"When enthusiasm is driven by confidence any goal can be obtained." Robert E. Regent
Last Sunday's DuBayou #1 brought out some hearty souls to run two miles, crash through hills, trails, and bogs on bikes and finish with another trail run two miles in Hooper Road Park in Baton Rouge. Results are attached. Thanks to Jeff Diamond for putting this first in a series of off-road duathlons.
Grand masters rider Julius Beard is riding a cross-country tour and should be in Louisiana soon. Capital city riders have been missing the fast and fit rider this summer, but no one realized he was riding cross-country with the America by Bicycle – Great Mississippi River Ride. They started in Minneapolis on Aug. 21 and hope to make it to New Orleans on Sept. 15, 1,700 miles later. The ride leader is updating his website daily with pictures and ride summaries at: http://bamacyclist.com/journal2004/Mississippi04/2004GMRR.htm
I hear the new LSU track coach is including a "public" race as part of an upcoming LSU cross country meet in Baton Rouge? Anyone got the details?
It's that time of the year to start thinking about year-end rankings of runners, riders, swimmers, multisporters, roller bladers, off-road riders, etc. So that means, too, that it's time to start thinking about buying an ad in the printed edition of the Louisiana Multisport Report. I've got some early commitments for the publications, but it sure would be nice to have some more commitments before the November, 2004 ad commitment date arrives. With more and more people -- young and "mature" -- out and about on roads, velodromes, pools and paths, the multisport world is booming.
I've got to believe that all these running, cycling, and swimming clubs have a budget that could afford an ad in our annual publication. We've already got a share of fitness dates listed on a growing 2005 event calendar and no doubt there are opportunities to reach markets not considered before in publicizing all sorts of events. For details on the annual publication due out in early 2005, email me or call me at the number listed at the bottom of this enewsletter.
For the second year, I am putting together a virtual or fantasy Vuelta à Espana to raise money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation. This year promises to be better than ever, with sponsors offering cool prizes for those who win the day, week and overall event. It's a great diversion from the ho-hum workaday world, and a great way to learn about one of the best races in the world.
Here are the details... The 2004 Fantasy Vuelta a Espana begins Saturday, Sept: 4th. Proudly Sponsored by: BicycleShop.com EatatRocket.com Louisiana MultisportReport.com Email me at davidealex@... if you want more information.
Second, select a team name, be creative here. Third, e-mail me your team name and the names of nine riders which will represent your squad for the first week of the race and then choose another team for each week of the event. Keep in mind, once you use a rider on your team, you cannot use them again in another week.
That's where the strategy comes in. Each week, you must pick a different team of nine. Your first team is due by noon on Friday, Sept. 3rd; your second team is due by noon Friday, Sept. 10, and your third team is due noon Friday, Sept. 17th.
Lastly, sit back and enjoy the race while your team competes for a number of great prizes (chipped in by my wonderful sponsors). Granted, it's not on OLN, but it's almost as fun via the web.
Triathletes, get ready to race and check out www.nokiasugarbowltriathlon.com or www.girlpowertri.com for details on an event to remember. You can also download a printed application at the website, or call 866/454-6561 to request an application.
Don't miss the 'What happens on Race Day' section on the Girl Power Triathlon website, designed specifically for novice triathletes. See you on the weekend of Sept. 11th & 12th.

TriAmerica Puts on Northshore Race for Louisiana Triathletes
From Billy Preau
Not everyone could go to Destin this past weekend to race (although it is a great place to have a triathlon). Some of us stayed home for the first TriAmerica Olympic Distance Triathlon in Mandeville. I don't know about the politics with USAT and this guy who put on the event, but he put on a first class triathlon.
There were lots of volunteers at water stations almost every mile of the 10km run, a water bottle exchange at the 12-mile turn around on the bike, lots of support via boats and kayaks on the swim. Then to top if off, event organizers e-mailed participants the results personally the night of the race -- results up a few hours after the race on line. Everyone got a finishers medal around your neck at the end of the race, and winners got a plaque (five-deep per age group).
Post race party included beer, watermelon, other fresh fruit, pizza, animal crackers, beer, and beer! It was my first ever Olympic-distance tri and I learned a lot. It's just a long, sprint-distance tri, no going easy here like a half Ironman, just go, go, go! To make it even more enticing, event organizers had a sprint-distance tri going on at the same time as the Olympic-distance tri! Results can be found at www.triamerica.com here.
Urban Adventure Race Coming in October
From Bradun Dunbar
An event is upcoming in New Orleans on Oct. 23rd, 2004 called Urban Challenge and has been featured in Runner's World as well as many other publications. I have raced it several times and found it to be fun, very unique, and challenging. Two person teams race around the city (distances on foot are between 6 and 12 miles or so) finding checkpoints (determined by solving puzzles, questions, etc.) Use of support staff (internet access is a must as is communication via phone) is encouraged and fun is had by all.
The object of Verizon Wireless Urban Challenge is to visit 12 checkpoints in correct order and return to event headquarters. The first team back wins. The only allowed methods of travel are by foot or local public transportation -- city bus, ferry, train, or trolley. Any and all other methods of transportation, including, but not limited to, any form of private transportation, car, taxicab, limousine, skateboard, scooter, motorcycle, skates, pedicab and rickshaw are strictly prohibited. Any team using a disallowed form of transportation will be immediately and summarily disqualified.
Two-person teams on foot. Use LG camera phones from Verizon Wireless to get info and take photos of yourselves at each checkpoint; Solve clever clues to find unmarked checkpoint locations; Solve clues with any means necessary: call friends, use the Internet, trade with other teams, ask folks on the street…. Trivia Challenge at start of race determines order — savviest teams get a head start. National champions win $50,000 cash! The website is http://www.urbanchallenge.com/index.shtml

Triathletes Subjects Sought for Study
From Mathew Luebbers I am looking for survey subjects and publicity help if possible, for a graduate school research study. Anything you could do would be appreciated.
The study is investigating the quantity of training performed by athletes training for an Ironman-distance triathlon. For the purposes of this survey an Ironman-distance race is one with race distances of a swim of 3.8 km (2.4 miles), a bike of 180 km (112 miles), and a run of 42.2 km (26.2 miles).
Training data will be collected for any athlete that has started an Ironman-distance triathlon in the past five years (2000 - current).
