It was great seeng Minnesota resident Jon Anderson on the Tuesday River Road Ride in Baton Rouge Tuesday. He was kind of quiet, but he looked very fit. The cold winter up in his new home must be serving his fitness level well.

Any left-brained-analytical types out there? Any accountant-types out there
in the Louisiana's multisport world? I need some help this year organizing
and presenting the Louisiana multisport rankings. My long-time partner Chuck
Owen of Bossier City cannot help me this year and I need help. Now is the
time to start working on a program to get the rankings underway for
Louisiana multisporters, racing in Louisiana events, only involving Louisiana
residents who happen to be multisporters. Call me at 225/296-7490 or email
kdunaway@.... There are already lots of results posted and the
sooner I can start sifting out Louisiana multisporters from non-Louisiana
multisporters for the statewide rankings, the better.

Kristi George, director of Baton Rouge's Mid City Historical Cemeteries
Coalition, is planning an October running race, but can't get any help in
setting a date or details in the Baton Rouge area. Those interested in
helping should call her at 225/346-1000 ext. 103.

Northshore Week-day Riding Underway
From Bob Hodges,
bobh79@...
Recently, the Tuesday and Thursday night Northshore group rides from St.
Benedict's Church on Smith Road have begun. This group ride is traditionally
"fast" with average speeds for the 29-mile distance consistently over 20
mph. The ride is different in personality from the Southshore Giro and
lakefront rides because you have some decent rolling hills and at times more
automobile traffic. The southshore rides are also more like training races
because most of the riders are road racers and there is very light traffic.
The northshore ride has a more diverse mix of riders (primarily road and
multisport) so it is more like a fast team time trial (we also have more
traffic to contend with).

I'm not riding as much as I'd like to these days due to work and home chore
commitments so I come to these rides wondering if this will be the night I
get dropped from the group. A few weeks ago I did a Tuesday ride with about
10 riders. In terms of relative fitness, I was at the lower end of the "food
chain" so my plan was to try to stay in the paceline rotation but not do any
long pulls at the front. One of the riders looked very fit (at least 20
years younger than me!), I'll call him Joe Speed. We started out on Stafford
Road at a 19-20 mph pace that was pretty constant until we reached Barker's
Corner. After that, the speed consistently stayed in the 23-25 mph range
with Joe Speed doing some pulls up to 26-28 mph. The thing I noticed the
most about Joe was when he came to the front, he waited until the rider
doing the previous pull was back on at the rear and then he smoothly ramped
up the speed while the rest of us held on (but no one ever got dropped).
This behavior seemed to set a pattern for each pull in the entire group and
it seemed there was a real effort to keep the accelerations as smooth as
possible. Not only did it feel fast, but it felt safe and very fun. Also,
because the group was riding so smoothly, it was easy for everyone to stay
in a single file paceline. I was even able to do several short pulls at
23-25 mph. As we turned off of LA 21 onto Old Military Road for the last
mile to the end of the ride, I checked our average speed for the distance
and it was right at 23 mph. I was tired but I did not feel "trashed".

About a week later, I came out for another Tuesday ride. This time we had
about 8 riders. Joe Speed wasn't there but there was another strong rider I'll call Alpha Al who I was sure would be doing the strongest and fastest pulls. The ride started out much like the previous ride with a moderate
warmup at 19-21 mph. When we got to the Section/Fairhaven part of the ride,
Alpha Al (who was just behind me in the rotation) started asserting his
fitness. The problem for me was as I finished my pull and came off the
front, Al would quickly accelerate to a much faster speed that was not only
a challenge for the group but a real bitch for me to get back on at the rear
end. This pretty much was the case for the rest of the ride. The surge at
the front tended to spread the group so there would often be a bridging
effort to get it back together. This made the ride personality feel "jumpy"
and "nervous" and at times overlapped riders around each other. No one got
dropped until the last 2 miles on LA 21 when Al took it up to 30 mph but at
least that section is relatively flat so most of us were able to hang on to
that final acceleration. It wasn't much fun for me as it seemed like I was
always trying to get back on or close a gap created by another surge. But
what I found most interesting was when we turned on to Old Military and I
checked my computer, our average speed for the ride was only 21.5 mph!  It
seems the group spent more time trying to re-group after many of Al's surges
that the overall speed of the ride actually dropped.

My point in contrasting the two rides is to point out that the strong
rider(s) can really control the personality of a group ride for better or
worse. They also (whether they know it or not) set the example for the less
experienced riders who want to be like them. On the northshore, because we
are so much more exposed to traffic, it is probably better for the stronger
riders to be more like Joe Speed. Joe rides fast and strong on both flat
sections and hills but he does it without excessive surging and is
considerate of others as he tries to make sure everyone is ready when he
picks up the pace. This creates a paceline that is tighter and "skinnier"
(usually single file) making it more compatible with the cars and trucks we
share the road with. It also seems to set a precedent in the group behavior
that can make the ride faster, more fun for everyone, and has the bonus of
being inherently safer.

