at Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge no sooner than
Tuesday. I will pass on additional information as I receive it.
Margaret died without regaining consciousness. Husband Sam, and
children Gina, Jeff, Chris, and her Grandchildren will miss her, as
will the BRBC and Cavaliers de La Fayette cycling clubs with whom
she regularly rode.
Lynn Boland and I were riding with her today, about 50 yards behind
and witnessed this tragedy. To be so close and be so helpless to
prevent it ....
<<Evangeline Oaks Duathlon Coming Feb. 11>>
From Kendal Broussard
Well, it is that time of year again for the second annual Evangeline
Oak Duathlon set for St. Martinville. The race is set for Feb. 11,
2005. The race is staged at the oak tree made famous by American
poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The poem is a story of the Cajun
exile and a young girl (named Evangeline) who waited all her life
for her beau to find her after being forced by the British from her
home in Acadia, now called Nova Scotia.
So come breathe hard, experience racing in cold weather, and learn a
bit more about Louisiana history and its connection to France.

<<Phil Gioia Survives Katrina, Prepares to Direct La. Triathlon>>
How fitting that New Orleans native Phil Gioia, 55, should be
serving as race-weekend director for the 13th Louisiana Triathlon in
Pointe Coupée Parish. He will coordinating the work of long-time key
volunteers for the Saturday, April 22 event staged in downtown New
Roads.
Long-time race director Kenny Dunaway still will be deeply involved
in setting up and promoting the event. For the first time, though,
Dunaway cannot be on site on the day of the race due to professional
obligations. Gioia will be assisted by many of the same key
volunteers as have been involved for years in the event.
Born on Canal Street in the Crescent City, Gioia is a two-time
Ironman finisher and has long been involved in competitive fitness
events in greater New Orleans and around the Gulf Coast region. Most
notably, he has served as race director of the Pelicanman Duathlon
since its inception in 1989 and really set the trend for the now-
popular 2-mile run, 10-mile ride, and 2-mile ride format.
While he was born in New Orleans, he has long lived in Chalmette and
in fact served as president and race director Chalmette Track Club
for 17 of 23 years he's been involved in the group.
As a triathlete, he competed -- or rather participated as he says --
in events all over the U.S. including Gulf Coast, Buffalo Springs,
Freedom Days in New Mexico and the half Ironman at held in New Roads
when Jim Bergeron was race director back in the early 1990s. He
calls himself a chronic participant in the "Reluctant Athelete"
series in the 1980s when equipment was not cool.
He has completed in every tri staged in Louisiana except Caney near
Minden (always a conflict) and had only one DNF (Louisiana Triathlon
at New Roads).
In running events, he has completed more than 100 marathons,
including the last 21 Mardi Gras Marathons (the record of 23
consecutive will fall).
While swimming may not be his favorite, it helped as he salvaged
homes during Hurriances Betsy in 1965 and then again in 2005 with
Hurricane Katrina. Now he knows to keep fit for swimming since
forecasters say there will be more hurricanes than fewer in the
years to come.
His day job has him as operations manager and chemist for
Severn Trent Plaquemines Parish project (where he's been
very busy for since the hurricanes). But his experience will help
him be a great water-quality tester for triathlons in the days to
come. He assures participants in New Roads that he himself will test
the water quality of False River on race day.
Oh yes, and his other hobby is climbing Mt Rainier in Washington
state.

