Kenny Dunaway's Multisport Report

Aug. 25, 2004
"The thoughts you think will irradiate you as though you are a transparent vase." Maurice Maeterlinck

Change is in the air as the days grow just a bit shorter, which means long
week-day bike rides are over and it's time to take a step or two longer on
the run or stroke more in the pool. Such is the life of outdoor fitness
training. The week day rides across the state seem to have included lots
more folks in group bike rides. Let's see if the organized regroup for the
big weekend rides that continue through cooler days in the fall.

Janel Mumme of St. Bernard Parish reports that the Pelicanman Duathlon date
is set for Sept 19. Fliers are at New Orleans Track Club events and the
Chalmette track club website. Also, Mumme attached a most interesting note
on her "vacation." Check it out as attached.

Nov. 6 is the date of the LSU Triathlon on campus in Baton Rouge, according
to Ben McGuire. He is working on dates for the spring, 2005 event. It's a
laid-back, low-key sort of event; so, you have to be a bit more active in
getting details on the event. Call 225/578-8601 for details. Does Tulane,
McNeese, ULM, ULL, Nichols have such "mini" triathlons on their college
campuses? Share the dates if you know them.

Darrell Henry noted that Baton Rouge adventure racer Barb Dutrow finished the Leadville 100 mile trail run last Sunday in Colorado. Her time was 29 hours and 29 minutes placing her 9th in her age group. The cutoff for the race is 30 hours. Of the roughly 450 runner there were only 190 finishers. This race starts in Leadville, Colorado at roughly 9,000 feet of elevation and goes up over mountain passes of 12,000 feet not just once, but twice. This race is considered one of the most difficult trail races in the country.

RocketKidz Triathlon for Youth Goes Well in Baton Rouge Last Sunday
From Marc Breecher
Everything went perfect with only a two kids out of  more than 100 had a couple of little road rash bumps on them from a tumble or two. I worked the start/finish line at the transition area for the bike route.

The little ones in the six-year-old group were fun to watch in their special little outfits.  I didn't know they made spandex bike shorts that small. Some of the kids could really move on their bikes and some of the older kids were riding the youth size road bikes. Everyone received a medal when they crossed the finish line and the top spots received a plaque.

This is really something see with these kids trying so hard to swim, bike and run and there were plenty of parents, grandparents and volunteers to cheer them on. Congratulations to all those with BRTriathlon group that made this second youth triathlon in Baton Rouge happen. Some said the goodby bag given to the kids was as nice as Sportspectrum's River Cities Triathlon in northwest Louisiana.

It's interesting to see the names of the kids that performed strong; that genetics thing is really fascinating isn't it?

Off-Road Duathlon Set for Weekend at Hooper Road Park in Baton Rouge Area
From Darius Sampey
OK, kids, it's time to come out and support your best off-road runner and rider friend, Jeff Diamond. It's been a long time coming, but this race is happening. Spread the word or I'm going to take a bath on this thing. I really want to see the team relay thing go over big. I think that'll be a lot of fun. Post the link to the flier anywhere you can think of and email it to everyone you know. Thanks for your help! Get dirty!

Du Bayou Off-Road Duathlon set Aug. 29 at 9 a.m. at BREC’s Hooper Road Park. The site will be the home of the inaugural Du Bayou Off-Road Duathlon, a two-mile trail run, a 10-mile mountain bike ride, finishing with a final two-mile trail run. Participants may compete in the "solo division", in which each will complete all three legs of the race. Team relays will consist of one runner and one mountain biker.

All participants will receive an event T-Shirt and a ticket redeemable for a free post race meal to be served at noon. If you plan to attend the meal, please RSVP to dubayou@....

This will be a USA Triathlon sanctioned event, so each participant must have a USAT number or purchase a one-day license. If you are a current member of USAT on race day, please bring your membership card and a photo ID. Without both, participants must purchase a 1-day license, per USAT rules. USAT fees may be paid with your online registration (preferred method of registration) or just prior to race day registration. Also, it is much smoother for everyone involved.

Halloween  Cycling Tour - It's a Go!

From Jim Turner
Things are coming together for a planned tour for bicycle club members only.
As always, there are some questions, for example:
1) Where do we overnight in St. Francisville?
We will spend the night in Lake Rosemound north of St. Francisville where
the fireplace will be going and fine dining is available.

