"Let's feel the magic of those two little words, "thank you." Ardath Rodale
Is this the week for the Sunrise Triathlon #2 in Shreveport? Call 318/798-1241 or go to sportspectrumusa.com for details. There is lots of multisporting going on in the Ruston area at the Xterra and road triathlon in Lincoln Parish this weekend. Sure wish someone involved in that event would keep us updated in South Louisiana.
Despite rain everywhere across the Bayou State last weekend, a good time was
had by all at the Crawfishman Duathlon in Mandeville, the Miles for Smiles
bike tour in the Felicianas, and at the Twin Cities bike race in the Monroe
area. Now, the big chat is the Gulf Coast Triathlon going on coming up in
north Florida. Stay tuned for details.
Results of the Twin Cities Cyclists' Twin Cities Challenge is
now on the NOBC website at: http://www.gnofn.org/~nobc//2004/tcc_res.htm
Crawfishman Duathlon results are up at www.crawfishman.net
I loved doing the Crawfishman event without a swim. Reports were that the
fecal content of the lake was too unsafe for swimming. Yes, it was a great
day to run! Race directors Mark Salvetti and Steve Sperrier and crew did
their usual great job on the event. It was great seeing lots of folks I've
not seen in a long time, including my favorite race announcer Charlie
Houlihan. He sets the standard for multisport race announcing.
Congrats to Chuck Farrell of Lacombe who qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman
Triathlon in Kona who placed third in his age group at St. Croix Triathon.
Peter "Moose" O'Krepki of the Northshore is also going to the event; he got in via
the Ironman lottery.
Ian's Tri Adds New Race Category for Lake Charles Area Event on May 16
From Sam Houston Jones II" houston.jones@...
In our ongoing effort to make things fun and interesting... I wanted to let
you know about a special fundraiser that we are doing here in Lake Charles
for the benefit of state champion Neil Rowland's son Ian who has special
needs. The event, the LCT Handicap practice triathlon (aka Ian's Tri) is
going to be a handicapped race based upon performances in last year's
Gatorman or equivalent race. The maximum handicap will be 20 minutes so
those who finished 20 minutes or more behind Neil will start first. Then
every minute new people will start until Neil starts exactly 20 minutes
behind the first group. The theory is that we should have a bunch of
people arriving at the finish line at the same time.
If anyone is interested in participating please let me know and I'll try to pair
him/her with a member who doesn't have a guest and we'll figure out what
his/her handicap should be. The cost is $30 for non-members and $20 for
members. The distances are approximate: half-mile swim, 20-mile bike,
3-mile run. This event will NOT be USAT sanctioned and there will not be
any traffic control or officials. It will actually be draft-legal! It is a
participate-at-your-own risk type of event. It's set for Sunday, May 16th at
the Prien Lake I-210 Beach in Lake Charles at 7 a.m. sharp!
Baton Rouge Sets May as Bike Month
From Gilles Morin
May is Bike Month in Baton Rouge and Mayor-President Bobby Simpson
encourages everyone to celebrate by joining him for Bike Baton Rouge. This
event will take place Saturday, May 22, 2004 from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
at 5th Street and Main, in the St. Joseph's Cathedral surface parking lot.
Free parking will be available in the Galvez Garage also located at 5th
street and Main.
Guided bike tours of downtown Baton Rouge will be led by Baton Rouge Bike
Club members, for all those who are interested. It is encouraged that
cyclist wear their helmets. In addition to the free maps, there will be
refreshments and goody bags for those who participate in the guided rides of
downtown. Several of Baton Rouge's bike shops and bike clubs will be on hand
for demonstrations on bicycle safety and the newest products available.
Please come out to join the Mayor for this exciting community event. The
Mayor encourages the citizens of East Baton Rouge to begin riding their
bikes to work, to visit friends, run errands or simply to have fun.
For more information, call 225/389-3144.
More Beginner Tri Events Wanted
From Sam Houston Jones II
On another innovative note, I think you may have heard that the inaugural
Governor's Triathlon (for Beginners Only) was a success with 97
entries on March 27th. If anyone around the state is interested in hosting
an event like this then I'm sure that Rudy Macklin from the Governor's
Council on Physical Fitness & Sports will step up once again as a lead
sponsor and provide t-shirts and medals. My hope is that this would become
a statewide beginners-only series. I'll be happy to advise any interested
parties.
T Gator Series Coming June 20, July 18
From Sam Houston Jones II
Please note the last two races of the 2004 T-Gator Series in Lake Charles
are set on June 20th and July 18th; and Gatorman on Oct. 3rd. I will remind
you when the dates get closer. Email shjones62@... or check out