<<Kenny's New Orleans Adventure Tour Set Jan. 28>>
From Kenny Bellau
(Editor's Note: If anyone knows New Orleans and the vicinity it is
Bellau. He is a true hero from Hurricane Katrina, though he'd quickly
reject that label. This will be a ride like you've never seen or
experienced.)
Come to Audubon Park at the Magazine Street. entrance at 8 a.m. sharp
for a tour of New Orleans like you've never experienced.
On Saturday, Jan. 28 I will be hosting a tour of New Orleans' most
impacted areas, including Chalmette. This will be an easy ride of
about 60 miles with several stops along the way, expect 4 hours or
less. The pace will be typical (or what is supposed to be typical)
for a winter ride ... strictly small ring. We will stop at several
significant places, levee breaks and a couple of flooded homes with
commentary by myself and others that have first-hand knowledge,
personal loss or riveting stories. People from outside the area are
especially welcome and encouraged to come. I can promise that
this will be educational and unforgettable to anyone who
participates. Even if you live(d) in New Orleans, you should join us
for this memorable ride.
This ride is guaranteed to give you a greater understanding of the
scope of Hurricane Katrina and you will see and touch things that
some bus tour can't offer.
What you will need for this ride:
1. Good tires! I've been riding in these areas a bunch lately and
have yet to get a flat, but my tires are brand new. There is a lot of
glass on the roads. Tube, pump, etc. highly recommended.
2. A camera.
3. Scruffy shoes: We will get off the bikes and walk up to at least
one levee break. It is rocky and rough and your best shoes and cleats
might make you think otherwise. This is really something you should
see up close.
4. Entry fee: Write public officials from other states. Forward your
pictures to out of state friends. Get the word out how bad our
politicians screwed up and how they continue to screw up. Just go
home and talk about it.
Time and Place:
We will meet at the Magazine entrance to Audubon Park across Magazine
from the zoo. There is plenty of parking and bathrooms there. We will
leave at 8 a.m. sharp! We should be back to the park before noon.
*This ride will be in the city on city streets. We will be expected
to obey all traffic laws. Basic bike handling skills will be useful.
No one will be left behind, but you should be able to ride
comfortably in a pack. We will also be going over a very big bridge
with expansion joints and we will need to be careful. At least one of
our stops will have drinks, Clifbars and bananas and we hope to have
at least one follow vehicle (that position is still open).
Also, anyone is welcome to follow in their car and join in with the
discussion. This is a "ride at your own risk" event and is not
sanctioned or sponsored by anyone or any organization. Please set
this date aside on your calendar and come to New Orleans for a
truly memorable experience.
Hope to see you at the park...

<<FCA Endurance Getting Organized>>
From Trippe Hawthorne gthawthorne@...
Do you ever wonder why endurance events get your attention? Do you
ever wonder what really makes you participate or compete in endurance
events.
Check out this new site that focuses on the spiritual side of your
endurance interest. It's www.FCAEndurance.org.) I've spoken with
Chris Anderson (the executive director) a few times and I'm excited
about the possibilities for groups setting up in Louisiana. I'm
hoping we can get enough interest to start a huddle in Alexandria.
I'd really like to hear your thoughts on ideas on this.
The group is a part of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). The
purpose of FCA Endurance is to further the group's vision and mission
of impacting the world for Jesus Christ through athletes living and
competing for God's glory. Whether you do 5kms for fun, cycle in a
local series, or triathlon for a living ... if you're doing it for
Christ, we want you on our team!
Our Ministry Objectives
How we are going to make a difference:
1. Minister to the Endurance World
We want to tell the Endurance World about
the Love of Christ
2. Unite Christian Endurance Athletes
We want to form a National Team, United in
Purpose, Celebrating Our Blessings.
3. Spread the word about FCA
We want others to know how FCA is changing
lives, and help them in their cause.
This ministry gives adult Christian athletes and all who support
endurance athletics the chance to tell the world why they do the
things they do and why they are the people they are. The ministry's
goal is to unite people competing for a common goal (to glorify God)
and create a stronger front to influence others and defeat spiritual
warfare going on in society and sports. It also serves as a way for
believers to recognize each other and share in a closer fellowship
with one another while enjoying endurance sports. Please feel free to
browse our site. Look it over, pray about it, and join us. Learn and
then tell the world why you race!

