Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Dec. 1, 2004

"None of us suddenly becomes something overnight. The preparations have been
in the making for a lifetime."
Gail Godwin

Distance running events are focused on the fitness calendar. This coming
Saturday is the running of the Acadiana Half Marathon staged in Lafayette
and the Baton Rouge Beach Marathon. The New Orleans Track Club's Ole Man
River Half Marathon was among the earlier Louisiana distance running events
held and the February running of the Mardi Gras Marathon on Feb. 26th isn't
that far away either. With just cooler temperatures, multisporters are
running longer and cycling a bit less. It's a nice change of pace for many
fitness routines. There's just no excuse for not swimming....

Check out the attached preliminary draft -- very rough and very early -- of
Louisiana fitness event dates listed on various web sites across the world's
great cyberscapes. Please send any changes or additions to me asap for inclusion in the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report.

Ben Hawn is still working on drafts of Louisiana triathlete rankings and
duathlete rankings for the year. If you or someone you know ranked highly
and you want to make sure you're being appropriately considered, email Hawn
at
bwhawn@....

Michael Roper of Baton Rouge says come out and support local off-road bike
race on Sunday Dec. 5th just outside of New Orleans, for more info go to
www.nomambo.com.
Congrats to Guy and Lorie Mitchell for completing Ironman Western Australia in 13:12.38 and 14:35.32, respectively.

You know it's really fall in Louisiana when you see the little migratory
poule d'eau (pronounced "pull do") bobbing around Louisiana waterways. It's
nice running around the LSU Lakes reminded of seasonal changes and seeing
these small black birds, assorted migratory ducks, lots of big, white
pelicans, and the always-hungry and plentiful cormorants. Okay, that's it
for the view from the "slowing-down-on-the-run older crowd.

Du Bayou Off-Road Duathlon Set Dec. 12
From Jeff Diamond
BREC's Hooper Road Park in East Baton Rouge Parish will be the home of the
third Du Bayou Off-Road Duathlon. This event will start with a two-mile
trail run and transition into a 10-mile off-road bike ride, followed by
another two-mile trail run to the finish line. Participants may compete in
the solo division, in which each will complete all three legs of the race.
Team relays will consist of one runner and one off-road biker.

If you need a partner, that's not a problem. Call and teams can be arranged.

Awards will be given to the first 3 male and female finishers in each of the
following age groups: 12-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44,
45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85+.

All participants will receive an event hooded sweat shirt and a free post
race meal to be served at noon.

Additional information is available at
www.members.cox.net/dubayou/DU%20BAYOU%20DATES.htm.

This will be a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, so each participant must have
a USAT number or purchase a one-day license. If you are a current member of
USAT on race day, please bring your membership card and a photo ID. Without
both, you will have to buy a one-day license, per USAT rules. USAT fees may
be paid with your online registration (preferred method of registration) or
just prior to race day registration. Online registration is available at
www.active.com and we encourage you to use it, as the late registration fees
will apply after the Sunday preceding the event. Also, it is much smoother
for everyone involved.

Packet pick-up will begin at 6:30 a.m. the morning of the event and close at
8:30 a.m. Race day registration will begin at 6:30 a.m. the morning of the
event and close at 8:30 a.m.

The race will begin promptly at 9 a.m., so please arrive early enough to
pick up your packet and claim your spot in the transition area. Late
Registration (after Dec. 5th) is $38 for the solo division and $63 for the
relay division. Call 225/268-3599 or  225/766-8281.

New Orleans Metro Area Offers Off-Road Bike Race at Bonnet Caré Spillway
From Stu <info@...>
Anybody ready for a race? The trail got very little rain yesterday and the upcoming forecast looks sweet for the race - temperatures in the 60s. It's going to be a most-bodacious race!  As some of you may have heard there is a secret plan for the route for this race and we'll let you in on it. If you show up Saturday morning at 10 a.m. or some pre-race work at the trail (easy stuff - marking the trail and making sure everything is clear).

Make sure to come out Sunday morning to race, volunteer, or as a spectator - it's going to be a 'narly race!  They'll be music, food, drinks for all -- your local bike shops will be on hand with sale items on display.  We have gotten several calls recently from people driving in from out of town. We are expecting more entrants than the spring race -- and definitely some heated competition!

There will be a sign along Airline Highway at the turn to enter the Bonnet Caré Spillway (we may tie some balloons or something to it).  Race starts at 9 a.m. sharp. Registration begins around 8 a.m. For more race details check the site - http://www.nomambo.com/race_fall.html. Or give me a call at 985/688-6985.  Hope to see you all there!

We hope you can join us for what promises to be a well organized, fun race with great prizes & goodie bags. Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  I can be reached via email (DandEharris@...) or phone 225/413-2350.

Crescent City Cyclists Pine Ride Ride on Saturday, Dec. 11
From Salty Galvis <
lgalvis@...>
This is a notice that I'll be leading the CCC's Pine Ride again on Saturday,
Dec. 11. This is a beautiful ride with short routes of 34-37 miles,
medium routes of 51-54 miles, and long routes of 67-70 miles, with some
really good and challenging hills on all the routes, similar to many of the
roads out of St. Francisville.