Indian Creek Triathlon Notes Offered for Rapides Parish Event
From Brad Colwell, race director
Just to let you know, we got the web site up and running..finally. Mega
thanks to Spencer Martin for grabbing the reigns and putting it together.
Look for course maps to be posted next week.
I gotta tell ya, I was born in Alexandria, grew up in Bossier, went to high
school in Ruston and lived in Baton Rouge for six years before coming back
to Alexandria 16 years ago, but Rapides Parish ain't a bad place to be much
less race. I know people in other parts of the state don't even know we exist, but I can't
believe how blessed we are to have both the Kincaid Lake
and Indian Creek Recreation areas in our backyard.. These are absolutely
incredibly lakes and training grounds for multisporters, cyclist, and
runners.
I can speak for myself, our race committee, and members of the Red River
Tri Club when I say, we can't wait for race day on June 13!
Regarding the campground, all participants interested in camping out be
aware that the campsites at Indian Creek cannot be reserved. Sites are
offered on a first-come, first-serve basis. My only suggestion would be to try to get
someone to run up mid-week and put a tent, car, camper, etc. down on an open
campsite and start renting it out. The ranger station phone is 318/487-5058.
Camp site fees for triathletes are paid, otherwise they are:
Day Use -$3 (remember your day-use for June 13 is paid by the triathlon..)
Pull-Thru Site (single)-- $14 per day
Pull-Thru Site (Two Camper units) - $18 (for single) $28 (for double)
Check details as out for the ever-changing event at

June 27th Starts Grand Excursion Ride Along the Miss. River
From Pat Nunally
The Grand Excursion Bike Ride departs Rock Island, Illinois, on June
27th, 2004, following the Grand Flotilla of steamboats and arriving in
the Twin Cities for the July 4th weekend. A bus will return cyclists
to the Quad Cities on July 5th.
Cyclists for this 400-mile trip will have excellent views of the
steamboats while riding alongside the beautiful vistas of the bluffs
of the upper Mississippi River. The ride will cover approximately 35 to
70 miles each day over somewhat hilly terrain. Overnight stops will
coincide with the excursion boats' docking schedules to allow
cyclists to enjoy the entertainment and events that will be staged at each
port of call -- music festivals, reenactment programs, fireworks displays,
hot air balloons and much more.
The $225 registration fee includes a tee-shirt, breakfast in La
Crosse, overnight camp sites and transportation of riders' luggage and tents
from each campsite to Saint Paul, MN. (Additional fees will be
charged for return motor coach transportation to Rock Island, jerseys
and dorm rooms in La Crosse.)

For more detailed information, and to register, go to
www.grandexcursion.com. Click on "Register for the Bike Ride" link
or scroll down to "3 Ways to Join in the Journey" and click on "Bike

Excursion," a region-wide community festival celebrating the Upper
Mississippi River. A schedule of regional and local events, ticket
information, and a list of participating communities and
organizations can be found at www.grandexcursion.com.
In addition to experiencing the Grand Excursion, bicyclists can
savor being part of the first organized "excursion" on the northern
section of the Mississippi River Trail (www.mississippirivertrail.org).
This proposed bicycle route will eventually stretch from the Mississippi
River headwaters in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. The southern
half, from St. Louis to New Orleans, is already mapped, marked and in use.
The northern half, which includes much of the GE route, is being mapped
and signed now, so GE cyclists will be among its first users.
"Perhaps in another 150 years, when the MRT is a long-standing,
world-class destination, a new generation of cyclists will bike along
this same route to commemorate THIS ride as we're commemorating
Millard Fillmore's excursion now," said Pat Nunnally, Executive Director of

Team LaS'port Web Site Revised
From Alan Moore
Yes sir, it's true. After four months offline and almost of year of
inactivity, the new Team LaS'port website is up and running! Check it
out when you have time. It's a work in progress and there's still things
to be added and corrected but there's enough up to make it viewable to
all. Micaela Crooks is pretty much responsible for putting
it all together (I did the headline banner!).
Go to: www.teamlasport.org
If that doesn't work: http://lasport.pixelfusiononline.com/
If you have any problems with the site, email Micaela at
crookstm@... and we'll get it fixed. Of course, feel free to
shower her with praise, too! She doesn't make a living at building
websites and we appreciate her efforts. We'll be adding pics to the
photo gallery soon along with a photo tribute to Mike Simpson who passed
away today in a car accident. Helpful critiques are welcome as well as
submissions of photos and stories.
We'll be updating every week, so check back to see what's new! Hope you
like it.