<<Proposals Offered to Change USA Tri Region for La.>>
From Robert Sigerson <sigerson@...>
I have made two different proposals to national USA Triathlon about
our state and area. One was to realign all the regions making Texas
its own region and putting Louisiana in a new region with
Mississippi, Alabama, Florida panhandle, Arkansas and Tennessee.
This would make traveling to championship qualifying races more
tolerable to all of us.
The other suggestion is to move the area east of the Mississippi
River into the Southeastern region, MS, AL, FL panhandle, GA & SC.
We are having a meeting along with the awards banquet and Frost Yer
Fanny Duathlon( put on by Matt Brown of Sports Sprectrum, good goody
bag) on Feb. 4 & 5 and you all are invited and urged to come. If
you are unable to come, please give me some comment, up or down,
that I can communicate to the national USAT board members who will
be there. You can e-mail me your comments at sigerson@....
By the way, if you don't really care about USAT, its races and what
it does, let me know that, also.

<<Cyclists Using Roads Along Miss. River Levee Take Note>>
From Randy Collier
An article appeared in the BR Business Report. As you can read, it
does have some potential affect on cyclists interested in riding on
the levees.
"Oops! Baton Rouge forgets to put member on important levee district
Although East Baton Rouge Parish has a seat on the Pontchartrain
Levee District, president Steve Wilson says there has been no Baton
Rouge representative on the board for more than two years. "We keep
hearing there's going to be a nominee, but it has never come
through," he says. Levee board members are usually recommended by
local lawmakers, appointed by the governor and ratified by the state
Senate. Under-representation could be a major issue here, as the
board has recently discussed Baton Rouge-related issues, such as a
bike path that would run atop the Mississippi River levee.
To get the Baton Rouge take on such topics, Wilson says the board
usually defers to the member from Iberville Parish." (Jeremy Alford)

<<Bicycle Safety Stats Released>>
From Ron Land
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just released
its bicycle safety statistics for 2004. It reports 725 cycling-
related deaths in traffic accidents and 41,000 injuries. Among the
fatalities, 87 percent were male.
Cyclist fatalities occurred more frequently in urban areas (66
percent), at non-intersection locations (67 percent), between the
hours of 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. (30 percent), and during June, July and
August (36 percent).
The average age of bike riders killed was 38.7 (10 years older then
the average in 1994, the height of the mountain bike boom). About 20
percent of those killed were between 5 and 15.
Florida is the most dangerous place to ride, followed by Nevada,
Hawaii, Washington, DC, and South Carolina. No cyclists died in
traffic accidents in Rhode Island and Wyoming in 2004. Alcohol --
either inside the driver or rider -- was involved in more than one
third of the accidents that killed cyclists.

<<Feb. 19-26: North American Alternative to Tour de France?>>
From Stan Prutz
This is one cycling event with which you'll want to get familiar.
Some powerful financial folks in California have pulled off getting
alll the major teams that were in last year's Tour de France to show
for the first annual Tour de California - an 8-day 700-mile stage
race. They have $35 million in sponsorship money committed to make
it the premier U.S. cycling event and are listed as the number two
event worldwide (with some talk about it eventually becoming number
one worldwide).
It will be televised on ESPN2 Feb 19-26th. Details are on the website

appreciate everyone's support as we move forward in 2006 and get
back to business with our events. To join or participate in LSOG
events, you must be aged 50 or better.
Although we have a long way to go in reaching our goal in the
membership drive, we're encouraged to see statewide support for
the LSOG. We're also encouraged to see supporters from the
hurricane-affected areas returning and renewing their LSOG
memberships.
Membership dues are $10. All persons who join the LSOG by March 31,

LSOG Southwest District Event Schedule Being Modified
Adele Mart, the Southwest District Games Coordinator, in the Lake
Charles area, was informed January 25 that all events scheduled on
the McNeese Campus are cancelled. The campus facilities have been
under renovation since Hurricane Rita and were on schedule to be
ready for the Southwest District Games.
Construction delays have resulted in the cancellation of only
Southwest District Games events scheduled and listed in the entry
form on the McNeese Campus.
The LSOG website has an updated entry form listing events that are
currently available for the Southwest District Games. Cancelled
events have been crossed out on the entry form on our website.
Shooting (March 18); Golf Medal Play (March 20); Bowling and Putt-

The Southwest District is working to adjust the schedule and
reschedule some events. We will update the LSOG website entry form
and Field Post as we receive updates regarding any changes to events
for the Southwest District Games.

