September has always been an interesting month of training for me as I wind down my personal race season. While there are lots of my training buddies who pick up and extend training for upcoming Ironman-distance event, I find myself scaling back my workouts.
So, as the days get shorter and the week-day group rides thin with fewer and fewer riding, I look back on how my season went. I find that if I don't take a break, my body eventually forces its own break with or without my conscious consent. It was a great year to race in Louisiana and it's far from being finisher. Race and event calendars were packed and provided lots of options for runners, riders, swimmers, multisporters, adventure racers and more. The events are getting better and better each year, which puts the appropriate and competitive pressure on race directors to provide more and more reasons for racers to choose one event over another one.
While I myself sense I'm getting slower as I approach age 50, I'm finding racers of all ages getting faster and racing smarter thus allowing them to participate in more and more events throughout the year. The human body is an amazing thing and multisporting emphasizes the miracle of life at each workout and each race.
Thank God Louisiana was spared from Ivan the terrible hurricane. Many of our neighbors to our east, however, were not as fortunate. Our prayers are with them as they recover. I hope we get out of this hurricane season sooner than later.
Good luck to all those doing fitness events this weekend, like the MeatPie Triathlon in Natchitoches and the Symphony Run 5km in New Orleans.
Santa Rosa Triathlon Cancelled
From Eric McCue
cknight62@...
I was asked to get a message out of behalf of Charlie and Ann Knight, the
race directors for the Santa Rosa Island Triathlon. In the wake of
Hurricane Ivan, Charlie and Ann have found themselves with no phone,
computer, power, water, etc.. Furthermore, at this point the beach/much
of the race course is unusable/unreachable and outlook for the near future
is not good. Thus, I regret to inform you that the race has been
cancelled.

Directions: Get to I-10. Then take the I-510 south exit to
Chalmette. This exit puts you on Parish Road. After
the big gray bridge I believe there are three traffic
lights before Judge Perez. Take a left on Judge Perez
(there are gas stations on three corners & Wallgreens on
the fourth). Go about eight miles on Judge Perez. After
you go over a small violet canal overpass (you will
bike this overpass a few times) about a mile up look
to your left and you will see transition on the side
of the road.

New Orleans Filled with Multisport Racing Opportunities
From Laurence Cohen
We New Orleanians have survived the hurricanes -- so far. It seems like most
New Orleanians said "Ivan to run away from the storm." Not me. We are
hunkered down for the duration.

Two weekend ago, it was indeed a fabulous time of multisporting here in the
Crescent City. Multisport race director Billy Burke and his hard - working
minions played host to nearly 800 multisporters on Sept. 11, Saturday and
Sept. 12, Sunday. I heard the Girl Power Tri was a success also. It was a
real draw for novices. The weather was great. All I heard on Sunday at the
Nokia Sugar Bowl Tri was how much fun the women had Saturday.
Sunday's race was a weather experience. starting with three-to five-foot
waves to get your heart pumping. I heard at least a dozen racers abandoned
the swim -- no shame there since it was as rough a swim start as I have
seen in a long time. The wind was howling from the east on the Lakefront
bike ride. Then came the rains, making for interesting cornering on a twisty
section around the UNO arena. Thankfully, the cloud cover held up during the
run, otherwise, it would have been brutally hot.
I was lucky enough to finish as the top masters racer. I was lucky because
Penn Clark of the Northshore, who looked like a bullet on his bike, as went
by me early in the ride, flatted about half way through and did not finish.
I think he would have contested for an overall spot. Brian Bourgeois, a
sub-11-hour Ironman Lake Placid finisher, took a strong third place behind
two younger speedsters. He is a local physician who dispenses some great
medical advice over the e-waves. Obviously , he practices what he preaches.
There was another multisport race here this weekend. The City Park Urban
Adventure race was held on Saturday. This is the fourth race in the six race
series. Event director Dave Poleto and his volunteers did a great job
coordinating a course that stretched from the park to the French Quarter and
through the central business district. Thirty three teams participated in
this event. I am proud to report that the team I race on, Massey's
Professional Outfitter's/GNO Cyclery , won the overall title by a mere 45
seconds. Teammates Brian "the HORSE" Hudson and Santilla "the HUN" Victorian
dragged me through nearly four hours of racing in the heat and humidity to
win our third of four races in the series. These 48-year-old legs were worn
out after this weekend's "double", but with the great atmosphere generated
by all of the competitors, it really was enjoyable.
