Louisiana Multisport Report

June 21, 2004

"When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign,
that the dunces are all in confederacy against him."
  Jonathan Swift

It's the first day of summer.

I forgot to mention in last weeks enewsletter that the Tarver family of
Sulphur have long been deeply involved in launching youth triathlons. How
could I forget Diane and Mark Tarver's contribution to triathlon in general
in Louisiana, much less youth triathlons? Forgive my oversight.
Congratulations to the many Louisiana triathletes who raced the Buffalo Springs Half Ironman in Texas last weekend and the Coeur d'Alene Ironman in Idaho. Sue Boudreaux of Mandeville, a masters racer, qualified for a spot in the Hawaiian Ironman in Kona in October. She was one of many from Louisiana who raced the event very competitively. Check out the results at www.buffalospringslaketriathlon.com and www.ironmancda.com

The Tuesday evening New Orleans area races are set for June 22, July 13,
Aug. 3, and Aug. 24. All the events are begin at 6.45p.m. Get more details
at
http://members.cox.net/catch22trackclub/tuesdaytwos2004.pdf. Club South Runners based in Baton Rouge is hosting its second race in its Wednesday evening summer two-mile series. Get the details via lawired.com by clicking on the CSR icon. These mid-week running events are good workouts or time-trial opportunities to run fast in
the shade on a well-marked course.

Randy Legeai, Robin Robert, Keith Duet, and the great New Orleans Bike Club crew once again did a terrific job on the Tour de Louisiane in the Florida Parishes. After a two-year bike racing break, I came out Saturday mainly to do the road race (my excuse for a weak time trial) and remembered why I so love bike racing. Racing a strong category four race was really lots of fun and I was so impressed with this new Tiger Cycling Foundation group I am riding with this season. They were almost scientific about their approach to the race. But there was not enough science to really totally prepare for the 1 p.m. start of a 72-mile road course on a blistering hot day. Check out the details via the New Orleans Bike Club's web site.
Last weekend's stage race should provide a pretty good launching pad for the state cycling road race championship in Hodges Gardens near Many, LA. Stay tuned.

How was the T-Gator Triathlon in Calcasieu Parish last weekend? Isn't there a Sunrise Triathlon in northwest Louisiana this weekend? Check out sportspectrumusa.com. For T-Gator information call 337/478-5355.

July 18 Spillway Classic Trail Run Set for New Course from Same Start Line
A new course has been announced for the July 18th Great Spillway Classic
Trail Run, the second largest "trail run" in the USA.

Start at same location as previous years in front of the boat launch
pavilion, proceed to the top of levee and continue for about 1/4 mile where
the course turns down the levee through a clear cut and then turns right onto
the mountain bike trail.  Continue north on the mountain bike trail that
runs parallel to the levee for about 1.5 miles to a specific turn-around
point, where the course will cross through the woods and return on the mountain
bike trail that runs parallel to the canal. The finish is just past the
trailhead and in a similar location as previous years.

According to race director Chuck George, "This new route places more of the
course inside the woods and off of the top of the levee, thus providing a
more challenging and scenic route. The true 'trail' integrity is further
enhanced with this route, I look forward to the feedback from the
participants, I believe that they will be as excited and pleased with this
route as I am."

Members of the race committee that walked the new course to review it
"enthusiastically" endorsed the change, said George.  Thanks to the New
Orleans Metro Area Mountain Bike Organization (
www.Nomambo.org) for
suggesting consideration of this route. For more information regarding the
Great Spillway Classic Trail Run, visit the NOTC website at