<<Crawfishman Triathlon Announces New Venue for May 7th Event>>
From Mark Salvetti
After some early hard work, we have secured approval for a new race
venue for this years Crawfishman Triathlon. Our race will be held
within the private subdivision of Grande Hills Estates in Bush LA,
just 10 short miles north of Covington. The race is set on Sunday
May 7th, 2006 starting at 7:30 a.m.
For those who do not know the area, you will be surprised at the
rolling hills and beautiful setting that we are lucky enough to use
this year. Our friend Dion McKinley is allowing us to stage the
race/transition area party on his private property, which adjoins
the subdivisions private lake. The race format will be the same as
always, but should prove to be a bit more challenging. The bike
ride will be just under 20 miles, out and back on Highways1083 and
40. The run will be a full 4 miles held entirely within the
subdivision, and should prove interesting with some slight hills.
Due to the size constraints of the race venue, parking concerns and
overall safety of the athletes in mind; we are limiting the field to
250 athletes this year. Should we determine that more are possible
while keeping safety a priority, we will allow for additional
entries. This year we will only give this notice via email, please
pass this information along to all your tri friends far and wide. Go
to our website for more information and online registration which is
now open: http://www.crawfishman.net

Triathlon at New Roads. The field is limited to 400 and
registrations are being accepted online via active.com.
The Evangeline Oak Duathlon last Saturday was great and the turnout
was impressive even with low temperatures and high winds. No doubt

Saturday is the Baton Rouge Mardi Gras Mambo 10km that starts from
the downtown area of the capital city. I'll be working the corner at
Tower Drive and Dalrymple so give me a shout as you go through the
LSU area.
The epic bike race of the winter -- maybe of the entire year -- for
the region is about to happen in the Felicianas: The Rouge Roubaix.
It's the internet chit chat of chit chats on web sites and internet
blogs. Nationally distributed Bicycle Magazine had an excellent
article and photo display about the race started by Jon Anderson,
who now lives in Minnesota. Check out bicycleracing.com for details
on the March 5th event.
If you want a warm-up before the Rouge Roubaix bike race, consider
the Brother Eldon 5km run starting from the Catholic High Campus in

