Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Oct. 6, 2004

"Those who have suffered understand suffering and therefore extend their
hand."
Patti Smith

Good luck to all those doing the last big competitive bike race at the New Orleans Rocktober Fest. Also, there are a few Louisiana folks headed to Hawaii for the famous and first IronMan Triathlon on the big island.

Watching the TV program American Chopper was interesting to me as a very
non-motor vehicle sort of guy who isn't terrible mechanical in any sort of
way. There was a group of guys out of New York who made a custom motor cycle
for cyclist Lance Armstrong to celebrate his Tour de France and presented it
on the Tonight Show. It was a great show that ended the six-time Tour de
France winner riding off on a fabulous yellow motor cycle. I think I'll
watch the show again.

The senior Olympic games from bowling to cycling to track and field is
stirring up a share of email activity -- at least in the egroups in which
I'm included. Way to go all you senior Olympians! I'll be right there among
them sooner than later.

Don't forget the USAT National Championship duathlon race on Nov. 6 in north
Louisiana. It's the Piney Hills Classic off-road duathlon in Ruston. Get the
details at
www.DLTmultisport.com or email DLTinfo@....

Also, there's not been much said or written, but the date of Nov. 5 was
listed as the next Baton Rouge Beach Marathon. If it's in print and on paper
is it official? Check it out at brbmarathon.com.

There were some great photos of the CajunMan Triathlon in Lafayette in most
recent edition of Runner/Triathlete News. I especially liked the brutal
grimace of Pat "Rocketman" Fellows of Baton Rouge.

Check out the Chalmette Track Club Pelicanman Duathlon results at:
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7172/.

Here's a swimming link that's good for anyone to stay in shape:
http://nola.com/search/index.ssf?/base/living-3/109653464928640.xml?nola

Oct. 23 is the date of Alexandria St. Rita School and England Airpark 5km.
Get the details at 318/445-7141.

Keep those 2005 fitness dates and event listings coming as the printed
edition of the annual publication of the Louisiana Multisport Report comes
together. Also, the 2005 edition ad rates are attached. The materials
deadline is later in 2004, but hopefully folks and organizations are busily
organizing their materials and messages now for the magazine. I hope folks
will consider advertising to promote their products and services and to
support the ongoing publication of the magazine, which is U.S. mailed free
to triathletes, runners, duathletes, swimmers, cyclists, adventure racers,
roller bladers, and all sorts of fitness folks all over the region.

Mid City Historical Group Staging 5km Run in Baton Rouge
From Kristi George
225/346-1000 ext. 103 or
kristi.george@...
On Friday evening Oct. 22, 2004 the Mid City Historical
Cemeteries Coalition and the Mid City Redevelopment Alliance are hosting the
first annual Mid City Heritage 5km Run and champagne stroll. The 5km will
begin at 6 p.m. and the champagne stroll will begin at 6:15 p.m.

The 5km race will begin at 18th Street at Laurel, through downtown, around
the state capitol, back down Main Street to 18th   Street. The champagne
stroll consists of a leisurely walk through historic Magnolia Cemetery, then
down Main Street to St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, and back. A staging area
will be awaiting the runners and strollers. Food, music, door prizes, and
awards will complete the night's events.

Advanced registration is recommended and includes a t-shirt and champagne.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Mid City Historical Cemeteries
Coalition, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization, in support of cemetery
restoration and preservation through heritage education.

Huntsville, AL Off-Road Bike Race Brings Out BR Riders
The Baton Rouge area was well represented in the winner's circle at the 2004
Huntsville Classic bike race this past weekend.

Sam Irwin, a longtime BRAMBA member, won the beginner master men's 50+ age
group race. He beat the second place finisher by three minutes and the third place finisher by six in a time of 51:38.

Mike Roper of the Bicycle Shop claimed the fourth place trophy in the sport
master men's 30-34 group out of a field of 33. He completed the 18-mile
course of piney woods single track in 1:22:39.

Josh Rosby, also of the Bicycle Shop of Baton Rouge, finished 10th in the expert senior
men's 19-29 year-old-group in  a time of 2:05.12. Austin, TX resident Jason Sager, an alumnus of the Bicycle Shop and
now competing professionally, won the expert xenior men's 19-29 division with a blazing time of 1:40:43 for the 27-mile course.

with a time of 1:26:51.

Feature Photo Essay, Article on River Road Features Cyclists
Newbie road rider and veteran off-road Sam Irwin has authored a

Country Roads. Photographs of the late Anthony Nolan's bicycle cross and the late Steve Seiden
and Timmy Cappo's "hat" memorial are featured in the photo essay.

all the places they can take us. Serious and funny, mountain bikes and road
bikes, singles and tandems, men and women, young and old--the whole world of
bikes and the people who love them." The collection is edited by Garth
Battista who also chose the stories.

North Florida Hurricanes Impact Fitness Event Calendar
From Beverly McElwee <
bmcelwee@...>
Thanks for all the Louisiana support following Hurricane Ivan. The running scene will
definitely be different around here for months to come.

I know lots of New Orleans people enjoy the Navarre Beach weekend.  Right
now, it is questionable.  Roads are washed out and the Holiday Inn is
damaged.  We won't say the race is cancelled until we know for sure that we
can't do it.
Another race New Orleans comes over for is our Fiesta Run in early May.
That's far enough out that there should be no problem.  The Fiesta course
was going to have to change this year anyway, as the Cervantes Street bridge
has been demolished for a scheduled replacement.  The Seafood Festival which
was to have been last weekend was postponed.  Shirts and awards had already
been purchased, so we'll hold the race later - probably Nov. 13.  Our
fall cross-country run cannot be held at the University of West Florida as
usual due to heavy damage to the course.  We can probably set a course at
Brosnaham County Park.   See our website for daily updates.
www.pensacolarunners.com

As far as tangible assets, the club came thru pretty well.  We have two
equipment trailers which had been moved for safety and they are fine.  I
don't think we lost any equipment.  Our budget will be tight next year due
to lost race revenue, especially if we can't do Navarre, but we'll manage.

The Capt'n Fun Runners (of which I am also a member) have lost our meeting
place at the beach for the foreseeable future.  We resumed regular Wednesday
runs this week at Capt'n Funs Downtown, which is here in downtown Pensacola.
The Bushwacker Run is probably too far in the future to be impacted by the
storm.  Other scheduled weekly runs have resumed or will resume any day now.

Tell all our running friends in Louisiana we welcome them back next year, and that
we'll be over as always for events such as CCC and the marathon.  Thanks and call 850/434-8600 ext 201for more information.

La. Representatives Needed for Triathlon Board
From Bob Siegerson
We need some of you Louisiana folks to step forward and nominate yourself to the
USA Triathlon regional board. According to the by-laws, you must notify the board of
your intention to run by Nov. 1, so you have a couple of weeks to
think it over. There will be six spots opening up with one having to go
to Arkansas so we need some people to step up to
throw their helmets in the ring.

The duties are not that difficult. You need to attend four meetings a
year and most are in conjuntion with a triathlon or duathlon. This year
we met in Shreveport on River Cities weekend and we are meeting in
Dallas, this weekend, for Texas Man and Texas Woman.
We only have to people from Louisiana on the board now, me and Terry
Kinkaid from Monroe, and we need more .

If you have any questions, please call me at 985/373-1233 or e-mail me
at
sigerson@....
