Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Oct. 19, 2004
"The ideal man bears the accidents of life with dignity and grace,
making
the best of circumstances." Aristotle

Don't forget, you can check out these weekly enewsletters via
multisportreport.com. Like many folks, I continue to have challenges
with
email lists and may eventually rely entirely on the web site address
for
postings. For now, however, I continue with the enewletter format and
use
lists I've accumulated.

Well, there are lots of triathlons listed in our rankings so far for
the
2005 printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. If there are
others
to include which are not listed below, contact me or Ben Hawn.
Purple & Gold Triathlon, LSU in Baton Rouge
Abitaman Triathlon Series #1, 2,3
T-Gator Triathlon Series #1,2,3
Holy Toledo Triathlon
Rotary Club Triathlon at LSU-Eunice
Louisiana Triathlon at New Roads
Crawfishman Triathlon
Indian Creek Triathlon
Caney Lake Triathlon
River Cities Triathlon
Cajunman Triathlon
Nokia Sugar Bowl Triathlon
Tri-America
Meat Pie Triathlon
Games of Acadiana Triathlon
Gatorman Triathlon
Ragin Cajun Triathlon

We've not been able to find the Sunrise Triathlon series results and
would
appreciate it if someone could email results to us. These are events
usually
held in the Shreveport area, but we just can't find results and hate
to miss
a share of folks out of north Louisiana for our rankings. I'll let
you know
next week about our duathlon rankings listings. Again email me or Ben
Hawn
at b.w.hawn@.... If you have friends who don't read
emails, let
them know we're looking high and low for Louisiana's top-ranked age
groupers. If you're not sure whether you fit rankings details,
contact us.
When in doubt, write, spread the word; we don't won't to miss any
Louisiana
racer who has raced well at Louisiana events in 2004.

This Friday evening in Baton Rouge is the running of the Heritage 5km
and champagne stroll. It starts at 6 p.m. Get details at
www.midcityredevelopment.org. Also, on Nov 6 is the Dutchtown 5km in
Ascension Parish. Details are at
www.tigerpages.com/GreatGriffinRun.pdf.

Our calendar listing for the printed edition of the Louisiana
Multisport
Report is coming together much fast than I can recall in previous
years.
Seems like folks are planning much further ahead than in previous
years. If
you or your organization has an event listing to include in the
printed
edition of the magazine, do let me hear from you. The year 2005 looks
to be
a busy fitness event year, featuring a share of longer-distance
events with
championship status attached.

Event director Mike Shore reminds everyone into duathloning that he's
got a good one set for Oct. 23 in the Monroe area. Get the details
via <mikeshore@...> or phone 318/ 547-1927 or fax 318/ 329-
9563.

Word is there was a large contingent of Louisiana cyclists at Lance
Armstrong's Ride for the Roses staged in Austin, TX last weekend.
This weekend is the big Ironman-distance triathlon in Florida. Stay
tuned for Louisiana results next week.

There is lots of chat going on about Baton Rouge Bicycle Club's
annual JAM rides that take place during Thanksgiving week in and
around the Felicianas. We'll have a report and details next week.

Pan Am Masters Brings Out La. Cyclists in Cuba
From Farrell Crane
I just returned from the Pan Am Masters Cycling Championships in
Havana,
Cuba. Ryan (my brother) and I went down to compete in the track
events.
Quick results are that Ryan and I both won gold in match sprints and
kilo
(750m for me in international competition) . And we teamed up with
Adam
Smith from California to also take gold in the team sprint. Although
the
track is pretty nice, Cuba is a way different place.

Hawaiian Ironman Brings Out the Pride of Louisiana
From Salty Galvis
Congratulations to all those who did the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon,
especially those from the flatlands of Louisiana. The Hawaiian Ironman
Triathlon was apparently as tough as, or tougher than, it has been for
several years. The heat was high, and all the racers coming back to
transition from the bike were caked with salt on their clothes. And
the
wind on the bike course at times gusted to as much as 50 miles per
hour,
and, rather than being a cross-wind, as it apparently usually is, it
was a
headwind out of the southeast, so that everyone struggled coming back
from
the turnaround at Hawi.

Mandeville's Sue Boudreaux, sixth in her age group, said that at
points, she
was going downhill pedaling as hard as she could and barely going 8
mph. She
even saw one woman knocked to the ground and bloodied by a gust of
wind, and
another gust pushed Sue off the road and onto the shoulder. Lots of
people
were cramping as they finished the bike, and many had to be helped
off their
bikes at the dismount line and were very wobbly on their feet. And
then
during the run the humidity became very high, causing everyone to
sweat
profusely. Many people were relegated to walking.

