"Sentiment is the poetry of the imagination." Alphonse de Lamartine
With all the rain, I stumbled across a new multisport dimension: kayak from
your house to wherever. With all the water, paddling is more manageable than
ever apparently. There was a 20-something-year-old dude in the Baton Rouge
area living near the LSU campus who started paddling in a ditch (maybe Bayou
Fountain?) in the capital city who paddled all the way to
Mittendorf's Restaurant on Lake Maurepas. It took him two days to get there.
Speaking of water, check out the attachments taken in northwest Louisiana.
You might want to think twice before doing any open water training in the
Shreveport area any time soon.
Sam Houston Jones of Lake Charles says he thinks the nice little triathlon
series he helped coordinate is no longer a local secret. The Calcasieu
Parish T-Gator Series Tri #3 has sold out with more than three weeks in
advance after Tri #2 sold out five days in advance.

Is everyone set to do the Caney Lake Triathlon in Minden? I think it's one of the best summer triathlons in the state.
Call 800/2MINDEN for information. It's in two weeks I think. I hear that the Cajunman Triathlon in Lafayette has now officially sold out and is jammed full. But the calendar is still full of lots of triathlons here, there, and everywhere.
How were all the holiday running events? I got a report that the Baton Rouge-based Club South Runners Freedom Mile was good, but thin on participants. The week-day summer running series held at areas across the state continue to be well attended, according to various emails I get. Lots more high school cross country coaches are using these week-day running races as a clinic to get their squads ready for fall cross country racing.
The MS Rides set for the fall are beginning to stir a bit of attention, too. Anyone have a web site on the MS Ride that usually takes place in the Hammond area?
Suzie Erlicher said her cycling husband Dick's prostate cancer surgery went
well recently and the biopsy on the lymph nodes was negative for any further
spread of the cancer. Our long-time cycling buddy from Baton Rouge has been
ahead of the pack in recovery goals and was sent home from the hospital
within two days after his surgery.
I'm loving the early days of the Tour de France and it's made even more fun
knowing lots of folks over in Europe watching the tour. For my household,
watching the tour is truly a family affair. Kudos for Outdoor Life Network
for doing a good job so far in broadcasting the tour and for groups like
American-based VeloNews for providing great internet coverage for those of
us who just can't wait 'til evening to watch the rerun of the stage for the
day.
For the first time, I've picked my own fantasy team via geocities.com for
the 2004 Tour de France. Here's Team Dunaway (with notes) for the 2004 TDF:
Rider 1: #8 , Roberto Heras , LIB , 18 ,
He's the man who made Lance's 2003 TDF
Rider 2, #82, Axel Merckx, LOT, 8,
His dad is the famous Belgian cyclist who has won the TDF in previous years.
Rider 3: #5 , Tyler Hamilton , PHO , 20 ,
There has to be something good out of New England USA besides the guy
running for U.S. president.
Rider 4: #18 , Stuart O'Grady , COF , 14 , SPRINTER
Let's hear it for the old guys (even Australians) who've been in and out
of TDF for years.
Rider 5: #122, Santiago Perez, PHO
I like the name; it reminds me of Plaquemines Parish power.
Rider 6: #44, Didier Rous, BLB, 10
I've heard his name 'round lots and my first boss' name was Didier, who
himself was a good man.
Rider 7: #31 , Bobby Julich , CSC , 12 ,
An enduring American rider on the scene as a real "player" before Lance
made his mark.
Rider 8: #137 , Laurent Lefèvre , BLB , 4 ,
I love these names that I see around Avoyelles Parish all the time. I'm
into the language, so there.
Rider 9: #140 , Sébastien Hinault , CA , 4 ,
Hinault sounds like a rider I should know, and besides he's from
California (CA, right?) and I threw him in memory of my daughters.
Here are some TDF internet sites I found of interest:

Louisiana-Mississippi Cycling District Team Time Trial Set Aug. 8
From Shane Hernandez
To remember the late Baton Rouge cyclists Tim Cappo and Steve Seiden, this year's championship cycling team time trial is being named in their honor and proceeds will go to their families. It's a 32-mile, 4-person team trial much like what is going on today as a matter of fact at theTour de France.

Since we don't have mountains here, organizers decided to set the date for one of the hottest times of the year to add our own natural challenge to the course. It will be staged on the River Road just south of the LSU campus on a Sunday morning, Aug. 8, 2004
Participants can register from 8 a.m. 'til 9 a.m. and teams will start being released at
9:30 a.m. The cost is $60 per team and prizes include medals for top three teams in all categories.

The course will be the "loop" which is ordinarily used on week-day rides with cyclists going clock-wise. It is a 10.66-mile
loop that will be done three times. We will start in the very bottom of the
"V" at what is called the "split" and you will take two right hand turns, one at the intersection of River
Road and the other at the bottom of the "V" to begin the "loop" again.

The course is flat, smooth and shaded in about a third of the course and very
fast. This is your best chance for having a team time trial that is what might be called pleasurable. If
you have any questions please email shanehernandez@... .

Crash at Velodrome Races Over Weekend; More Races Set July 10-11
From Josie Babin
Saturday evening, July 3, at the velodrome district championship during their matched sprint, Jerry Simon and Caroline Owen, both of Baton Rouge, went down in spectacular fashion.
As Simon went down, Owen had no choice but to swerve infield and took the hole shot made by the judge’s stand, a tent pole and a picnic bench. In an impressive display of handling skills, she tucked in and held the straight line while spectators scrambled aside. Unfortunately, the picnic bench took a bite as she cruised by at high speed.
She underwent surgery this to repair a severed muscle in her shin (she will be able to tell you which). There was also a major cut in her ankle that narrowly missed a couple tendons. Her Tibia is not broken, so thankfully it’s '‘just'’ a soft tissue wound. Josh Rosby reported on Tuesday that she seems to be recovering as well as possible. The doctor assures us that she will fully recover in time, albeit with a nice scar.
Simon, after his slide down the home stretch, managed to shred his nice new uniform and get a healthy dose of track rash. He was released from the hospital the evening he was admitted, looking pretty chipper for the circumstance.
Here are the results from the track events held Saturday night, July 3:
