Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Dec. 7, 2004
"Children are made of eyes and ears, and nothing, however minute,
escapes their microscopic observation." Fanny Kemble

Don't forget Pearl Harbor Day is all day today. This is the day that
the Japanese Air Force invaded Hawaii and plunged the U.S. into World
War II.It's also the birthday of one of Louisiana's first
professional triahtletes: Jan Meador Ripple, who is now busily
involved in swim coaching.

This weekend is packed wtih fitness events like:
Saturday
Southern Masters Swimming Championships in New Orleans
Contact 504/469-3119 or email jerothjr@...
Sunday
Larry Fuselier State Championship 25km
The Du Bayou Off-Road Duathlon in East Baton Rouge Parish
The Club South Runners Half Marathon at Baton Rouge Beach.

I've had an interesting Multisport Report enewsletter problem
recently: it seems I've got more stuff to than ever to include in
these enotes. For those who've submitted material and found it not
used, please forgive me. This is a volunteer thing and I do have a
real job. Bear with me as I tend to this labor of love. I promise
there is nothing personal intended when your material for whatever
reason doesn't get included. Frankly, sometimes I just
miss things and sometimes I'm just busier than I care to be with lots
of irons in the proverbial fire. I am glad to know, however, that
apparently people at least skim these notes. I pray that there is
some value in these listings that seek to chronicle what's going on
in fitness circles around the state.

A good time was had by all apparently at running events held across
the state last weekend. Lots of folks showed up to run and race at
the BR Beach Marathon in the capital city and at Rusty Bex's Acadiana
Half Marathon. For me, the story of the weekend had to be the
Acadiana Half Marathon fourth place finish of Dutch-born Frank Beurre
(spelling?), a very competitive cyclists who rarely if ever runs.
He's tough on the bike; God help us if he gets into multisporting!
Also interesting is the fact that John Deshotel raced over the
weekend and went the right direction on the course!

Don't forget to check out the draft below of the list of fitness
events I've gathered so far. If there are changes, corrections,
additions, or whatever, do email me ASAP as I'm moving forward on the
annual printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report, which is
due out at the first of the year.

Swamp Stomp Half Marathon Set in Lake Charles
From Kathy Kiestler
Just wanted to let you know Lake Charles is having a half marathon
the same day as Baton Rouge's Club South Runners half marathon. Get
the details at www.lakearearunners.com/. We are giving away really
COOL beach towels with an embroidered alligator instead of a shirt.
For more information, call 337/491-3134 or pager 800/341-

La. Cycling Photos Wanted
From Bruce Wickert <blwickert@...>
The Louisiana Bike Map needs pictures of cyclists. (See note below)
Please send your e-photos to Brian Parsons, the DOTD bike ped
coordinator. Apologies in advance for multiple posts.

National Senior Olympic Notes for La. Cyclists
From Dave Glenn
If you have qualified and are planning to attend the National Senior
Olympics in Pittsburgh next year and you want any information that I
pick up, please reply to me so we do not clutter the Yahoo Groups for
the kids!
glenndsj@...

I was in Pittsburgh recently and took the opportunity to check (by
car) the expected (proposed) courses for the 40k and 20km road races
and the 5km and 10km time trial.

The 40km is twice around the 20km course. If I had the direction
correct (as clockwise), the road race course is hilly enough to drop
the heavier/weaker guys but does not have any real mountains that
would disperse the group totally. There was one fast down hill. There
were numerous intersections, so they will need many marshals.

The time trial courses were not flat and were not straight. The 5km
has six right-hand turns, two are about 75 degrees, but two are about
110 degrees. The largest rise is near the start and the last half is
flatter.

The 10km has five right-hand turns plus curves and more hills than we
(Louisiana racers) normally see for time trials. One downhill curve
seemed to be uncomfortably sharp and fast if you are not skilled on
the aero bars. Surfaces, at the start of the winter, were good with
one short shared section on the time trials slightly rough.

BR Area Meeting to Discuss Bike Routes
From Gil Morin
On Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. we will meet to discuss a
potential bicycle connection between downtown and Southern University
for the Baton Rouge area. We are meeting at the office of the
planning commission at 1755 Florida Boulevard, on the Third Floor.
Attached is an agenda for the meeting. Please contact me if you have
any questions regarding this matter.

3rd Annual Seaside Half Marathon Set in North Fla.
From Kelley Buzzett
I wanted to let your Louisiana's runners know that the 3rd Annual
Seaside Half Marathon & 5km run will be held on Sunday, March 6,
2005, in Seaside, FL, just outside Destin.

Last year's race brought more than 1,200 runners, and we expect 1,500
athletes to compete in this year's Half Marathon & 5km. We have been
busy getting the word out, and I assure you that the race (and the
events surrounding it) will be memorable. A total 100 percent of
race proceeds are donated to the Seaside Neighborhood School, a
public charter middle school located in the town of Seaside.

The town of Seaside, described as America's Classic Beach Town, is
situated on Florida's Panhandle between Panama City Beach and Destin,
directly overlooking the emerald-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
An award-winning community, Seaside is one of Florida's premier
holiday destinations. To learn more about Seaside, visit
www.seasidefl.com.

We hope to get race information out to your members and get listed in
your race calendar (if you have one) as soon as possible. I have
attached a one-page registration form and an information sheet that I
am hoping you can forward to your members. Please check our website at
www.seasidehalfmarathon.com, which has more detailed information /
registration forms, or register online at www.active.com.

Bike Open House in New Orleans Area Set
From Rick M <rickm@...>
This coming Sunday Bicycle Connection and Adam's Bicycle World in the
Greater New Orleans area are hosting the Litespeed/Merlin roadshow at
Audubon Park. between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. They will have
road, tri and mountain bike for us to demo ride around the park and
up on the levee. This is a 1st time event for this area, should be
pretty cool.

Come out ride the bikes of your choice and support their efforts.
If you're running the Larry Fusilier 25k on the levee come on over
after the race. Call Adam's Bicycle World or Bicycle Connection with
any additional questions.