<<Kenny's "Racers" New Orleans Disaster Tour Set Feb. 19>>
From Kenny Belleau
(Mardi Gras parades after the ride! Bring your family!)
Set Sunday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m. sharp
Audubon Park, Magazine St. Entrance
(An easier-paced ride is in the works for after Mardi Gras.)
Sunday, Feb. 19, I will be hosting another tour of New Orleans' most
impacted areas including Chalmette. We're starting later, and will
finish earlier. This ride will be a little faster than the last one
with a pace of about 20mph between stops. No attacking, no surges or
sprints, but you should be comfortable riding with a pack of riders
that you might find on any Sunday morning. If you've entered any
race, century or tour in the last two years, you shouldn't have a
problem. But we will be moving on. This will be an easy ride of
about 60 miles with several stops along the way, involving about
four hours or less. The pace will be typical (or what is supposed to
be typical) for a winter ride ... strictly small ring. We will
stop at several significant places, levee breaks and a couple of
flooded homes with commentary by myself, a couple of guest speakers
and others that have first-hand knowledge, personal loss or riveting
stories.
People from outside the area are especially welcome and encouraged
to come. I can promise that this will be educational and
unforgettable to anyone who participates. Even if you live(d) in New
Orleans, you should join us for this memorable ride. It is
guaranteed to give you a greater understanding of the scope of
Hurricane Katrina and you will see and touch things that some
bus tour can't offer.
What you will need for this ride:
1. Good tires! I've been riding in these areas a bunch lately and
have yet to get a flat, but my tires are brand new. There is a lot
of glass on the roads. Tube, pump, etc. highly recommended.
2. A camera.
3. Your worst pair of cycling shoes: We will get off the bikes and
walk up to at least one levee break. It is rocky and rough and your
best shoes and cleats might make you think otherwise. This is really
something you should see up close.
4. Entry fee: Go home and talk about this. Write public officials
from other states. Forward your pictures to out of state friends.
Get the word out how bad our politicians screwed up and how they
continue to screw up. Don't vote for the incumbents. Talk it up.
Time and Place:
We will meet at the Magazine Street entrance to Audubon Park across
Magazine Street from the Audubon Zoo. There is plenty of parking and
bathrooms. We should be back to the park before noon.
*This ride will be in the city on city streets. We will be expected
to obey all traffic laws. Basic bike handling skills will be useful.
No one will be left behind, but you should be able to ride
comfortably in a pack. The pace will be more suitable for racer
types. We will also be going over a very big bridge with expansion
joints and we will need to be careful. At least one of our stops
will have drinks, Clifbars and bananas and we hope to have
at least one follow vehicle (that position is still open again).
Also, anyone is welcome to follow in their car and join in with the
discussion. This is a "ride at your own risk" event and is not
sanctioned or sponsored by anyone or any organization. We will cross
2 metal-grate draw bridges and one very large bridge like any bridge
you've seen over the Mississippi. Fear is not an option.
Please set this date aside on your calendar and come to New Orleans
for a truly memorable experience. Hope to see you at the park...
Directions
Coming from Baton Rouge on I-10, take the South Carrollton exit
(exit 232). This is a confusing exit, keep your eyes open and make
sure you are getting on South Carrollton. You will need to veer left
two times on this exit to get on South Carrollton. Stay on South
Carrollton until it narrows to two lanes (street car tracks will be
on the neutral ground). Go all the way to the end of Carrollton. It
ends at the levee. Turn left at the levee (Leak Avenue). Stay on the
River Road until you get to the first stop sign (Broadway) and go
straight through the stop sign. Just past the stop sign, the road
will veer left and turn into Magazine Street.
The park will be on your left and the entrance is about quarter mile
into the park on your left. Turn left into the park and get out.
Hope to see you there.

<<Age-Up Rule in Place for 2006 for Multisporters>>
From Farrel LeBoeuf
For 2006 USA Triathlon-sanctioned events, there is a new "Age Up
Rule" that governs giving out awards for age groups.
Below is the USAT Rule Book Website for the rule and below that I
have cut and pasted several announcements from applications I found
(by surfing on the Web) of upcoming USAT sanctioned events.
If you have not mentioned the "Age-Up Rule" in your applications I
strongly suggest you do so to prevent further complications on the
day of your event. If you have already sent your apps out you might
want to try and explain the Rule on the website you are posted on.
If you mentioned that you will abide by all USAT Rules then you are
covered but there may be problems race day.
Note: Cut and Pasted Announcements from various Applications on
upcoming USAT races (to use as an example only):
USAT AGE UP RULE NEW FOR 2006! All USAT races will use the "AGE UP
RULE" for award distribution and ranking. It is important that you
begin in the proper wave start with respect to this rule. The age up
rule means you are racing based on your age as of 12/31/06. Our
computer timing program will automatically calculate your age based
on your birth date and the age up rule criteria.
USAT's new "Age Up" Policy:
In 2006, USAT has adopted a new policy governing a participant's age
at USAT races. An athlete's age for any USAT sanctioned race will be
his/her age as of Dec. 31, 2006. The age he/she is on 12/31 will
determine his/her racing age group. If an athlete is due to "age-up"
into the next group, it will happen at the beginning of the year, not
after the athlete's birthday. This action aligns regular U.S. age
group racing with the method used by USA Triathlon for its National
Rankings Program and its new Grand Prix Series.
Example: John Smith is 9 and will turn 10 on Nov. 20, 2006.
John will be considered 10 for all 2006 races.
Sally Jones is 4 and will turn 5 on July 3, 2006.
Sally will be considered 5 for all 2006 races - and will be eligible
to race as a 5 year old at all 2006 races.
Age-Up Rule
Please note that all athletes will be placed in their age group
according to their age on Dec. 31, 2006. For example, if you are 24
years old and will turn 25 years old in November, you will race in
the 25-29 year old age group.

