Louisiana's finest multisport coach is representing our Bayou State in the U.S. Olympic team effort. She is Karen Daigle of Houma and she has been in Athens for the Olympics where she has been a crucial part of the support staff of the American
contingent of athletes. She has some fancy scientific credentials that make
her important to expert support and training for American athletes. And
where did she get her degree and scientific credentials to capably help all
of America's fine athletes? LSU of course. It's been fun getting her emails
and reading a Louisiana perspective on the games in Greece.

Lafayette will be holding its Games of Acadiana this weekend, featuring a triathlon. Everything is set in and around the Cajun Dome in the heart of Lafayette. Check lafayettefitness.org for details.
Congratulations to the triathletes who did the new (second season I think?) Arkansas half-Ironman-distance race last weekend. I read where lots of Louisiana folks participated and a few even raced.
Lots of races are going on this time of the year to mark back to school or end of the summer. Check your local fitness club web sites and consider volunteering to keep the local web sites up to date.
Susan Hayden of Baton Rouge is once again leading the charge for this weekend's youth triathlon held at the Pennington complex on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge (which is near the Baton Rouge velodrome). Reports are that the field is already filled up. Check batonrougetri.com for details.

New Orleans Critical Mass Bicycle Ride Set
The New Orleans Critical Mass bicycle ride meets 5:30 p.m. in Jackson Square
in front of St. Louis Cathedral, with big rides the last Friday of every
month, and mini-rides every Friday. Come on out for a fun bicycle ride to
support bicyclist rights and meet interesting people!
The next big ride is Aug.27 -2004.
In New Orleans, more than one percent of people ride to work on a bicycle
(compared to a national average of .04 percent). Also, more than 25 percent of residents
simply do not have a car. Bicyclists deserve to feel safe on city streets and not as
targets of motorist aggression and ignorance.
Critical Ride Goals
* Increase biker visibility, and hence safety!
* Get More People on Bikes
* Make cycling fun!
* One Less Motor Car on the Roads for Safety and the Environment
*Encourage community-based organizing
Thanks Goes Out to Runners in Elvis Lives Event
From Pamela Danner, pamelaida@...

We wish to thank everyone who came out for the Elvis Lives run. Our
turnout was the largest we have had in years, and it was much more than we
expected since we were scheduled on the same night as another large
race.
I would like to thank John Michel and Crown Beverage for donating the
beer. The beer, peanuts, GU, grapes and fried chicken was completely
gone at 10 p.m. when we finally pulled out of the Lakefront parking
lot. All that was left to pick up was two Gatorade powerbars and a
couple of cans of diet Coke.
And thanks to John Melvin for aid with the sound system. Even though the
cool breeze made it hard to hold announcement, it did not interfere
with Elvis' singing.
Next year's race will again be scheduled at the same time to
commemorate the anniversary of the King's passing. Hope everyone can
make it.

Alcatraz Tri Report from a Louisiana Perspective
From Eric Pesetsky, 504/352-6300
Just a short update on the "Escape the Rock Triathlon" I did in San
Fransico recently.
This race is 24 years old and this is the first
year they had to reroute the swim from Alcatraz. The tides were perfect
but heavy fog rolled in and obscured any ability to see and navigate, so
the swim was routed around the breakwater off Fisherman's Wharf. Still it
was 1.2 miles, but that's not as great a story. It was so cool to be swimming past
tall ships at the Maritime Park. With a chilly and crisp 2.5-mile run to the bike
transition, there were three very hilly bike loops with hairpin curves
galore for 18 miles. Then we faced the most aggressive trail run I've done. We went up
stairs for about fiv stories, followed along a trail that followed the aggressive bike
course, then went back down stairs (in sand) to the beach. From there we went across
the beach for more than a mile before climbing up another set of stairs and up another hill. Finally
we returned for a total of 7.5 miles on the run. In a way only multisporters can appreciate it was a very fun and challenging course that I would recommend. But this is the quiet race without TV coverage.
There was very nice support and very kind and fit fellow triathletes.

Individual Cycling Time Trial in LaPlace Draws Big Crowd
From Todd Herbet
I just wanted to thank everyone who came out and supported one of the
largest turnouts for the district time trial I've seen since I have been racing in the state.
We were a little overwhelmed with the turnout coupled with the fact that
alot of age groups had to be scored so the results were a little slow
getting out. I want to also thank all the volunteers who helped administer
the race and a special thanks to Robin Robert and Randy Legeai who held our
hands from start to finish.
I am hoping to make LaPlace the annual venue for the district time trial and would appreciate feed back on the event as we prepare for the 2005 event.