2) Is there enough room for everyone to sleep?
Yes, this shouldn't be a problem. But be sure to bring a sleeping bag.

3) How will we transport our gear?
a) Those starting from Hammond will be transported by Hazlett Shuttle
Service to Lake Rosemound.
b) Gear from Lake Rosemound to Natchez State Park will be provided by J.B.
Hauling and Transport Service.
c) The same two parties are under contract to transport our gear back.

4) Where will we overnight in Natchez?
Here are some options:
Natchez State Park - cabins (Cabin 1 is reserved; no vacancies)
Natchez State Park - tent camping **
Motels
Bed & Breakfasts
** The weather should be perfect for camping and camaraderie
5) How difficult will the cycling pace be?
This event has been set up as a tour, not a race. I know some will be going
at a very hard pace; that's fine, each to his own.  Lynn and I will be doing
between 15 and 19, with several stops for pie, ice cream, freedom fries,
lunch, oyster po-boys, etc.  This is one ride we want to enjoy;  you'll have
the whole day to do it.  The weather should be somewhat cool, and the leaves
on the trees will be changing colors.

From Lake Rosemound to Natchez, our Baton Rouge Guardian Angel will be
providing sag service. You'll be in good hands. What we don't have:  sag
service from Hammond to Lake Rosemound. If anyone is interesting, and
willing, please let me know (225/567-5294;
lynnjt@... ).

If you have intentions of doing the tour, you should let me know ASAP due to
the limited room to carry and transport gear.  First come, first served!

The Schedule:
Friday, Oct. 29 - Hammond to Lake Rosemound
Saturday,  Oct. 30 - Lake Rosemound to Natchez
Sunday, Oct. 31 - Ride Natchez and surrounding area
Monday, Nov. 1 - Natchez to Lake Rosemound
Tuesday, Nov.  2 - Lake Rosemound to Hammond
Options are open - you may do all or any day or part of the tour.
Call  225/567-5294 or email
lynnjt@... for more information.
Mardi Gras Marathon Plans for 2005 Underway
From Mike Cambre
The New Orleans Track Club (NOTC) is proud to announce that the countdown
has begun and the excitement is building as we approach the race date of
Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 for the 40th Anniversary of the Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi
Gras Marathon, Half-Marathon, 5km, and kids mile run.

Why run the Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras Marathon?  Here are the top 10
reason:
10.  You will experience the 40th anniversary running of one of the oldest
marathons in the United States.
  9.  Because in New Orleans we laissez les bons temps roulé (let the good
times roll)
  8.  You may even catch a pair of Mardi Gras beads on race weekend.
  7.  Louisiana became the 18th state and you are shooting for all 50, aren't
you?
  6.  Most of the spectators in the French Quarter still have not been to
bed but waited up to cheer you on.
  5.  You will run through many historic neighborhoods, including the French
Quarter, Marigny, Bayou St. John and Garden District.
  4.  This could be your first marathon and hurricane in the same weekend .
we mean the one that you drink.
  3.  Where else can you cross the finish line in a dome the size of 13
acres and 27 stories tall?
  2.  How does Coffee and Beignets, Oyster Po-boys, Seafood Gumbo and
crawfish étouffée sound?
And the number one reason to run the 2005 Nokia Sugar Bowl Mardi Gras
Marathon.
  1.  Where else can you have this much fun before, during and after a
marathon? Only in New Orleans!!
Please share this information with your club members and add this to your
activities calendar. For more information on the race and a registration
form, go to
http://www.mardigrasmarathon.com or to contact us, send email to

La. Cajun from LaFourche Parish Shines in Florida
From Neil Robichaux
(Living in Florida)
Since so many of you are aware of my extreme modesty, you can understand
that it is very difficult for me send this bit of information, which may be considered somewhat boastful.
However, my therapist, who is helping me overcome my excessive shyness and lack of self-esteem,
said sharing this accomplishment could aid in my recovery process. Thanks for helping
guys...maybe one day I will overcome !

But, with being so busy, and the threat of an approaching hurricane, I was
delayed in doing so.... So, check it out whenever you have time.

Korean War Veterans Who Are Marathoners: Special Event Set Sept. 19
From Roger "
rpouyadou@...
Life is hectic here in Ulsan, Korea as Hyundai completes final out-fitting of the world's largest FPSO, a very big ship at 81,000 tons, destined for Angola 15 sometime in the first quarter of 2005...that is, barring any further close calls with typhoon such as Mika that whip-lashed the coast early last week.