From Stan Cadow
A USA Triathlon officials clinic -- for the first time in modern

additional Officials, as we have only 3 active from Louisiana. Did
you know that Louisiana is second only to Colorado in triathletes
per capita? So, here in the Bayou State we a very competitive and
active multisporters, and opportunities to help maintain our sport
in as professional and safe a manner possible abound.
The clinic will be held Friday, April 21, 2006 from 2 p.m. to 5
p.m.at the Pointe Coupée Parish Library at 201 Claiborne Ave. in New
Roads, LA. The clinic is the day before the Louisiana Triathlon,

<<Holy Toledo Triathlon Set for March 26>>
From Bobo Anderson
All is well with the Holy Toledo Triathlon at t-minus three weeks to
go. Feedback from hardy tri-geeks across the South has been full of
juice, as seen from this excerpt from a T. Stolz of the Bayou Gators:
"Alright, Bobo, it looks like we're going to have quite a crew of
Bayou Gators up in Toledo Bend later this month. There should be
about four or five us racing, plus a relay, plus wives/significant
others/brokeback cowboys in attendance. This is quickly becoming
THE racing event of the year, and so we are RV'ing it from New

I, Bobo, have to wonder: Do these "Bayou Gators" occupy the

<<Triathlon Grand Prix Announced>>
From Bob Sigerson
The regional board of USA Triathlon has just set a meeting on March
13, 2006 to make recommendations to national USAT regarding the
Grand Prix events for 2007. To date, I have received only one race
director's interest in being put in the mix for these events and
that was from Rusty Bex's Opelousas Duathlon.
Louisiana hosts a third of the international distance triathlons in
this huge region and I have received no interest from anyone to host
a Grand Prix triathlon (only/international) event. I have also not
received any interest in the Grand Prix sprint-distance events from
some of the more popular triathlons in the region.
I have been fighting for Louisiana members and race director's for
two years and have been held over this year, so I am still fighting.
But I need help in this fight and it all comes down to you guys. If
you don't want or like these championships to be dominated by the
other states, you need to indicate that you have some interest.
The only information I need is the races you want considered(you can
include all you produce, if you want), a probable date in 2007 and
distances if you decide to change them. Thanks for your help!

I am selling my wife's road bike. It is
a 54cm GT ZR5.0 in what I call perfect condition. It's red -- I just
completed an overhaul including new chain, cables, brake pads and
bottom bracket. Now here is the kicker: This is an aluminum framed
bike with an Easton EA30 carbon fiber fork to take some of the sting
out of the stiff frame. We just added my carbon fiber Spinergy four
spoke wheels so it rides like a dream as the Spinergy wheels really
smooth out the ride quality on small bumps.
I also have the original wheels as well and will include them in the
sale, but prefer to sell it all as a package. The components are
admittedly low end, Shimano Tiara dual control but it rides and
shifts great. And looks fantastic with the Spinergy wheels.
I would like to get $600 for it, so send me an email at kerrystamey@... if you are interested. Call 225.324.3499.