I'm sure we've all had an experience riding with a Joe Speed or Alpha Al. I
think everyone will agree that it's better that we have more Joe Speeds if
we want to have those fast but safe group rides on the northshore. Something
to think about.

Tour de Brandon Bike Race Notes
From Eddie Corcoran
My wife and I drove three hours from New Orleans in a driving rainstorm
Saturday morning to compete in a weekend of bike racing in Brandon only to
arrive and find out that the masters crit was cancelled due to a lack of
sponsors. I was informed that the masters who were racing 1/2/3 would not be
scored for LAMBRA points. I can only speak for myself but I am personally
chasing points and do not care about the money and couldn't understand, why!
I was then told that Sunday's masters race was not definite, that it would
depend on how many sign up the morning of the race. I don't mean to bitch
but I kindly ask that in the future, please give us a heads up if you lose a
sponsor and decide to cancel a race. Congratulations to all that raced.

From Bill Tramel
I’ve received a number of emails regarding the results of the Giro de Brandon cat 4 road race.First, every e-mail was very cordial; I thank-you for that!! As a result of the e-mails, the tape of the finish of the road race was officially reviewed. And what do you know? You were right! There were some people missed that came in near the back of the main group; only places from 16 and above were impacted. As a result I have updated the official results of the cat 4 race which I have also included at the end of this e-mail. Please note that neither LAMBRA points nor money finishers were impacted. For all of you impacted by the updated results (positively and negatively) I apologize for the mess-up.

A few of you also asked about the times of the various races.Unfortunately, the race times were not taken.

It was also noted in some e-mails that the Cat 5 road race had 41 starters, but only 14 were listed in the results. The reason is that the camera malfunctioned for the Cat 5 finish, and it was not noticed until the officials went to review the tape. Since we had depended on the camera and did not have people simultaneously attempting to visually record the finish, the only way to resolve the finish was to have a pow-wow with the lead finishers, where we arrived at a (hopefully) mutually agreeable finish order. The downside is that we were not able to go as deep as we would have liked for the finish order. The lesson learned: always have a backup.

Gary has processed everything and those of you that finished “in the money” should be getting your checks late this week. I thank all of you for your e-mails and comments, and hope to see you at the races next year.

For Sale
From Susan McManus
2002 Bianchi Eros Donna, 46 cm, 700 wheels

In excellent condition - one or two small scratches on paint - not noticable.  Bought new in January 2003.  Less than 700 miles on it. Aerobars added and included.  Owner's manual included. Pedals not included.  I have temporary pedals on the bike right now so it can be test ridden in tennis shoes if you want. I love this bike, but decided to get a tri-specific bike (blame it on my love of gadgetry). Retail was $1,100; paid $1,000; asking $775.

I live in Covington, but would be willing to meet. Email me if you're interested or call me 504/491-6107.  The bike will be on display at the Abitaman Triathlon this weekend in Mandeville.

gulf coast triathlon

Dear Kenny,
A quick word on the GCT  1/2 Ironman Tri. As usual, if you have not done a tri with nearly 2000 entrants, this is an experience. The GCT staff has this race down to a science. FRom check in to finish area, this is a first rate operation. You must adjust to the fact that you will be leaving your bike somewhere overnight and that you cannot warm up on the bike before the race. It is actually nice not fooling with your machine on race morning.
Race morning in Panama City was great. There was a dry NW breeze at 5 -10 mph. This gave the Gulf swim a mild west -east chop. The temperature at 6:15 was mid 70's. The water was 73 so we used wetsuits. That salty Gulf swim never tastes good but the water exit is refreshing. The bike course is basically an out and back ride. There was a moderate head wind outbound but it was a much easier ride back. There was not much humidity and so the bike ride was relatively refreshing. There were bottle exchanges every 10 miles which really helps with hydration.
Like  most half IM's, your race really depends on your run. If you went too hard on the bike, the run will seem like 26.2 , not 13.1. Proper hydration and fueling are essential to a good run. I have found that eating pretzels, supplied at the water stations, replenish the salt lost during the earlier stages of the race. This years run was hot but not nearly as bad as in the past. Of course us old guys started in the 14th wave, one hour ten minutes after the pros started. It was much hotter at 10:30 than at 9:15 am when the pros started their run. The penalty for growing old.
There were several notable Louisiana finishers. On the podium were John Thompson, 2nd in the 25-29m, Sue Boudreaux 3rd in the 45 -49 F, Mark Johnston 3rd in the 55-59M, John Alchin 1rst and Art Delaup 3rd in the 65-69M, your's truly finished 2nd in the 45-49 M. Other notable finishers were Morgan Nalty and John Beaulieu in the clydesdales, Andrew Kenworthy 5th in 35-39, Shannon Depp 7th in the 25-29F and the lovely Maria Martinez was 6th in the 35-39.
The best Louisiana finisher was Brett Reagan, who finished 2nd in the 30-34M and 7th OVERALL out of 1400 finishers. His bike was 25.1mph over 56miles on a windy course. Truly a great effort. There were nearly 200 Louisiana participants, the bulk of which toughed it out and finished  well. It is a great event and one to place on the calendar every 2-3 years. Thanks for the vine.