More importantly, a note regarding an incredible marathoning opportunity to pass around if you would be so kind. I just signed up for the first "Peace Marathon" being run along the DMZ, separating North and South Korea. Since I have three uncles, one still living, that fought to maintain the independence of South Korea and freedom from Communist rule, I thought I would run this event to honor their courageous efforts.

The race will be held Sept. 19, and more information can be gotten from the web-site: www.peace-marathon.com. If anyone is interested they can contact me at this email, but they must hurry since registration closes on Aug. 31.

I asked the race director if I could raise an American flag with the honorable names of those courageous American soldiers who came from so very far away to fight along side the South Koreans in this conflict. The race director said that would be an great honor to all peace loving South Koreans for me to do so.

Again, at the completion of this race at the DMZ I will erect an American flag with these names to honor their personal commitment and sacrifice to free people, in free nations throughout the world...."No matter where and no matter when!

Austrian Kate Allen Snags Olympic Gold Medal
Austrian Kate Allen has snatched the gold medal in the Women's Triathlon in spectacular fashion, propelling herself into the lead for the first time in the race in the finish chute, inside the last few hundred meters of the race.

She's Austrian, not Australian (for those geographically challenged, that's the German-speaking country next to Germany. You, know, it's the place where the California Governor grew up).

Starting the 10km run 2:48 behind the leaders, 35-year-old Allen was unstoppable, posting the fastest run split of 34:13.00, and charging past ten other competitors on her way to the finish line at the Vouliagmeni Olympic Center.

The Austrian's surge to the line relegated Loretta Harrop into second place by 6.72 seconds, after the Australian had led the 50-strong field from the water after the 1500m swim.

Harrop headed the field from the moment she exited T1, the swim to bike transition, working first with American Sheila Taormina during the 40km cycle leg, and then building and sustaining a 30-second lead until the the final 2km of the 10km run leg.

With air temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius (which means it was hot), early race conditions for the mid-morning start time were mild for competitors, with only light breezes affecting the open water swim leg.

A small group of nine swimmers, including Harrop, Barbara Lindquist (USA), Taormina, Rina Hill (AUS), Jill Savege (CAN), Silvia Gemignani (ITA), Joelle Franzmann (GER), Jodie Swallow (GBR) and Susan Williams (USA) broke away rounding the final swim buoy, but Harrop left the water first and soon attacked the 700 metre hill on lap one of the cycle leg, dragging the American trio with her.

With Williams crashing after the first climb, a two woman breakaway formed after Lindquist also dropped off the pace, leaving Harrop and Taormina out in front.

At one stage during the third lap of five, the race leaders had extended their lead to 48 seconds over the chasing pair of Americans, with a further 2:25 back to the main group of riders.

In laps three, four and five, Belgian cycle specialist Kathleen Smet attempted to bridge the gap between the main pack and Williams and Lindquist, getting to within 9 seconds on lap three, before losing ground.

On lap four of the five-lap bike leg, Taormina dramatically dropped back to her pursuing team mates, leaving Harrop to enter T2 on her own with a slender 15-second lead.

Harrop flew out of T2 to a commanding lead of around 30 seconds, pushing hard up the slight inclines to stay ahead of Williams, who had smoothly moved into second place halfway through the run.

With Lindquist fading and Taormina falling off the pace set by Williams, Harrop's lead with 4km to go looked unassailable until the flying Austrian Allen rocketed past the crowd going into final 3.3 km lap, having picked up just over two and a half minutes in the first two run loops.

In a thrilling conclusion, Allen eventually passed a tiring Harrop on the long final downhill with the finish line in sight, crossing in 2:04:43.45 to the Australian's 2:04:50.17.

On a day when an American triathlete was never far from the lead, Williams (2:05:08.92) managed to hang on to the bronze medal position in front of Smet (2:05.35.89), and a charging Nadia Cortassa (ITA), who posted the second fastest run split.

Lindquist finished ninth, while Taormina faded to 23rd position in the final lap of the run. Forty-four out of the 50 women who started the tough Vougliagmeni course finished within 2:22:39.28

++++++++++

That's it from here. Bless God America.