Friday evening April 28th is the Mid City Heritage 5km in Baton
Rouge. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. starting at Sacred Heart Church

up for grabs for top racers. Get more details at 225.346.1000 or

The first week-day cycling training ride went off safely Tuesday in
Baton Rouge starting as usual at 5:30 p.m. sharp. There was a big
crowd pedaling in two groups from the Farr Horse Park located just
south of the LSU campus. How are the week-day rides shaping up
elsewhere across the state? Where do they meet, what time do they
start, and about long are the workouts?

region since coming to work in Baton Rouge. But he will be leaving
soon for a new job in California.

<<La. Tri in New Roads Set April 22>>
From BRTri Web Site
This year is the 13th birthday of the Louisiana
Triathlon at New Roads. Previously Jim Bergeron of Thibodaux had put
on a race there for a couple of years; sometimes it was called the
Baton Rouge Triathlon and other times he called it the New Roads
Triathlon.
For details on the 2006 event go to www.lawired.com and click on the
event icon.
When Bergeron retreated from producing the event and a couple of
seasons passed without one on False River, the current race director
was encouraged by Bill Bender to resurrect the event. Bender had
just moved to Baton Rouge after finishing school at Virginia Tech
and couldn't imagine there was not a triathlon on this beautiful ox
bow lake just 25 miles northwest of Baton Rouge. Many often said
False River is just too perfect of a place for a triathlon. At
the time, Louisiana triathletes were lucky if there was at least one
triathlon a month much less one a quarter in their home state. There
just weren't many triathlons produced in the state 13 years ago.
After being assured by Bender that the event would work, the current
race director approached community and political officials about
doing the race and the rest is history. Bender long ago moved out of
state and the current race director has worked with others as co-
race directors, including long-time Club South Runners president Ron
Terry was one of the current race director's partners. But in
recent years, few have stepped up to help as co-producer of the
event. Thankfully, though, the multisport and competitive fitness
community in and around Baton Rouge have been generous in helping
and working together to present the event. Event management can be
scary when corporate sponsors are sparse, regular work is
consuming and raising a family has to fit somewhere. It's
understandable why folks opt not to direct event.
Organizers chose to keep the event a short-distance-styled race to
attract more newcomers to the race. Bergeron did put on a half-
Ironman event in New Roads for a couple of years, but the current
race director believes his niche in multisporting is the short-
distance event. He also keeps the event in the spring so he can
proceed with his own training and racing. Plus, a spring season
event put him before lots of other races and doesn't create lots of
competition for attracting participants.
"Our event isn't the biggest and probably isn't the best, but it's a
nice, small-scale race when compared to big-time productions being
offered across the state," noted the race director. "We get many
first-time triathletes, many who have never done an open-water swim.
People are so fearful of open-water swimming. But it's always
gratifying to hear folks say how good they feel about doing their
first triathlon. It's even more gratifying to hear people
say they keep coming back to the event because it's where they
started triathloning," he added.
While the event wasn't whole heartedly embraced by the New Roads
community in the early years, most folks in the area now welcome the
event and its participants. "That's a really good thing," the race
director said. "It is nice to show communities how much they have to
gain from events like a triathlon. Plus, it's nice for community
leaders in small towns to see how much they mean to the rest of the
state," he added.
Both of these bikes are in excellent shape. Neither has ever been
wrecked; they're clean, well cared for and in perfect working order.
The only signs of wear are some paint scratches at the dropouts.
Other than the pedals, they're all original parts. We're selling
them in preparation for moving to a city without a velodrome.
Please contact either Katrin (ksaile@...) or Jim (jgr4@...)
for more information.

I am selling my 58cm Trek Madone 5.9SL (Project One).
It has full Dura Ace components and Bontrager wheels/tires, carbon
bars. I purchased the bike last May from GNO Cyclery and have put

replacing the wheels that are shown in the pictures.
The reason for selling: I bought this bike for the main purpose of
