"We cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are." Depree
With the River Cities Triathlon two weeks old now, it's already time to
start thinking about the 2005 event. It will be the 25th version of the event
and entries will be at a premium. There are plans in the works to get a
famous guy to come who set and still holds an age group course record there;
his name is Lance Armstrong. Be on the lookout all year for details on what
will no doubt be a huge event for multisporters in Louisiana in 2005.
I hope lots of folks got to see the August issue of Runner's World for the
story by Lance Armstrong's ex-wife. To me the interesting part of her story
on running her first marathon was what she didn't write about the six-time
winner of the Tour de France. While there was mention of the cycling giant,
what she wrote was interestingly sparse. Also, Joan Nesbit-Mabe, a former
U.S. Olympian, shared in the same issue the following thought: "Running
should be a passion, not an obsession. Obsessions burn out while passions,
despite the occasional flicker during one of life's storms, blaze on and
on."
Mark your calendars now:

The LaMBRA competitive cycling team time trial was brutal held outside Baton Rouge on the River Road, but I and other "wanna be's" seemed to have survived. It's amazing the folks who turn out for events that are called "championships." Todd Herbet of St. Bernard Parish is the point man in putting on this Sunday's individual cycling time trial championship in LaPlace. So this weekend's bike racing folks get to hurt all by themselves; they don't have to share the pain with three other folks.
Congrats to Louisiana's own multisport event director Billy Burke, who works out of Metairie. Burke successfully staged the U.S. triathlon Olympic trials and reports are his event management team did a terrific job on the event and thus helped prepare U.S. triathletes for the games in Athens, Greece (I felt a need to clarify that the Olympics is not in the U.S. states of Georgia or Texas -- Americans can be so geographically challenged, you know).
Lots of races in running, cycling, multisporting coming up and even more coming for what we hope are cooler days in the fall. Stay tuned to area fitness-related web sites for details. By the way, have you thanked your area fitness web masters for keeping all their sites up to date and packed with event information and race results? Show some love folks!

Two Men, Two Women Needed for Hood To Coast Relay
From Andrew Lilly <alilly@...>
What was originally a California and Oregon-based Hood To Coast Relay team
has become a New Orleans-based team.
Plans are well underway for the world's largest relay, taking most more than
24 hours to complete, on average, running from roughly halfway up Mt. Hood,
at Timberline Lodge, 197+ miles, to the Pacific coast at Seaside, OR.
Twelve-person teams (ours is six men/six women) run three legs apiece,
between three or so and eight miles over smooth, scenic routes and in great
weather. Teammates travel together in two vans during the relay and, in
general, it's just a fun way to get to know new folks and learn more about
some of the people you think you know, already. Check out
www.hoodtocoast.com
We are looking for two men and two women to fill a team that will probably
average nine-minute pace per mile. We have 10+ minute runners on the team
and we have sub-six minute runners on the team. We have first-timers and we
have three who have done the race before (Tom Sawyer and myself have both
done it twice and one of our Oregon teammates has done it several times).
Our team will arrive in Portland on Wednesday, Aug. 25 or Thursday, Aug 26
and we'll be staying on 23rd/Vaughn, in the Northwest/Nob Hill section,
which is the only place to hang your hat on these trips. It's right down the
street from McMenamins, and we'll start the relay at 9.45a.m. on Friday,
Aug. 27. We'll finish sometime on Saturday and head back to Portland
immediately, thereby avoiding the sacrilege that they call a post-race party
(pay-for light beers when handcrafted varieties abound in their state).
It will be fun and hopefully we can get more folks from Louisiana out
there. There have been a number of teams that have gone since we took our
first team in 2001. If you are interested in making this trip, don't let
fitness or "being out of shape" or "not being fast enough" be an excuse. You
are cheating yourself out of a great opportunity to run in excellent weather
on perfect (for the most part) roads.