Pine is about an hour's drive (50 miles) from the north end of the Lake
Pontchartrain causeway and about a 1.5-hour drive from Baton Rouge
(about 95 miles), on Louisiana Highway 62, which runs north off Louisiana
Highway 10, about halfway between Franklinton and Bogalusa. The ride will
start at 8 a.m. at Pine High School, which is located on Louisiana
Highway 62 about 3.4 miles north of Louisiana Highway 10, and just north of
the intersection of Highway 62 and Louisiana Highway 436.

For those looking for a nice change of pace or some tough training roads
(hint to those training for IMUSA at Lake Placid, NY), I recommend the Pine
Ride highly. Call for more details at 985/727.2345.

Update on Injured BR Cyclist Gary McCreary, William "Bo Bo" Anderson
From Cindy McCrary [ccmccrary@...]
The surgery on Gary McCrary's pelvis was completed late last week. According
to the
surgeon, his pelvis was broken in several places in the back and front.
Four screws were inserted in the back and a plate was placed in the front.
the doctor is confident Gary will have few difficulties down the road;
however, he will most likely develop arthritis as a result of the injury.

While he was in surgery, the urologist decided to repair the tear in his
bladder. Because of the hardware that was placed in him, they were
uncomfortable letting the bladder repair itself. They'll be monitoring this
carefully over the next few days to make sure the repair will prevent any
urine from leaking into the area where the repairs were made.

Depending how well he does over the next few days, he may be released from
Tulane to return to Baton Rouge (either the Baton Rouge General or an
inpatient rehab
facility) soon. The doctor said this could happen as early as this weekend.
He will be confined to a wheelchair for the next eight weeks as he can
place no weight on the pelvis until it's healed. The doctor also stated that
he'll be able to return home as soon as his upper body strength can
handle the transfers from the wheelchair to a bed, chair, etc.  Once his
pelvis has healed, he'll begin physical therapy/rehab. I have no doubt Gary
will sail through rehab . .  . .  Yesterday morning he was already
exercising his upper body using Ensure cans as weights!

Bo Bo Anderson is out of the hospital after six weeks in the hospital in New
Orleans. He was hurt in a work-related incident that put one of Louisiana
few professional multisporters in bed for a serious lower-leg injury. If you
would like to call him as he recovers from this serious injury, you can
reach him at  504/452-2856. He would love to hear from you and would
appreciate any encouragement as he faces a long season of recovery and rehab
work.

Blaine Augustine of Lake Charles Climbs Podium at Texas Cup MTB Series
Sent Via Darius Sampey
The weekend of Nov. 6-7 wrapped up the Texas Cup Fall Mountain bike Series
and Louisiana's own Blaine Augustine of Lake Charles finished up the series
with a fabulous ranking 2nd overall out of 38 men in the 40-49 male expert
category. His season goal was to win the Texas Cup series, a win he
came very close to with 227 points, only 32 points behind the leader.

Blaine started the series out third overall. He captured a sixth place at
Mamacita's Kelly Creek Classic and a fifth at the X Bar Shoot Out. With two
races to go, Blaine placed fifth at BTU Power Pedal with the eventual
overall
winner, Brian Zetter, finishing just in front of him. This put the pressure
on to work all that much harder to ensure Blaine didn't beat him in
the next races. Historically, Blaine had always won at the Piney Hills Fall
Classic XI in Ruston. He felt his familiarity with the course and his
ability to master it would help him capture a win. He finished in fourth place with a
time of 1:40:30.3.

The following were comments Blaine made to his coach before the race at the
Houston Big Ring Challenge and the Piney Hills Fall Classic:

"I'm going to practice the race course this Saturday for the next race. It's
a three-hour drive, but I think it's worth the drive and time. I raced there
last year and won. I would like to win the next two races and put the
pressure on the first place guy. The last race will be on my home course and
I
have won there three years in a row. I really like the course."

As demonstrated in Blaine's dialogue with his coach, he was extremely
dedicated to providing a top performance all season.

When asked about her athlete, CTS coach Rhonda Mayo said:

"I told him it was a true accomplishment and he should be proud! The fact
that his body and bike held up during the whole series without a DNF or a
flat tire is remarkable! To finish second out of 37 men racing in the series
is pretty awesome."

UNO Cycling Club Being Organized, Meeting Dec. 1
From Brooks Branham
The next UNO Cycling Club meeting will be at 5 p.m. at the UNO
Recreation/Fitness Center conference room, Wednesday Dec. 1, 2004. Come to
the meeting as we will be discussing important issues such as sponsorships,
team jersey, upcoming rides, the cycling website, and the 2005 race
schedule. We will also need a head count of how many people want UNO
Jerseys. We will be ordering them at the end of December or early January.
We will also have the pink club waivers for anyone who has not signed one.

++++++++++

That's it from here. Bless God America.