At the awards banquet last night, Mike Reilly announced that 29
percent of
the female pros didn't finish the race, between 18 percent and 20
percent of
all participants didn't finish (approximately 255 out of 1,755 who
started),
and the pros' winning times were about 20 to 25 minutes slower than
usual.
So that makes Sue's, Chuck Farrell's, and other Louisiana triathletes'
accomplishments all the more spectacular.

There were many warm moments, humorous moments, and inspiring moments
throughout the race. Several of those were provided courtesy of Donnie
Jarrell, still: Sue said that lots of people got a kick and a smile
out of
Donnie's froggie when she tooted it at them on the bike.

Bayou State Racers Score Well at National Adventure Race Championship
Several Louisiana multisporters did well at the National Championship
Adventure Race held Oct. 9. Below is a race report.

Mud, Sweat and Cheers
From Rusty Bernard
One event that was not cancelled last Oct. 9 due to tropical
storm Mathew was the U.S. Adventure Racing Association Sprint National
Championship held right here in Louisiana at Mandeville's
Fountainebleau
Park. Weather would definitely be a factor this day as race directors
David Poleto and Larry Conner worked through the night redesigning
possible
routes and establishing new checkpoints to accommodate the constantly
rising
tidal waters inside the Park.

The two and their crew deserve credit
for redesigning, a truly challenging event where I/we felt safe in,
yet (as
advertised) produced finish times in the four to six-hour range.
There were
teams from Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia that were on hand for a shot
at one
of four
division titles up for grabs. Competitors ran, trekked and waded
(nearly
waist deep at times) on roads, trails and the ever so promising
looking (on
the map at least) short cuts throughout the competition.

Biking portions ranged from slippery double track, to the scenic
Tammany
Trace and its
muddy horse trails, to a couple of cleared power-line routes complete
with
plenty of ruts, roots and some "How deep is that one?" puddles/water
holes.
Back to the subject of water, racers were privileged this day to get
to
paddle our 16-foot canoes through some normally high and dry portions
of the
area to Bayou Cane (which today looked more like a two- lane wide
shipping
channel), south to Lake Ponchartrain and back, all the while keeping
eyes
open for the next (sometimes tricky) checkpoint along the way.

The first team to navigate through all 20 checkpoints and successfully
complete all mystery events was the Texas Team M.O.A.T (Dave Boyd,
Carlos
Ibarra
and Patti Plagman) crossing the finish line in four hours and
securing top
honors
for the co-ed open division. Next across the line and the new masters
national champions was Louisiana's Team Geezer (Shannon Allison,
Rosanne
Simons
and Rusty Bernard) just seven minutes behind the leaders. Third
across the
finish line and second co-ed
open former Fontainebleau Adventure Challenge champions team PBJ (Penn
Clark, Bill Salaun and Jessica Hemb). The next two teams to finish
would
be Baton Rouge's Team Magellan (Jeff Diamond, David Bogle and Misty
Richard)
and New Orleans Team Massey's/GNO (Laurence Cohen, Doug Cousmean,
Julie
Standing).

Interesting as both of these teams have been battling all season for
the
Louisiana
Adventure Racing series title to be decided on Nov. 14, 2004 right
back
in Fountainebleau Park.

With tidal waters rising at a rapid rate, teams finished and had to
get
packed up and out right away before gear was carried off in the moving
water. Literally.

Following the competition/race, participants were treated to one of
the
best post race parties and awards ceremonies I have ever been
privileged to
be a part of PAC (Pelican Athletic Club) was opened up to racers,
excellent food from Louisiana Grill was served and some amazing
awards and
random
prizes were distributed before we were entertained with live music
and more
refreshments. Full results at:

Residential Development Proposed Near Gardere and River Road in Baton
Rouge
From Karl Koch
I live on River Road right past Gardere Lane in the Baton Rouge area
where
lots of cyclists and runners spend lots of time. Next door to me is a
30+
acre field, which some developers have placed under contract. They
propose
to build 106 homes on 6,000 foot lots, generally in the 1,500 square
foot
range, with a single entry / exit onto River Road. This comes before
the
Planning Commission next Monday, October 25 at 5 p.m. I'm talking to
people
who use and enjoy River Road to try and mobilize some opposition to
this.
For more information, contact me at 225/819-0090 or 225/344-3555.

++++++++++

That's it from here. Bless God America.
